Aston Villa maintain their unbeaten start under Paul Lambert, with Brett Holman amongst the goals again in a 2-0 win at Peterborough, while Stoke have to settle for a draw in Kansas after Asmir Begovic is beaten by a deflected header from more than 30 yards out.

Peterborough 0 Aston Villa 2
With his central defensive options somewhat limited, Paul Lambert fielded Nathan Baker and Chris Herd in the heart of the back-four for the trip to Peterborough last night. Shay Given returned between the posts, Enda Stevens continued at left-back ahead of Stephen Warnock, while Charles N’Zogbia was handed an advance role in attack alongside Andreas Weimann. Daniel Johnson was handed starting role on the left flank and was first to threaten before N’Zogbia had an effort saved from the edge of the box. The former Wigan man fired wide, while Stevens also went close to scoring before Villa’s attacks finally proved dividend, with Johnson slotting home an Eric Lichaj cross. Stevens was praised highly for his display by the club’s official website, with his attacking threat a constant menace to the hosts – if he can cement a place in Lambert’s starting XI, he could be an intriguing option at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). His cut-back to Stephen Ireland allowed the midfielder to tee up Brett Holman for Villa’s second – the Australian international is now his side’s top scorer in pre-season, with a couple of goals under his belt.

While the result continued Villa’s unbeaten start under the new managers, Lambert was left reeling yesterday evening with the news that Richard Dunne and Gabby Agbonlahor are both set to be sidelined for the start of the season. The centre-half is out for six to eight weeks after undergoing a groin operation – with Carlos Cuellar and James Collins both leaving during the summer, new boy Ron Vlaar already looks a key player in the heart of defence. Agbonlahor will be missing from action for four to five weeks due to a knee injury sustained earlier in pre-season.

Aston Villa Starting XI: Given; Lichaj, Herd, Baker (Clark, 81), Stevens (Warnock, 81); Delph (Bannan, 70); Carruthers (El Ahmadi, 70), Ireland (Burke, 81), Johnson (Holman70); Weimann, N’Zogbia (Delfouneso, 74).

Kansas 1 Stoke 1
Kenwyne Jones was handed a role alongside Peter Crouch last night, with Jonathan Walters shifted to the left wing. Robert Huth began the game at right-back but was subbed off for Ryan Shotton on 18 minutes after picking up a knock but returned to replace Ryan Shawcross after the break in the heart of defence. Jones and Crouch both had chances to score but failed to trouble the keeper as the first-half finished goalless – Jones than made way for Cameron Jerome shortly after half-time. The Potters began to take control in the second 45 and created chances aplenty; Walters, Jerome and Huth came close, while Crouch was presented with a trio of opportunities to break the deadlock but failed to take any. Tony Pulis made a number of changes as the game progressed and it was substitute Michael Tonge who eventually gave the visitors the advantage, slotting home from the spot after being fouled in the box. Stoke looked to have the game wrapped up but it finished all-square after an Asmir Begovic clearance struck the head of a Kansas player over 30 yards away and flew past the stopper deep into time added on.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic; Huth (Shotton 18), Shawcross (Huth 46), Upson, Wilson; Etherington (Delap 69), Whitehead (Arismendi 73), Palacios (Ness 55), Walters (Tonge 77); Crouch (Sidibe 65), Jones (Jerome 50).

In Other News
Everton gave a handful of first-team players a run-out for their match with Tranmere in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final. David Moyes handed the likes of Seamus Coleman and Jack Rodwell 90 minutes apiece, while Ross Barkley and Apostolos Vellios also featured for the Toffees – the latter’s goal wasn’t enough to stop his side from slipping to a 2-1 defeat.

The second point of note is just a heads-up over the upcoming friendlies due to take place the midweek before the season starts. The likes of Argentina take on Germany on Wednesday August 15, for example, and although the vast majority of us will be sweating on Sergio Aguero to get through the match without sustaining any sort of injury, it’s somewhat reassuring that the game will take place in Frankfurt – not Argentina, as some on the site fretted over yesterday. So no long flights on the agenda, then. A list of the full schedule is linked above.

Although if it did a 4-4-2 formation would have to be on the cards for Arsenal, no one can replace Song that well, its a waste to play arteta there.

Lichaj will be first choice no doubt, but don't be surprised to see Lowton coming on off the bench in some games (Clark on the other hand is nailed on with Dunney out!). It's the Villa LB position that intruigues me the most. If Warnock doesn't leave he could be a good differential (he was a great FPL option a couple of seasons back).

As I've only done one season of FPL, I haven't had a chance to do a H2H league. I'm thinking about trying it, but I'm afraid I might make some decisions I normally wouldn't that might hurt my team overall to try to get results in any given week. Is that off base?

When you gather a team, you need a benchmark. A team that's very generic. That's when you start gathering all other infos about other players, elites or underdogs, and work your way up from there. There is no freaking way my team will just be another copy of it because I think that dude will score me 60 points with this team alone. Gotta have some integrity and principles of your own way.

Jap/Hon - boring as shit, in the last half hour they both stopped trying to score

UAE/Sen- Pretty good, both going for it, but I left early to beat the rush.

5 hours in the stadium, and you're not allowed to go for a fag!?

Afternoon good folk of FF Land...First RMT for the new season. Appreciate any thoughts.

Hart/4.0 - Hart starts every week (expecting 15-20 clean sheets this season and hate to have to waste a tfer on a keeper)

Lescott/Cole/Hughs/McCartney/Gunter - 0.5 to do Cole to Vidic for gw 2 potentially

Ben Arfa/McClean Bale Walters/Nolan - Walters and Nolan will rotate home games for 4th Mid spot

Rooney/Tevez/Graham - Rooney can be Torres for dgw and tferd to Rooney for gw2. Enough Fwds in 8.5 to 9.5 bracket (Bent, Cisse, Ade) that can come in for Tevez should he not get game time.

I like the flexibility but have a feeling I'm missing out by excluding Hazard/Lampard (especially for dgw) or by going Tevez over Aguero.

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to give it a once over.

Seems a bit light in midfield with only one big hitter, 11m is also a lot to spend on your keepers imo

like all parts except for midfield - IMO nolan is 1m more expensive from noble which best spent elsewhere, Barfa has a tough schedule to start with and rotation risks, and walters was just on poor form and would stay away until he shows improvement.
      bale and mclean i like.

If tevez is rotated and you will lack city attaching cover. I think that you should start with Aguero. It is easier to downgrade in future.

I might try to find 1 extra M for Hart+4,0 myself (Friedel/Fed now) looks nice
Lescott if they dont buy another CB. Hughs-Hangeland would be great, maybe even better than Cole-Vidic.
Barfa, not sure.. not a great start and purely depends on if they continue to play 4-3-3 or switch back to 4-4-2. McClean/Larsson is giving me headache. Not a fan of Walters.
Tevez should be fine, if not easy to downgrade (possibly Podolski, Jelavic)

I have Hazard atm, but not sure at all about him.. is he really that attacking/creative without set pieces?

      Just based on last season:

      Hart - 17 clean sheets - 166 points costs you 7.0
      Foster - 10 clean sheets - 140 points costs you 5.0

Foster you're likely to rotate and perhaps gain an extra 5-10 points when you avoid his bad games. But lets call that a 20 point differential for 2m - 10points per million

Walters - 140 points for 6.5 (you can use McClean here but Walters got the most points)
      Sessegnon - 161 points for 8.0

      thats a 21 point differential for 1.5m - 14 points per million

In my view - you should be looking at maximising points per million, and this is best done in the outfield, not at keeper.

    A'noon all,

Fairly generic I know, but any thoughts on this gw1 team and transfers would be appreciated:

    DDG (Federici)

Lescott - Ivano - Gunter (Saylor - Demel)

Kagawa - Hazard - Pienaar - Noble (El Ahmadi)

    Torres - Petric - Aguerro

gw 2: Torres to Roon, Hazard to Bale
    gw w3: Ivano to Vertonghen

Can see Verthonghen being essential, his goal/assist stats are amzing (1 goal in 4 games pretty much).

    Cheers

    Green, Foster
Lescott, S Taylor, McCartney, Jenkinson, Bardsley
    Toure, Siggy, Guthrie, McLean, Barfa
    Torres, Aguero, Petric

And £2.5m in the bank. Bound to look very different by game week one. I really like Pienaar and Jelly but am put off by Having Everton players at the start of the season.

imho....2.5 is wasted in you bank, especially with a DGW to start. I am not one to take hits, however, i nthis situation it is worth it. I feel that 3 CHE players are essential.

      1. Becasue of the extra game, your expected gamble is only 2 pts. (if the player does nothing)
      2. The extra transfer in GW 2 or 3 will allow you to choose a player who is on form early.
      3. Becasue so many players are active in the early days of FPL....there will be plenty of transfers/in/out and by jumping on band wagon early you will could raise your team value (just keep eye on FISO)

our teams all come off the rails at some point in the season, but a word of advice if you are choosing between Lamps and Hazard:

If you have an accident you can't put your LAMPARD lights on.

I would actually rather go for Lampard than Hazard, honestly. You can bet on him this season he'll put another 10 goals like he did every season. 😉

With RDM, I trust he'll get more than 10 games. If he were to get rid of Lamps, he would have followed AVB's footprint by benching him and not have won the doubles.

Apologies, I know it's a bit generic but any chance of a RMT out of 10? Think it's fairly balanced - a top keeper and 2 big-ish hitters in defence, midfield & attack

    DDG Fed
    Ivanovic Clichy Hughes Cuellar Clyne
    Bale Kagawa N'Zogbia Noble Maloney
    Rooney* Aguero Petric

*Torres for GW1. Ivanovic will become Cole if Chelsea sign a RB. Not crazy about the last 3 midfield spots but can't find a better way to spend 16.5...

      Clichy - rotation risk
      Kagawa - Rotation risk, unproven
      Zog - Aston Villa

Cant help it, could look soo much better if u do Kun - Tevez
      Clichy - Lescott
      Hughes - Hangeland
      Kagawa - 9,5 (Mata/Hazard/Lampard/Siggy)
