Sunday Dugout Discussion – Gameweek 1

We were treated to goals and clean sheets aplenty in yesterday’s season opener but, for most fantasy managers, today holds higher hopes for a points bonanza. The Dugout Discussion opens as both the champions of England and the champions of Europe take to the stage. The former host Premier League new boys Southampton at 4pm, which is straight after Chelsea’s trip to Wigan. The team news from the DW Stadium is in…

Wigan XI: Al-Habsi, Caldwell, Alcaraz, Ramis, Boyce, Figueroa, McArthur, McCarthy, Moses, Maloney, Di Santo.

Chelsea XI: Cech, Ivanovic, David Luiz, Terry, Cole, Lampard, Mikel, Hazard, Mata, Bertrand, Torres.

Kicking-off his side’s double Gameweek, Roberto Di Matteo is forced to leave out Ramires due to illness, giving Ryan Bertrand an out-of-position start. The rest is as expected, with David Luiz getting the nod ahead of Gary Cahill, and Eden Hazard handed a league debut.

As for the home side, Roberto Martinez can call upon the services of James McArthur after the Scottish midfielder recovered from a knee injury. Elsewhere, Jean Beausejour misses out with Antolin Alcaraz starting in defence. That will likely see Maynor Figueroa pushed up into midfield if Martinez sticks to his 3-4-3 formation.

The Dugout Discussion will remain open until the dust has settled from the game at the Etihad, and can be accessed right here.

Talked out of so many gut picks by the group think on here...

Had Petric in my team (hence the grav!) until talked out of it eventually
Had Ivanovic for his greater attacking threat until eventually won over by everyone with Cole and talk of new right backs
Got Torres (c) after promising myself "never again" after two (c) fails in a row last season
Convinced myself Ramires was a good 1 week punt - although no one could have predicted he would get ill

Oh well, its my own fault!

Wouldn't mind seeing a bit more fluidity in Wigan's front 3, they don't move when the 2 cm's have the ball, Di Santo should come out and try let a winger in behind, instead they just go wide and end up having a cross cleared or relying on Moses to do something.

Agreed, it's too predictable and for all their possession they aren't really creating chances apart from one of their several crosses finding Di Santo and one arising from a break from a Chelsea mistake.

Worst thing RDM can do is park the bus now. It's giving Wigan too much possession and chances. Just play on as normal and Torres should bang in one

Mata looks tired, Torres looks like Torres, Bertrand is not an attacker. Even if they want to they can't attack atm

If Maloney had as much technique as Moses or McCarthy, they would have a goal, imo.

RIGHT. I am off on a 45min cycle to work.

When I get back, there'd better be a Torres hat-trick, Mata 3x assists.

Or else I'll 'never ever ever pick Torres again'. I really really mean it this time.

My pre-season decision was between Lampard and Ivanovic for the DGW. Went Lampard... can't be too disappointed really.

The only definite of the 3 was Torres, who also has my captains armband. Uhm. ( 🙁 )

Umm... I did squeeze the budget to upgrade Lampard to Mata. It seems like I might choose the wrong route into Chelsea minefield. Hope Mata plays at least 60mins and get CS point. If lucky, a goal or assist would be nice.
