With Chelsea skipping the Gameweek, the early season form of Swansea and Everton ensures that their Fantasy assets hold firm in our Watchlist rankings. Up front, both Carlos Tevez and Robin Van Persie continue to stand out as the heavyweights of choice…

Goalkeepers

Two clean sheets in two, it’s little wonder that we see Michel Vorm retain top spot in the keeper rankings. Tim Howard climbs to second off the back of Everton’s superb start to the season – his fixtures also improve in the coming weeks, and with Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin in such strong form, further clean sheets seem likely. Howard looks a good option in goal for those without the funds to stretch to the raiding Leighton Baines.

Joe Hart’s lack of clean sheets will be a concern but with Vincent Kompany now seemingly the only secure option in front of him, the City stopper’s stock takes a rise for the month ahead for those willing to spend in this area. Hart remains the favourite as top ranked keeper, despite the early stutters and is your “fire and forget” option.

West Brom’s Ben Foster looks a decent option in the mid-price along with Newcastle’s Tim Krul, who now begins to benefit from a stronger schedule. Meanwhile, Brad Friedel has the fixture list on his side but his stock has taken a knock following persistent speculation surrounding the signing of Hugo Lloris at Spurs. Wigan’s Ali Al-Habsi is your budget option lower down the rankings, with Jussi Jaaskaleinan also worth a glance or two.

Defenders

Angel Rangel retains top spot, having superseded team-mate Chico following the doubts surrounding the centre-back’s fitness going into the win over West Ham. Rangel justified the backing with a goal and clean sheet return, and with fixtures remaining strong, the enterprising right-back holds firm under pressure from Everton’s Leighton Baines in second. Baines’ form epitomises the Toffees right now and, if you’re investing heavily in your defence, the left-back looks the prize option on offer.

With clean sheets so hard to find, the temptation is to opt for cheap options and those defenders that offer attacking potential – Wigan’s Emmerson Boyce fits the bill in both cases and claims a spot in our top five courtesy of some strong short-term fixtures.

While City’s defensive returns have been non-existent, an improved fixture list, and the fact that he stands out as the only apparently secure option, boosts Vincent Kompany in our thinking for the month ahead. He clings to a top five spot, with Tottenham’s Kyle Walker just retaining his place in that select group.

There are a host of mid-price options to consider below that, with West Brom’s Liam Ridgewell and Newcastle’s Steven Taylor appearing to offer decent potential.

Midfielders

Our faith in Gareth Bale wavers but Tottenham’s fixtue list remains strong enough to help him retain his top ranking, holding off the charge from United’s Shinji Kagawa, who now looks set to benefit from Wayne Rooney’s injury with a run of assured starts.

In truth, Eden Hazard would be sitting on top of the rankings had it not been for his blank at the weekend so, right now, he looks up on the likes of Hatem Ben Afra, Yaya Toure, Michu and Marouanne Fellaini as mid-price options. The latter just gets the nod over team-mate Steven Pienaar, although it’s ridiculously close between them – Fellaini’s goal threat just gives him the edge right now, while he continues to be deployed in support of Nikaca Jelavic.

Forwards

It’s no surprise to see Carlos Tevez remain on top here following his returns at Anfield on Sunday. Robin Van Persie cements his second place rank following Rooney’s injury, while Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse is the significant climber in third. The Senegalese striker now has stronger fixtures to come and will surely be well backed to break his duck for the season against Aston Villa this weekend.

Both Nikica Jelevic and Emmanuel Adebayor surely have goals to come given their forthcoming schedules, while Swansea’s Danny Graham still looks the strongest option in the budget bracket over the next month, having opened his account in the win over West Ham.

Lower down there are some great differentials if you want them – Fulham’s Mladen Petric rivals Graham in the budget bracket, as does Wigan’s Arouna Kone who impressed with his first strike at Southampton in Saturday’s win.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

apart from this week which are the good fixtures for city that the scouts speak of? and after puttin rvp and adebayor as the top 2 last week why have they fallen to 2nd and 5th? If anythin things are more in their favor now. And where's mignolet? their run of fixtures as good as it was last week. Cisse over Ba etc... the watchlist aint as brilliant as it usually is this time. I may and prob will be proved wrong however

Yeah, I'm sure it's all justified in stats etc, but I think it can be dangerous to go against your gut and side with the stats after only a couple of games. I'll be going Ba over Cisse, if I don't have HBA this week.

Anyone else thinking they might get rid of Bale or Zabaleta after this GW?

Bale plays Norwich at home so if he doesn't score a goal or assist, I will kick him out for Hazard.
Similarly, Zabaleta has QPR and if he can't get a clean sheet against them, he's out for Baines.

OK, I want to argue the toss about the notion of 'cover'. Who here thinks it is a valuable concept?

Maybe I don't understand it but it sounds like it means "having a player from a given team automatically gives you access to points scored from that team". Which is clearly BS. (I'm setting aside clean sheet points here because ironically people tend to not to use 'coverage' for the only case where it makes sense).

It's true enough that the top scorers are likely to be from the top teams because they have a good team around them, but that doesn't equate to coverage. You will only get those points if you have that player. Last season you needed RVP coverage, not Arsenal coverage.

    Or have I misunderstood?

I guess it's about not putting all your eggs in one basket and making sure your team is balanced. That way if Man U have a great game, you have chance that your Man U cover did well as well. Similarly, if Man U have a bad game, you don't have 3 players who all do poorly.

          It's psychological for me.

I don't want to not have any Spurs players at home to Norwich in case they run riot and win 6-0... I want to feel as though I'm involved if that's the case and not fall too far behind. Not being able to afford all of the big guns, maybe instead of having Bale, I've got Friedel and Lennon ... not because I really rate them as fantasy prospects, but because I'm scared of the outcome and these players should start in the match.

That's what it's about for me... foolish, perhaps but comforting, certainly.

I think the point is that you don't know who is going to score from a given team - if, say, Man Utd have 3 easy fixtures, it makes sense to have 'cover' in their attack.

Nope, but Valencia, or Kagawa, or Van Persie, or a fit Rooney, would be. I'm not saying you can just buy anyone from the team you want to cover, you have to use your common sense...

There is some point in buying into the bigger clubs as they offer stability in returning points. So when choosing between Michu and Hazard, its probably best to go with Hazard as Chelsea aren't going to self combust with one injury to the team.

Apart from that I agree cover is a load of BS.

I think everyone implictly acknowledges the validity of the concept of "coverage" in defence at least - clean sheets are earned by teams not by individuals, if one defender gets a cleanie so does the other, so all else being equal it doesn't ultimately matter which defender you get as long as you have one that "covers" that clean sheet.

In attack I think it's a slightly more dangerous concept because attacking points are earned by individuals not by teams, but even then there are times when "attacking coverage" works - look at Swansea, you could have thrown a dart at their front 4 and done ok.

It's an overused and often misused term, but it isn't devoid of all validity.

So it's like a shorthand for the set of high scoring players from successful teams? Saying "You need United coverage" means "You need one of: RVP, Kagawa or Valencia because they tend to score well".

Still seems like an unnecessary and arbitrary grouping. Better to give a list of high scoring players from ALL teams IMO

I think it's often used as a shorthand for that when talking about attackers, when people talk about City attacking coverage they don't mean De Jong - but in defence I think you can approach the whole concept with a bit more scientific certainty simply because points are awarded for things that the individual might not have played any useful part in, you can get a clean sheet *despite* the terrible performance of your defender, he could effectively be rewarded for happening to play for a particular team that apart from him defended well enough to get the CS.

Roscola just being silly with the Welbeck comment. Coverage simply mean having one of the major fantasy players from a club likely to do well in the coming weeks

ie tottenham = bale or adebyour
man u = kagawa or van persie
        chelsea =mata or torres
man c = tevez or silva
        etc

I know, I was illustrating my point with what philosophers might call a "reductio ad absurdum" 🙂

But your definition makes some sense: it's shorthand for the set of high scoring players from teams with a run of favourable fixtures. But a lot of people don't seem to use it that way.

agree to an extent buttttt.. if my two options are between two similar players, from teams of identical strength, with analogous form and fixtures, then i'd sooner spread the risk and opt for more expansive 'coverage'. the odds of both failing, i'd argue, is lower than only one.

There is such a thing as coverage but too often it is being used in the incorrect context.

As you correctly pointed out, it is a completely legitimate concept when considering defensive players who have a good run of fixtures on the horizon.

It does also hold some meaning when referring to an attacking player or players from a team who for some reason you cannot accomodate and hope to somehow limit their damage. This would perhaps be better described as insurance rather than coverage. There are certain teams where 'insurance' works as they boast a roster of relatively equal talents and therefore the goals/assists will be spread pretty evenly throughout the team. Swansea this season are shaping up to be like this.

The insurance concept is somewhat ruined by the managers who cannot recognise the teams with an uneven roster of talent where the attacking points will not be spread evenly e.g. RVP at Arsenal. They use 'coverage' in a reverse sense, i.e. they seek coverage for a player whose personal points potential is massive instead of seeking coverage for those teams where personal points potential is a lot more evenly distributed... which brings us on to another oft debated "misnomer".... the "essential/must have player".

I agree it needs clarification...eg no one is going to convince me that Cleverly is a good fantasy pick purely because it covers me regarding Man Utd. The best figure is percentage of goals a player is involved in.

Early in the season, but its clear that Hazard is great Chelsea coverage and Lampard less great.

RVP at Arsenal was a great example as he assisted or scored almost every goal.

By coverage people should just say 'you need the TEAM NAME player who is involved in most goals' ...I guess that's quite long though.

Yup. It's a bit like the 'due' concept which EVERYBODY hates. I think what people mean when they say 'player x is due' is 'player x has been getting in good scoring positions, getting chances, and if this continues he is likely to score one of the chances'.

        'Due' is shorter.

Yep, another good example. Bale for example is due a goal after the last game....in reality he's not due anything, but his good scoring positions and shots on goals could easily grab some goals on another day.

Out of curiousity, what other examples can you recall of someone starting the season with a bang in the first couple of weeks (multiple assists and goals) and then doing basically nothing for the rest of the season. Excluding factors outside their control like injury or being dropped.

          Defenders are pretty grand.
Mids the only one I like a lot is Kagawa, Noble isn't bad. Nasri I'm not fully convinced of, Ireland could be good if Villa get a move on and Taarabt is plain old sh*t.

Tough call - only Cisse played in Greece last week but I'd expect a slightly stronger line up this week, with out match being at home this weekend and also being on the Sunday instead of Saturday evening.

Pardew will want to make sure we get the job done but it'd just be a guess if I were to predict the lineup. It's a "wait and see" job I'm afraid.

I have not seen much of Newcatles opening two games but looking to bring in one of Ba or cisse.

I appreciate Ba has scored (I've seen the goal) but where is Pardew lining them up?

As when cisse arrived last Jan, Ba was shunted to the left and his goal returned stopped.

Anyone clock how they're slotting in?

        That is interesting.

Ba is a bit deeper, Cisse more advanced, Ba isn't as far right as Ben Arfa has a completely free role i.e. left / right with Gutierrez up the left on occasion.

The ball hasn't really fallen to Cisse yet in either match, it's Ba who has attracted the chances. It's a tough call but for £2m less, I'd be going for Ba at this point.
