Gameweek four concludes tonight at Goodison Park, as Everton play host to Newcastle United. The Dugout Discussion opens to see two sides with high ambitions for the season tussle it out. The team news is in and is as follows…

Everton XI: Howard, Hibbert, Jagielka, Distin, Baines, Mirallas, Neville, Osman, Pienaar, Fellaini, Jelavic.

Newcastle XI: Harper, Perch, Williamson, S Taylor, Santon, Anita, Cabaye, Gutierrez, Marveaux, Ben Arfa, Cisse.

David Moyes makes two changes from the side that suffered defeat at the hands of West Brom in matchday three, with Tony Hibbert and Kevin Mirallas starting in place of Darron Gibson and Steven Naismith.

As for the visitors, Steve Harper replaces the injured Tim Krul, and James Perch and Mike Williamson patch up the defence in the absence of Danny Simpson and Fabricio Coloccini. Slyvain Marveaux is a surprise inclusion, as Demba Ba drops to the bench.

The Dugout Discussion chatroom is open and can be accessed right here.

If Hangeland, no, I think his goal threat isn't well supported by his total FPL history. I think you can get more out of A if it's Schwarzer + Ridgewell - although the Popov factor needs to be monitored

Posted this up twice today, once in the morn, once in the afternoon. So last orders for anyone interested and i'm off to bed. Seems more even more relevant tonight. Anyways, night all.

Posted up a piece on the viability of an all mid priced forward line in the preseason before GW1. I won’t bore yous with it again, though will link if anyone is interested.

I suggested that a possible viable alternative this year could be to pick up a few mid priced forwards, such as Tevez, Ba, Jellyfish etc and use the additional funds saved to invest elsewhere in our squads. Basically the idea was that only 3 big forwards existed, Rooney, RVP and Aguero. Now imo, Rooney has showed previously he does not profit FPL wise when working with another world class striker (see previous seasons with Tevez/CR7). RVP has to average around 8 points per 90 played to justify his cost, and that is just about justifying it, so your already effectively paying for his upside. BTW, last season he averaged 8 points per 90P.

Now, if you think he can sustain those numbers this season, then he is probably worth it for the captaincy alone. But if you like me, think Rooney will take some of the limelight at some point or that others represent better value, then the mid priced striker route may be for you.

I think it is reasonable to say, Tevez, Berbatov, Fletcher, Ba, Podolski, Jelavic and Suerez all look good shouts for hitting double figures in goals this season and bringing some useful points per million spent for owners. Perhaps, great value in the cases of Tevez, Berba, Ba and Pod.

Now, issues to consider before jumping aboard this route is that a certain confidence will be needed to stick the armband on any of the big mids (Cazorla, Bale, Hazard etc) or one of your mid priced strikers. Id say if the fixtures and form suit, id feel comfortable with this, but others may seek the safety and explosiveness of RVP. Saying that, Tevez to date has being a very safe armband choice. Aguero coming back into town could change this and it remains to see if rotation will kick in later on in the season. Now for my money, Aguero is a great bet as a big striker, so that is a disclaimer right there.

Rather then pushing my warez or gloating, id like to think this post is for anyone WC or without RVP and considering there options. Imo, there is viable alternatives to the template squads so often posted on here. Easier to suggest after a weekend like last perhaps, but RVP will come good some days and you will just have to grin and bear it, hopefully the extra funds redistributed throughout your squad make the difference to close any gap on those weeks.

It’s a thought to consider at least.

Just a rough calculation without considering captaincy bonus. Assume budget of 100 and cost of 13. Then's he's 13% of your squad price. A score to aim for each GW is 60, hence he needs to score you 13% of that which is about 8 points. I consider the captaincy doubling to significantly weight the calculation in his favour and hence I got him.

7.5 was his average last season per 90 played, if being academic. So if he plays less then he did last year, which looks likely, his price becomes a sticking point, imo.

Good sensible post. Personally, I also came to the conclusion that RVP only made sense from the captain perspective, and decided it was top priority, hence I got him.

Captaincy. I know you refer to it, but you don't give it enough prominence.

      (c) is the most important thing in FPL. RVP and Tevez / Aguero gives perfect home / away rotation from the 2 teams that will score the most goals.

It is very important of course. If you believe RVP will keep up his averages of last season (7.5ish points per 90 played) then he is the real deal. Personally I think he might not play as many minutes as last season, probably around 30 games this season and this will in turn hamper his returns, which at 13m he really needs to be delivering.

        All imo of course.

Anyone thinking of selling RVP and Tevez?
They have CL football, which means they might be on the bench in the next few EPL fixtures
Rooney will be back from injury, and there's Welbeck and Chicharito.
Same for Tevez( Aguero back from injury, Dzeko and Balotelli)
    What do you think?

It's why RVP is massively overpriced... At least Tevez's price factored this in, before the Aguero injury sky-rocketed it... Kind of hate myself for bringing in RVP as said I wasn't going to bother... Now I have him, inertia says I'll keep him for a while.

After the year he had last year I think he was quite reasonably priced at 13.0 to start.

Was he overpriced last week when he had his hatty?

I think he is perfectly priced, if he gets as many mins as last season. But imo the other three strikers will take some minutes (see this week) off him, making it harder to get value for the money spent.

Personally ill wait and see for a bit on this one, cause United could improve his output per 90 played of course, better team then the gunners. Or he could get less minutes and find it hard to duplicate the same returns as last season with less games.

I could be very wrong of course, so all imo on this topic.

My team is suddenly in trouble.

    Jaask (Krul)
    Rangel, Hangeland, Coloccini (Fabio, Clyne)
    Hazard, Kagawa, Yaya, Michu (Noble)
    RVP, Tevez, Graham

    Advice?

I’m thinking Kagawa > Pienaar and Fabio -> Baines. That leaves me 0.1 in the bank.

Would like to get onto the Sterling and Berba bandwagon as well, but then it's serious hits territory. Have 2 FT right now though. But main priority should probably be Baines and Pienaar?
