Roberto Martinez dipped into the summer transfer market for the second time earlier this week by acquiring Ivan Ramis from Real Mallorca for an undisclosed fee. The 27-year-old centre-half follows Fraser Fyvie to the DW Stadium after knocking back the advances of West Ham and arrives at Wigan on a three-year contract:

The deal represents something of a coup for the Latics. Earlier in the week, the La Liga outfit had posted an article on their official website confirming they had agreed terms with the Hammers and the player was set for a medical but, according to Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, his manager is the man to thank for the about-turn:

It’s down to the influence of Roberto. The player doesn’t speak English and didn’t want to go to West Ham, who had already agreed a deal. But Roberto asked me to go out to Mallorca where I met their chairman and with the club in receivership, they accepted my offer and then I went to see the player.

The Statistics

Ramis began his career as a 17-year old in the Mallorca youth system back in 2001, where he scored three goals in 50 appearances before stepping up to the senior side in the 2004-05 season. Initially struggling to nail down a first-team role, he was farmed out to Real Valladolid in 2005-06, making 30 appearances for the second division side before returning to his parent club for the following campaign.

The centre-half continued to feature irregularly for the La Liga outfit before finally nailing down a regular spot in the first XI in 2009-10 and, while he has notched five times in the past couple of seasons, Ramis’ tendency to accrue cautions has been his stand-out statistic, with 16 bookings in his last two campaigns in the Spanish top-flight. Over his time at the club, he also attracted interest from Celtic and Sevilla and has represented his country at Under 19, 21 and 23 levels. Ramis featured a total of 164 times for Mallorca, finding the net on nine occasions.

The Prospects

A change of tactics after the mid-point of last season not only brought about a revival in Wigan’s fortunes, it has clearly affected Martinez’s thinking when it comes to player acquisitions this summer. The Latics started the previous campaign with a conventional back-four but the switch to a 3-4-2-1, with three centre-halves preferred at the back, means Martinez needs cover in the defensive area.

Bearing in mind Gary Caldwell and Maynor Figueroa missed just two league games between them all season, it’s likely that Ramis is vying with Antolin Alcaraz for that third spot at the back – his compatriot Piscu is also available, though failed to make much impact and featured just five times for the Latics in 2011/12. Ramis not only offers a real physical presence and strong aerial ability, his distribution from deep could also see him forge a way into Martinez’s first-team plans for the upcoming campaign.

In terms of expected cost across the Fantasy games, a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) starting price of 4.5 seems likely for Ramis- Figueroa has also been handed this initial valuation, however, and is certainly more nailed-on at the start of the new campaign. We can anticipate a cost of around the 5.0 mark Sky Sports game, considering the likes of Caldwell and Figueroa at 5.5 and 5.2 respectively.

When it comes to investing in a backline that returned just eight clean sheets last time round, however, Emmerson Boyce offers a far better solution than his defensive team mates. Granted, he is slightly more expensive than the majority of his Martinez’s defenders – 5.0 in FPL and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game – but his out-of-position role on the right of Wigan’s four-man midfield boosts his appeal considerably more and is likely to deter many Fantasy managers from investing in Ramis.

When assessing their prospects for the start of the season, it’s worth remembering that Wigan’s exploits towards the tail end of last term were arguably the finest example of looking at form over fixtures. While many wrote them off and expected them to drop into the Championship, the Latics racked up seven wins in their last nine, including triumphs over Newcastle, Arsenal, United and Liverpool, with Martinez’s new system going from strength to strength as the campaign came to a close.

The big question is whether Wigan will start where they left off. Certainly, home clashes with Stoke and Fulham in the first six Gameweeks will hold no fear, while a trip to Southampton could well be prosperous. With Chelsea, United and a visit to Sunderland also on their opening agenda, though, many Fantasy managers will be somewhat reluctant to go overboard in snapping up Wigan’s mid-price options, despite that stunning end to the previous season.

Hi all! Anybody around for a quick RMT on this little lot?

Federici (De Gea in GW3), Cerny
Lescott, Ivanovic (Hangelaand in GW3), Dawson, Lowton, Fonte
Larsson, Lampard (Sigurdsson in GW3), Taraabt, Ireland, Robson-Kanu
    Rooney, Torres, Aguerro

Means a 4 point hit in GW3 but apart from that i think it looks pretty good?

I am fairly confident with my team. However I have gone for no Chelsea players at all. everyone seems to be packing their team with chelsea for the double gameweek and taking a risk with Torres. Do you really think it is essential though?

    my team for reference is

    foster + begovic
    clichy + rafeal + gunter + fonte + stevens
bale + nasri + kagawa + ben arfa + guthrie
    rooney + aguero + pog

Don't forget that Chelsea are the European Champions and they have a double game week against the less than mighty Wigan and Reading! Sure, it could all end in tears and rotation is a minefield but if you get this wrong your season's over!

Season over after the first week? That is a ridiculus thing to say.

The only thing I am really considering is changing bale to mata or hazard for that first week since bale doesnt really have a favourable match up

It's certainly not ridiculous matey. Is it not far from inconceivable that Chelsea will win both games to nil and the likes of Torres and Hazard will rack up a few points?

If you're Chelsea-less you'll spend a whole lot of time breaking into the top million!!

          Season effectively over, no?

well seeing as they only kept 10 clean sheets last year i would say its unlikely they keep 2 in a row. Especially with all the new players in the team.

Torres didnt do well last year so no reason he should start his season well. He got very lucky in the euros with his goals so that doesnt really matter.

hazard is a new player, coming into a team that has three new midfielders this season, that got three last year, which means very pacted so a lot of rotation and testing early on so who knows who will be the main man.

but even if chelsea do amazing that is one good week for people. It doesnt mean anything over the whole course of the season, there are lots of decisions to be made before the season is out.

Good luck then D. You're gamble may well pay off but I'm going with the percentage call. For me, GW1 is far to early in the season to be playing a high risk strategy.

But do you really think that Rooney or Kagawa or Rafael @ Everton is really better than a Chels with a double vs. Wigan and Reading?

Needn't do 3, but refusing to even have 1 seems pyrrhic.

rooney is likely to do better than anyone no matter the opposition.

united again can keep a clean sheet against anyone and the way rafaael finished the season i see him being huge this year.

kagawa is a risk but like young last year i think he is giong to make a big inital impact. hopefully he wont petter out tho.

So many options in this new look chelsea team tho that I feel like no player is a sure thing to do well, and are almost all are likely to be rotated.

I'm a Utd guy, but that's just nutty. Rooney could easily do nothing and Aguero get a hat trick.

United, excellent in defense when all are healthy, don't have everyone healthy. They can easily - and I'm sure they will - concede @ Everton.

I like Kagawa: a punt but flair if he comes through.

I agree Chels is a minefield, but they have (counts on fingers) twice the games. Twice. 2. 😀

what i mean is rooney is the best player to have in. No one player is more important to any team than rooney is to united. you can argue that van persi is, but it was only last year. rooney has been the main man for years. so he is always in my opinon the most likely to do well. obvisously he wont be the highest scoring every week, but more often than not he will be up there.

Imo you should stay clear from Kagawa the first ten gws, because of fixtures and unprovenness. Maybe jump on him as a bandwagon if he ever becomes one, but no point taking a risk on him with those fixtures. You might want some Man Utd cover gw 2-4, but those players shold be proven and guaranteed gametime. Personally im staying away from Man Utd cover the first ten gws, even though I might have Rooney.

Multiple reasons. Countries should govern themselves, especially when they're in a union with a country far more populous with a largely different collective political will, meaning that our voice is seldom influential.

Salmond is no different to any other politician. No he doesn't want to be a modern day Robert the Bruce, he wants what he thinks is best for his country. Whether you agree with it or not, you can hardly slate a politician for doing that.

Bank of England would set interest rates if we were to retain sterling as the currency. You know the BoE is independent of Westminster though yeah? Gordon Brown ceded political control of it in 1997. Can't say for certain whether we'd not get into NATO, Scotland occupies a tactically significant position in the North Atlantic valuable to current members.

But even if we were, who honestly cares. You actually want your country to be a hostile country?!?! I couldn't be any prouder of my nation than if we stood back from conflicts. I also don't care about having any wank-fanasies about being a 'big' nation. This is one thing that annoys me about the UK at present. Why the need for delusions of grandeur? I'd far rather "live in a country nobody cares about" that concentrated on solving our own problems and become a truly egalitarian and peaceful nation than continue to live in one that is the US's lapdog and go gallivanting around the Middle East killing civilians.

Ireland Rugby team is beyond Irish nationalism though. The team represent the whole ISLAND of Ireland ( i.e. the Republic plus N. Ireland) as opposed to the sovereign state that is (the Republic of) Ireland. I live in Glasgow, and the majority of my mates are loyalist N. Irishmen. They still support the Irish rugby team

Hows this team look for GW1:

    ……………..Federici………….

    A.Cole….Lescott….Hangeland..

    Silva…..Hazard(C)…Kagawa…Noble..

    Aguero…Torrres…Pogrebnyak

Subs : Friedel, Britton, Barnett, Fonte

I dont think I can set my team up for transfer for GW2 seen as how Man City and Chelsea both have enticing openers, then in GW2 you’d want more Utd and Spurs. Should I go for a high score in GW1 which likely will mean an early wildcard or set it up with less Chelsea/City players and more Spurs/Utd whom both have a poor opening fixture but better GW2 onwards?

When is the captain poll going up?

I think it's too reliant on not having any injuries, if those three transfers are key for you.

I'd probably just get Petric from the start instead. Very unsure on Nani and VDV too, one rotation risk and one whose situation I'm a bit unsure on.

Doubling on City D is sort of a no-brainer (respect to Garg), for me.

They have a good run of fixtures, a healthy & stable defense with a quality 'keeper, a sweet fixture list early on, and will likely score bags of goals. Plus, an Italian manager.

I have a wait and see policy on Newcastle and Tottenham's defence before deciding which 1 to join. Newcastle have a few tricky opening games

If Ba and Cisse fire close to what they were doing last year, I'd say that's not a half-bad idea ... and value saved, to boot. Saylor rather than Colo for you?

I'm quite the fan actually. Newcastle looked in control with him slotting in. The goal threat's far superior than Hangeland, as I see in many an RMT.

that is true, however having it feels utterly decadent when you have a proper top tier defender. I've got Vidic just now and it feel gooooooood

City defence is costly and rotation prone. I do also believe some people spend their big gun money in def on a Chelsea player because of the dgw. A perfect def combo is 1 big gun and 4 rotating 4.0-5.0 players. In those cases that big gun need to be 100% reliable. Only Kompany is that in the City def, and those 2.0 extras you have to spend on him compared to a cheapie could easily be used better in a different place in the squad. Also cheap defenders are way more reliable than cheap midfielders/strikers.

I don't agree with most of your ideas, but it's one way at looking at things I suppose.

What I would like to note here however is that I think the belief in rotating cheap defenders here might hurt people. It can backfire awfully, I've experienced it myself. Yeah I'm looking at you, Gonzalo Jara.

He's perked up in recent training sessions. Looking much happier, might have something to do with the imminent arrival of a certain Spanish player.

The list of clubs that could afford him, need a striker & guarantee him a starting position is very small indeed.

Not sure what the Berb move is ... of course he'd want RVP. Criminy.

But if you meant 'bring in a sullen, sulking poacher who doesn't fit in with the team style', then I agree.

Maybe his injury record & age is dawning on some. Way to much emphasis is being placed on one injury free season.

The defenses are not close, imo. I guess we'll see. Seems to me there's a bunch of Gallic nearly-men in that midfield. No disrespect/wum to you intended.

If he does stay it'd be a disgrace if he remains captain. I suppose United fans forgave Rooney after his disgraceful behaviour 2 years ago so Arsenal fans may too
