In the second of our “Burning Question” articles our contributors attempt the seemingly impossible; to predict the form of Wigan, arguably the most unpredictable team in Premier League history.

Take last season’s exploits, for example. At the end of October 2011, Wigan’s future as a top-flight team looked bleak as they sat bottom of the table, licking their wounds after six successive defeats. By the end of January they were four points adrift of the pack and seemingly down and out but, to Roberto Martinez’s credit, the Latics ushered in one of the top-flight’s greatest ever spring cleans. From March to May the Lancashire outfit notched up seven precious victories and claimed the scalps of some of the Premier League’s biggest names. The 2-1 victory away to Liverpool on March 24 was just the start as, incredibly, Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle all succumbed to a rejuvenated Wigan.

The key reason for the change was a shift in formation, using Emerson Boyce and Jean Beausejour as wingbacks in a 3-4-3 in attack that reverted to a 5-4-1 when in defence. This tactic relied heavily on the engines of Boyce and Beausejour and both duly delivered with gutsy and creative displays. Whether they are able to continue their fine form down the flanks this coming season will be crucial to the Latics’ success, as will be the goal scoring form of Franco di Santo, the most likely contender to spearhead the three-pronged attack alongside Shaun Maloney and Chelsea target Victor Moses. The early fixture list has also been reasonably kind (CHE, sot, STO, mun, FUL, sun) with only a couple of giants looming on the horizon for Wigan to bring down to size.

Mark says…
I’d really like to think that they can hit the ground running. Their incredible end of season form, defying the fixture list, was one of my highlights of last season. At one point, with Victor Moses conspiring to ensure I was ridiculed on every turn, I said some rather harsh things about Wigan in the ScoutCast – Granville will remember them well. I went home and felt so awful, I edited my rant before we published. That’s how much I admire Martinez – I’ll happily edit the ScoutCast to be sure not to upset him.

Last season was a pure victory for the likeable Spaniard and his defiant belief in a tactical system and the players he had available to implement it. While he barely registered on the Fantasy richter scale, Jean Beausejour turned out to be a key figure. The accuracy of his crosses from the left was unreal, while the previously ordinary Emmerson Boyce suddenly turned into a source of assists and goals from the right. Even Moses delivered on the potential I’d highlighted earlier in the season, while Franco Di Santo started looking like a centre-forward. I’ve seen a rag-tag bunch of individuals pull off a similar footballing feat before – but that was in Escape to Victory. Even I will hesitate to compare Moses to Pele.

Martinez has managed to hold on to what he’s got and hasn’t upset the applecart with new signings that threaten to re-organise the tactics. A 3-4-3 looks set to remain but the question is – are other teams wise to the approach and ready to counter it? The meet with Chelsea is a classic opening day clash. Previously we’ve seen Wigan hit the day one headlines for the wrong reason but, if they can prove themselves against a Chelsea defence that has looked shaky in pre-season, then bandwagons will start rolling for their home fixtures with Stoke and Fulham. For me, Shaun Maloney looks cheap. If he stays fit he could be outstanding in the budget bracket. It’s a big “if” though.

Anorak says…
The traditional summer pursuit for Dave Whelan’s Wigan has them hawking around their star talent, their headline act that finished the season with such a bang. This so often leaves the Wigan manager to pick up the pieces and prepare the team for another year without their main man. This season’s patsy appears to be Victor Moses, with Chelsea lined up to pay the top dollar. However, even if Moses remains at the DW come September, the departure of midfield enforcer Momo Diamé to West Ham has already set the tone and thinned the squad. I fear Wigan and their conveyor belt of young prospects will have a fight on their hands again.

Granville says…
It seems that every season Wigan start on the back foot, having to re-adjust to the loss of a influential player. Last term it was Charles N’Zogbia, this close season they’ve already lost Momo Diame and Hugo Rodallega and if Chelsea get their way, Victor Moses is about to join the exodus. This all points to a tough start again, although having said that, last term they started with a win and a couple of draws. Initially their fixture list is rather mixed. They play Chelsea and United in the first five games, but either side they have home encounters against poor travellers, Fulham and Stoke. Much will depend on Di Santo and the pre-season free scoring, Mauro Boselli: Jean Beausejour will supply from the flanks, but can they really deliver the goals?

Andy says…
God only knows what Wigan offer us this season. Roberto Martinez managed to get Emmerson Boyce to score two Premier League goals in a game: that miracle alone surely tells us to expect the unexpected. A team with a strike force of the often inept Franco Di Santo, the anonymous Conor Sammon and a catatonic Hugo Rodallega, somehow survived and so it’s hard to question the man at the helm. With Mauro Boselli back in the ranks, Martinez has another source of “hidden” talent to work with. More than likely, though, relegation will finally beckon.

    Morning!

Just wondering: Why is almost NOBODY having players such as Gerrard, Suarez, Walcott, Cahill, Nani, Ba, walker, baines, vermalen.....?? I know some are risky here, but hey, so are some of the standard rmt-players...

Just because of fixtures, or is everyone in here just picking what they see on other RMT's?

If RVP moves to Man United, the interest in Kagawa in FPL will certainly cool... RVP will take the striker role up front and Rooney will play in the hole... This will push Kagawa to the wings if he does get to play some games...

Kagawa is most effective in the hole and I believe that it's not worth it if he is playing on the wings...

    What do you guys think?

              This...

The rest are really humps. Carroll has no real skill in places he´s been asked to play (and that would be outside of the box), but he doesn't look terrible...more like a Chamakh from Arsenal...almost useless once you know how he plays. But Downing is the shocking one tome. He really isn't that skilled beyond the use of his left foot. His dribbling skills are shockingly bad. And to me he is the problem; Carroll you know what you get, almost like a bigman in basketball that can't dribble...no big deal. But Downing is like Kobe Bryant, except he can't dribble, and can't shoot because he can't get close enough to get a sensible shot off.

    Hi all,
Just getting here. What's the consensus on where Allen fits in with Liverpool squad?

    A) Atop a 4-3-3 on one side of Suarez and opposite Cole? (and therefore relatively valuable)
    B) Lost in the muddle of two many midfielders (and therefore notsomuch)

Am I crazy to hope for A, given some "favorite son" status with Rogers?

I think the most common midfield lineup will be

      ––––––Lucas–––––
      Gerrard–––––Allen

with Henderson and Shelvey rotating with Gerrard and Allen.

      And yes you are 🙂

And if u want to dream about transfers.. Just imagine (both irl and fpl wise) if Dzeko joined Spurs... geeeeesh... perfect match imo, surely he could score 20-25 goals in a season (7.5 in FPL).

Yep definitely rate Dzeko higher as a player but if anyone knows how to put the ball in the net it's Berba. It's hard to compare the really with Berba in the twilight of his career and Dzeko with his best years ahead of him.

Its a gamble, he will be rotated with Senderos imo.. but from the start, considering preseason (Senderos injured) he should start.. so if u really need the .5 extra, do it.. but be prepared to transfer Hughes - Hangeland later on...

It is hard to consider him nailed on as Jol seems to occasionally like playing Senderos (which is strange as other than this Jol seems like a sensible sort of chap) but he is not a bad risk if the 0.5 will really help elsewhere

VDV is injury prone, plays more deep but scores goals out of the box like noone. Siggy on the other side is in the box, takes set pieces and AVB likes him ( he told me that yesterday at breakfast).

get .5 and have Bale instead... until I see Vdv injured i wont touch Siggy (even tho I rate him high). And I would really want to see Vdv and Siggy on the pitch at the same time, wouldnt be surprised if Vdv plays deeper (as in Holland) taking the "Modric role" when he leaves...

Anyone planning to go without Rooney at least first few weeks?
I was also set for torres => rooney gw2, but I'm just not sure anymore if he's worth the hazzle.
What I hear, he's fat and not sharp atm. IF Rvp comes in, Fergie might give him a little lesson...

    Altough it allows me this midfield, maybe it's not so good idea either;
Lamp / Bale / McClean / Pienaar / Michu - too much of a benching headache?

Aguero / Torres / Graham is my forwardline.

I saw them against Barca, and Rooney is unfit tbh.. okey, maybe hes not fat fat.. but unfit.. Cant see him being 100% in form from the start of the season. BUT, its Rooney.. hes a great player, he could score a few even if he is fat.. 🙂
The Torres - Rooney makes more sence to me now tho, u could easily follow thru and bring him in gw 2 if he looks good against Everton, or wait..

I don't like Rooney's points potential with RVP in the same team, which lots of alleged ITK's now seem certain is going to happen. RVP himself may be too much for me as well.

More and more I am warming to the idea of Jelavic instead. Equally capable of getting 15+ goals this season too. Pairing him with someone like Bent or P Cissé and Aguero could actually be just as profitable.

Predicting City and Chelsea's starting XI for Sunday:

    City:
    Hart
    Zabaletta Kompany Toure Lescott Kolarov
    De Jong Yaya Nasri
    Tevez Aguero

    Chelsea:
    Cech
    Ivanovic Terry Cahill Cashley
    Mikel Lampard
    Ramires Mata Hazrd
    Torres

God I hope you've got the Chelsea lineup wrong - really do not want to see Mikel starting many (or in fact any) games this season. Having said that at the moment I don't know who else could start there - especially if Meireles is off as is being reported

i'd understand de jong dropping into the back 3 in place of kolo, but playing de jong in front of a back 3 half-defeats the object of *having* a back 3. :/ if they don't have anyone else to play there then they shouldn't be using that formation.

eThis. The third CB essentially negates the need for a DM. The midfield 3 would surely be more like Silva-Yaya-Nasri.

He scored against some good teams last season from memory, and ran rings around United the season before (although his finishing yet again let him down)
IF he can find his finishing boots he is fixture proof. But that is a massive if.

After watching Liverpool last night I am seriously tempted by one of their attackers (Suarez, Borini, Gerrard)
I know they werent playing a great team, and I know the fixtures look poor, but it's not as if they won't score.
With Allen coming in they will keep plenty of possession and create heaps of chances. Borini for me is a tempter at 8.0. Like Sigurdsson, Rodgers seems to know how to use him well (had a decent record in limited time for Swansea) and last night showed Suarez will be doing a lot of the dirty work for him.
    Food for thought anyway.

With the right support Suarez is gonna have a fantastic season. And I have a feeling he might be immune to fixtures in a RVP sorta way. If they can keep Agger and get in Dempsey for Adam+Cash the team looks solid and should be in for a decent season

Im tempted to go with Tevez - Jelavic - Suarez tbh, just hate the fact that I wont have any of the top captains this year (possibly)..
