A game of goals and controversy at Goodison Park brings Gameweek 4 to a conclusion. Here’s the Stock Check from the tonight’s tumultuous 2-2 stalemate…

On the Up

Leighton Baines
We could hardly have pushed the virtues of Baines any harder over the international break and the Everton left-back didn’t take long to demonstrate why. Linking superbly with Steven Pienaar, Baines covered himself in glory with a fine strike to cap another superb display.

Steven Pienaar
Two assists from the South African demonstrated his worth and effectiveness down the Everton left with Baines. Pienaar also threaded the pass for Victor Anichebe’s strike and was only denied further returns by the assistant’s flag. Significantly, despite strong returns from Marouanne Fellaini in the opening games, bonus for Pienaar would take him above the Belgian in the Fantasy Premier League rankings.

Demba Ba
The evening began with the Senegal striker on the timber, only for him to be introduced to turn the game in the second half. A rollercoaster evening for his 16% ownership that ended in confirmation that Ba is the man in form in the Newcastle frontline.

Going Down

Nikaca Jelavic
The Croatian crashed into a post early on and finally relented to the blow just before the break after suffering further knocks. Everton badly missed his influence in the second-half and David Moyes and Jelavic’s Fantasy owners will desperately hoping that he has escaped with a minor setback. We await the prognosis.

Papiss Cisse
Selected ahead of Ba to lead the line, Cisse was again overshadowed by his compatriot. His Fantasy owners will doubtless be twitching with frustration and mystified as to how Cisse’s strike rate has diminished so markedly given last season’s electric form.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Morning!

Everton game was 2 am here and it was too late to watch. From match report, I don't see it mentions much about Ben Arfa. Could anyone please comment how he was last night?

Looked decent, almost scored but good save from Howard. Tough game up against Everton backline but he did well.

actually, upon reading b2bb's post he had a good second half. more to do with pardew's tactical reshuffle than any degree of heightened application tho, i'd think

Yep it's the tactical reshuffle which improved the team which improved Barfa. Newcastle were totally overrun in the first half; it was hard for Barfa to do much when he was almost never getting the ball. I definitely saw enough from him in the second to be happy keeping him.

Yeah I'd say now is the time, particularly as they host Norwich next. Ben Arfa spends so much time playing in a front three that I see him as basically out of position and his dribbling threat is only matched by Suarez in my view, though his shooting is better.

He was invisible in the first half but had a good second half. In on goal with a 1v1 with Howard but denied by a terrific save. Had 2 crosses which created half chances. Make it a 5.5/10.

@Isacki - Get rid of Kagawa for Morrison/Piennar, and try to have the funds necessary to upgrade one of the midfielders to Caz by gw7.

Don'tcha worry Caz for GW7/8 is the plan, I will do that by whatever means necessary.

Can't face losing Kags yet without giving him a proper go, especially as I judge this GW's resting of him and RVP to be a one-off. Inclined to keep him for the Liverpool game, particularly in light of Pool's poor defence. I can see Kags thriving in the space between the dodgy back four and the dodgy mid three... which just happens to sit behind a dodgy front three 😉

Also, this GW looks fairly tough for Pienaar away to Swansea so not too tempted on him this GW. Morrison at home to Reading, yes, but taking Kags out for that is too risky for me.

Does your defense (McAuley/Hughes/Demel/Nelsen rotate well ? Because 2 of those crap defenders have to start every week. I might use the 1.5 in the bank to pick up a MUN/MNC/CHE/ARS defender. Or drop Hazard for Mata/Lampard and pick up some cash for a defender upgrade.

          Was thinking of this:

          McAuley - Rangel - Saylor - Demel - Nelsen

Don't use a transfer next week.

Then switch out Saylor for Gibbs as the Arsenal fixture list picks up (long term), and Rangel for Hughes. sot/VIL/rea/EVE

Then 4 games later Hughes for a United defender, maybe Ferdinand as their fixtures finally clear up from there.

Berbs away to Wigan is gonna be a huge deciding point for the future of his bandwagon. If we get the slightest sniff Fulham & him can deliver away, he's gonna explode. Even if he doesn't, people may still be tempted on the home form.

Ye, you're right about that, if he scores then it most certainly is into over-drive. Another .3m rise for sure even if it's Man City next. This is what I'm dreading, Not to be too selfish about it but I really want to get him in after the City match and I'm praying he's not over 7.5 by then.

Actually I don't mind if he scores a hat-trick in the city game as long as he stays quiet at Wigan...if he gets a goal this weekend the bandwagon will reach epic levels I can guarantee that. It's funny the appeal of some players, Fletcher has effectively had the same explosive start but no-one's as interested because he plays for a less stylish team and is just simply less effortlessly cool than Berbatov, plus Berb's got the history and the flair factor.

Yep I'm actually far more enthusiastic about Fletcher than Berbatov because he has all that service behind him and a terrific conversion rate. Lots of crosses for a guy who's great in the air.

Sunderland's fixtures are good to average, the game away to City is a bit of a turnoff (though I believe it finished 3-3 last year LOL) but some tricky ones there. Almost sold on Fletcher, but that is niggling at me.

Sunderland have one of the lowest possession percentage and chance creation in the league. Whereas Fulham is the opposite.

True, but Sunderland's fixtures so far have been undoubtedly harder than Fulham's and there's still doubts about Fulham away, who failed to score against West Ham. Fletcher's scored 3 goals in 2 goals, 2 were away in traditionally tough Swansea and 1 was at home to Liverpool. He's got Sess, McClean, Larsson and Johnson (injury pending) behind him. It's just a different style - crosses - and he's made for it.

Let's be fair though, Berbatov is probably an OK value up to 8.0 with Fulham if he can score the odd away goal. So it's probably OK to wait on Berbatov a week or 2 to see what he does at Wigan.

Wigan have 1 CS in 2 against teams they are competing against (SOT/STK) and 2 big losses to top 4 sides (MUN/CHE). Wigan had 8 CS last year. And now they have FUL who historically are awful away. Wigan "bad as pants" not how I would characterize Wigan at home against a midtable team.

on a more serious not even though petric needs to be replaced, dropping ivanovic on this form is surely not the right way to go. besides gibbs have two tough fixtures next up and you will be making this transfer purely to facilitate petric to berba/fletch.

Baines may have prompted me to push the big WC button. With his fixtures coming up and rotation in the citeh ranks he appears to be at the start of a promising run whereas Zab looks to be in trouble. My defence is soo bad I'm not sure its worth painstakingly making small changes over multiple weeks and falling down the ranks as a result. I think the decision is made.
