Vito Mannone is determined to nail down the Arsenal number one spot. Brendan Rodgers could be set to welcome back Joe Cole and Oussama Assaidi, Jimmy Kebe expects to be back training within two weeks for Reading, James Perch may be available for Newcastle’s Gameweek 4 trip to Everton, while Goran Popov is keen to earn a permanent move to West Brom…

Vito Mannone is determined to shrug off the challenge of Wojciech Szczesny in the battle for Arsenal’s number one jersey. Farmed out to Hull on loan last season, Mannone racked up a club record six clean sheets – a key factor in his recent performances, he explains:

“I have improved in every part of the goalkeeper position. In my mind as well, I came back stronger and stronger. It is a good fight between the keepers because we know the level is quite high and you need to keep working and improve yourself to get the first spot. The best thing was playing senior football and playing consecutive games and getting the mentality of the number one. When you are number one, you feel important and like the happiest man in the world, that sort of feeling gives me the chance to go onto the pitch with confidence. I would like to be involved more and more and establish myself.”

Certainly, the Italian has staked a strong claim to continue between the sticks for the Gameweek 4 visit of Southampton. Since stepping in for Szczesny, Mannone has racked up back-to-back clean sheets away to Stoke and Liverpool and, with the Gunners the only side yet to concede this season, the Arsenal defence is generating plenty interest right now. Szczesny is expected to be fit for the Saints match, handing Arsene Wenger a real selection headache – if Mannone continues ahead of the Pole, he looks an intriguing option at 4.5 in FPL and 4.1 in the Sky Sports game. Wenger’s team sheet for the clash could well give us more to go on if both keepers are fit.

Brendan Rodgers could be set to welcome Joe Cole and Oussama Assaidi to Liverpool’s first-team squad for the Gameweek 4 trip to Sunderland. The Liverpool boss gave an injury update on the pair’s progress yesterday:

“Joe is working well and the medical department are pleased with his progress. He was out onto the pitch over the weekend doing some work so there’s still a little way to go with Joe yet but he’s on the right track. He (Assaidi) was due to play in the reserve game, but after training he felt a little bit of tightness. We’re hoping in the next couple of days he’ll be ready to train and rejoin the group.”

Cole has been missing since limping out of the season opener at West Brom within 11 minutes of coming on as a sub, while Assaidi has yet to feature since moving from Dutch outfit Heerenveen – with Stewart Downing out of form, Raheem Sterling has started the last two. One of the few positives in a poor start to the season, the 17-year-old has started to pick up interest due to his cut-price valuation across the Fantasy games but Assaidi, in particular, looks the likeliest to rival him for game time – with a similarly pacey and direct style of play from the left, his attacking threat could well prove vital as Rodgers looks for goals to halt the Reds’ stuttering start to the campaign.

Remaining in the Liverpool camp, and Jose Enrique has spoken out about the competition from Stewart Downing for his left-back role, revealing some significant tactical insights in the process…

“With the way we intend to play, that is with the right-back and left-back attacking, Stewart can fit in well…The manager wants me to make more assists and score more goals and play more like a forward. He has told Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly to do the same and Stewart Downing in the left-back role.â€

For Fantasy managers, there is significance in Enrique’s statement that again suggests that we will see increased attacking returns from Liverpool’s full-backs under Brendan Rodgers. We’re yet to see this materialise and, given Liverpool’s stuttered start to the season, few are likely to take an early gamble. However, clearly the tactics are in place to see the full-backs come into the equation more often in attacking terms.

James Perch is hopeful of a return to action for Newcastle’s Gameweek 4 trip to Everton. With Danny Simpson all but ruled out due to a hamstring injury and Ryan Taylor facing months on the sidelines with a knee injury, Perch is expected to take up the right-berth berth, providing he recovers in time from a neck problem. Cheick Tiote’s imminent return could see Vernun Anita cover in defence if required, though – the summer signing from Ajax filled in for Simpson against Villa at the weekend, having started the game in midfield due to the Ivorian’s absence.

West Brom new boy Goran Popov has spoken of his delight at moving to the Hawthorns on loan and is already determined to seal a permanent move to the in-form midlands outfit:

“I am so happy that I came here. I have signed a contract and hope that after this first year I will sign for two or three more.”

The left-back’s arrival has the potential to scupper many a Fantasy plan right now. With the Baggies registering clean sheets in both their home matches thus far, and with three of their next four at the Hawthorns looking favourable (RDG, QPR, SOT), the likes of Gareth McAuley and Liam Ridgewell have been subject to plenty investment. If Popov ousts Ridgewell from his current left-back berth, however, the former Birmingham man is likely to battle it out with McAuley for a spot at centre-half – until Clarke’s intentions become clearer, it may well be that Jonas Olsson offers the safest route into the back-four right now, with Ben Foster’s saves points furthering the keeper’s case between the sticks. Certainly, it’s a situation worth monitoring – Popov is priced at just 4.5 in FPL and could well offer the best value route into the Baggies defence if he establishes himself as a first-team regular.

Jimmy Kebe handed Reading a boost yesterday by announcing he should be back training within a couple of weeks. The Royals winger took to twitter to reveal:

“Doctor seen this morning for an injection on my hamstring…it’s getting better though, should be back for training in 10 days hopefully.”

Yet to feature in his side’s two games this season due to a hamstring problem, Kebe’s absence afforded Garath McCleary a chance to benefit in the previous match at Chelsea. The former Forest man provided an assist for Pavel Pogrebnyak in the 4-2 defeat at the Bridge but despite his promising start, could well be set to drop out upon Kebe’s return. While the injured winger has now slipped to 4.9 in FPL, Danny Guthrie is now as low as 4.4 and, playing as the most advance central midfielder in a 4-4-1-1, the latter is far and away the most popular midfielder amongst Brian McDermott’s side right now.

Elliot Ward has been left out of Norwich’s 25-man squad for the Premier League campaign. The centre-half missed the start of the season due to a leg problem but has slipped down the pecking order following the signings of Seb Bassong and Michael Turner over the summer. Ward had offered a cheap potential route into the Canaries backline but is now unavailable until the New Year at least – with fellow cut-price option Marc Tierney losing his left-back role to Javier Garrido, it leaves Leon Barnett as the cheapest alternative. Priced at 4.0 in FPL, he has quickly ousted Turner from the heart of defence after the latter’s dire display in the 5-0 defeat at Fulham in Gameweek 1 – Barnett has struck up a solid partnership with Bassong, helping Chris Hughton’s side bounce back and concede just twice in the subsequent two Gameweeks.

AVB is a wrecker of teams... waiting for them to actually show something... I don't care about the fixtures with the team playing so badly it doesn't matter how easy the opponents are! Also Bale hasn't scored a goal since January or something...

There are two, quite interesting, mutually exclusive narratives going on about this.

1 = AVB is AOK. Never given time / trust. Radical methods, record with Porto, Mourinho magic...

2 = Porto was a lucky fluke. Hulk + Falcao etc. Fallen out with everyone, big spender, defensive record in Pl with his high line.

If he gets it right, he could be Benitez mk II, ie: great success with rigourous training. Or Benetez mk III = devisive, controlling, slightly hysterical, goatee.

This crossed my mind the other day... Everybody is claiming the Premier league is the best league in the world. Is it? After looking at some of the players who's arrived from La liga (rated as the best league in the world by many) to the Prem, most of them has taken the English league with storm. Is the level higher in Spain, or is the technical way of playing more suitable in Premier League?

Juan Mata - At times brilliant for Chelsea
David Silva - At his best, exceptional
Michu - What a kick start!
Santi Cazorla - Looking sharp so far
Oriel Romeu - Under AVB, one of Chelseas best players
Pepe Reina - One of PL best goalies the last few years
Fernando Torres - Brilliant at Liverpool!
Yaya Toure - The machine of Citys midfield
Sergio Aguero - Sharp last season
De Gea - Finally becoming the goalie Sir Alex was looking for
Coloccini - Has taken PL with storm. The chief of Newcastles defence

    Thoughts lads? Nonsense?

EPL is the best, by far.

Take the the third best team in Spain, they'd struggle to beat any of the top 8 in the EPL.

With the exception of Michu all those players came with a significant price tag? Not average players.
The equivalent of placing Van Persie, rooney, Vidic, Kompany, Vermalen, Ben Arfa etc in La Liga would have the same result surely and therefore the same argument could then be made.

      It's just phases, iniit.

5 years ago, PL was probably the "strongest" league - no fear of continental giants, pool beating RM at a canter etc.

La Liga has since grown in strength, despite its problems.

The German League has grown in strength and so has the French, though not as much.

This can be seen through transfers and subsequent performances (also see Kevin Price at Milan, Zlatan, Strikers with good Dutch records etc)

I just read the article someone linked on the last page about different types of fantasy players. Very entertaining. The last paragraph's mention of the old Fantasy Football you used to do in the newspaper really made me nostalgic. I remember buying a paper in August and frantically picking a team along with my brothers and using a phone to dial up and key in the code for your team, is my memory correct on this? It seems so absurd now, how did you even remember what points you were on? I do remember writing down in a notepad all the players worth having and the teams with the best fixtures...weird how I'd forgotten all this detail until the mention of it triggered the memory. Anyone else used to get excited by Fantasy Football around August? I remember clearly losing interest almost every year but it was the new season excitement that attached itself to it that made it so much fun.

Scores came out every Tuesday or Wednesday depending on the paper. You could post your changes or later use premium rate phone lines (Shit that was expensive).
Not exactly the daily involvment you get now. Still fun though.

Oh ye, I remember now the midweek points thing. The idea of posting changes is hilarious now. Oh and I remember how bloody expensive it was, but it was so worth it at the time. I felt pretty guilty after entering my team on the phone knowing it was probably not worth my parents hard-earned money!

The day Arsenal don't concede all season is the day a pterodactyl and a bear mate to produce a bearodactyl, who rips out the spines of birds and kills dolphins. Mannane may not be dropped after conceding though, and he is still likely to be given chances soon after if he does get dropped.

Yeah back in '95 me and my school mates did the same group auction and (a rotated two) of the group each week were tasked with watching MOTD to write all the scores, assists, clean sheets etc you can imagine the arguments. I claimed the title of course courtesy of picking up wilcox and ripley for peanuts, nice.

We did a slightly simplified version at school whereby you bid for one goalkeeper, one defence and then as many outfield players as the rest of you budget would stretch to (0.5m minimum price). I seem to remember someone getting Matt Le Tissier for an absolute steal.

Each week you then won or lost based on goals scored vs conceded by those teams/players.

You could transfer players between yourselves as you wished or sell them back to the pool for a trivial value.

New players could be bid for but everyone had to be notified to make it fair. Someone bought Jean-Pierre Papin as they heard he was going to sign. Muppet!

      Heady days. 🙂

Just to add to the comments - 1st one was at School called Dream League and that was in 1991/92 season. Again auction the players with your $100 and you got a point for every goal scored by an outfield player and conceded a point for every goal just your keeper let in. If you had any dollard left (despite this being in England) you could try and buy players off any of the other players. We did over the 4 leagues and Dave Bamber at Blackpool was pretty prolific which would also have been the time of Steve Bull and Andy Mutch at Wolves.

Fantasy premier league is better but the main plus from the old game is only one team could own a certain player, compared to the current everyone having RVP. Each goal meant a point for you only. Blimey 21 seasons ago.

If, as you think it's Plath + Hughes or even Orwell. It's not a balanced selection.

Plath prob best paired with someone like Andrew motion - flacid, moribund and perfectly safe.

I honestly have never seen Manonne play, but I have seen Zsezzny play and I don't like him.

I swear the fact that my Euro 2012 partner(read loser) had in and another keeper play on the same day has nothing to do with my feeling about him.

Neither does the fact that he looks like my wife's boyfriend she dumped.

I think he is far better than ddg if this counts for anything .

World class is something that is hard to define but of the keepers of his generation I don't see many better? Possibly hart but even then he has a lot better team in front of him, put him behind the arsenals team and see how well he does!

The problem for all keepers imo is that we mainly see their mistakes highlighted.
1 error means no CS for FF players

Strikers on the other hand have their relatively few successes highlighted.

Fun fact windmill. The world flange (non slang) was "coined" by none other than John Winston Lennon, when talking about a new guitar sound, he called it Flange-y. And the musical term was born.

"Bacary Sagna to L'Équipe—"When you see your two best players leave [Alex Song and Robin van Persie], you do begin to ask yourself questions. Everyone [at the club] was expecting Van Persie to leave, but Song's departure was a shock. I still cannot understand it. I can see why the fans are so irate. Shedding them [Van Persie and Song] is a huge loss for the club. Our players are sensitive too. Alex was sold off age just 24 and with three years still left to run on his contract. Why? I watched the Manchester City parade on television. I saw Nasri and Clichy lift the [Premier League] trophy. I want that. Yes, I believe they [Nasri and Clichy] were right to leave Arsenal [in search of silverware], but we didn't know it then."

What's your situation: 'I've 1 yr left at end of season' Sagna is asked by L'Equipe if the club have spoken to him about extending his contract: 'No, nobody'

See you later then Bakary. Sounds like Walcott and Sagna could both be off come the end of the season.

The longer the lack of silver there is the worse this will become.

As a neutral observer (forest fan) I admire what arsenal do. It's a sustainable well run football club. It's always competitive despite not spending stupid amounts. Just because some clubs (man u, Chelsea, man city) spend ridiculous amounts of money and run at a loss that doesn't make that strategy right does it?

Please refer to me as Martin, or Mr.Unreal if you must.

I'll get him in somehow if he scores another hat-trick, and then you'll be happy and he'll miss 5 penalties in one match after I captained him.

Casillas had a good Euros but I think it's fair to say that Iraizoz has been better than him over the last season or 2 in La Liga, although in fairness Iraizoz has a lot more saves to make than Casillas because of what's in front of him, so it's an unfair advantage to Iraizoz in that regard.

Transfer market is probably too slow. If you'd had Jenkinson last night you might have stood a chance. Outside chance of Winston Reid or possibly McAuley but I doubt it.

But why do you need them to rise by this weekend? It's all one gameweek until 15th Sep.

I'm not sure about that ( I own a Rafael) . This works in theory BUT
          1) It's risky for that price.

          2) With CL games etc, I can see Jones / Smalling doing a job there too, esp in the PL.

I like the unpredictability and extra points, but I can't justify tying up those funds at this stage. Makes him more kolorov-ish to me, and I think it may be best moving on once genuine mid/high price assets start to score (even now, Baines, Gibbs, Rangel etc could be a more effective use of funds).

Looking to bring in a cheap defender to free up money for a Cazorla or Ben Arfa purchase next week. Do I go for:

Guy Demel £4.1m (doesn't score many, nailed on to play, decent fixtures)
Alex Pearce £4.4m (significant goal/assist threat from set pieces, first teamer)
Ian Harte £4.4m (rotation risk but obvious set piece threat)
Kaspar Gorkss £3.9m (another risk from set pieces, cheap)
Ciaran Clark £4.4m (good scoring record, Villa look vulnerable defensively)

The advantage with the Reading players is that have the postponed Sunderland game in hand. Any advice greatly appreciated.

You can see England's squad v Moldova but no one anywhere on the internet appears to have posted Moldova's squad.

It was sent to UEFA by a lovely carrier pigeon by the name of Speckled Jim which was subsequently shot and eaten.

Does this mean we win by default?

It's probably too late or dangerous to send a carrier pigeon back to tell them to resubmit their squad.

Or a squad. They'll pick em from the crowd before kick off.

FWIW, I liked your other grav... but I don't want to know which family member that is!

A frontline of RVP - Tevez - Adebayor is tempting me. Cripples the rest of the team though.

But if they bring the points in, well worth it. 3 captain options

Not really. It would mean no Bale or Santi.

It would mean no Baines, and going for Dyer over Michu. 3, 4s in defence.

You can get Santi, Adebayor, Hazard, RVP, Tevez and Baines into a team as long you don't mind some crappers in the rest of the mid.

My thoughts exactly. I can manage it if i have two 4.5m rotating mids though...

        I've got to this.

        Foster Begovic
Davies Gorkks Demel (10.5 for 2)
Cazorla Hazard Ben Arfa Dyer Guthrie
        Tevez RVP Adebayor.

I can't bring myself to get rid of Baines or Cazorla though. I think Adebayor is just too destructive to fit in. It's like your team is getting kicked in the nuts: http://tinyurl.com/cdxl4x7

I could get Baines into this team by:

            Ben Arfa > Nolan
            Foster > Jaask
            Demel > Baines
            10.5 = S.Taylor & Cueller.

So the defence wouldn't be that bad.

              Saylor + Cuellar = 9.5?

Don't lose Foster, or at least get a WBA def for 5m then.

It's not bad. But is it going to get more points than getting Lambert over Ade, and stronger mids?
