We’ve a number of things in development right now, including the new event maps to be added to the members area, a new version of the season ticker which will get the tool back in the sidebar on every page of the site and the members’ pre-season player projections.

I’m directly involved in the latter, working with Fantasy Football statistician Chris Atkinson, the creator of the statistical model that powered his “Rate My Team” website over the past two seasons. Last year the stats brains amongst the Scout Team, namely Pure Olivia and Superior Being, spent a lot of time looking at Chris’ model and came to the conclusion that he had created something really rather special.

The model is built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has a attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence or factored in.

When it came to improving our projections for the coming season, it was a no-brainer for us. We approached Chris to be involved and we’re delighted to say he joined the Scout team ranks earlier this year. We’ve been spending several weeks working with the existing model and hatching plans for improvements. However, the pre-season projections have been the priority and they are now close to their first release.

Right now we’re factoring in the effect of the African Cup of Nations on those likely to participate but, once that is added to the model, we’ll be very close to a first set of numbers.

We’re looking to publish full projections for every player, plotting their total points, goals, assists etc for the entire season. We’re also looking to deliver short-term projections offering a view of the opening six Gameweeks.

The projection tables will be fully sortable and you can assess FPL points per million value to help you run the rule of those crucial budget purchases.

I’m certainly encouraged by the numbers being produced at the moment and have no doubt that, by bringing in Chris’ model, we’ve taken a big step to delivering our the best set of pre-season projections yet. I’ll hopefully bring you more on this in the next few days…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Man U keeper, Chelsea and Man C defenders plus rotating cheapies.

Not settled on all mids yet but probably Hazard Pienaar Noble and Maloney with possibly Frei as the last cheapie. That's reasonable in my book though admittedly generic.

Cisse > Adebayor is obv. Spurs coverage (if it happens)

Seeing as you have Ben Arfa already.

Personally I'd rather Arsenal cover than Spurs cover - if we're talking season long rather than 1st few weeks. Too soon to say which players though.

You run a blog I don't. You win. It wasn't the system it was the team he fried to do it with. Look at Porto, Spurs are made for him.

                It's all about opinions.

AVB tried to play a system at Chelsea that didn't fit the players he had at his disposal. The Spurs squad may be better equipped to play his tactics, but he didn't appear to realise it wasn't working at the Bridge. I find it difficult to compare Porto and a top team in the Premier League.

I'll take a wait-and-see approach with the Spurs defence this season anyway...

It's part of a game I did last season with some people. Rather than everyone having the no brainers like the van Persies and Silvas of the game you had to go for differentials of under 5%.
If you fielded a player whose rose to over 5% ownership you had to take a penalty of whatever the player scored plus 8 points.

Of course, we had to do a draft to avoid all having the same squads which complicated it a little bit, but it was still a decent game.

the 2x2 rotation would free up more cash, but it's chosing who to rotate. Maybe SUN/NEW AND QPR and someone, but which big hitter? I can't shake the feeling that you;d want both City and United defence. (Though maybe going 2x2 allows for DDG and fed/jask)

Love how the top scoring player by a mile is in no RMT's so far and he is a clear £1mill more than the next player so would need a bit of tinkering to get him in.

The big 3 up front isn't Aguero, Rooney, Torres - its Aguero, Rooney, RVP which is £3 mill more expensive..

So with Tim Cahill seemingly out of town, Fellaini behind Jelly, eh? Hopefully this also frees up cash for Pienaar to join the fold (again)...

I don't know how it changes much. I don't think Fellaini was always playing behind Jelavic when Tim Cahill wasn't. Cahill was never going to be a regular starter this season either, he was pretty much past it last season. Correct me if i'm wrong, but could Naismith also play there?

Yeah Naismith looks likely. Lined up behind Jelavic at Rangers and was more effective than him - certainly diminishes Jelavic's appeal and heightens Pienaar's if he moves.

Anyone want to comment on how amazing this team looks, tried to steer away from the generic looking teams 😉

    Begs
    Ivanovic (c) Lescott Hangeland
    Hazard Kagawa Pienaar Noble
    Graham Torres Aguero

    Subs:
    Juicy Wilson Baloney Cuellar

One question though. If Michu comes out at a 6.0 i'm thinking of getting him for Pienaar and getting a double Chelsea defence with Bale in for HAzard , but i would then have to think about changing Graham, any suggestions on replacements for Graham?

depends on how much you want to spend

The best keeper rotation would be De Gea/Hart but no ones gonna go for that

      Mignolet and Krul/Foster is good

      Friedel/Federici is good

      Begovic, Jask is good

My mantra that I came up with whilst day dreaming at my office desk was:

"better to spend too little on playing goalkeepers, than to spend too much".

Some may disagree, but even Hennessey was decent last season.

Despite the flak he got, Xabi (above) has a good point and one that I certainly feel is pertinent. All this tinkering and endless RMTs count for nothing as so many things will change before the season starts. We all know our current teams are next to useless come the 18th, so why do we do this endless planning when there will certainly be a few spanners in the works before the season kick off?

I reckon we're all a bit pathetic and really should get out more! 🙂

Although I largely agree ... you and Xabi are overlooking the importance of the tinkering re: spending models and knowledge of players at each price-point.

As one tinkers, they play around with the cheap/expensive defense, the rotate/no rotation GKs, the 1/2/3 big strikers up top, etc. models. In order to do so, they more intimately learn the best players/fixtures at each price point at each position.

This all means that when The Show gets ready to start, people can more fluidly adapt to events.

That doesn't mean it's not pathetic, though.

I agree KE, but I feel we do take it to the extremes here (and why not, being an fpl site?)

I dunno, "Dyer or Maloney to spend 0.5 to upgrade some useless defender?" type stuff... and we all know everything's going to change in the next 3 weeks anyway.

I must be in gumpy old man mode tonight.... watch out! 😉
