Marouanne Fellaini towers above the United defence to earn three points for Everton as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are shackled, with Robin Van Persie reduced to a cameo role. Here’s the stock check following the Goodison clash…

On The Up

Marouanne Fellaini
Pushed up in support of Nikaca Jelavic, the big Belgian was imperious and led the line with strength and composure. It’s not clear if David Moyes will persist with Fellaini in the role, with Steven Naismith and new signing Kevin Mirallas, the Everton boss clearly has options. However, this promises to be a big season for Fellaini and at 6.5 in the FPL and 4.7 in the Sky Sports Game, Fantasy managers may well be rethinking Steven Pienaar as the protagonist in Everton’s midfield ranks.

The Everton Defence
Moyes’ rearguard was defiant throughout and magnificent to a man. Leighton Baines delivered his first clean sheet of the season – he remains the luxury item in the Toffees back four but, on this form, a strong haul of clean sheets over the season could be in the offing to help justify the outlay.

David De Gea
While United struggled in attacking terms, De Gea stood firm against a first half blue tide, pulling off notable saves to keep the score deadlocked at the interval. With Anders Lindegaard breathing down his neck, the Spaniard has to produce. Tonight he was arguably United’s most impressive performer – he had to be.

Going Down

Wayne Rooney
Rooney was the danger man for United but Sir Alex Ferguson’s attacking players were far from potent. While they dominated possession and passed the ball well, they lacked a cutting edge and a direct threat. Rooney’s owners will go into the weekend clash with Fulham concerned that Robin Van Persie will be called upon to provide that, while Rooney retreats deep.

United’s Widemen
Ferguson appeared to allow his attacking players fluidity with Shinji Kawaga and Rooney interchanging up front or drifting deep to pick up the ball. The uncertainty surrounding Kawaga’s role and the likelihood of a Rooney/Van Persie pairing will cause concern. It appears we could see Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Kawaga competing for two starts in wide areas throughout the season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

How did Kagawa fair tonight, look like nailing down a spot?

Have to say tonight's result has pleased me, not for any other reason that it has saved my a 4pt hit and I now have 2m on change rattling around in the bank.

Was United's MOTM for the outfield (De Gea overall for me). Didn't put a foot wrong, linked play very well, great in tight areas, set up a couple of goal scoring chances and almost scored himself at one point.

The only thing is what formation will SAF play at home? Hard to not have Kagawa after tonight's performance though, looks like a very good signing and odds on for goals, assists and bonus points. Transferred him in for that reason.

Tough question. I'm tempted for both. I've gone for Kagawa for now though, with FULHAM Southampton WIGAN his next three games, and Stoke, Liverpool and SOUTHAMPTON for Cazorla. Only thing is whether Kagawa will start, but after today's performance he'd be very hard done by not to.

I think the captaincy options fortjis year are becoming harder to find... Last year rooney, rvp, & aguero were pretty safe choices... Definitely looksharder to select a "safe" captain at the minute. If laps can nail down a starting slot he'll be as good a choice as anyone

Too early for Wildcard for me despite the above, I'd go with:

      Cech (Ruddy)
      Rafael, Kaboul, Zabaleta
VDV (c) Lampard Britton Allen (Guthrie)
      Torres Tevez DEFOE

With a possible change of Rafael out, if you're willing to take the 4 point hit. You never know though, he may start next game.

Putting in Defoe as Fredheim_Holm suggested could help with upgrading Stevens...

...although not the result i had hoped for (Carrick and Valencia in midfield next time Fergie..!!), I do hold out hope that RVP must start next game from the off, as 3 points against Fulham become crucial. Clearly we are not going to see Utd fly out of the barriers like last year, more a traditional start from the lads.

because of this, i will be keeping RVP in my side for now, and see what kind of response comes at Old Trafford....

Rafael should come back and be a decent choice from now on I reckon. There's nothing wrong in itself with Valencia as a makeshift right back, but it's a bleeding waste to not have him on the wing. After Nani's performance tonight Valencia should be back there pinging the crosses in, letting Rafael soak up some points at 5.5m.

    Ah.
