Has a stitched Wayne Rooney made things simple? Have we already got the template attacking lineup? Certainly Robin Van Persie’s goal, coupled with the injury to Rooney that looks to have sidelined him for a month, suggests that the source of attacking points at United is settled. Unless, of course, you’re committing to the slick trickery of Shinji Kagawa over Van Persie’s pure goal power.

City’s Carlos Tevez surely has another spot up front reserved for him and, while Fernando Torres is doing his upmost to cling to our affections, Eden Hazard’s irresistible form surely means that we have a preferred route to Chelsea’s flowing attacking points.

After just two weeks, a combination of Van Persie, Tevez and Hazard appears to give the very best coverage of potentially the three most potent teams in the league.

You can argue around this – Kagawa, Samir Nasri and Torres all offer the alternatives but, right now, while these words are typed, I’m struggling to see past this new holy trinity as the most powerful combination.

Throw in Michu, Steven Pienaar or Mauroanne Fellaini – perhaps dabble with Danny Graham up front while Swansea’s fixtures remain favourable, or even Emmanuel Adebayor to cover Tottenham’s attacking threat, and the template after Gameweek 2 begins to look solid.

As we discussed in the ScoutCast this week, there will be new names emerging that will threaten to break the ideas we have now but, in all honesty, it’s difficult to see Van Persie, Tevez and Hazard being anything other than season keepers; barring injury.

It can’t really be that simple and yet the twist of fate that saw Rooney first benched and then stretchered down the tunnel, almost rubber-stamped matters. There will surely be thousands scrambling for Van Perise, even more suitors for Hazard after another bout or returns from this evening’s victory. Meanwhile, Tevez has Liverpool in his sights tomorrow with a clear run of appearances while Sergio Aguero recuperates.

If you currently sit on all three, congratulations; please fight back the smugness. If you’ve none of the above, cling to the hope that there’s naivety in these words and that these power houses will falter. Either that, or scrub up for some serious squad surgery.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    OPINIONS PLEASE 🙂

    Three options over the two coming gameweeks (may revise when RDG vs SUN is decided)

    Option 1: Big Hitter
    GW3 - Torres -> Tevez
    - Cole -> Clichy/Kolarov/Zabaleta
    GW4 - Mata -> Hazard
    - Miyaichi -> Bale

    Super midfield and strong forward line
    Currently +0.4

    Option 2: Budgeting
    GW3 - Torres -> Tevez/Jelavic
    - Fox -> Clichy/Kolarov/Zabaleta
    GW4 - Mata -> Hazard
    - Miyaichi -> Pienaar

    Stronger defense, still a strong midfield and future budget
    Currently +1.4 w/ Tevez, +2.2 w/ Jelavic

    Option 3: RVP
    GW3 - RVP -> Torres
    - Fox -> Galas/McAuley
    GW4 - Mata -> Hazard

    Main benefit is having Van Persie in the team
    Currently +0.5

          Yeah they do have a bit of rougher patch in there, so that would be a reason to not go whole hog, since you might want to have some other options. There defense still looks shaky so they could end up in some 3-2, 4-3 matches when they face other quality sides.

      Only a fool would argue against SAF topping that list... so here goes:

      I can't reconcile how frequently he buys (or builds up) good players, just to rotate them and do their heads in: Berbatov, Hernandez, Young, Owen (meh, kind of), Rooney (!!! recent evidence), Anderson (recognizing that he had injuries), Nani... that's all I got off the top of my head. Berbs and Nani from a season or two ago stick out prominently in my mind -- he seemed to bench them at the top of their form just to remind them that he could. I'm surely missing something, because 19 titles don't lie.

      Add Martinez and O'Neil to that list, and downgrade Wenger if we're talking about recent history.

      I disagree on Pardew, one season doesn't make him great. Same could apply to Mancini but he has won titles.

      I would move Wenger above Mancini though. Regardless of his current predicament, he has done very well.

      So basically my list would be:

      SAF
      Moyes
      Wenger
      Mancini
      O'Neill (Not 100% sure on him but he has done well with his clubs)

    Pardew is a genius. Resting tiote so that chelsea didn't get a first hand look at how good he is and then try to buy him before the window closes!! Or at least I hope that is what happened!!

          * Newcastle played 4-4-2 in first half, Chelsea a fluid 4-2-3-1 throughout
          * Two in the middle against three or more in the middle - Chelsea overran the midfield and dictated the passing. They controlled the game and were allowed to run at the back four, the penalty being one of the consequences.
          * Newcastle were forced into constant long balls due to to their loss of the midfield - these weren't very successful
          * Once again Mata sat deep as passer with Hazard ahead of him as dribbler/creator.
          * Torres once again played as an unselfish forward who created space and held up play for the attacking three midfielders behind him. Service to him wasn't brilliant, he had no chances on a plate. But the interplay with the midfield was fantastic - it is more of a front four than a strictly divided 3 and 1.

          * At halftime Pardew had enough and switched to 4-3-3 to try to retake the midfield.
          * Barfa definitely went central at the start - playing in the hole behind Ba and Cisse as the two strikers. This is possibly Pardew's way of solving the who plays striker problem - and I think you suggested this.
          * In the midfield three Gutierrez stayed on the left, Anita deeper, Cabaye forward, though Cabaye and Anita worked together to circulate the ball just like he does with Tiote.
          * Barfa was dangerous and had a few good dribbles in this area.

          * Di Matteo made something of a mistake by taking Mata off towards the end. Chelsea's passing suffered without him and they lost control of the midfield. Newcastle managed to apply more pressure as a result and got some decent chances, the best of which was Ba outside the 6 yard box who should have scored.

          OVERALL: Why didn't Pardew play 4-3-3 from the start?

            Great summary Isacki. Big tactical blemish on part of Pardew. Also, one of Ba/Cisse need to drop back a bit further, if they want to create any impact on the game.

            Exactly. Seems like he is trying to keep ba happy to the detriment of the team.

            The is hope for marveaux yet! I would seriously consider just playing on of the dembas up front, and keep the other on the bench for if we want to change tactics later on

      Tough luck on the game last night, China. You have to agree the Toons were outclassed tactically. It was always going to happen - Torres loves it when oppositions play 442 (including Utd)

        Yeah. You guys certainly outplayed us. Chelsea looked good. I'm not sure what pardew was thinking, going 4-4-2 away at stamford bridge. Presumably just trying to keep ba happy. When we have everyone fit (ie tiote), then hopefully we will switch back.

        If you guys keep torres fit and on that form, you might just challenge at the top after all!

    Well, now that I've bitten the bullet and gone all in for the wildcard, I'm obviously riding the price rises now but this is the kind of final team I'm looking at:

    Begovic Jaaskelainen
    Baines Cuellar Zabaleta Hughes Demel
    Hazard Kagawa Ben Arfa Michu Guthrie
    RVP Tevez Graham

    Instead of Zabaleta and Demel I can also go Rangel and Boyce instead if preferable?

      I don't like it.

      Keepers are rubbish
      The defence is great.
      Hazard, Kagawa and RVP all have poor fixtures coming up in the near future.
      Swansea can't possibly keep up this rate of scoring therefore doubling on the attack is not a viable option long term.

        Cheers - my assumption is that Kagawa, RVP and Hazard could approach fixture-proof status if they fire. Certainly positionally they have the potential. Swansea do look very hot up front, it's no flash in the pan, though downgrading Michu would really make it much easier, I could then upgrade Kagawa to Cazorla or something like that.

        By the defence being great - do you prefer the Boyce & Rangel option or the original?

          There is little doubt in my mind that after gw 5 , form and fixtures will go absolutely against each other. The question remains which one will you follow....

          I think you will manage with a transfer per week, you don't have to think long term. But do get Cazorla by gw6.

            This, a transfer a week dealing with the fixtures as they develop. Maybe I should just get Cazorla from the start. It's so hard to imagine him failing long term.

              Without Rooney in the picture, Kagawa could see 150 minutes of action in gw3 and gw4. After that make sure it's a straight swap for Cazorla. It is really simple, you know.

    This week's transfer is set
    Torres>RVP
    but next week is decision time
    Bale or Toure > Hazard
    Drop
    A) Bale
    or
    B) Toure
    I'm leaning towards Toure as I also have Tevez and Lescott
    and I have only only Bale
