We bring Gameweek 4 to a close with our usual synopsis, which this week finds us drooling over the class of an old favourite, reviving the fortunes of North London assets and berating the whims of the Old Trafford schemer.

The Player

There were other contenders but, as almost 80,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will testify, Dimitar Berbatov proves irresistible.

It wasn’t only his two goals that leads to his rise in prominence, or the fact that he was handed spot-kick duties. It’s not necessarily even his modest price tag that sparks the appeal. For me, it’s the nature of Berbatov’s performance against West Brom which proves so convincing.

Martin Jol knows exactly how to work with Berbatov’s talents. How to keep him in areas when he can taunt and punish opponents. The Bulgarian had plenty of the ball but didn’t have to come looking for it – Fulham kept him fed and allowed him to patrol the final third with menace. Berbatov duly returned two strikes and put in a shift that indicated he will be the fulcrum of the Cottagers’ attacking endeavours. Goals, assists and bonus points look assured – all should be delivered in quantities to more than justify his current price tag.

The Team

For the second week running, Arsenal impressed and hinted that they could yet play a part in the title race. In Fantasy terms, however, it was perhaps Tottenham’s victory at Reading that proved most significant.

Andre Villas-Boas has had his critics – a section of which seem so dismissive of his methods and appear to be willing him to fail following his demise at Stamford Bridge. The Spurs boss has bravely kept Emmanuel Adebayor’s ego in check, however, allowing Jermain Defoe to flourish and it was the latter’s goals that won the game and the plaudits at the Madejski.

Snuggled in the mid-price bracket, Defoe is a Fantasy asset that few will trust, given a streaky past and a lack of security. There’s little doubt that he is a striker in form, however, and a marksman of proven pedigree. A start against QPR looks certain and it will surely be Defoe who will carry the main threat to Mark Hughes’ men as Villas-Boas goes in search of a first home win since arriving at the Lane.

Equally, Fantasy managers will have be alerted to Gareth Bale’s strike – a first goal of the season that at last saw the Welshman deliver on his promise and price tag, offering a viable alternative to the current “template” midfields. Many have lost faith in Bale, as they have his manager, but there was plenty on show on Sunday to suggest that this is ill-advised.

The Talking Point

Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to rest Robin Van Persie to the bench for the home clash with Wigan rattled many. Not least me.

While some soothsayers called it correctly, I never really considered that United had quite found the gears to take on Wigan without Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and even the creativity of Shinji Kagawa. The 4-0 scoreline proved me wrong but, more significantly, gave Ferguson the comfort of knowing that such a gamble can be made again.

Wigan are, after all, no mugs and yet United brushed them aside in a stirring second-half; the “old spice” of Paul Scholes complimented by a sweeping new fragrance provided by Nick Powell.

The worry is that as United make progress in the Champions League and when Rooney finds form and fitness, the urge to rest Van Persie could flood through Ferguson’s veins more frequently. Far too frequently for the liking of the Dutchman’s ever-growing Fantasy ownership.

Seven days ago Van Persie graced this article and already looked untouchable. A Fantasy asset above all others. He still is just that but now, thanks to Ferguson’s slippery strategising, there are new question marks hanging over the value he can deliver, with a threat of rest and rotation blighting his potential prior to every European excursion. It’s unsettling.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

"By running simulations based on the results of previous seasons of fantasy football, the three computer scientists behind the software found that against the league's 2.5 million human participants in 2010, it would have beaten all but 2,500 people.

Now they are working on beating the final one per cent, IEEE Spectrum reported. And this season they hope to test the software in a live fantasy football competition.

They hope that once the programme is perfected, it can be put to life-saving solutions in the real world."

    ------
Jigsaw, my take on this . 1% of 2.5 million is 25000, so unless this is a classic typo, humans except those who post here and play FF are still STOOPID.

      You've got keeper issues.

I'd do NZog to Pienaar probably. I suppose Dembele's an option. Michu too.

But the lack of a keeper is the biggest concern. Otherwise fairly shipshape.

    Morning all. How's everyone going?

Ok so for those Everton Fans, or anyone who watched the game v NC. How was Kevin Mirallas? His raw stats indicate he saw plenty of opportunities. Considering him for Petric, as I have HBA & don't want to double with Ba. Not sure on Berbs next 2 fixtures. Need EVE coverage. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Didn't Mirallas just say, himself, that he needed another 2-3 games for fitness? I thought I saw something to that effect somewhere. That might be something to look out for before transferring in ...

    Demba Ba Vs Papiss Cisse

What a differnce 6 months makes. I recall Ba leaving for ACON and everyone could harldy wait for him to come back and put him straight into their squad. Once most of us jumped on the Ba bandwagon, only to soon realize that Cisse would take over as the dominating attacking force for Toon. This season, however Ba is leading the attack 3G to 0. What has changed????

Honestly, I think it's mostly luck. Cissé was in incredible form last year but he was getting about as many chances as Ba, even though Ba was deployed as the left wing. This year Ba has converted his chances and Cissé hasn't. It will probably change at some point but I sure won't want to pay a 1.5 million premium to own Cissé

I think Ba has got angry, he's got mean again, he even said in an interview he was bemused to be benched by Pardew, and Pardew said he doesn't mind his frustration because players can perform better sometimes when they're angry and have a point to prove. It's worked that way so far! I think Ba might have just been sick of Cisse being seen as the better out and out striker so he's proving his point.

Realistically though, I think it's to do with a tactical shift and perhaps Ba realising Cisse is slightly off form/not fulfilling his potential. If Ba can be put in as the central attacker then things could work out really well for Newcastle, they need a boost either way. I got in Ba over Berbatov and I'm hoping this good form continues!

Can't believe all this Ba talk i'm hearing of how he's suddenly "in form" just because he scored twice against Everton.

Newcastle in general have been poor this season, Ba included. However, Ba had actually had an impressive shots rate prior to the Everton game, he just happened to score 2 in that particular match. However, it has to be said neither of those goals were too impressive. The first was a mis-hit scuff which Howard should have easily saved. The second was all about Shola Ameobi's brilliant chest-flick-on which again, Ba scuffed and which Distin should have cleared had he sorted his feet out.

I'm not saying Ba is a bad option... he's a quality player who I had been considering getting myself for the last couple of weeks. My point is his brace against Everton doesn't change anything or make him a better or worse prospect.

In fairness it does make him a better prospect if you believe in the concept of confidence = rewards. I disagree his first goal was just a scuffed shot, sure it wasn't well hit but I think he showed a good deal of striker's instinct to know if he hit it then it would be enough to get past Howard (who hardly covered himself in glory, I agree)

There other thing I would say is maybe Ameobi's brilliant work was 90% of the reason Ba scored but Ba isn't designed to do much other than SCORE. He and Cisse are striker's strikers. Which is why it's a little complicated having both in the team. Ba doesn't need to impress further than putting the ball in the net as far as I'm concerned. And for a striker I'm afraid that counts as form my friend!

Point is he was getting chances prior to the Everton match. It isn't a case of him being shifted to a different position which enabled him to score twice.
Now, if he'd slotted those two goals away clinically and displayed confident finishing it'd be a different story, but he didn't - he scuffed them both and on a different day both would have been kept out.

He's still a good prospect obviously, but the goals at Goodison will do nothing apart from pile a bit more pressure on Cisse.

Has anyone watched many Tottenham games? Just wanting to get a gauge on how much of an attacking threat Vertonghen has been. May look at freeing up 1.4m switching him to Gallas or even Naughton at 4.4m.

+1 would wait a bit to invest in Newcastle defence.

I've seen a lot of people on here backing Naughton...and he's cheap as chips. For some reason I see Vert coming good though!

Naughton would only be a very short term investment though, as BAE would surely reclaim his spot once back from injury. Unsure on what the preferred CB partnership is when Kaboul is back too. Will Gallas hold his spot, or will Vert hit the bench as in GW1?

I had Vertonghen to start the year, but I just dropped him (playing my WC this week). I'm an Ajax fan and when you really think about it and look at his track record in Holland, he was never much of a goal scoring threat. As for clean sheets, I don't expect many with the way AVB has the Spurs playing. If you want a defender who is going to score goals, get Leighton Baines. He has been on my team since the beginning of the season and I was rewarded for it last night. He scored a great goal against Newcastle. I expect a handful more from him this season.

    Hello deadzoners!

    2 FT's, which should I do:
    A. Torres, Noble to Berba, Hazard
    B. DDG, Zab to Foster, Baines (also leaves me with 1.7 in the bank)

A gives me some of the 'essential' players, but B rids of me two players who are really big rotation worries.

    Current team:
    DDG
    Cole Zabaleta Demel
    Bale Michu Maloney Noble
    RVP Tevez Torres
    Subs: Federici Clyne Britton Tierney
    +2.0

    Thoughts?

I'd go B. Baines is 'essential' in my opinion, and Foster has some good fixtures coming up, which could give rise to immediate returns. Gotta keep Torres for this GW with the opposition he's facing too.

Hey guys. Just looking for some views on which team you guys would rather have over the next few GWs. The main difference will be a lack of RVP in one which allows for better balance imo. Now we have seen that fergi has no issue with dropping him and the score vs Wigan will only increase his confidence in his squad so I expect more rotation to follow especially during CL, and cup games. Thanks for any input offered.

Team a: With 1.5 mil in the bank

    Jaaskelainen, Foster

    Baines, Ivanovic, Naughton, Rafael, Huges

Hazard, Santi, Michu, Pienaar, Sterling( Considering Nolan here but then will have selection problems)

    Tevez, Berba, Ba

    Team B:

    Jaaskelainen, Foster

    Baines, Naughton, Huges, Davis, Demel

    Hazard, Santi, Michu, Pienaar, Sterling

Either 5.86749 of 10 or 9.9999 of 10, your mileage may vary. Nice mix of stars and scrubs.
Your bench is going to be either Guthrie or Snodgrass, depending on the fixture and then two out of Cuellar, Davies, Demel, probably, depending on the fixture. Baines is always in. McAuley is probably always in over the rest of the crowd. You aren't likely to ever start more than three defenders with a front-heavy lineup like that, so it's probably not that difficult.

Sorry for joking. Just saying it's hard to predict. Every week somebody comes through with a differential player that goes nuts and they put up a plus 25 versus the rest of the teams in their league and then you have a week like last week where a front line of (C)RVP (WIG), (VC)Torres (qpr), and Tevez (sto) gives you a total of 9 points.

I think your challenge is going to be guessing right on the defenders fixtures from week to week and tweaking your stable of budget defenders while watching the upcoming fixture list so as to make sure you have 3-4 each week that have matchups that aren't too bad. You'll stumble onto a fair number of sixes just because there are a number of squads in the BPL that just don't score much on the road. Get that right and you are a 9.9. Get it wrong and have a letdown week from the front and you have a 5.8

    Morning all

Well, it's all the Bs at the top of the Championship - Blackburn, Blackpool, Brighton. I like that a lot and hope it'll be the 3 who go up.

Anyway, owing to shoddy planning I have 10 out of my 15 at home this week and a bit of a bench headache. Does this look right?

    Foster

    Zabaleta Demel Baines

    Hazard Michu HBA Pienaar

    Tevez RVP Berbatov

Subs: Useless injured keeper, Maloney, Rangel, Clyne.

I feel that Swansea will concede but score in what could be an exciting, high-scoring game so I decided to bench Rangel. Usually Maloney would be a definite starter at home to Fulham but I want to play the other four considering their form and the fixtures.
Getting the bench order right has long been a problem for me in this game. I'll have a look at the bookies odds on Friday night and wait and see if they all come through the Euro fixtures unscathed first. Cheers.
