A game of goals and controversy at Goodison Park brings Gameweek 4 to a conclusion. Here’s the Stock Check from the tonight’s tumultuous 2-2 stalemate…

On the Up

Leighton Baines
We could hardly have pushed the virtues of Baines any harder over the international break and the Everton left-back didn’t take long to demonstrate why. Linking superbly with Steven Pienaar, Baines covered himself in glory with a fine strike to cap another superb display.

Steven Pienaar
Two assists from the South African demonstrated his worth and effectiveness down the Everton left with Baines. Pienaar also threaded the pass for Victor Anichebe’s strike and was only denied further returns by the assistant’s flag. Significantly, despite strong returns from Marouanne Fellaini in the opening games, bonus for Pienaar would take him above the Belgian in the Fantasy Premier League rankings.

Demba Ba
The evening began with the Senegal striker on the timber, only for him to be introduced to turn the game in the second half. A rollercoaster evening for his 16% ownership that ended in confirmation that Ba is the man in form in the Newcastle frontline.

Going Down

Nikaca Jelavic
The Croatian crashed into a post early on and finally relented to the blow just before the break after suffering further knocks. Everton badly missed his influence in the second-half and David Moyes and Jelavic’s Fantasy owners will desperately hoping that he has escaped with a minor setback. We await the prognosis.

Papiss Cisse
Selected ahead of Ba to lead the line, Cisse was again overshadowed by his compatriot. His Fantasy owners will doubtless be twitching with frustration and mystified as to how Cisse’s strike rate has diminished so markedly given last season’s electric form.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

just messin with ya, you might get burned having Kaca on the bench though, if Berbatov scores a few he might be in with an assist or two again. It's very hard to bench your other players but I'd consider maybe Kaca over McClean/Yaya. It's pretty hard because of their respective prices though.

This is the wc team I have come up with-:

    Foster, Begovic
Rangel, Hughes, Demel, Taylor S, Baines
    Morrison, Michu, Piennar, Hazard, B.Arfa
    Ba, Tevez, Berbatov

    with 4.4 in the bank.

Before gw7, I plan to get Cazorla + an Arsenal defender (Verm/Sagna) for the two free transfers. Any other teams with favorable or difficult fixtures that I should be aware of?

I am fully aware about the lack of big hitters, but feel that for the next few weeks they should be adequate. RVP will return gracefully (or not) to by team by gw11.

Will get Caz for the worst performing midfielder out of the 5 in two weeks.

United. Chelsea defense is out of the question. City defense from gw7 looks a great option, but only Kompany is a viable option. Others are way too susceptible for Rotation. So it's gotta be Verm/Sagna for me but from gw7.

Defense rotation is way too over-rated....It's easy to decide who to play, but at the time of points, it never quite works out for me. I just prefer gk rotation, the other's I just take a chance on whom to sub. I strongly sense your upcoming disapproval though. 🙂

I'd go for Jaask and Begovic myself. Go with form.

Also, is the 0.2m for Rangel really worth it? Williams gets bonus too and is a threat at set pieces.

Don't like the strategy of that much money in the bank personally.

Stick with RVP. One gameweek where he's rested shouldn't be enough to deter you from one of the most reliable fantasy players in the game.

Would also prefer Sterling to Morrison to save the money, especially since you need a bench player.

        You thrive on RMT's, don't you? 🙂

Williams over Rangel sounds fair enough, as this is just a 4 week affair in my perspective.

Come gw7, there will only less than 1m in the bank. So it's just a matter of time.

I am not going to be giving RVP the armband in any of the next 6 weeks. Will just have to squeeze him in come gw11. But before that I believe he will get around 24-30 points in the next 6 gws. So it's a chance I am willing to take.

I am thinking the same about Sterling especially as I have someone who I can frequently bench......Just hope that he keeps getting the game-time.

        Thanks, again

Reposting my WC thoughts, and I'd like your opinion on this.
    A)
    Foster – Bego
    Baines – Saylor – Hughes – Demel – Rafael
    Michu – Carzola – Bale – Sterling – Hazard
    BA – Tevez – Berba
    OR
    B)
    Jussi – Bego
    Saylor – Ridgewell – Demel – Davies – Barnett
    Michu – HBA – Bale – Sterling – Hazard
    RVP – Tevez – Berba

    Saylor -> Hughes + HBA -> Carzola in GW7 aside from setbacks/inj.

B all the way, no idea why you’re debating it when with B you can have Bale/Hazard/Cazorla/RVP/Tevez all in the same team!

Also you'd still have 3 defenders in pretty strong defensive teams and the other 2 are just back up.

B is pretty good, very top heavy, but thats not a bad thing.

Only issue is that theres alot of us (myself included) putting alot of faith in defencive performance of teams like WBA and West Ham.....if the wheels come off those teams then we've got no where to go, especially given the WC's have been used....

Baines was the man when he was up against Marveaux in the 1st half, got nowhere near him. Gutierrez did a good job on his second half, should have been on him from the start, it was clear the left was their biggest threat.

Fair point, i don't think they used him enough 2nd half tho. Great game all the same.
@ Saints- Very unlucky not to win the game, just as wel I'm skint because I would have put a hefty wager on them winning tonight 🙂 , I'll take my 7 points for Baines and be happy with them 🙂

True, though that's partially just because they didn't dominate possession like they did in the 1st half.

Good point for us in the end, Everton got a couple of tough disallowed goal decisions but that's just how it is. We could have easily won as well if the ref had played advantage for the 3on1 after the over the line incident or if Cisse had taken a couple of his chances.

That was a total cop out, he played the odds. His thinking goes like this - OK if I got the goal line decision wrong and Toon score I'm fooked, if I got it right and give a foul here it's bad but not as bad!
Iv'e seen this guy have alot of really poor games, he really needs to improve or he should be turfed down to the Championship.

Baines looked terrific against Perch in the first half but a lot less effective against Aliva(sp?) in the second. The AR had a shocker; Fellaini was on and the Anichebe goal . . . was a goal. As an American, I have long thought it unfortunate that Friedel retired from international football - Howard is a terrific reaction GK but his postiioning is occasionally suspect as demonstrated on Ba's first goal. Wish Friedel was still the USA GK (sigh).

Personally would try to squeeze in Alves for a bit more over Vermaelen if it all possible.

Apart from GK, each area has some real nice looking players. Watch out for Ozil though, some doubt as to whether he's entirely secure with Modric around. Yes, Modric did sub on for him recently.

Right, the biggest question for me this GW is whether to reduce my triple Swans coverage for the visit of Everton.

Everton have defended solidly before. Unfortunately they lost Gibson early in the 2-0 defeat to West Brom and their defence hasn't looked anywhere near as well protected since (think Arteta's injury against Wigan last year and the effects it had on the Arsenal defence).

Should I stick with Rangel, Michu and Graham one more week?

Cuellar, Kagawa (and Graham) are my main question marks in that order pretty much, so maybe should wait.

Could save the transfer this week and use next week as the "judgement day week" when I make calls about the progress of my players and shift up to 3 for a 4 pointer.

Nice. Quite straightforward. I actually think Lescott is no more likely to pick up a CS home to Arsenal than Demel is for West Ham home to Sunderland, but it's unlikely you'll take the risk of benching him (or doubling on the West Ham defence - though Al-Habsi is an equally strong candidate at home for Wigan to Fulham in goal).

Ba (C) is looking seriously tempting.

A bit torn on Rangel BTW. I got him in in quite a different set of circumstances - specifically, before Naylor broke his ankle and Chico got sent off! Their defence looks shot to pieces. Worth shipping him out? A downgrade to Davies for the punt was on my mind, but his gametime looks uncertain long term.

        Original team was:

        DDG/Green
        Cole - Zab - Hangeland - Harte - Nelsen
        Michu - Hazard - Kagawa - Yaya - Noble
        Tevez - Adebayor - Pog

Doncastro - Who for if so? I do want some Everton coverage but at the expense of whom?

Baines – Barnett or McAuley – Gibbs, I would choose "A" Baines – Barnett

For HBA , and then get a better defense..

be careful on tevez, especially on WC. aguero is coming back. i guess unless you had him and reaped the benefits of his rise (myself not being one of them)

still like A with baines, but man hazard is taking alot of cash.....

Will definitely monitor the Tevez situation following the midweek CL game, still able to make changes. Yeah I had Aguero originally so I brought Tevez in at 9.1.

Only brought Hazard in the GW just gone (for Bale lol), and he's already been up by 0.4 since, would be priced out of him if I sold now, and so many have him.. plus I have no other Chelsea coverage.

If I ran with Pienaar instead of HBA, the defence looks like this with 1.5m to spend:

        McAuley - Gibbs - Hughes - Demel - Nelsen

Which teams do you think I'm sorely lacking in, Spurs?

I wouldnt go with both Jask and Demel. Ditch either . If you ditch Jask get a keeper than rotates well with Bego or get 2 new keepers. If you ditch Demel just get whoever you fancy. Like any team you decide without Baines tbh. cos youre defense is too crap otherwise if you choose all these high cost mid and attackers.

Also I notice you mention Spurs, Assou Akotto is probably gonna be out for what will be 4 weeks if he gets his knee ''washed out'' (whatever that means!!!), watch that space.. cos you can get in Naughton then who is only 4.4

Only problem there is cost, I could upgrade JJ to Foster I guess, but it would probably have to come from defence again to justify the attack.

I'm thinking that too, Baines seems really good but it hits my defence quite badly if so.

I've been thinking of a few ideas:

            1:

            Begovic/JJ

            McAuley/Hughes/Baines/Demel/Nelsen

Potential problem here is double Everton coverage, but they do have fantastic fixtures coming up.. I have looked at fixtures and I should be able to scrape a back 3 with decent fixtures each week for a while.

            2:

            No Baines

            Foster - Bego

            McAuley - Rangel - Saylor - Demel - Nelsen

Problem here is double WBA coverage, 0.9 in the bank though, basic plan was to play the two good Newcastle fixtures, then swap Saylor out for Gibbs/Sagna. Once Swansea's good fixtures were done I'd bring in a United def. Would still have double WBA though.

Mind you, I could swap McAuley out for Naughton and it gives me 6m to play with when I want to replace him..

The Baines side? I can afford it, defence is pretty pathetic barring him though.
