In the second of our “Burning Question” articles our contributors attempt the seemingly impossible; to predict the form of Wigan, arguably the most unpredictable team in Premier League history.

Take last season’s exploits, for example. At the end of October 2011, Wigan’s future as a top-flight team looked bleak as they sat bottom of the table, licking their wounds after six successive defeats. By the end of January they were four points adrift of the pack and seemingly down and out but, to Roberto Martinez’s credit, the Latics ushered in one of the top-flight’s greatest ever spring cleans. From March to May the Lancashire outfit notched up seven precious victories and claimed the scalps of some of the Premier League’s biggest names. The 2-1 victory away to Liverpool on March 24 was just the start as, incredibly, Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle all succumbed to a rejuvenated Wigan.

The key reason for the change was a shift in formation, using Emerson Boyce and Jean Beausejour as wingbacks in a 3-4-3 in attack that reverted to a 5-4-1 when in defence. This tactic relied heavily on the engines of Boyce and Beausejour and both duly delivered with gutsy and creative displays. Whether they are able to continue their fine form down the flanks this coming season will be crucial to the Latics’ success, as will be the goal scoring form of Franco di Santo, the most likely contender to spearhead the three-pronged attack alongside Shaun Maloney and Chelsea target Victor Moses. The early fixture list has also been reasonably kind (CHE, sot, STO, mun, FUL, sun) with only a couple of giants looming on the horizon for Wigan to bring down to size.

Mark says…
I’d really like to think that they can hit the ground running. Their incredible end of season form, defying the fixture list, was one of my highlights of last season. At one point, with Victor Moses conspiring to ensure I was ridiculed on every turn, I said some rather harsh things about Wigan in the ScoutCast – Granville will remember them well. I went home and felt so awful, I edited my rant before we published. That’s how much I admire Martinez – I’ll happily edit the ScoutCast to be sure not to upset him.

Last season was a pure victory for the likeable Spaniard and his defiant belief in a tactical system and the players he had available to implement it. While he barely registered on the Fantasy richter scale, Jean Beausejour turned out to be a key figure. The accuracy of his crosses from the left was unreal, while the previously ordinary Emmerson Boyce suddenly turned into a source of assists and goals from the right. Even Moses delivered on the potential I’d highlighted earlier in the season, while Franco Di Santo started looking like a centre-forward. I’ve seen a rag-tag bunch of individuals pull off a similar footballing feat before – but that was in Escape to Victory. Even I will hesitate to compare Moses to Pele.

Martinez has managed to hold on to what he’s got and hasn’t upset the applecart with new signings that threaten to re-organise the tactics. A 3-4-3 looks set to remain but the question is – are other teams wise to the approach and ready to counter it? The meet with Chelsea is a classic opening day clash. Previously we’ve seen Wigan hit the day one headlines for the wrong reason but, if they can prove themselves against a Chelsea defence that has looked shaky in pre-season, then bandwagons will start rolling for their home fixtures with Stoke and Fulham. For me, Shaun Maloney looks cheap. If he stays fit he could be outstanding in the budget bracket. It’s a big “if” though.

Anorak says…
The traditional summer pursuit for Dave Whelan’s Wigan has them hawking around their star talent, their headline act that finished the season with such a bang. This so often leaves the Wigan manager to pick up the pieces and prepare the team for another year without their main man. This season’s patsy appears to be Victor Moses, with Chelsea lined up to pay the top dollar. However, even if Moses remains at the DW come September, the departure of midfield enforcer Momo Diamé to West Ham has already set the tone and thinned the squad. I fear Wigan and their conveyor belt of young prospects will have a fight on their hands again.

Granville says…
It seems that every season Wigan start on the back foot, having to re-adjust to the loss of a influential player. Last term it was Charles N’Zogbia, this close season they’ve already lost Momo Diame and Hugo Rodallega and if Chelsea get their way, Victor Moses is about to join the exodus. This all points to a tough start again, although having said that, last term they started with a win and a couple of draws. Initially their fixture list is rather mixed. They play Chelsea and United in the first five games, but either side they have home encounters against poor travellers, Fulham and Stoke. Much will depend on Di Santo and the pre-season free scoring, Mauro Boselli: Jean Beausejour will supply from the flanks, but can they really deliver the goals?

Andy says…
God only knows what Wigan offer us this season. Roberto Martinez managed to get Emmerson Boyce to score two Premier League goals in a game: that miracle alone surely tells us to expect the unexpected. A team with a strike force of the often inept Franco Di Santo, the anonymous Conor Sammon and a catatonic Hugo Rodallega, somehow survived and so it’s hard to question the man at the helm. With Mauro Boselli back in the ranks, Martinez has another source of “hidden” talent to work with. More than likely, though, relegation will finally beckon.

Pretty much the same as starting with 2M and ditching Torres.
At least the 3M gives you the option to ditch either.

It's tempting, but then Tevez has a great GW3 fixture so I'd probably want him back for that. You reckon it's essential to have Rooney in from GW2? Alternative could be McCartney -> Terry and then in GW3 Lamps & Torres -> either Rooney & Pienaar or just Lamps -> one of the MUN mids (Kagawa/Nani/Val) if Rooney doesn't look great early on.

I thought it was, but that was before I saw him pre-season.
He is looking polar opposite of last season, very sluggish and fat ha. I think I might go without and get a midfielder for the fixtures. Plenty of cheaper options up front.

    Pienaar or Jelavic

No doubt he's a great goal scorer, but his 13m is based on being a player in a top 4 team whom almost all goals go through. I'm not convinced a 12m and a 13m striker can score enough points playing together to justify those prices. Just my opinion of course, might find I'm wild carding in GW3!!!

Definitely won't be starting with him - if he moves we need time to to see how he slots in, if he stays/is still at Arsenal, what's to say Wenger won't start him on the bench as he sees him as unsettling? Obviously if it's apparent that he is staying at Arse then that changes everything. Things will be a lot clearer by deadline as a week is a long time in football!

Am I the only person considering Koscielny? I know we have a reputation for being rubbish at the back, but I think the Verm/Kos partnership is a good one, and if both are playing I can see us getting more CSs than the likes of Fulham for example (and Hangelaand is very popular on here for only 0.5m less....). Also think Kos offers a decent attacking threat for a CB too.

The Tevez Aguero question is haunting me. For that extra 2.5 you can not only have a super striker, but you can upgrade a weaker midfield and a 4.0 defended......

It could make a real diffrence........any thoughts?

Imo, from what I have seen in videos, stats and games.. he will be excellent in Arsenal.. His passing is really really good, got a great vision of the game. The front 3 will benefit a lot from him, well worth the 9.0. He might need some time to settle in, but people was thinking the same about Mata last year...

It was only Mickey Mouse opposition yesterday but he had a stormer, he's starting to hit form. Downgraded Torres for him and upgraded Bale to Silva. Might regret it but also might change before tomorrow week. At one stage I changed for Pienaar for Allen so it could be worse!

Front 3 - and is Cole in because you think Chelsea will get 2 cleanies in the DGW? I don't think they will - on average under RDM last season Chelsea conceded a goal a game and only had 6 cleanies from 21 games - 2 of those in cup comps

Clean sheet away to Wigan, not at home to Reading. Cole is good for assists and BPs and nailed on. Terry is the only other nailed on and too pricy. Forget last season, Chelsea defence is more than decent.

As there is so much up in the air this year with regards to starting X1s, I am thinking of filling my team with 3 Reading and 3 Chelsea players for gameweek 1, seeing what happens then using my wildcard after the 1st gameweek. After the 1st Gameweek, questions like will Hazzard play through the middle, does Kagawa start or look any good, will Sorenson or Begovic start in goal should be answered.
Therefore my team for Gameweek 1 is:
    Federici
    Fabio - Lescott - Koscielny
    McAnuff - Silva - Lampard - Mata
    Torres - Pogrebnyak - Aguero

Is anyone else thinking of this?
Appreciate any feedback and this is still only a thought!

Fair comments Mr Blue. I will not get all my answers, but there are a few benefits:
1 - Should get off to a flying start with 6 players playing twice.
2 - Managers will starting with their strgonest X1s gameweek one (barring injuries) so I will be able to select my team Gameweek 2 dependant on this.
3 - 3 out of the last 4 years I have used my Wildcard within the first few weeks anyway, so this time I am just making sure I get an extra benefit before doing the inevitable!

fair enough I guess.. I just hate to use a wc that early.
          and well, to answer..
          1. Will u have a much worse start if you only go for 3 Chelsea players + 1 Reading? 2 transfers until gw3 will still give u a good team if u plan it well.
          2. Sure they will start with their strongest players, but I dont think u will get a lot of answers regarding their form and position, could be changes (very likely diff formations in home/away games as an example).
          3. I used my wc gw 5-6 lsat year, I regret it right after I did it and even more during the whole season.. early wc is a big NO NO for me..

Mr Blue, your comments are very very valid.
I hate using my Wildcard so early, but am a comulsive tinkerer!
However, I am definately going to have a long think about point 1 you raised above. Planning on keeping Federici as my goal keeper anyway, so could start with 3 Chelsea players and just use transfers to transfer them out.. I do think that we will learn lots Gameweek 1 though..

If you are willing to gamble your WC away I would rather gamble and pick say 3 Chel defenders. Upside is potentially 36 points between the 3 . All or nothing. I don't see the point of getting 3 Reading players.

While you are at it get Kompany in there as well instead of Silva(who might not play the first game)

    Friedel / Federici
    Cole / Kolarov / Rangel / Hughes / Cuellar

i'd rather wait and see if agger signs first. if he does then who do you go with? lescott is surely going to see less minutes as a result, and pretty much every other player has rotation hanging over their head. that only leaves kompany - too much at 7.5 and hart - too much for a keeper at 7

unfortunately it seems m that there will be no cheap-ish way into the city defence this season, so I’d rather invest in them upfront

I haven't really tinkered yet, but that's what I plan (I may well chicken out). I reckon there's damn good value (and damn good goal scorers) for quite a bit cheaper.

i totally agree with you, but those two have great potential. thinking i'll go with one of rooney/kun and one of the 8.5-9.5, of which there are ALOT.

but i must admit going with neither rooney or kun does wonders for ther rest of the team

For the opening 6-10 fixtures, which pair would you choose?

    A) Graham & Pieenar
    B) Petric & Pieenar
    C) Graham & McClean
    D) Petric & McClean

    Thanks!
