West Brom boss Steve Clarke moved to boost his up front options earlier this week with the acquisition of Swedish forward Markus Rosenberg on a three-year deal. The 29-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a Bosman after his contract with German side Werder Bremen expired earlier this summer and will add plenty of experience to the Baggies ranks, having plied his trade in three of Europe’s main leagues over the last few years:

Rosenberg’s fitness is clearly a major issue for his manager right now ahead of the new season, though. The Swede hasn’t trained since Euro 2012 and is some way behind his team mates – with the new season just over a week away, the Baggies boss warned it may take a little longer to get the forward up to speed:

Markus works hard for the team and his energy levels are fantastic. He joins us after a seven-week break, which is not ideal, so his energy levels are not fantastic at the moment. Playing in the Premier League, no matter where you’ve been, it’s a different league. And all the players we’ve brought in will take a little bit of time to adjust. Markus will take a bit of time physically to catch up with the rest. We’ll work him as hard as we feel necessary between now and the start of the season. But, if he’s not ready then, he’ll be ready when he is.

The Statistics

Rosenberg’s career began in his native country as part of the Malmo youth set-up at the age of five. Working his way through the ranks, he made his debut for the club in 2001 but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, scoring four goals in 40 appearances over three seasons before moving on loan to Swedish outfit Halmstads. Over the course of a single campaign, the 6 foot 1 forward demonstrated his eye for goal with 14 strikes in 26 league matches seeing him finish the season as top scorer in the division but he again struggled at his parent club in the following campaign – 12 appearances harvested four goals before Ajax came calling in 2005-06 for a fee of €5.3m.

Beginning strongly in his new surroundings, Rosenberg was particularly successful when fielded as part of a front two. His first season produced 12 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances but the purchase of Klass-Jan Huntelaar saw his shifted out to the left flank and the goals and game time subsequently dried up – with only a couple of assists in nine games in the first half of the 2006-07 season, he moved to Werder Bremen in January 2007. Over three-and-a-half seasons with the Bundesliga club, Rosenberg played 90 league games, scoring 30 times and assisting 14, before a loan spell with Spanish side Racing Santander brought nine goals and an assist from 33 matches. Returning to Bremen last season, he struck up a strong partnership with former Chelsea man Claudio Pizarro and, over the course of 33 league games, scoring 10 and assisted five of his side’s 49 goals.

Rosenberg has featured for his country at Under 21 level nine times, scoring three goals, while his step up to the senior side has harvested six goals from 33 appearances.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind this is Clarke’s first managerial job, the jury may well be out on the Baggies boss until we get a better idea of his tactics and style of play. So far in pre-season, West Brom have utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 but the latter system is far more suited to Rosenberg’s strength and aerial ability and role as a target man.

Certainly, in terms of attacking output, the midlands club can hardly do worse than last season; under Roy Hodgson they scored a mere 21 goals at home and over the course of the 2011/12 campaign, they racked up 45 goals – a tally worse than two of the relegated teams, with a reliance on defensive resilience steering them to top-flight safety. Clarke is keen to improve upon that home record in particular and revealed he plans to go on the offensive at the Hawthorns – a positive sign for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Baggies’ mid-price attacking assets.

In terms of price, Rosenberg is likely to come in around the 6.0 mark in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the same cost as Shane Long but 1.0 less than Peter Odemwingie, due to the fact that the Nigerian notched double figures (10) last term for the second season running. With the pair coming in at 8.0 and 7.7 in the Sky Sports game respectively, Rosenberg could offer a cheaper route into the Baggies forward line when his price is released in the next few days – considering Odemwingie has been mainly used out wide by Clarke in pre-season so far, the new boy could prove a decent differential if Clarke’s attacking intentions do, indeed, come to fruition.

Rosenberg’s lack of fitness affords us a chance to keep a safe distance initially, then, and assess his side’s form under their new boss as the season gets underway. Looking at the fixture schedule, it’s fair to say Clarke hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts – with home clashes against Merseyside pair Liverpool and Everton added to trips to Spurs and Fulham, a Hawthorns showdown with promoted Reading looks the only real enticing showdown over the first six Gameweeks before their schedule begins to ease a little.

Right, I've got £6m in the bank...which midfield big hitter(s) do I bring in and which of the following do I bin?

    Toure (£8m), Michu (£6.5m), N'Zogbia (£6.5m), Noble (£5m), Pienaar (£6,5m) - pretty set on the last two.

It's a decent midfield, especially if you're set on the last two. Definitely one packed with starters who have easy fixtures.
Maybe you could upgrade other areas?

What's so good about Noble? He will get a 6 as he best score all season, you want to start him ver often
Nolan for 6, Scholes / Dyer for 5.5 or Gibson / Maloney are better budget buys

Noble is a penalty taker and is cheap for a starting midfielder (let alone one that has spot kick responsibilities). I generally rotate depending on fixtures, I'm not one to pick a core 11 and a cheap 4 subs.

That's what I mean, you'd be lucky to pick him on that day that he gets a penalty. And you will find your self picking other players with greater threat even though the fixture is tougher

Maybe, maybe. But surely, as opposed to chucking in a £4m midfielder, he is a better bet...particularly as I can play all five midfielders or he could get drafted in from the bench.

I'd only consider him as back up 5th mid for cheapness
I'm having Scholes tho - well rested, good fixtures, tends to start season strongly and is more assured of starts with cleverly recovering from the Olympics
Dyer as well- much greater threat than Noble, good fixtures and especially assured if starts with Sinclair coming back from he olympics

    I've got
Friedel and Green in goal (rotate well, both from teams who have a decent start and should have improving defences).
Steven Taylor, Hangeland, Baines, Ivanovic and Jenkinson in defence (the first four come from good(ish in Fulham's case) defences and offer attacking threat and Jenkinson is a cheap probable starter for the first month in Arsenal's back four).
Torres, Pobregnyak and Jelavic up front (the first two to take advantage of the double gameweek and Jelavic on the strength of his excellent form last season).

The other option is that I hang fire, keep the £6m banked, and then have added flexbility once the dust settles and we know the scoring value of the likes of RVP, VDV, Siggy, Moses, Dempsey etc etc. (however I got lambasted for keeping £6m in the bank on here earlier!)

Dont see the point in Jenkinson. You'll only have to save a mill to upgrade later + he is shit. Take the hit and get Kosielny instead - more baps and greater goal threat (though less chance of assists but as i say Jenkinson is shit)

Fair play. I might bring Kosielny in or look at other options. That post was supposed to be tagged on to one above. My midfield, for the record, is:
Noble, Pienaar, Yaya, Michu, N'Zogbia (Noble for cheapness and set pieces, Pienaar after blistering form last season and the other three for relative goal threat against value (although, as above, I am swayable on them if people think I can get better value). £6m in the bank.

I've gone for Kagawa - bit of a risk, but I think he'll hit the ground running. I might bottle it and go for Valencia. The thing is, goals are worth more as they tend to come with bonus points - Valencia doesn't score many, he's the master assister. Kagawa scored 17 goals in the Bundesliga last year (as well as 10 assists).

Ha! im struggling with utd too! Ive heard kagawa has international commitments early season and valencia keeps being played in defence so my first 2 choices are out!

Evra performs better with vidic in the team so im thinking either of them

Rooney...after international summers? never returns in any form!

i might take a punt on Anderson (5.5m) he started last season well, and fergie keeps giving him the opportunity. at the very least its a cheap option allowing you to see how utd shape up 1st couple of games of the season then perhaps transfer out any chelsea players you have?

ok, so not changed the team for 4 days, what do we think?

    Davis/Green

    Kolarov, Hangeland, Boyce, Williams, Cuellar

    Lampard, Siggy, Michu, Tarrabt, Maloney

    Aguero, Rooney, Petric

0.5 in bank. Only thigs that worry me are

    Boyce
    Lamps
Rooney (I want him but am tempted by Tevez over him for GW1. I don't buy this Rooney is too fat crap. I'ts pre-season he's played 3 times in 3 months, he will be fine come the start of the season.

kind of, but not for a while. Only issue with Tevez is that I'd want Rooney GW2 I think, though I could be persuaded to hold off until GW4 to get a bit of the QPR action for Teguero

I think it's completely possible for RVP to start the first two games and be subbed off at 60 minutes odd for Giroud. That way Giroud can be eased in, and that's what Wenger said he wants.
Also we don't have a qualification round so he won't be UEFA bound.

Hey dude, worked out my team and transfers for the first 8 game weeks. Barring nightmares, injuries and suspensions it gives me the following number of home players. G/w 1. 8. G/w2. 9. Then. 7, 6, 7, 8, 9, 8. All with pretty solid fixtures and no hits. Obviously there will be the odd fix I will need to do somewhere but very very happy with it just now

Only 1 for Chelsea coverage? I hate to say it but go with Torres to Rooney in GW2.
I'm also unsure on Lampard. He's on pens and corners but will likely sit deeper. Mata might be a better shout. I'm waiting for CS to make my choice on Chelsea midfield.
Also unsure on Larsson - Sunderland are short of goals in pre-season - I might wait and see how they fare.
As for Maloney - with Moses disappearing I'm staying well away from Wigan.

Well have to defend very well in the first 6-8 games to give Kagawa (/and others) a chance to bed in...I'm a bit nervous

Yes, Don't like their fixtures for defensive returns at all in the first 10 games. Midfield minefield and rooney looking balooney. Only got Valencia for their cover

I'm looking at Valencia but I'm in no rush. I will try to remain flexible in case Rooney/RVP get going.

Lukaku's agent says he's 100% going on loan to a Premier League club, but ruled out Fulham.

At 6.5, anybody interested in him?

Oh, yeah. It quoted the agent as saying a rival club, which, considering the Fulham shout I figured meant one of the London clubs. But that's not a cert. QPR/Reading, maybe? Could see that happening.

Well it depends who he signs for doesn't it? Don't really see where he will be first choice though to be honest and at 6.5 I'd rather punt on Holt, Graham or Petric.

    A couple of quick questions:

    1) With Hazard on a DGW should i have him as captain or go with my other choice (Aguero) The reason i ask is Hazard likely to start both games?

    2) I have no Tottenham in my team so was thinking of changing Ivanovic to Walker or Hazard to Bale after GW1. Which do you think is best or shall i just stick with the two Chelsea?

    Thanks.

Ok, Boyce, worth 5 million yay or nay? Putting aside the fact that he plays for Wigan. He is effectively OOP.

But he does play for Wigan. I'd definitely prefer Coloccini/Saylor/Williams/Hangeland/ShawX/Dawson (if he's nailed on) over Boyce. He does have attacking potential I don't deny it, but attacking potential is a BONUS for a defender. His main priority is to keep clean sheets and I don't think 5.0 for a Wigan DF is value.

Even Raylor got most of his points from clean sheets. I would build a defence focussing on them.

Boyce looks good on paper, but in reality? Perhaps an early transfer, particularly as he's mid priced and not bargain bucket.

Will either of them play regularly, though?

Robson-Kanu and McCleary have been sharing time on the RW for Reading. And when Kebe returns, they'll both be glued firmly to the bench.

And I doubt if El Ghanassy will start straight away.
