Marouanne Fellaini towers above the United defence to earn three points for Everton as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are shackled, with Robin Van Persie reduced to a cameo role. Here’s the stock check following the Goodison clash…

On The Up

Marouanne Fellaini
Pushed up in support of Nikaca Jelavic, the big Belgian was imperious and led the line with strength and composure. It’s not clear if David Moyes will persist with Fellaini in the role, with Steven Naismith and new signing Kevin Mirallas, the Everton boss clearly has options. However, this promises to be a big season for Fellaini and at 6.5 in the FPL and 4.7 in the Sky Sports Game, Fantasy managers may well be rethinking Steven Pienaar as the protagonist in Everton’s midfield ranks.

The Everton Defence
Moyes’ rearguard was defiant throughout and magnificent to a man. Leighton Baines delivered his first clean sheet of the season – he remains the luxury item in the Toffees back four but, on this form, a strong haul of clean sheets over the season could be in the offing to help justify the outlay.

David De Gea
While United struggled in attacking terms, De Gea stood firm against a first half blue tide, pulling off notable saves to keep the score deadlocked at the interval. With Anders Lindegaard breathing down his neck, the Spaniard has to produce. Tonight he was arguably United’s most impressive performer – he had to be.

Going Down

Wayne Rooney
Rooney was the danger man for United but Sir Alex Ferguson’s attacking players were far from potent. While they dominated possession and passed the ball well, they lacked a cutting edge and a direct threat. Rooney’s owners will go into the weekend clash with Fulham concerned that Robin Van Persie will be called upon to provide that, while Rooney retreats deep.

United’s Widemen
Ferguson appeared to allow his attacking players fluidity with Shinji Kawaga and Rooney interchanging up front or drifting deep to pick up the ball. The uncertainty surrounding Kawaga’s role and the likelihood of a Rooney/Van Persie pairing will cause concern. It appears we could see Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Kawaga competing for two starts in wide areas throughout the season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Team in a bit of a mess..
    Mignolet (Federici)
    Rafael(?) Zabaleta Clyne (Hangeland Gorkss)
    Bale Cazorla Lampard Ramires (Noble)
    Tevez Graham Aguero(!)

Don't mind stickin it out with Rafael. Aguero however is another thing. The tweet says "Outside chance vs QPR". It bein QPR i doubt he'll play. So he has to go. Can't think of any striker i want atm.. but thinkin of takin a 3 week punt on Rooney/RVP.. so

    A) Ramires and Aguero to Dyer and RVP (No cash in the bank so gotta do it tonight)
    B) Ramires and Aguero to Pienaar/Mclean and Rooney
    C) Lampard and Aguero to Pienaar/Mclean/Michu and RVP
    D) Lampard and Aguero to Kagawa/Nasri and Rooney

Which option looks best? i'm honestly stumped

Why a mess? You could downgrade a Chelsea mid this week or next ahead of their blank week, and could play 4-4-2, 4-3-3 and keep The Aga until after the international break. Or just get rid of Aguero - can't see him being risked against QPR with a two-week break for internationals straight after. Mankini would be mad to do that

Everyone seems to be assuming that RVP will be uptop for United with Rooney in a more withdrawn role. I don't think it's as clear cut as that. Both players can and have played both of those positions. I wouldn't be surprised to see RVP cutting in from the left of a front 3 at times. Also, i think it will be a lot more fluid than 1 main man up front. I think you will see interchanging of positions during the game between Rooney, RVP, Kagawa

RVP to have an average position that's furthest forward with plenty of horizontal movement into the corners - and more assists than expected - see his cutback for Kagawa on a plate last night as evidence.

The problem with United these days is that they're built for the possession game but when it comes to a tough fixture where they need to dig in and scrap to compete they aren't very good at it the way they used to be. The midfield needs to be a balance of passing players and strong competitive ones who can win tackles and compete aerially.

I know Everton away is a particularly tough fixture and a physical one but United came up short when it counted at the Etihad and the DW when they were up against it. They need an enforcer in the middle of the park because in Carrick, Cleverly, Scholes and Kagawa they have too much of the same type of midfielder.

Nani and Evra need to be sold imo. They are not getting any better, worse if anything and the standards have dropped way below what is good enough to play for United.

Anyone seriously considering going into GW2 without united cover? RVP could well play behind Rooney, and vice versa, does that mean kagawa drops deeper? Too many questions at the moment, only thing Im really afraid of is that MU go apeshit against Fulham and I miss out on a big haul, but guessing who would bring in the haul(similar to the Hazard/mata/lamps debate) is driving me nuts.

Im thinking to make my only transfer

If I get one it'll be RVP. Rooney away is not so great. If RVP can gel with the team then he has the potential to wear the armband every week. RVP v Fulham and southampton has the potential to be a massive goal fest.

Feeling reasonably comfortable but also a little nervous with this:

    DDG, fed
    Zabaleta, Cole, Clyne, Gorkss, Demel
    Lampard, VDV, Noble, Kacanilic, Michu,
    Aguero, Tevez, Torres,

I've obviously got problems with the number of players missing in GW3, Aguero's injury and VDV lack of security (?)....

I'm thinking of just benching Aguero and saving the transfer in the hope that things are clearer next week but will his price plummet or can I trust he has been protected?!

    Thanks

Your team is fine, don't WC. Take Torres out next week as he has no game in GW3. This rush to dump Torres makes me laugh, he was unlucky not to score on Sunday and actually played well. He has a home game in GW2 against a Newcastle team who play 48 hours beforehand in europe, keep Torres for this week.

Only way is if Rooney starts and gets subbed for RVP otherwise it would require playing 1 defensive mid and 2 wingers which would be a bit odd, they might have to do it late in games if they're losing i suppose.

4-2-3-1 with RVP up top, and Kag, Rooney and Val/Nani/Young as the three.
Doesn't sound likely though. Why shift Rooney wide?

      4-3-1-2
Doesn't sound likely either. Man U have too many wide players to fit in.

I don't see why all this Man U cover is essential, especially transferring in Rooney/RVP and captaining for next GW etc. There are plenty of very good options out there, those guys didn't show anything to make you think "YES! I neeeed him in my team!!" last night. Rooney looks as good as he did at the Euro's. Pretty much all of the good Man U players are very pricey, for now I'm staying with my Utd free team and doing ok because of it.

We'll see, I've got Chelsea and City cover with some back-up from Spurs and Arsenal - you can't fit the best of all the top teams in and all have likely high scorers. Utd cover is far far from essential, especially looking at their current squad.

      Friedel, (Federici),
      Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Cuellar, (Clyne, Demel),
      Bale, Mata, Yaya, Pienaar, (Guthrie),
      Torres, Tevez, Graham.

I had kept 2.0m in the bank for Torres -> Rooney but I haven't yet done the move 'cause I'm not sure. What should I do?:

      A) Torres -> Rooney

      B) Mata -> Michu, Torres -> RVP for -4

      C) Save transfer and get RVP in for Torres next week?

Does Sinclair think he has a chance of breaking into Man City"s team or is he just going for improved wages and is happy to sit on the bench for the majority of games?

Probably will take over the gametime of Adam Johnson. Milner looks a bit out of favor too so could steal some minutes from him.

Little bit of advice for my fellow managers.......NEVER work on your team when you come in smashed at 4 am! I've only gone and used a WC! Even after scoring 41 points with 5 players left to play again tomorrow night 🙁

      I'm so confused! WHY????
