Steve Clarke has hinted he expects to utilise various options up front this season for West Brom. Alex Kacaniklic is determined to win a starting role for Fulham, Craig Gardner may be shifted to defence for Sunderland’s trip to Arsenal, while Matt Lowton has declared himself fit for Villa’s curtain raiser at Upton Park…

New West Brom boss Steve Clarke has revealed there may well be plenty of rotation and tactical alterations with his frontline over the season ahead. Talking to the club’s official website, the Scot revealed his plans:

“In the modern game you have to be adaptable, flexible, and able to play in different positions. I think, with the forward options we have, that’s there. There are a lot of good players fighting for those places, whether we go with two strikers or three is up for debate, and will depend on certain games and the opposition.”

The Baggies boss has rolled out 4-4-2, 4-4-1-1 and 4-3-3 formations in recent games and is clearly prepared to juggle his options – a situation which could well frustrate Fantasy managers. Peter Odemwingie has featured mainly on the right in the latter system but ideally we’d want him through the middle in order to excel as a Fantasy force and come close to that 15 goal debut haul back in 2010/11. Although the Nigerian’s versatility may see him play less centrally, it may well boost his game time under the new manager, however.

While the likes of Zoltan Gera has found a role in “the hole” on occasion and new signing Yassine El Ghanassy has even been handed set-pieces when on the pitch, Clarke has since added further attacking options – Romelu Lukaku and Markus Rosenberg have both arrived a little too late to feature in pre-season, meaning we are unlikely to get a better picture of Clarke’s intentions until a few games into the season.

Craig Gardner revealed he is ready to fill in at right-back for Sunderland’s match at Arsenal this weekend after Phil Bardsley was sidelined with an ankle operation. The midfielder has mainly featured behind the striker during pre-season due to Stephane Sessegnon’s absence but, having made no impact in an attacking role, was moved to defence for the final game of pre-season. With question marks over Wes Brown’s availability, Martin O’Neill could decide to give Gardner the nod over John O’Shea and Carlos Cuellar for the full-back role, with the latter two likelier to feature at centre-half or left-back, should Kieran Richardson be fielded behind the lone striker. Gardner is set for a tough time if called upon, however, with Arsene Wenger possibly fielding Lukas Podolski on the Arsenal left; the German marked his debut in the Gunners’ final pre-season match with a double and arrives in fine form.

Alex Kacaniklic is determined to nail down a regular role on the Fulham left flank this season. The Swede has come under the radar of many Fantasy managers due to his cut-price potential across the Fantasy games and has impressed when handed game time in recent matches. It’s uncertain, however, as to quite how Martin Jol views the situation; Kacaniklic started in a 4-4-1-1 in Fulham’s last pre-season match but was subbed off when Jol opted for a 4-4-2, with Hugo Rodallega joining Mladen Petric up front. With Clint Dempsey’s future still up in the air, it may well be that Damian Duff and Bryan Ruiz are in the driving seat for the wide berths when the Cottagers field a front two; Jol even admitted Rodallega has potential there upon the Colombian’s arrival, suggesting Kacaniklic is far from certain to get his wish.

Matt Lowton has handed Paul Lambert a boost by declaring himself fit and available for Villa’s opener at West Ham on Saturday.

“I took a knock in training on Friday so the manager said just as a precaution to sit that one out. But I’m back in training now so everything’s fine. It was my ankle and it just had a bit of swelling on it, but I just sat it out so it didn’t get any worse. I’m definitely excited ahead of Saturday and it will be great, if selected.”

The summer signing from Sheffield United missed the club’s final pre-season match but impressed when handed a starting role over the summer, even finding the net against Portland Timbers in late July. Eric Lichaj stepped in as Lowton’s replacement but the latter’s recovery gives Lambert a quandary ahead of the Upton Park showdown – Lichaj, however, may vie with Enda Stevens for the left-back slot, with Stephen Warnock seemingly out of the picture in the new regime. Defensively, Villa have been rather unimpressive in recent matches; eight goals conceded in their last four suggests Lambert’s propensity for attacking football – which caused Norwich’s backline to ship 66 goals last term – could see the midlands outfit struggle to register many clean sheets. There are clear budget options in Lambert’s rearguard but Fantasy managers will be looking to see if Lambert’s attacking football will come at a cost at the back.

    Howdy folks...long time...

Been in the shadows for the better part of the build-up to the season...read all the reasoning related to players and such...was curious...as much as we'd all like to think we will hold on to our wildcards for long, knowing that most of us end up using it really early in the season, would it not be more beneficial to use up the saved 2 or 2.5 on the team?

My wife put together an interesting team last night using up all her budget and, without tactics, seems to have a pretty decent team in terms of depth. Conversations here have noted that squad depth, with rotation policies driving a lot of squads now, may be a key factor this season...

So question is...would it be a wiser move to try setup the strongest possible squad with all the budget and hope for solid selections and if worse comes to worse, wildcard to correct it? I just know form last seasons debacle that all pre-season planning could go south really quickly and perhaps a change in tactic is better.

Her squad is set up as such:

    Vorm, Krul
    BAE, Olsson, Boyce, Hange, Clark
    Bale, Silva, McClean, Pienaar, Guthrie
    Aguero, Podolski, Petric

Yes...2 or 3 are options I threw out there for her but the bulk is what she chose...clearly she's not thinking how we do but could there be some method to the madness?

What do you guys reckon about the option of using up the entire budget rather than planning for something we can't predict?

No I did but she, being an Arsenal supporter or sorts, dropped lip quite fast after I told her that her first player in (RVP) was moving to a club she doesn't really dig much...she may tinker but I suspect she'll leave it as such...

To me you need captaincy options. From that team you can captain Aguero and maybe Bale. The idea of having Torres with money in the bank for GW2 for Rooney/RVP is that it gives you another captaincy option.

I see using the whole budget a bit restraining. Will usually mean hits early doors. Obviously we are going to make mistakes with picking 15 players, having a bit left back makes the flexibility of who needs changed first, easier.

I have 2M in the bank currently and my team is well balanced, I could have 4.5M if I get in Ramires for Mata, which is undecided yet! That team looks based on last seasons performances, the defence especially! I dont think Swansea will maintain the defense from last season, nor newcastle. BAE is a risk, spurs need time to settle down with AVB. Silva not fully fit yet, Bale is an okay choice, yet maybe VDV is better if spurs fail to get Adebayor. Podolski is a good player but not proven, I would wait to see if he can prove himself and take a punt on Tevez instead! Petric had a good preseason, I cant fault him at the minute! I dont really see where all your money has gone really, I just think when you buy your good players you are buying the clubs most expensive, when there are perfectly good slightly cheaper options avaliable, e.g Silva, you could have Yaya for 2.0M less, good preseason, playing further up, nailed on etc etc

@Look It's a Badger: This is my wife's team...not sure she's really too phased about who can perform and captaincy and such...

My point was really a question as to how much better could your team be if you used up that saved amount...so really, could you shape a better team if you used the saved amount.

..usually saved amounts were in the region of 0.5 or 1M...not 2M like this season...(for the Rooney move)...

Okay everyone, Mata or Ramires? I can afford both with money in the bank still and the rest of my team is very nicely balanced, but i feel an extra 2.5M from Ramires will really help elsewhere! Is Ramires nailed on, for the first 2 matches at least?

Who reckons Yaya is a better pick than Lampard/Ramires? I already have Torres for GW1 with cash in the bank and will probably do one of Yaya > United mid or Torres > Rooney.

I don't want 2 Chelsea attackers as it just means another headache when they get to the blank in GW3.

I also don't want to start with a United attacker and want to leave my options open and get one in in GW2.

I could always go for someone like McClean instead of Yaya but I like City's fixtures and Yaya is surely the most nailed on player in the whole team!

You just convinced me to ditch Yaya! I'm not going anywhere near the Chelsea midfield though so plumped for Cazorla...

good idea or Arteta just as good bet for cheaper?

no aguero is most nailed on player in team.

He is v expensive for a guy that plays as dm for 75minutes every game

would rather have another man city att and get lamps as coverage

nasri for the punt... or kolarov as an even bigger punt.. will be interesting to see if he plays the same role he did in the CS. PLENTY of time in the attacking third.

Could be dangerous! I'm on Torres at the moment. Don't trust Tevez enough and A Cole is hardly an inspiring choice. Not willing to take the risk on Ivanovic as I think RDM will sign a RB before too long and that's another transfer I'll be forced into.

Having looked at the members area and this years projections i am going to against my guy and go for McClean over Larsson. McClean has a lower ownership too which decreases his likelihood of dropping in value. I hope it doesnt bite me.

I'm startign to get itchy feet over McClean. The abject lack of strikers is really worrying me, and 1 good fixture over the first 4 weeks isn't great. I'm currently looking at Puncheon for 2 m less and just play Noble more....!
