Our series of articles analysing the chief protagonists from the three promoted clubs has already brought Rickie Lambert and Jobi McAnuff under the spotlight earlier this week. Today, it’s the turn of Southampton’s wing wizard Adam Lallana who, alongside Lambert, was one of only two Saints players to feature in the npower Championship Team of the Season for 2011/12:

The Statistics

As a youngster, Lallana was a member of the Bournemouth Centre of Excellence, where his talents were spotted by a member of the Southampton Academy and, as a result, he joined the club as a 12-year-old. The midfielder was a key component of the Saints’ FA Youth Cup squads that reached the final and semi-final respectively before he stepped up to the first-team in 2006.

The first couple of seasons were a struggle for Lallana; managing just six league appearances and a single goal, he was farmed out to Bournemouth on loan for a month, where he featured three times before returning to St Mary’s. In 2008-09, however, he finally nailed down a regular role, scoring once and providing five assist in 40 appearances. The following season, however, Lallana’s attacking talents really came to the fore – 15 goals and three assists in 44 league games were indicative of his threat, while eight goals and 11 assists in 2010/11 helped the Saints win promotion from League One. Last term saw Lallana produce double figures for both goals and assists for the first time in his burgeoning career (10 and 11 respectively) as Nigel Adkins’ side sealed their return to the top-flight by finishing a point behind Reading in second place.

The Prospects

Adkins’ attack-minded 4-4-2 helped Southampton rack up 85 goals last term – the most of the three promoted clubs – and Lallana’s marauding left flank raids are bound to catch the attention of many a Fantasy manager, bearing in mind he played a part in 24% of his side’s goals in 2011/12, second only to Rickie Lambert.

Priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and a mere 4.9 in the Sky Sports game and with a fair share of both corners and free-kicks, the 24-year-old looks an enticing proposition, though the side’s recent formations in the pre-season friendlies may give us some cause for consternation. Adkins has trialled 4-3-2-1 and 4-3-3 systems over the Saints’ three full matches thus far and shifted Lallana into a deeper central role in the midfield three. After yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Ajax, Adkins admitted his side are likely to change tactics over the course of next season and will be less “gung-ho” in their approach in the Premier League – an indication, perhaps, that the 4-4-2 will be rolled out mainly at St Mary’s as the promoted club look to tighten up at the back on their travels.

Certainly, the Saints’ horrendous opening schedule is likely enough to deter us from initially investing in their attacking assets – with showdowns against City, United and Arsenal in the first four Gameweeks, they could barely ask for a more difficult start to their season. After that, though, the fixture list is a little kinder and could sway plenty to take a punt – home clashes against Villa and Fulham and a trip to West Ham are the type of matches their attacking approach should prosper in and if Adkins’ men are follow in the footsteps of last year’s promoted clubs and stay afloat, Lallana will surely be crucial to their cause.

Walcott looked dangerous in the friendly vs City the other day. Arsenal have poor fixtures and with all the new signings and RVP probably leaving, just waiting a while to see how Arsenal get on.

Demps all day for me, guaranteed to play and literally plays as a striker.

Walcott will struggle for game time and is too hit and miss

Bale, I have as well as Demps but only fear with him is with Siggy and VDV he may not get as many points

Anyone else thinking about not getting Chelsea attacking coverage for the start of the season. The more I think about it the more against it I am. Was thinking of getting 2 from Hazard, Ramires & Torres but not sure its worth it just for the DGW, that blank GW 3 fixture puts a huge spanner in the works for me.

By Jove, after much tinkering, I think I have got it - a team that I am happy with!

    Mignolet - Jaaskilinen
    Lescott - Cole - Boyce - Hangeland - Fonte
    Hazard - Kagawa - Pienaar - Maloney - Guthrie
    Aguero - Torres - Petric

    £2.0 bank

Hazard and Torres probably fairly short term before they become VDV/Bale and Rooney respectively.

    Nice?

Seems most people going with Rooney/Aguero/Cheapie...

I'm toying with a big front 3 as alot of value around the 6-6.5 mark in midfield this year.

2 strong defenders flanked by 3 cheapies and DDG/cheapie in goal.

    Anyone else thinking of this?

Depends whether MON sees OShea as a CB this season.

      Bardsley---Brown---Cuellar---OShea

would be my preferred formation. With Turner gone and Brown injured then I'm thinking he is nailed on. Think Sunderland will sign a new CB and a LB before the transfer window closes.

MF very light and a notable absence of any attacking players in there. Big fan of Yaya though. Not sure about Harte, there are better 4.5s and 11m on keepers is too much. Don't need Vorm when you already have Swansea defensive coverage.

Vorm > 4.5 keeper, You will play De Gea most weeks so you only need to cover for when Fergie rotates.
Torres > Bent maybe? Frees up some funds to upgrade midfield. Could always do the Torres > Rooney switch later.

i think raul meireles from chelsea also have the same price tag. and since chelsea is playing twice in gameweek 1, i think he could also be looked into.. but since the new signings are on the way, i doubt whether he will start or not.

pienaar is the safer option i think if he signs for everton. seb larsson from sunderland is more of an assist type guy, he can score or give assist from the free kicks.

carrick too is too playing deep for man u. so i think for you its pienaar or meireles are the best options

Anyone see the value in the 5-4.5 mids from solid teams over big hitting teams. The likes of Hangeland, Cuellar, Fabio (I expect QPR to be better this season) Colo, ShawX could all offer excellent value and a simialr number of CS in total to that you'd acquire from a big hitter, all of whom have their problems IMO due to price or lack of nailed-on-ness as I fully expect City to buy at least 1 defender. It's a risk to be sure, but the way BPs are weighted now, strikers pick up most, and defenders who get lots of blocks and clearances tend to well, they are more likely to come from teams in mid-table.

I like this way of thinking but with Chelsea's DGW and City playing Saints first up it will be difficult for people (early on anyway) to look past the big hitters.

yeah those 2 things cloud the issue for sure, but both have issues still

If Chelsea buy a rb the only defenders worth owning will be Terry (at 7 million) or Cashley (at 6.5 who is not delivering the same level of attacking returns he used to) At present time, Lescott at 6.5 represents excellent value as well, as does Clichy, but with Kolarov and Kolo both looking fo a way yet, Mancini will be buying in defence, this may affect their game time

yeah a Chelsea rb, Mancini has said he is close and he is overloaded on attackers so there may be a defender or 2 on the way. Rafa at 5.5 is the really tempting one.

Theres been a debate about this earlier. I think the two main schools of thought are:

      2xbig hitters + 3 rotating for 1 spot

      or

      1xbig hitter + 4 rotating for 2 spots

Think I'm sold on 2nd option, allows upgraded players to rotate, although I'm starting off with 3 (Cole, Ivan and Clichy/Kompany maybe) because of the DGW

I prefer 2nd option as well, if you're rotating for 1 spot there's no point in spending more than 12 million on that spot.

But 'm talking about having no big hitters, so 1 solid defender (Hangeland, Rangel) and then a 2x2 rotation (Sunderland/Newcaslte, Villa/WBA for example)

I have thought about that too, but having at least 1 player you're comfortable with each week from City/Utd gives you some comfort.

Also increases the chance of having to play an early WC if you're selections turn out weaker than you'd hoped.

I'm starting with CITY/CHE/CHE to take advantage of early fixtures but my first few transfers will be with a view to shuffling this into rotatable mid priced options.

It's an interesting one as I can see the attraction of City and Chelsea especially in GW1, and Rafa at his price, and I may yet plump for him (when my exile ends) bu it's worth raising the debate, FPL is all about value, some mid-priced options can easily come close to the big-hitters so you don't lose out there too much, whilst you have more money to spend on other areas where the points are at.

Not seeing a lot of love for Ramires, thought he looked quality end of last season. Albrighton is currently in my team but concerned about game time.

Should be more concerned about the injury.

Personally would only go N Zog or Bent - best wait to see how Lamberts attacking mindset transfers to the Villa players.

I've actually been considering him and it's between Hazard and Ramires for the other Chelsea midfield spot and at the moment, I've chosen Hazard for the time being. Need to look at the lineup for the Community Shield game before I can finally decide who's really coming into my team ultimately.
