It’s the first Monday Night Football installment of the season, and we’re at Goodison Park to see Everton host Manchester United. The build-up to this game has surrounded around the arrival of Robin van Persie at Manchester United, and how he would feature this evening. The Dugout Discussion is open and the eagerly anticipated team news is in…

Everton XI: Howard, Hibbert, Baines, Distin, Jagielka, Neville, Osman, Fellaini, Pienaar, Gibson, Jelavic.

Man United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Vidic, Carrick, Evra, Cleverley, Kagawa, Scholes, Nani, Welbeck, Rooney.

Sir Alex Ferguson chooses to start just one of his two major signings, and it’s the Japanese playmaker Shinji Kagawa that makes his United debut. It’s a makeshift defence with Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick filling the gaps. Robin van Persie starts on the bench.

As for the hosts, David Moyes names a familiar looking side, leaving new signing Steven Naismith on the bench.

Follow all the action as it unfolds in our Dugout Discussion chatroom, which is open and can be accessed right here.

I wonder does Pienaar have any chance of bps in a game dominated by Fellaini & Everton back four? I think he had 2 shots on target and 2 off..

of course nani was shit like usual and welbeck isn't good enough either, but to me more than anything else this just proved what most utd fans have been saying for years; our central midfield is really, really poor when pressed, regardless of personnel.

kagawa looks great though, on the plus side 🙂

So true. We really need a central mid. Kagawa was great as the creative/attacking mid. but we are still lacking a decent more defensive minded midfielder.

A central midfielder would have made much more sense than RVP. United have a pretty decent attack but still an embarrassing midfield. Still playing the total liability which is Scholes is shocking, they need to spend some money on a proper defensive midfielder.

Caution about the potential Fellaini love, good as he is, there will be games where he's deeper and Naismith/mirrelas and Jelly both play, they were always going to shove him up top against United.

    Federici - De Gea
    Clichy - Demel - Clyne - Ivanovic - Hughes
    Bale - Mata - N'zogbia - Pienaar - Maloney
    Aguero - Graham - Torres

    0m in the bank

    A.) Sell N'Zogbia for Michu (0.1 short)
    B.) Sell Aguero for Tevez
    C.) Sell Graham for Petric
D.) Sit tight till next week when 2 transfers are available (what could I do then?)

Please rank these ideas from Best --> Worst.

Kagawa. Actually looked a class above his United team mates in terms of accepting the ball into feet under pressure and bringing others into the game. Rooney was looking for him every time he got on the ball towards the end of the game.

Why was Welbeck played out left?! That's just harsh on Welbeck. I can see Rooney playing out there against Fulham with Kagawa playing in behind RVP. It will help Rooney see more of the a ball too.

Nani. I haven't got any words for performance. Even is own team mates don't appear to respect him.

It seems you don't appreciate a certain ilk of players, you're not along though. Kagawa and de Gea were United's two best players, Kagawa didn't give the ball away and always looked to bring his team-mates into the game. He and Rooney look like linking up well, although that will be more clear at home.

Kagawa played most balls simply but hardly ever gave the ball away. Slotted in a few through balls that should have got assists as well as laying one on for Scholes. His movement off the ball was excellent too. Just wished he was greedier and take on shots himself.

Well, massively let down by that match. Kagawa was brilliant (justifying my utter love for him 😉 ) but it was really very grim. DDG played well, Evra was a concern, Nani was awful, Rooney was out of shape and really didn't look bothered at all. Essentially, Kagawa was really sharp but no point having him if the rest of the team stay asleep.

No no, I have him already. Thought he would start for sure. But with Gallas captain think he will dethrone Kaboul??

I never realised Gallas was made captain so i got him for Tottenham's set of fixtures coming up..

I don't think Gallas or anyone named full time captain yet. Vert played full 90 in friendly this week so I hope he was just being rested.

If you have no other transfers going on switch him to BAE or Walker for a week or two til it's more clear.

If I've taken A Cole out and put Jenkinson in to make Michu my 5th midfielder does that make me a bad person? Also, happy with tonight's result... as it continues my shite 1st week score. Hopefully captain Torres will put the tin hat on it. Why did we fall for that one?

why oh why jenkinson. 🙁 tough fixtures and wont be in the team long anyway. At 5.0 could've gone for much better options.

That was my thought process. I just thought as a short term punt it was worth it to release a bit of cash. If he doesn't play I'd hav Cuellar on the bench. On another note I am trying to get an avatar, but no matter what I put into gravatar as a username it says it's unavailable. ?? Any ideas.

Getting serious now, while Fellaini looked really good in the hole tonight it's next to impossible to see him there long-term with Naismith playing there instead. Might steer clear of the Everton midfield to be honest, meaning Pienaar, there's no one to dominate the points.

Jelavic will be more apparent when Fellaini drops back. Him or Baines is enough Everton.

Will be bringing one in the next two weeks

Yep, good point. Baines on the radar for me, but Everton have 2 away games next so may be a bit of time to see whether Moyes changes it at all.

He's always been an absolute beast, but that's limited him as he's usually played DM. Now Cahill's gone if he plays up top often he'll be a handle for any player. Is he like 6'4/5"?

If Arsenal struggle for goals there could be a huge battle for 4th with Newcastle, Tottenham and maybe Everton if they avoid injuries to their first XI as they have a small squad
