Vito Mannone is determined to nail down the Arsenal number one spot. Brendan Rodgers could be set to welcome back Joe Cole and Oussama Assaidi, Jimmy Kebe expects to be back training within two weeks for Reading, James Perch may be available for Newcastle’s Gameweek 4 trip to Everton, while Goran Popov is keen to earn a permanent move to West Brom…

Vito Mannone is determined to shrug off the challenge of Wojciech Szczesny in the battle for Arsenal’s number one jersey. Farmed out to Hull on loan last season, Mannone racked up a club record six clean sheets – a key factor in his recent performances, he explains:

“I have improved in every part of the goalkeeper position. In my mind as well, I came back stronger and stronger. It is a good fight between the keepers because we know the level is quite high and you need to keep working and improve yourself to get the first spot. The best thing was playing senior football and playing consecutive games and getting the mentality of the number one. When you are number one, you feel important and like the happiest man in the world, that sort of feeling gives me the chance to go onto the pitch with confidence. I would like to be involved more and more and establish myself.”

Certainly, the Italian has staked a strong claim to continue between the sticks for the Gameweek 4 visit of Southampton. Since stepping in for Szczesny, Mannone has racked up back-to-back clean sheets away to Stoke and Liverpool and, with the Gunners the only side yet to concede this season, the Arsenal defence is generating plenty interest right now. Szczesny is expected to be fit for the Saints match, handing Arsene Wenger a real selection headache – if Mannone continues ahead of the Pole, he looks an intriguing option at 4.5 in FPL and 4.1 in the Sky Sports game. Wenger’s team sheet for the clash could well give us more to go on if both keepers are fit.

Brendan Rodgers could be set to welcome Joe Cole and Oussama Assaidi to Liverpool’s first-team squad for the Gameweek 4 trip to Sunderland. The Liverpool boss gave an injury update on the pair’s progress yesterday:

“Joe is working well and the medical department are pleased with his progress. He was out onto the pitch over the weekend doing some work so there’s still a little way to go with Joe yet but he’s on the right track. He (Assaidi) was due to play in the reserve game, but after training he felt a little bit of tightness. We’re hoping in the next couple of days he’ll be ready to train and rejoin the group.”

Cole has been missing since limping out of the season opener at West Brom within 11 minutes of coming on as a sub, while Assaidi has yet to feature since moving from Dutch outfit Heerenveen – with Stewart Downing out of form, Raheem Sterling has started the last two. One of the few positives in a poor start to the season, the 17-year-old has started to pick up interest due to his cut-price valuation across the Fantasy games but Assaidi, in particular, looks the likeliest to rival him for game time – with a similarly pacey and direct style of play from the left, his attacking threat could well prove vital as Rodgers looks for goals to halt the Reds’ stuttering start to the campaign.

Remaining in the Liverpool camp, and Jose Enrique has spoken out about the competition from Stewart Downing for his left-back role, revealing some significant tactical insights in the process…

“With the way we intend to play, that is with the right-back and left-back attacking, Stewart can fit in well…The manager wants me to make more assists and score more goals and play more like a forward. He has told Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly to do the same and Stewart Downing in the left-back role.â€

For Fantasy managers, there is significance in Enrique’s statement that again suggests that we will see increased attacking returns from Liverpool’s full-backs under Brendan Rodgers. We’re yet to see this materialise and, given Liverpool’s stuttered start to the season, few are likely to take an early gamble. However, clearly the tactics are in place to see the full-backs come into the equation more often in attacking terms.

James Perch is hopeful of a return to action for Newcastle’s Gameweek 4 trip to Everton. With Danny Simpson all but ruled out due to a hamstring injury and Ryan Taylor facing months on the sidelines with a knee injury, Perch is expected to take up the right-berth berth, providing he recovers in time from a neck problem. Cheick Tiote’s imminent return could see Vernun Anita cover in defence if required, though – the summer signing from Ajax filled in for Simpson against Villa at the weekend, having started the game in midfield due to the Ivorian’s absence.

West Brom new boy Goran Popov has spoken of his delight at moving to the Hawthorns on loan and is already determined to seal a permanent move to the in-form midlands outfit:

“I am so happy that I came here. I have signed a contract and hope that after this first year I will sign for two or three more.”

The left-back’s arrival has the potential to scupper many a Fantasy plan right now. With the Baggies registering clean sheets in both their home matches thus far, and with three of their next four at the Hawthorns looking favourable (RDG, QPR, SOT), the likes of Gareth McAuley and Liam Ridgewell have been subject to plenty investment. If Popov ousts Ridgewell from his current left-back berth, however, the former Birmingham man is likely to battle it out with McAuley for a spot at centre-half – until Clarke’s intentions become clearer, it may well be that Jonas Olsson offers the safest route into the back-four right now, with Ben Foster’s saves points furthering the keeper’s case between the sticks. Certainly, it’s a situation worth monitoring – Popov is priced at just 4.5 in FPL and could well offer the best value route into the Baggies defence if he establishes himself as a first-team regular.

Jimmy Kebe handed Reading a boost yesterday by announcing he should be back training within a couple of weeks. The Royals winger took to twitter to reveal:

“Doctor seen this morning for an injection on my hamstring…it’s getting better though, should be back for training in 10 days hopefully.”

Yet to feature in his side’s two games this season due to a hamstring problem, Kebe’s absence afforded Garath McCleary a chance to benefit in the previous match at Chelsea. The former Forest man provided an assist for Pavel Pogrebnyak in the 4-2 defeat at the Bridge but despite his promising start, could well be set to drop out upon Kebe’s return. While the injured winger has now slipped to 4.9 in FPL, Danny Guthrie is now as low as 4.4 and, playing as the most advance central midfielder in a 4-4-1-1, the latter is far and away the most popular midfielder amongst Brian McDermott’s side right now.

Elliot Ward has been left out of Norwich’s 25-man squad for the Premier League campaign. The centre-half missed the start of the season due to a leg problem but has slipped down the pecking order following the signings of Seb Bassong and Michael Turner over the summer. Ward had offered a cheap potential route into the Canaries backline but is now unavailable until the New Year at least – with fellow cut-price option Marc Tierney losing his left-back role to Javier Garrido, it leaves Leon Barnett as the cheapest alternative. Priced at 4.0 in FPL, he has quickly ousted Turner from the heart of defence after the latter’s dire display in the 5-0 defeat at Fulham in Gameweek 1 – Barnett has struck up a solid partnership with Bassong, helping Chris Hughton’s side bounce back and concede just twice in the subsequent two Gameweeks.

Jenkinson will only be playing for a couple more games, Sagna will take his place.
Don't like having both Guthrie and Pog. Maybe try to find money for Nolan.
      Otherwise looks solid

Thanks for your advice! I also find two Arsenal defenders to be a little too much due to pretty hard upcoming fixtures. Only have 0,6 left, so need to find a decent alternative for Jenkinson that costs no more than 5,3 then. I choosed to have both Guthrie and Pog because of very low cost and a fair chance to get some points too 🙂

Think Juusi + Bego is a better GK option.

Maybe change Vermaelen and Gorkss to 2 5.0s (Ridgewell, McAuley, Steven Taylor, etc) and upgrade Pogrebnyak to someone like Lambert? Just a thought..

Quick 4.5m Defender Question : Do people think it would be better to go for a) Bertrand and risk him not starting each week - even though, if he did, he'd likely be OOP or b) say Cuellar or Figueroa, safe in the knowledge that they're nailed-on ?
(rest of the backline is Baines, Rafael, Harte & Demel)
    Any answer appreciated. Ta.

im even heavier invested than u in df with verm + ivan, n hv demel n clyne as 4.0 n calrk 4.4
defo starters...as said subject to crazy rotation( e.g only home with soft opposition)
prefer wing back to DC in most cases as they have more attacking point potential
n most importantly..i hate seeing big money warming up my bench.
+ surely the extra 0.5 will help u upgrade more important berths in ur team

if ur not happy iwth rafael try spending that extra 0.5 on him...rather than a bench warmer

Tempted by Bertrand at 4.5m myself. Thought the first game was a one-off, but after he played the 3rd game too, perhaps he may be used a little more often. To add to this Bertrand has signed a new 4-yr deal, Cole has only been offered a 1yr deal which he is unhappy with and it seems Malouda is out of favour.

4.5 for a Chelsea defender isn't that bad IF he gets the games. The alternatives are a load of rubbish too at that price, with the exception of Jenkinson, who may only have a few games left, but 4.5 for Bertrand and Jenkinson and 5.0 for Gallas, is a very cheap way of getting cover for Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham defence. The big worry is all three missing the same week.

To go even further - add Clark 4.4 and Rafael 5.6 then £24m gets a decent back five from Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Villa and United and hope three always make it.

It's amazing, whenever someone suggests something away from the norm you get shot down. I'm not saying keep Jenkinson when Sagna starts playing and I'm not saying keep Rafael if it's obvious he is out of favour, but I think I've made a reasonable case for suggesting Bertrand may get starts and Gallas is captain while Parker is out. So for now the five I mentioned is an option and I threw it out there.

I guess really I should just say Cuellar at 4.5m and watch the boring 1pt and 2pt returns drift in, but hey he's popular on here and could help others consolidate a ranking of around 300,000.

sorry mate - my comment was tongue in cheek - but I think 2 rotation risks are the absolute limit - Jeez I'm petrified of just having the one (Rafael) and will probably bottle that once Jones, Smalling, et al are fit again.

This passage from today's scout scribbles has reeked havoc on my WC plans!

"If Popov ousts Ridgewell from his current left-back berth, however, the former Birmingham man is likely to battle it out with McAuley for a spot at centre-half – until Clarke’s intentions become clearer, it may well be that Jonas Olsson offers the safest route into the back-four right now"

Ok, it wouldn't be that bad, but it's led me to question whether McCauley is in fact nailed on. I got him in for the price rises and now I'm considering sticking with a WBA defender. Question is; would it be worth getting Olsson and saving a bit of cash? Is this really the case with the WBA defence?

      Foster is the safest choice.

If you want a full 90, I'd personally go for Torres. Lamps will play so Hazard won't be on pens again.......but I'd still take the gamble and go for Kagawa......Fergie can't KEEP taking him off can he ?........mind you, everyone was creaming themselves over Scholes at St Mary's so there is a chance that he might not start at all.......so go Torres for safety ; Kagawa if you're feeling lucky (punk !)

Lamps might get rested after having played 2 int. games, and i reckon there will be goals in the chelsea game. Have to choose between torres and hazard. Thanks for your suggestions mate.

Sagna saying things like that surely won't harm his gametime, right? They're all professionals and Wenger is practically a robot.

i.e. Jenkinson is still for the chop sooner rather than later, right?

Dunno. In any even I'd argue sooner = gw5/6 at the earliest.

Dunno when the interview was done. Not a surprise to see off-message quotes coming from Fance.

Bacary was clearly valued as highly as the others who have left. He is a senior member. If he leaves, it wil be 2013 most likely with the robot's blessing.

The closer to the thruth this is, the better for Jenkinson imo.

    Jaask Begovic
    Davies Gorkks S.Taylor Cueller Baines
    Cazorla Hazard Nolan Guthrie Dyer
    Tevez Ade RVP

Not sure if i'll go for it though, i liked having Michu and Ben Arfa.

Right, just a fun game to fill the international break. Pick 11 players (no subs) for the Moldova v England match. Normal FPL formations and scoring. No bonus points. Goals/assists decided by Press Association or me if they say nothing.

Yes I'm not kidding you can pick Moldovan players. That's what extreme valour is all about.

Enter your team before 6pm Friday - guessing the lineup is part of the challenge. Scores to be posted the night of the game.

    ENGLAND

    GK: Hart, Butland, Ruddy
DEF: Baines, Bertrand, Cahill, Jagielka, Johnson, Lescott, Terry, Walker
MID: Carrick, Cleverley, Ox, Gerrard, Lampard, Milner, Walcott
    FWD: Defoe, Sturridge, Welbeck

MOLDOVA (no squad posted due to the country not having internet, have used recent callup list off Wikipedia)

    GK: Calancea, Matyugin
DEF: Epureanu, Armas, Bordian, Bolohan, Cascaval, Cheltuiala, Boret, Savinov
MID: Gatcan, Zmeu, Onica, Cojocari, Andronic, Suvorov, Cheptine, Gheorghiev

Same - I want Arsenal defence but I really couldn't cope with the stress of Koscielny waiting in the wings to piss on my chips. Best stress-free option right now seems to be Gibbs (if you can't afford Verm). Maybe straight swap to Sagna later for added threat.

Jenks is cheaper. Koscielny is already fit. I think Jenks is a fine choice and can be swapped for a 5.5 or a 4.0 with minimum fuss.

In the short term, I think it's pretty basic. ARS def so you can play him every week if you like. Or bench him until you're ready to swap.

    Evening all

So, I was having a tinker this morning and came up with this wild card team. I didn't have a particular plan to push the button but I'm kind of considering it now, as I have exactly enough money to do it -

    Foster Begovic

    Ridgewell Baines Rangel Cellular Demel

Hazard Ben Arfa Guthrie Michu Cazorla

    Tevez Lambert RVP

That's seven changes from what I have now. Stick or twist?

Also, Japan are playing UAE right now and Kagawa has not been injured yet. I'll repeat that, Kagawa not injured yet.

    Cheers

Not sure myself, I just rather like that team and want to clear out the rotation risks and the just plain neither use nor ornament. Also, it allows me to keep HBA & Baines, and gives 4 good captain choices - RVP / Cazorla and Tevez / Hazard, depending on fixtures.

        Kagawa not injured yet.

Nice team McEwan. I've bottled making early transfers, just in case of injury. Since the prices don't change and I'm not planning on dying anytime in the next week or so, I'll hold fire and do them on the Friday.

I of course did the maximum five teams so have thirty players to find.

Looking at the Scout picks for week 3:
    Vorm
    Boyce Saylor Kompany Baines
    Barfa Michu Kagawa Bale
    RVP Tevez
    Demel Nolan Graham

The total value of all these should exceed 100m by far...can a pick be so crappy like this?

    Why don't they just pick:
    Hart
    Verm Kompany Baines
    Hazard Michu Cazorla Kagawa Bale
    RVP Tevez Torres
    Sub DDG Vidic Ivanovic Evra

So that the Scout Pick can score over 100 points every gameweek.

Form and fixtures are taken into account rather than just the best players on the highest teams. Wouldn't be much point in posting a new one each week if that was the case. The main reason is to highlight differential players and in form players that would return at least an over-average team

The problem here is, given that you only have 101-103mil to purchase 15 players, is a list of players who will 100% play very well really useful to you, if they cost you 104mil? I know form and fixtures are very important, but I would say the key is to optimize gamepoints within your budget.

Point here is, it is a list of players that should play well in the eyes of the scout. But ironically, no one can afford the list.

Thus the list is pointless even though the total points generated from those players are the same as the dream team even every week.

Sorry but defence, goalkeeper and 4.4 striker has to change.

I'd be inclined to downgrade Yaya to Nobleor someone cheap then upgrade to a Jaaskelainen, two 4.5 defenders and then a 6.0 striker (graham)

Better off with 2 x 4.5m keepers than Foster & £4m keeper for starters.

4.4m striker is a waste, at least find £0.5m more to get Pogrebnyak. N Dyer --> Guthrie gives you enough money for both but I think your defence is still too weak.

I got a FREIDEL problem. I got brad freidel from the start and i dont have a playing 2nd GK.(Daniels)
My rest defence is Ivanovic - Baines - Hangelaand
Is there a guarentee on freidel starting next GW ?Or should I ship him out?
If yes - then for who ? I got $ in the bank so no no problem.

Poor planning having non-playing back-up GK. Brad is likely to start against RDG, maybe QPR, but it's a matter of time before Hugo pops in. Lloris will possibly debut against Lazio in UEFA game sandwiched between RDG/QPR.

Think I read somewhere AVB had stated Friedel was number 1 for now. It was just after they had signed Lloris. I'd imagine the place is his until he messes up once and then it's the retirement Village for old Brad.

      No problem here.

He WILL start the next game.

After that, he will get dropped soon.

      Just get a new keeper.

Go to keepers, filter your price, then select the one that has easy fixtures & most likely to keep clean sheets.

She doesn't look the type of girl that could make a nice Sunday dinner or scull back a few cans of dutch gold - for that I must say "pass" 😛

That's no way to talk about a 4.6m Fulham midfielder - Hangeland's got a bigger arse - and Jol's bangers are WAY better........
