Just when we thought his appetite for a deal had been sated after a summer of frantic activity, Mark Hughes returned to the transfer market once more to snap up the services of Esteban Granero from Real Madrid. The 25-year-old arrived just prior to the closure of the transfer window and has signed up on a four-year deal, for an undisclosed fee:

Amidst a dearth of new arrivals, the acquisition of Granero may prove to be one of Hughes’ canniest pieces of business over the last few months. The QPR boss was suitably delighted to welcome the Spaniard to his squad and clearly expects big things from “The Pirate”:

“He is a great player, first and foremost. You don’t play at a club like Real Madrid if you’re not. He has been there from the age of nine, so this has been a huge decision for him. He is very well regarded there and for him to leave a club of that stature to come to us shows the belief he has in what we are trying to do. He has got great energy and is technically very gifted, as you would expect from a Real Madrid player. He is very comfortable on the ball and is an all-round excellent midfielder, which we will benefit from.”

The Statistics

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Granero struggled to break into the first-team squad and was loaned out to Getafe for the 2007-08 season in order to gain top-flight experience. His campaign was a undoubted hit, with Granero helping his new side reach the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup in addition to returning three goals and a couple of assists in La Liga. Madrid subsequently sold the midfielder to Getafe the following season, installing a buy-back option in his contract should Granero continue to flourish – 35 appearances, five goals and four assists later, his former club was convinced enough to shell out for his services in time for the 2009 campaign.

His return to Madrid proved frustrating once again, though, particularly under Jose Mourinho. While Granero featured 31 times for Manuel Pellegrini, returning three goals and four assists, The Special One’s arrival saw his game time reduced considerably. The midfielder made just 15 starts over his final two seasons, with 21 further appearances as a sub helping him grab a goal and five assists. Granero has featured for his country at every level from U16 to U21 but has yet to make the step up to the senior side.

The Prospects

While question marks still remain over a number of the summer signings, it’s unlikely that Granero has moved from the Bernabeu to be a bench-warmer in London. He seems set to be a key figure in the QPR midfield for the season ahead, with a central midfield berth looking likely – while he’s also known for his work-ethic, a role alongside an industrious ball-winner such as Samba Diakite or Alejandro Faurlin would complement his passing ability perfectly.

This could afford Hughes the chance to move Ji-Sung Park to the right flank though, alternatively, Granero is versatile enough to play behind a lone striker in a 4-4-1-1. Fantasy managers will be keeping a close eye on such a scenario, with the Spaniard’s consistency of performance and unselfish style of play maybe even edging him ahead of Adel Taarabt in Hughes’ thoughts further up the pitch.

Much will depend on how quickly QPR can settle this season. With a single point from their opening three matches, they are clearly a work in progress and investment in their Fantasy assets has been mainly put on hold until the new boys start to click; Granero – even with relatively kind prices of 5.5 and 6.5 in FPL and the Sky Sports game respectively – is likely to be monitored from afar in the meantime, then.

With showdowns against Chelsea and Spurs immediately on the horizon, the short-term potential seems limited, though a run of fixtures from Gameweek 6-12 looks highly promising. QPR square up to the likes of (WHM, wba, EVE, RDG, SOT) over that period and if Hughes’ side are to pick up in performance, Granero’s midfield scheming could well be integral to their chances of success.

i'll just reply here to make it easier:

I think part of it is the ocean and part is being north. we aren't that far north though as we have all of canada north of us. but besides eastern WA (east of the mountains where its usually warm and dry) it stays pretty moderate all year round. which is awesome because it allows us to play football (soccer) outdoors all year round! 😀

haha yeah i bet, your life would be hell without AC. we dont need it mcuh so we don't have it but then when 90F comes we all have issues haha

okay, I wasn't sure cuz my friend from Melbourne had never seen snow before he came here. do you guys have much skiing and stuff in the mountains?

Yeah. There are quite a few resorts in the higher mountains of Victoria and NSW, mostly near the border between them. Tasmania has a couple too. Our mountains are only 1500-2200m high so not very high. It's a 10hr drive from where I live to the good ski fields though 🙁

i gotcha. better than nothing though. thats too bad :(. I live an hrish away from skiing but have only been a couple times my whole life because i'm always playing soccer (still feel weird saying football because I feel like i'm talking about american football haha)

on a totally different note, how's your team holding up in la liga? 😀

Well after a dreadful start put me in last place, I've won my last 2 to climb up to 11th and nipping at your heels 😀 I'm steering clear of the obvious bandwagons and hoping for the best 🙂

nice! as long as you don't pass me, keep it up ;).

so you're going the riskier route? you will shock some people in your h2h's and shoot up the rankings if your differentials do well but if the bandwagons do well you'll suffer

I lost by 5pts this week. kinda glad ddg didn't play because if he did i wouldda been mad at myself for taking a 4pt hit to get baines in (long term transfer and had to do it then because of prices).

Do we know if Sagna has even resumed training yet. I've not heard anything and going by previous injuries to Arsenal players, that usually means he isn't that close to returning. I'd say after the following international break is far more likely. Even a surprise return could see him alternating early on whilst his form/fitness picks up making Sagna play the champs lge games and Jenkinson playing the prem games which in fpl terms is all that matters.

I'm happy to keep Jenkinson for now and make a switch later when it becomes an issue as 4.5m was a ridiculously cheap way to get a stake in one of the big teams defences - even if three clean sheets was unexpected.

They don't always pay off but Jenkinson over Vermaelen, Tevez over Aguero and shortly Agbonlahor over Bent can free up around £6m - £7m on original prices. That gets you your Van Persie instead of a Jelavic/Ba type player.

Yeah that's why Williams is in there at the moment. Looking at it though, I don't see what other options he has. Might consider getting him in later on in the week after all the price rises. If he doesn't play, he doesn't play, my team will still be better with that 1.0 elsewhere

lost on bottom of last page...

Talk of Michu out ‘cos he won’t be able to keep it up.

    1) He doesnt need to keep it up, he can be half as effective and still be worth it.
    2) I think it was Cisse(I may be mistaken) who also hardly had any shots on target last year, and we know how that ended up.
    3) As long as he stays on top of the midfielders table, there will still be loads of investment.

I think I’ll be keeping him till the end of swans run of good fixtures.

Pienaar and Valencia last season had similarly high conversion percentages...it doesn't always tell the whole story...are these guys shooting only when a prime chance emerges? and if it doesn't are they passing it to a team-mate who is in a better position? perhaps they possess greater vision and awareness, making a key pass rather than shooting on sight?

yeah... I think too much can be made of the stats especially since the stats are far from comprehensive! It's the same with possession. a team with 20% possession can beat one with 80% simply because they do something with it and don't pass around midfield all game long hoping for a break in defence

    A left-field choice for the 3rd Striker Spot - Agbonlahor 6.9m.

Back from injury and came on as sub at Newcastle and looked lively. I see him starting after the International Break and Villa have nice fixtures. He did well at a similar price at the start of last season and has just 0.2% ownership - some will say there is a reason for that, but he'll pick up some 6pts and 9pts over the next six gameweeks.

Plus he could be up against the Rookie Left Back of Swansea and Agbonlahor could have some joy with his pace setting up Bent, of not scoring himself.

To me Villa look a good bet to win that one.

Law of averages (even though there is no such thing)

He's only scored 1 of 10 Swans goals. One would think (and hope) that he will score more than 10% of Swansea goals this season as lone striker.

Graham's gold at the price, for a slow burner. Same as Lambert really. A goal or two will sway the masses in any week, but at the end, they'll do about the same, I reckons.

This is true. Bego is a good option if rotated with someone nailed-on like Foster, though - but I wouldn't advise it if rotating with another rotation risk, such as De Gea. High risk of a no-Gk week.

Foster/Bego seems to be the logical choice alright seeing as other keepers have cheaper options in their defence.

For example instead of Migs (5.0), you could have Cuellar (4.5).

The one doubt in my mind is the huge attacking potential of Ridgewell and McAuley. Is it worth saving 0.5 to miss out on those?

    Was going to do
    Petric - Rvp
    Kags - Sterling
    Baines - 4.0 defender

would be 12pt hit as already brought in Torres for Ade

    Current team

    Vorm, Cerny
    Baines, Clyne, Demel, Rafael, Rangel
    Pienaar, Michu, Kags, Hazard, Yaya
    Torres, Petric, Tevez

    New with changes above

    Vorm, Cerny
4.0 Def, Clyne, Demel, Rafael, Rangel
    Pienaar, Michu, Sterling, Hazard, Yaya
    Torres, Rvp, Tevez

12 point is unnecessary, especially when you're taking Baines out as well.

      Yaya/Kagawa -> Guthrie (I'd remove Yaya)
      Torres -> RVP

      Better?

For a -12 point to work, you need every player you're bringing in to be better than the one you're taking out. That's not the case here. Madness

Or RVP alone could cancel out the hits.

He'd have to get a hattrick, and that would pull it just above level.

This is going to a long 2 weeks...

When the matches do come, I won't have any Arsenal cover, (SOT) but I will have 3x MUN (WIG) so could turn out well (Rafa hattrick).

Keeping the wild card will be a nice Differencial for latter in the season. Mental the amount that have gone so far

Probably going to stubbornly hold onto my WC for at least this gameweek, It all depends on RVP really and whether he keeps up this madness! (obviously he will but I hope it's not another hat-trick) I've worked out a decent way for me to get him in after GW4 without severely compromising my team, it'd be for an 8 point hit but might be needed.

Basically one of my high-priced defenders > 4.5 Defender
    and Kagawa > 6.0 Midfielder

That leaves me with enough to afford RVP. It might save me Wildcarding and I'd still be relatively happy with my team and be able to tweak it slowly so the rest of my team looks well balanced.

I think it's worth sacrificing Kagawa if you're going the RVP route.

I think your right. More united cover the better but RVP is the main one to have if any

    I'm a bit bored.

    So.......Podolski or Carzola?

I can downgrade Podolski to Berbatov and upgrade Nolan to Carzola.

I'd then have Yaya, Michu, Hazard, Carzola and Guthrie in midfield.

Berbatov, Tevez & RVP would be my fowards.

Cazorla is the only option. Better value for money than Podolski. The amount of competition that Podolski has makes him far less attractive, especially when comparing him to Cazorla who has his place nailed down.

Trying to resist the knee jerk WC, but without hazard and michu points are suffering, does this team scream WC? Any thoughts welcome!

    Vorm – Jussi

    Hangeland – A. Cole – Lescott – Mc Cartney – Clyne

    Kagawa – Felliani – Bale – Larsson – R. Kanu

    Tevez – Torres – Graham
