Gareth Bale and Gylfi Sigurdsson grab the goals as Spurs see of New York Red Bulls. QPR continue their winning ways with a 3-0 triumph at Wycombe, Anthony Pilkington helps Norwich to a draw against Ajax, Swansea are held by San Jose Earthquakes, while Man City hand five of their Euro 2012 contingent their first game time of pre-season at Oldham:

Wycombe 0 QPR 3
Mark Hughes’ side kept up their 100% pre-season record with a fourth straight win last night. Fabio started in midfield once again for QPR alongside fellow new boy Ji-Sung Park, while Djibril Cisse returned after a recent hamstring scare to lead the line. QPR had several early chances, with the Cisse and Shaun Wright-Phillips both having a couple of opportunities, while Armand Traore was a menace down the left flak before being subbed off with a hamstring knock. Adel Taarabt continued his recent good form and also went close before setting up the opener for Jamie Mackie just before the half-hour mark. After the break, Cisse and Wright-Phillips again came close to finding the net before the latter finally notched the strike his threat deserved, slotting home from a Hogan Ephraim pass on 71 minutes. Hughes made five changes over the space of the second-half, including the reintroduction of Kieran Dyer after long-term injury; the former West Ham man needed just 15 minutes to make an impact, with Nedum Onouha nodding home his corner with three minutes remaining on the clock.

QPR Starting XI: Green; Onuoha, Ferdinand, Hill, Traore (Ephraim 36); Fabio, Park (Derry 73), Taarabt (Dyer 73),Wright-Phillips (Doughty 90); Mackie (Johnson 62), Cisse (Zamora 62).

Oldham 2 Man City XI 1
The City Elite Development Squad made their way to Oldham last night and included several first-team players who have yet to feature in pre-season so far. While the likes of Joe Hart, Joleon Lescott, Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri and Nigel De Jong were all afforded just 45 minutes apiece in the 2-1 defeat, the main point of note here was that City once again lined up in the new 3-5-2 formation they have trialled in the recent tour of Asia. Roque Santa Cruz popped up to grab his side’s only goal but the game was no more than a workout for the regulars before they all departed at the break.

Man City Starting XI: Hart; Facey, McGivern, Lescott,; Wabara, Milner, Nasri, De Jong, Clichy; Santa Cruz, Jelovic.

Subs used: Kennedy, Lawlor, Leigh, Hiwula, Huws, Drury, Rusnak, Bunn, Glendon.

Norwich 1 Ajax 1
Chris Hughton rolled out a 4-4-2 for the game against the Dutch champions. James Vaughan continued up front after his recent impressive pre-season displays and was joined by Grant Holt, while Anthony Pilkington and Elliott Bennett took the wing roles, with new boy Robert Snodgrass on the bench. Pilkington handed his side the lead on just seven minutes with a superbly taken free-kick after Vaughan had been felled on the edge of the box – according to the club’s official website, the latter was a constant menace to Ajax, with his pace causing them problems time and again and drawing several fouls from the Dutch defence. Surprisingly, Vaughan was then replaced at half-time; on came Wes Hoolahan as Hughton went 4-4-1-1, with Holt the lone forward. Ajax took control after the break and limited the hosts to a couple of long-range efforts – Hughton made seven further changes as the game progressed but despite the introduction of Snodgrass with 20 minutes remaining, they were unable to test their opponents and had to display plenty of resilience to see out the game for a draw.

Norwich Starting XI: Ruddy; R. Martin (Ayala 80), Ward (Barnett 80), R. Bennett, Tierney (Lappin 86); E. Bennett (Snodgrass 69), Johnson,(Morison 78),Howson (Surman 69), Pilkington (Crofts 69); Vaughan (Hoolahan 46), Holt

New York Red Bulls 1 Tottenham 2

Gareth Bale made an immediate return to action following his recent ankle injury scare to net his second pre-season goal and help earn Spurs the victory over the Red Bulls. Andre Villas-Boas’ side were trailing at the break but Bale’s header from a Gylfi Sigurdsson corner and then a smart strike from the Icelandic midfielder put Spurs in the ascendency. Sigurdsson came out of the game with a goal and an asssit then: he is currently playing his part at set-pieces and looks assured of some role in that area going into the season kick-off. Villas-Boas began with a 4-2-3-1 formation once again, handing starts to the likes of Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone and David Bentley – all players that have, so far, dipped under the Fantasy radar following injuries. Bale not only played out 74 minutes, he also started in the unfamiliar striker role, with Spurs options limited by Jermain Defoe’s absence due to a family bereavement.

Tottenham Starting XI: Gomes; Walker (Naughton, 60), Dawson, vertonghen (Gallas, 46), Assou-Ekotto (Bassong, 83); Huddlestone (Jenas, 46), Livermore (Carroll, 61); Lennon (Smith, 83), Sigurdsson (Kaboul, 83), Bentley (Kane, 46); Bale (Townsend, 74).

San Jose Earthquakes 2 Swansea 2

Michael Laudrup started Jonathan De Guzman in a deeper central midfield role once more – with reports suggesting Joe Allen is edging closer to a move to Liverpool, it may well be that the Dutchman is pencilled in to take over that position next term. Michu continued in “the hole”, while Wayne Routledge was preferred to Nathan Dyer on the right yet again. Routledge impressed out wide, creating chances for Danny Graham and Michu but the pair failed to take advantage – indeed, the former blasted a couple of opportunities wide before opening the scoring on 41 minutes after a mistake by the opposition defence. The Swans almost went two ahead straight away. Ben Davies – who has turned in some strong performances in the absence of Neil Taylor – set up Luke Moore down the left and the winger played in Michu, who once again failed to trouble the keeper. Chico then put his side further ahead after the break, nodding home his first goal in Swansea colours from an Ashley Williams cross, but Laudrup’s decision to change all 10 of his outfield players disrupted Swansea’s rhythm and allowed the hosts to claw their way back and level the match with a couple of goals later on.

Swansea starting XI: Vorm, Rangel (Richards 45), Chico (Monk 75), Williams (Tate 62), Davies (Bessone 80), Britton (Agustien 62), de Guzman (Gower 75), Michu (Orlandi 80), Routledge (Dyer 45),Graham (Lita 75), Moore (Dobbie 62).

Will Tevez play? If so, you have to at $9m, no??

My opinion: he is a lynchpin player and is every bit as nailed on as Aguero. But his main role is facilitating Aguero and I think Aguero will score a lot more. Probably £2.5m worth of more.

I agree with this to a certain extent; I think both are likely to get the lion's share of game time, I think Aguero will outscore Tevez, but I think, with the possibility of Tevez on penalties, the difference may not be huge and possibly enough to justify saving 2.5

If either Balo or Dzeko moves on, which I think is unlikely, then I would definitely do Aguero to Tevez, but the rotation is just too risky. Particularly if you factor in Champions League.

What makes you think Aguero won't get rested now that Tevez is back?

There wasn't that situation last year so no one knows and the fact that one is 2.5m more than the other in FF means very little with regards to it.

Tevez and Aguero are of equal quality, Balotelli and Dzeko are not, mancini never had the option last year.

It's all guesswork but I'm guessing that Tevez AND Aguero are as nailed on as you could get with Dzeko being a sub and playing the domestic cups and Balotelli fitting in on either flank as and when Mancini fancies it.

Cheers for responses all... I think I might wait till GW1 to see who they start. It just means potentially needing to use a wildcard early on as 2.5m saved can involve a lot of positive changes elsewhere.... thanks all!

      In conclusion, I have Aguero

but he could also be a great FPL prospect. A fully fit and firing Tevez will do well for City. Sometimes we have to put personal feelings aside. I am looking at maybe a Tevez/Aguero double up. That is when I go back on FPL, 4 days and counting.

Porto were solid under AVB. You can't just choose one aspect or role in his management career. You need to consider his previous work too. This is a new club with different personnel and most likely none of the problems he encountered at Chelsea.

Now that is interesting, I haven't heard that before. I always assumed that defensive vulnerability was an inevitable, accepted compromise of the high backline.

Anyone got any Clean Sheet stats for Porto under AVB? 🙂

Spurs are more capable of it I think...it's less of an overhaul for them. AVB was defensively very good at Porto, and with Spurs he seems like he's not trying to upset the balance too much. Dawson could be a huge bargain.

I've done some interesting analysis on defenders' attacking potential. I know that clean sheets is their FPL bread and butter but it is also interesting to look at potential attacking returns, particularly to decide between two same-priced options at the same club.

So, I have looked at career stats in terms of games played, goals, assists and therefore calculated FPL attacking points and points/game average.

Here are the two pairs I have looked at:

    1) Cole vs Ivanovic

    Cole P559, Goals 15, Assists 46 > FPL points 274 = 0.49/game
    Ivan P271, Goals 28, Assists 25 > FPL pts 268 = 0.99/game

    2) Demel vs McCartney

    Demel P323, Goals 14, Assists 20 > FPL pts 164 = 0.51/game
    McCartney P270, Goals 2, Assists 13 > FPL pts 64 = 0.24/game

I know there are limitations, e.g. this doesn't take account of where or what level the games were played and that it doesn't take into account "nailed on-ness". Also, goals should probably be weighted slightly higher due to bonus points.

But, I think that it is a good indicator of whether a defender is "attack-minded" and likely to produce returns. Just thought I'd share this.

That's interesting for those torn between Ivanovic and Cole. Ivanovic doubling his score per game. Granted Cole is more nailed on but Iva should play most weeks.

That's not what the numbers are saying, they're saying that - on average - Ivanovic gets twice as many attacking returns. The numbers work out to 1 point more every two weeks.

I think that front three may be the way to go. Not so sure on getting Hang and Williams though, may be better to spread the joy with some 4.5s so you don't have a dud 4.0 in there (2 if Demel goes south).

Similarly I think with this kind of strategy Pienaar and Michu are risks, you could downgrade one to Maloney/Dyer and spend the 1.0 elsewhere, and despite the heavy front line the team would still be fairly balanced.

Just thinking about the United formation, anyone reckon that it'll change to something very different maybe even Christmas tree formation (4-3-2-1)? That would allow a 2 winger, 1 holding, 2 SS and 1 striker position. Would suit Kagawa and Rooney (as he has preferred to be playing a bit deeper) and play one of Chico or Welbeck at the top? Not a very common formation now but perhaps it could be a chance for United to change it around a bit.

I think that leaves the centre of midfield a little light, most teams will play with 2 CM sitting in front of the back 4 nowadays. Could work against the smaller teams though where they'll have most of the possession anyway.

I think they will play 4-2-3-1

They have bought Kagawa specifically for the centre of that 3 because that was the type of player that was lacking previously to play this properly, hence Rooney was sort of playing that role, but he's not a specialist

      i.e. most of the time:

      Back 5
      Carrick - Scholes/Cleverley
      Valencia - Kagawa - Nani/Welbeck
      Rooney

I reckon Rooney, Valencia and Kagawa are fairly nailed on unless RVP goes there (unlikely)

It will be 4-2-3-1. Kagawa playing as the CAM with Rooney upfront. When Kagawa doesn't start it will probably revert to 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 with Welbeck or Hernandez in. Kagawa will be used in alot of away games, and big games in the CL. Rooney has played deeper last season, but don't think he's as suited to that as Kagawa. Much rather see him right upfront and just concentrating on scoring.

Kagawa's main competition is Welbeck and Hernandez.

My thoughts on Spurs offense is I don't think it would be crazy at all to have Ade, Bale, AND Siggy if VDV weren't in the picture. I believe that Rafa will be the impact sub this season instead of the other way around, which makes me a bit sad, but I think it's necessary. Siggy is just too damned good at set pieces, has more endurance, and pace than Rafa. I'll still be wearing his shirt, though 😛

Every time I consider him I think back to when he had that insane run of something like twelve 2 pointer's. I wouldn't get him based on fixtures, because he is one of those players that fails in easier games I found out the hard way last season.

Swansea cover? Cover is something you have to ensure that you get points from Man City thrashing someone 5-0, not on Swansea doing OK.
