Marouane Fellaini torments United from start to finish and hands Everton the three points after heading home from a corner. The Toffees continue the strong home form displayed at the end of last season, while United’s two new boys produce contrasting performances as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side get off to a losing start:

Marouane Fellaini
Tucking in behind Nikica Jelavic in David Moyes’ trusted 4-5-1 formation, the Belgian’s aerial ability proved the undoing of United time and again. With Everton targeting the visitors full-backs with long, diagonal balls, Fellaini continually put Sir Alex Ferguson’s side under pressure and grabbed the only goal of the game as Everton pulled off the first shock of the season. As to whether he will continue to play as far more is perhaps debatable – Kevin Mirallas wasn’t registered in time for the game and is also versatile enough to play fill the position but at 6.5 in FPL and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, Fellaini is sure to see plenty investment before the weekend’s trip to Villa.

Everton Defence
Perhaps last night’s result wasn’t quite as shocking as the media suggest. Everton closed out last season with six clean sheets in their last eight at Goodison and their defensive resilience was at the fore once again last night with an intelligent, well-drilled display ensuring they kicked off the season with a victory. Tony Hibbert and Sylvain Distin come in at 5.5 in FPL and if the Toffees maintain their superb form at the back in front of their supporters, the duo look decent value. With only two home matches in the next seven Gameweeks, though, many will overlook Moyes’ defenders, bearing in mind that Swansea and Spurs play at home five times over the same period.

David De Gea
The Spaniard produced a strong performance between the sticks to surely cement his place as United’s number one. Priced at 6.0 in FPL, De Gea certainly looks firmly in the driving seat ahead of Anders Lindegaard, with his 14.2% ownership on the rise on the back of last night’s heroics.

Shinji Kagawa
Handed the role in “the hole” behind Wayne Rooney with Danny Welbeck and Nani on the flanks, the summer signing looked a class apart but – in a similar story to that of Santi Cazorla on Saturday – failed to produce the points on his debut. What was noticeable is that Kagawa was handed 90 minutes – perhaps a sign of his manager’s faith, with Welbeck, Nani and Tom Cleverley the men to make way when Ferguson sent on the subs. At 8.5, he’s the lowest priced of United attacking midfielders and, with Antonio Valencia featuring at right-back last night, Kagawa looks a promising Fantasy prospect with (FUL, sot, WIG) to follow despite last night’s frustrating blank.

Robin Van Persie
Handed a substitute role midway through the second-half after Ferguson chose to field Wayne Rooney as a lone striker, the Dutchman had an anonymous debut. The Fantasy conundrum between the pair was, if anything, exacerbated by last night’s viewing – United maintained the 4-2-3-1 formation upon Van Persie’s arrival, with the two forwards both taking it in turns to drop deeper and drift out wide as the visitors chased the game. Intriguingly, Van Persie was immediately handed corners from the right hand side – Nani retained the left side, though Rooney took over after the Portuguese man was withdrawn. With the above-mentioned three games to follow, many will still be ready to gamble ahead of the weekend – let’s hope Ferguson’s Friday morning press conference is a little more revealing than usual. Post-match, the United boss was a little critical of his other players, suggesting he expects better service for the Dutchman in order for United to prosper:

We were a wee bit disappointing in terms of finishing off the approach play we had. We played around him (Van Persie) too much, we didn’t show enough penetration. With Robin in your team you know you want to use his ability against centre-backs in situations he is very good at – but we didn’t use him enough.

But if you take a hit in gw2, you really need those players to outscore the 2 you just transfered out.. or else, its better just to wait to make it a free transfer

All this angst over which Man U player to get.

Rooney has played with Welbeck, Berbatov or Hernandez up top, and still scored big points each season. Not that much has changed with the arrival of RVP.

RVP too pricey at 13.0, so it's still Rooney for my money. Rooney and Tevez for £21m - could do worse.

I've done Tevez to Aguero as mentioned above, keeping Rooney as there is just too much headache with the other players. So my dilemma now is do I stick with Torres until Aguero is fit, then double up on City, or stick with Torres and Tevez or Aguero indefinitely and do something with Lampard for Chelsea coverage?

I'm in two minds whether to cover all the teams or just stick to two/three?

Siggy/Cazorla in mid, Torres/ Ageuro or Tevez /Rooney gives me full coverage of the top five teams?

Or just cover Utd/City/Chels by going Hazard/Nasri then Torres/Aguero-Tevez/Rooney?

The key to the whole thing is Torres's performance over the next two home games.... 🙂

With all the uncertainty around high-£ strikers, surely a viable stratgey is Tevez plus 2 cheaper strikers (Bent, Graham etc.), then beef up the defence and midfield with the proceeds. The only viable MU area is their defence right now in my opinion. Thoughts?

I invested in Rafael and there he was on the bench last night.

What are the chances he will play against Fulham? He did quite well for Brazil in the Olympics. I don't understand why Fergie didn't start him. Surely Valencia will move into midfield and Nani will be dropped?

Fergie doesn't trust Rafael. He was defensively negligent in several games towards the end of last season and arguably cost them the title. As I recall, he was singularly at fault for 2 of Everton's 4 goals at OT.

The twins haven't turned out as Fergie had hoped. At least he can rely on Tony V and with so many defensive injuries, and too many forward options, I reckon he will continue at RB

With Rooney playing as the second striker this year, he will get about 15 goals.

    At 12m, that is useless.

      OK......

Bale has to start. He's captain material this week IMO.

Yaya has to start, even if it is away to Liverpool.

      Michu for sure.

      Graham as well.

      Tevez starts.

Torres will score at some stage so Yes.

      That leaves Pienaar and Taarabt.

Norwich vs QPR. 2 teams looking to bounce back. Would fancy QPR but is Taarabt much use away from home?

I think it's Pienaar for the last spot. Villa away is tough, but Pienaar is class.

Yet another shit start for me! Don't panic though kneejerkers I started badly last year and finished 330 WITHOUT taking hits (apart from DGWs), unless you picked your team solely for GW1 keep the faith, if still going badly you always have your wildcard to fall back on!

    Squad assessment after GW1

    Schwarzer Davis
    Cole Saylor Cuellar Rangel Fabio
    Mata Bale Pienaar Nzogbia Noble
    Aguero Torres Graham

GK - Delighted with both especially Davis as he has given me faith in playing him regularly (despite conceding 3, looks like Saints can put up a fight).
DEF - Ivanovic was my first choice over Cole but still think Cole was the sensible option as I am looking to keep for 7GWs. Despite talk of Swansea being less solid this year, Chico looks a good addition so am pleased with my Rangel choice. Fabio is only concern but I dont plan to play him for next 5 gws so can reassess.
MID - How long do I keep Mata for? Until he gets his rest he will always be a risk. Bale is a must have with his fixtures, Pienaar looked lively last night. Nzogbia is a concern, I only watched the Villla highlights but they were on the back foot most of the game which I wasn't expecting against WHM despite being away, will give him 2 or 3 weeks to impress. Noble is my bench warmer.
FWD - Very unlucky with Aguero, you can't prepare for this, thank god I didn't captain. Torres gives me another week to access striker options and cant believe Graham wasn't involved at all but is still a great option for following weeks.
