Just when we thought his appetite for a deal had been sated after a summer of frantic activity, Mark Hughes returned to the transfer market once more to snap up the services of Esteban Granero from Real Madrid. The 25-year-old arrived just prior to the closure of the transfer window and has signed up on a four-year deal, for an undisclosed fee:

Amidst a dearth of new arrivals, the acquisition of Granero may prove to be one of Hughes’ canniest pieces of business over the last few months. The QPR boss was suitably delighted to welcome the Spaniard to his squad and clearly expects big things from “The Pirate”:

“He is a great player, first and foremost. You don’t play at a club like Real Madrid if you’re not. He has been there from the age of nine, so this has been a huge decision for him. He is very well regarded there and for him to leave a club of that stature to come to us shows the belief he has in what we are trying to do. He has got great energy and is technically very gifted, as you would expect from a Real Madrid player. He is very comfortable on the ball and is an all-round excellent midfielder, which we will benefit from.”

The Statistics

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Granero struggled to break into the first-team squad and was loaned out to Getafe for the 2007-08 season in order to gain top-flight experience. His campaign was a undoubted hit, with Granero helping his new side reach the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup in addition to returning three goals and a couple of assists in La Liga. Madrid subsequently sold the midfielder to Getafe the following season, installing a buy-back option in his contract should Granero continue to flourish – 35 appearances, five goals and four assists later, his former club was convinced enough to shell out for his services in time for the 2009 campaign.

His return to Madrid proved frustrating once again, though, particularly under Jose Mourinho. While Granero featured 31 times for Manuel Pellegrini, returning three goals and four assists, The Special One’s arrival saw his game time reduced considerably. The midfielder made just 15 starts over his final two seasons, with 21 further appearances as a sub helping him grab a goal and five assists. Granero has featured for his country at every level from U16 to U21 but has yet to make the step up to the senior side.

The Prospects

While question marks still remain over a number of the summer signings, it’s unlikely that Granero has moved from the Bernabeu to be a bench-warmer in London. He seems set to be a key figure in the QPR midfield for the season ahead, with a central midfield berth looking likely – while he’s also known for his work-ethic, a role alongside an industrious ball-winner such as Samba Diakite or Alejandro Faurlin would complement his passing ability perfectly.

This could afford Hughes the chance to move Ji-Sung Park to the right flank though, alternatively, Granero is versatile enough to play behind a lone striker in a 4-4-1-1. Fantasy managers will be keeping a close eye on such a scenario, with the Spaniard’s consistency of performance and unselfish style of play maybe even edging him ahead of Adel Taarabt in Hughes’ thoughts further up the pitch.

Much will depend on how quickly QPR can settle this season. With a single point from their opening three matches, they are clearly a work in progress and investment in their Fantasy assets has been mainly put on hold until the new boys start to click; Granero – even with relatively kind prices of 5.5 and 6.5 in FPL and the Sky Sports game respectively – is likely to be monitored from afar in the meantime, then.

With showdowns against Chelsea and Spurs immediately on the horizon, the short-term potential seems limited, though a run of fixtures from Gameweek 6-12 looks highly promising. QPR square up to the likes of (WHM, wba, EVE, RDG, SOT) over that period and if Hughes’ side are to pick up in performance, Granero’s midfield scheming could well be integral to their chances of success.

Ok, so after the helpful comments above, revised RMWCT:

    Vorm - Jaskelainen
    Jagielka - Hangeland - Shawcross - Demel - Barnett
    Cazorla - HBA - Michu - Maloney - Noble
    RVP - Tevez - Fletcher

1m in bank, so could upgrade Jagielka to Baines, how's that?

Anybody considering Berbatov? Exceptional goals/assists to games ratio wherever he has played and it appears that Jol is developing a system based around the insouciantly languid Bulgarian playmaker. He could well dwarf the returns of Fletcher, Graham and Lambert...may become a cunning differential in the coming weeks...

            Done

A belated welcome to you sir

Welcome to Stoke-On-Trent's most prestigious and exclusive fantasy league, the Clayton Village, Southern Area, Division 3...Potteries Premier L5 Classic...it's a league rising from the ashes of the Daily Telegraph’s game back in the late 90’s and run by a couple of Stoke-On-Trent based managers, hence, the Potteries moniker.

Summer developments left last season’s memorable ‘L5 League’ franchise in crisis. The exodus of league president and fantasy football icon, one Jafa-the-lad, left the L5 league facing administration and the fantasy graveyard until an eleventh hour reprieve emerged in the form of a rescue package from a consortium representing The Potteries Premier Classic. Following a meeting of the Potteries sub-committee a merger was finalised and applications from the L5 elite were accepted.

So, we offer a warm welcome, and a toast, to L5 fantasy luminaries including Doosra, Fratboy, Drinky, ENR, TW, China Mag, Mind over Mata, Billy Ketsu, Acquafresca, Yash, Kaz, the ‘Nuf-Nufs’ and the incomparable SABG...

Yeah, I really want him too. I'm likely going to WC in the next international break and plan to bring him in then unless I arrange it beforehand. It sort of coincides with Swansea's fixtures toughening up so is prob a good time to ditch Graham.

I had previously said I was going to bring in Aguero for Tevez when he's fit as will be massive differential, plus the price difference is a £1million different to the start of the season (selling pricfe and falls).

So I should really be saving £1.6m odd to make that change really shouldn't I?

        a) Everyone else has Tevez, but given choice at start of the season people would have taken Aguero over him it was only price and Aguero injury that has shot his ownership up.

        b) Aguero is definitely the main goalscorer, and Tevez will probably play deeper when Aguero is back.

        c) Aguero is on penalties too.

line them up side by side...in the fantasy world...and Tevez wins hands down...they both dip their feet into dropping deep to receive service. But Tevez is better than anyone at it...Rooney...Ba...you name it. Meaning, he always work hard enough to receive the finishing ball at the end...his workrate and effectiveness at taking on defenders is unquestionable.

            Don't know about unquestionable.

The two big seasons he had FPL wise were when he was the main striker at City and had no competition.

When he played that role for Utd in his final season there (when Rooney was pushed up top) he got 5 goals and 3 assists all season.

I think he spent a lot of time on the bench as Utd had signed Berbatov.

I'm a big fan of Tevez and the original price of £9m was a steal. The only doubt was whether he would be staying and when that became apparent there was just no point in paying the extra for Aguero. Aguero will do well and returns will be comparable, but the price tag sways irrespective of who has spot kicks.

it's getting to the point like two seasons ago when he was too crucial to leave out of the line-up. May not be clear to you, but to Mancini that sees them train...it is unquestionable. He goes hard in training to the point it makes the dzekos and balos look bad.

If they were equal in price, the majority would go with Aguero.

That means it is expected Aguero will score higher than Tevez.

They are obviously NOT equal in price, but low ownership for Aguero and high for Tevez, means you can steal a march, plus get in whilst the price allows it.

Just read a headline saying Aguero feels he might be able to play for Argentina next tuesday, it's going to cause so many headaches for FPL players when he gets back, same goes for Rooney. I don't see the forward options being so simple when all this comes into play. I can imagine budget strikers becoming much more the way to go later on.

Yep and instead of the other guy keeping the money in the bank, far better to keep a spare transfer rolling and just change two players the week you want to Swap Tevez to Aguero. (I think it will need Tevez to lose gametime i.e subbed off around 65mins for Balotelli a couple of times of Tevez on bench, Balotelli starts for me to ship out Tevez).
While he gets the minutes stay with him, he can score and he can assist and will pick up bonus points with it. I see people with Cisse (9.5) and Jelavic (8.5) and possibly even Bent, so just stay with Tevez at his price.

How do lads, any ideas would be greatful.... I got to work away at the end of the week till the start of December so going to wildcard and just set up the strongest starting XI as i'm not sure how often i'll be able to tinker...

Whats people views on the must haves for the next 3 months?

In order i'm thinking RVP - Hazard - Michu - Santi - Tevez - Torres?

Not sure on Tevez if Aguero is going to come back soon, as for defence i'm thinking clean sheets are a bit of a crap shoot...mind i like the look of Bertrand if he can keep playing, bonus that he doesn't look likely to be used as an impact sub later on in games?

Pick a good 11 with great fixtures, who are not rotated, 1 solid GK
Make sure you have two playing 4-4.5 subs maybe 1x 3.9 defender

Rightio Then...I've tried looking at the fixtures but with about 11 games its hard to narrow down...

        Foster - 4.0
        Verm - Hangeland - Bertrand - Zabaleta - (Demel)
Hazard - Ben Arfa - Cazorla - (El Ahmadi) - (Kacaniklic)
        Tevez - RVP (c) - Di Santo

I'm happy risking Bertrand due to his price and out of position so far this season. Verm and Hange should offer a goal threat regardless of fixtures, Zab seems the cheaper way into Man Citys defence. Toyed with Michu but really dunno how long the band-wagon will last 4.

Other than that tried to Cover the big guns (give or take Spurs and Pool), without doubling up?

I'm curious how other FFS'ers are approaching the issue of the 5th midfielder & 3rd striker

I don't see many RMT's which rotate these two based upon fixtures (which would assume that the first 4 mid's and 2 mains srtikers would always play regardless of fixtures)

Is the common wisdom to pick the best '5th and 3rd' money can buy, or to buy of '5th and 3rd' who rotate well around the other 6 front players?

I prefer 3-4-3 so tend to have a budget MID, in my case Guthrie. Cisse at 9.5 is my third striker, thus showing that currently this is not the best policy.

I have a budget 3rd striker (Graham) but I have played him every gameweek and I will continue to do so because I'm pretty confident he'll outscore my cheap 5th mid each week (Kaca).

However I have thought about having a budget 3rd forward and 5th mid but couldn't find any that rotated well or were worth getting.

Don't lose to much sleep over it. Lambert/Guthrie rotate ok ish. I just need to get rid of the tit called Petric.

The thing is Lambert has already shown that he can score against anyone, so he is an option to play week in week out. Last thing you want is him scoring points on your bench.

Or else he's very good at conserving energy! Would rather have someone who has fewer chances and converts them than say Suarez who has a lot of shots but enjoys hitting the woodwork more than the back of the net!

That said if Michu's goals start to dry up against tougher opposition I'll happily pocket the 0.4+ profit and find another mid price mf.

I am very very worried about not having RVP. But I will just try to survive the Wigan fixture and he probably wont be so much of a must have going forward IMO(as the fixtures go south). I will be one of the people owning Rooney and Aguero(as soon as they are fit) over Tevez and RVP- so I dont want to use a transfer to get RVP in short term.
Also Lamps to Hazard seems sideways- I feel lamps still has some points in him in the coming weeks- my plan is to get hazard in for Kags in GW 5 as Kagawa is not really living up to my expectations.
One of the options I also have in mind is Jenk or Zaba to Baines but I feel that both could do well this gameweek and I have Ba playing against Baines- so probably this one can wait as well.

I still tend towards getting rid of players that do not play, if a big hitter is benched for a CL game and say Graham tweaks a calf in the warm up points from the like of Guthrie are a godsend.

Yeah about 5 1/2 hours ago. Yeah it's weird that we have a western state being WA and consider the east coast as a whole the same as you. 😀

winter now for you guys right?
still hard for me to get over the idea of you guys having christmas during the summer when i'm used to the idea of hoping for a white xmas

Yeah but winter isn't very cold here, not like in Seattle. Days are usually about 60F in winter, whereas christmas is anywhere from 80-105F.

seattle is a lot colder than Australia but winters here aren't that cold compared to other parts of the U.S. like chicago, minnesota, michigan, new england area, etc.

usual temp during the winters is 40F and during the summer is usually 60-80. we can't handle it here if it gets into the 90's or 100's! thats a heat wave for us as rarely anyone has AC haha

wow it must be really nice there! as i said i've got a friend in melbourne so may come visit sometime in the next couple years

still can't imagine christmas on a beach (unless you're in hawaii and still that seems kinda weird). do you guys ever get snow in austrialia?

Wow! Isn't Seattle really far north or does the ocean moderate the temperature? I couldn't imagine life without an AC haha.

We only really get snow in the higher mountains around Mt Kosciusko. I occasionally snows in the hills around the Southern states.

No, you have went the wrong way...

Aussie is anywhere between 7 and 9 hours ahead (sometimes 10 with DSL)... so 3am would be 10am in WA and 12pm here on East Coast...

you want to free up like 0.3 mil by subbing a guy who has scored 4 from 3 and has around 5 more favorable fixtures coming up in near future? doesnt sound worth it to me! depends who u have and want to bring in! surely there is an easier way to free up money! just my opinion

Noticed more trolling this year or maybe it's just because it's start of the season and they haven't got bored of it yet. Heres a thought though, clearly it's a cry for attention so how about everyone just ignores them? It's is hard not to point out to an annoying t*** that they're an annoying t*** but sure it would work 🙂

Migs -> 4.5 keeper that rotates well with Foster

      Yaya -> Cazorla

Very good team though. You can keep Yaya, I just think Cazorla is a good one to get while you're on your WC.

Hate Petric- hated him even before Berbs came there.
Dont really like Yaya long term either, especially once Silva is back to full fitness, but I could be just bitter 🙂
I think you could replace Williams with the 4 mil LB im fairly sure he will play unless someone new will come in.

Talk of Michu out 'cos he won't be able to keep it up.

    1) He doesnt need to keep it up, he can be half as effective and still be worth it.
    2) I think it was Cisse(I may be mistaken) who also hardly had any shots on target last year, and we know how that ended up.
    3) As long as he stays on top of the midfielders table, there will still be loads of investment.

I think I'll be keeping him till the end of swans run of good fixtures.
