Our Watchlist rankings were refreshed earlier this week, with the defensive solidity offered by West Ham reflected in our update. Up front, we hold firm with Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez, while a certain Bulgarian makes his way into the top three in the tussle for our Fantasy affections. You’ll find the updated rankings, in their usual location, in right sidebar…

Goalkeepers

Jussi Jaaskelainen climbs to the top of the pile after registering a third clean sheet in his opening four matches. The West Ham stopper is racking up the save points in FPL – the top scoring keeper thus far, his cut-price appeal has already seen his cost rise this week, with strong fixtures to follow. Ben Foster has also seen a price hike. With Fantasy managers shipping out David De Gea in their droves due to Sir Alex Ferguson’s rotation policy, Foster’s security of starts and guaranteed save points is proving popular – four favourable fixtures in the next six will likely see the Baggies man continue to pick up in ownership.

Michel Vorm drops down to third after a disappointing display at Villa last weekend. Swansea have now conceded twice in their last two and with Chico still suspended and Neil Taylor out for the season, suddenly Michael Laudrup’s side look a little less enticing at the back. Everton’s Tim Howard holds steady in fourth, despite conceding twice at Goodison on Monday evening – a kind fixture list offers the Toffees stopper plenty chance of points over the next couple of months.

Defenders

Unsurprisingly, Leighton Baines remains in pole position after grabbing the opener against Newcastle on Monday evening. With City and United mustering a single clean sheet between them this term, the Toffees left-back is looking the best bet for those Fantasy managers willing to spend big at the back, with his propensity for picking up FPL bonus points returning eight already – joint-top after four Gameweeks.

Gareth McAuley is another strong West Brom option. With Goran Popov rated “very doubtful” for this weekend’s visit of Reading, McAuley and Liam Ridgewell could be primed to pick up the points once again. The former, with a goal and assist accrued already, offers the greater goal threat of the Baggies pair at present.

West Ham’s Guy Demel climbs in our estimations after another clean sheet at Norwich last weekend. The right-back looks nailed-on for Sam Allardyce’s side and priced at 4.1 in FPL and 3.6 in the Sky Sports game, he’s proving to be a cut-price gem at the back so far.

Angel Rangel continues his slow slide down the rankings. As mentioned above, the Swansea backline has been hammered by injury and suspension and Michael Laudrup’s men have paid the price. The fixture list continues to look prosperous, though; with three home matches in the next four Gameweeks, Angel’s attacking right flank raids gets the nod over budget option Ben Davies.

Thomas Vermaelen remains our Arsenal defender of choice. The Belgian is facing stiff competition from Kieran Gibbs for our Fantasy affections after the left-back produced a pair of assists against Southampton – while Carl Jenkinson remains the budget option, the imminent return of Bacary Sagna will surely prove detrimental to his game time. With three clean sheets in four, the Gunners look far more stable since employing Steve Bould as defensive coach and Vermaelen’s eye for goal is always capable of producing.

Midfielders

Eden Hazard may have drawn a blank last time out at QPR, but the Chelsea new boy holds firm at the top of the midfielder rankings. The Belgian is afforded two strong home matches in the next three Gameweeks to return to goalscoring form, with Stoke and Norwich both rolling up to the Bridge, his potential for points is obvious.

Michu remains close on Hazard’s heels. While our faith in the Swansea backline has slightly diminished, the summer signing from Rayo Vallecano looks the safest attacking option ahead of (EVE, RDG, WIG) in the next four. With Danny Graham struggling for goals and new boy Pablo Hernandez handing Michael Laudrup a selection headache out wide, Michu will be crucial to his side’s chances of bouncing back from their surprise defeat at Villa last time round.

Santi Cazorla stays in third, despite a trip to City and home clash with Chelsea up next. The Arsenal playmaker has settled seamlessly into Arsene Wenger’s first XI and looks primed for Fantasy points – as Members can see, his potential for goals and assists is second to none, when assessing the midfield options.

Steven Pienaar justified his Scout Pick selection last week with a pair of assists against Newcastle. The South African has now overtaken Marouane Fellaini in FPL and with form, fixtures and a kind mid-price valuation across the Fantasy games, Pienaar’s upcoming schedule should ensure a continuation of his recent strong performances.

Gareth Bale makes his way back up the Watchlist rankings after opening his scoring account for the season in Spurs’ win at Reading on Sunday. Many had lost patience with the Welshman after a blank first three Gameweeks and sold him on but Bale served a reminder of his capabilities against the Royals and now has four home games and a trip to Southampton in the next six to plunder the attacking returns.

Below the top five we find the likes of James Morrison and Kevin Nolan holding firm with potentially prosperous fixtures to come. Antonio Valencia replaces Shinji Kagawa as our United midfield option for the time being, while Raheem Sterling enters our thinking as a budget option. Robert Snodgrass suffers from bad fixtures but remains a worthy differential in the low-to-mid price bracket.

Forwards

Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez remain at the top, despite rotation concerns over the Manchester duo. With Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero both nearing full fitness, the situation may be reassessed over the coming week or two but right now, our faith in the pair still remains strong.

Dimitar Berbatov leaps up the rankings after his eye-catching home debut for Fulham last weekend. Reunited with Martin Jol, the Bulgarian seems to have his swagger back and is the current front runner for that crucial third forward slot, with huge numbers of Fantasy managers already drafting him in this week.

A brace away to Reading saw Jermain Defoe continue his decent start to the season. in the short-term, at least, Defoe looks to be ahead of Emmanuel Adebayor in the Tottenham pecking order and with three goals and an assist in his first four, we’re backing him to maintain his form with a strong run of games on the horizon.

Southampton’s Rickie Lambert offers a cut-price option up top and has three home games in the next five to add to his couple of goals so far, Demba Ba’s brace at Everton is surely enough to earn him a first-team recall ahead of games against Norwich and Reading, while Lukas Podolski enjoys a climb and offers an alternative to Santi Cazorla amongst the Arsenal attack.

Thinking about moving Szczeny and replacing him with Ben Foster, do you think that is worth taking a -4 hit on?

NO you need great points over the season. Although Bego is a good pick his fixtures are poor for the next few unless you just rely on save points. Go for Foster and your keeper issues should be sorted for the season.

WBA away looks tricky. Yaya's playing in an advanced role with Javi Garcia in, may want to keep him. Let's see how they both do for another 2 gws. And Arsenal's fixtures will pick up from gw7.

I reckon Yaya is almost fix proof. Although yes, if he drops deeper again its Caz time for me... or Bale, but I don't really want the robocop bandwagon to start again so I'm pretending he doesnt exist.

I'm pretty sure I know my next few transfers, at least I'm set on them for the moment, depending on what happens. I may have to take a few hits to get there but it's in this order:

    1. Terry > Baines
    2. McClean > Sterling/Guthrie
    3. Pog > Berbatov
    4. Lescott > Sagna
    5. Tevez > Aguero (possibly)
    6. Al Habsi > Begovic
    7. HBA/Kagawa/Hazard > Cazorla

If I can get these done without any hitches I'll be a happy man and hopefully my WC will be intact. Wish me luck!

so what you're saying here... if i read between the painted white lines... is:

your team, currently, consists of Terry, Pog, Lescott, Al Habsi and Kags?

      Ouch.

Thanks at least for wishing me good luck, I'm not expecting the plan to go smoothly but this is my ideal vision for my team if I can make it happen with a few hits.

I don't know why you're being so critical of these choices, Terry has kept 2 CSs for me, Pog has scored, Al Habsi has kept me a CS when I played him over Jussi one week and Kags has scored for me, only Lescott has been the major let down. The point I'm making is I'd rather not WC out of panic but try to fix the flaws in my team slowly with hits and this is my 4/5 week plan.

Yeah your players have scored, but there's better value for that money somewhere else and looks like you've missed out on some major risers too. Anyway, good luck man.

No I got Ba because I fancied his next 2 fixtures and he's captain material for those. Whereas Berb is playing Wigan away and Man City home in the meantime. I've checked my bank and I can afford his rises til after the city game but I don't expect he'll be 7.5 just yet unless he scores a 2/3 against Wigan. So I thought Ba was better for now.

I was just shunning the notion I should feel embarrassed about having these players, there's plenty of reasons why I would prefer to have a better team but I'm trying to rectify it. I just found his 'Ouch' comment a bit holier than thou.

      Depends on away form, eh?

I have Berbs, but I WCed last week, so he was my punt. But if I was to spend a transfer now, I would get Fletcher.

It's probably '6 one, half dozen the other'.

I would still get Berbatov. It's been years since he had the backing of a manager and he seems to be a confidence player. And as hopeless as Fulham are away I can still see goals - if not victories - in their next few away games.

Impressive history, King Eric. I would love a top 1,000 finish some day.

I was top 500 last year in week 36 ... then fumbled the ball, to use an American football reference. I blame the drink. The seductive drink.

But I'm the first to argue luck is a significant portion of the game. As in this Berbs/Fletcher question.

Re Fletcher, I just don't see Sunderland racking up as many goals as Fulham. Although clearly they will have their streaks when fixtures/form come together.

Whereabouts in the US are you? I adore America, although I can't get into any US sports. Might be different if I lived there.

New York, about 60 miles north of NYC.

I heard an argument once about why Americans don't 'get' soccer, and it theorized that footy was too multi-dimensional - players being too generalized. American sports tend to emphasize the specialized traits: quarterback, designated hitter, etc.

I think the cultures tend to value different styles of sports.

I love NYC. I have family there so I've been many times. One of my best mates - the only American I know who uses "cheers", on account of the fact he lived in London for years - has just moved to Portland. Cannot wait to go there.

You're spot on about the specialized traits - it's the same in baseball and basketball. I always thought one day I'd live in the US and I'm sure that if I did I would become immersed in US sport. I'm 37 with a mortgage and child now, so it's probably not going to happen...

Yeah WC used last week. Not going bad (my team id is #7 btw) top 100k which is a solid enough start.

I never seem to keep my WC for very long and it's never been a problem in the past. Wise use of transfers can always keep you one step ahead and building that team value is such an advantage in the later stages.

I held on to mine too long last season, so I agree. And the January WC takes the pressure off an early trigger pull. I reckon I'll hold off from any transfers this week after wildcarding last week. The one player I'm massively tempted to dump for a bit is RVPm based on fixtures, rotation and penalty uncertainty. I'll give it more thought next week.

I would dream. But I play for the ML more than rank, in truth. Lording it over people here isn't nearly as satisfying as when I can lord it over friends and family 😀

And I screwed up, so I deserve what I got. The margins are very fine, in this game. Be a *bit* off, one week, can be toxic to overall rank.

Fletcher can dream about scoring goals like Berba's first on Saturday. Plus he plays for O'Neil. Even when Sunderland do win i can NEVER see it being by more than a goal. 1-0, 2-1...

Fulham on the other hand. They are quite capable of racking up goals, admittedly mainly at home. Although they haven't have a centre forward of Berbatov's class for a long time (maybe even ever?) so perhaps he can score some vital goals for them on the road. I certainly think he's capable of scoring this weekend against Wigan and i'm positive that he's up against a much weaker defence than Fletcher

I'm just praying that Berbatov is afflicted by the Fulham away curse and that City swallow him up. I've got too many issues to get him now and Lambert has decent fixtures but I wouldn't be surprised if Berbatov went on a Cissé like run and ends up at about 8.5 million before the year is over.

he's due, but not against the double decker bus that is parked in the stoke defense this week. Haz will get a peno, and may very well take it himself..

    Jussi - Federici
    Cole - Vertonghen - Baines - Hangeland - Clyne
    Noble - Kagawa - Bale - Yaya - Cazorla
    Petric - Tevez - Graham

    2 Free Transfers
    Vertonghen > Naughton
    Noble > Ben Arfa

Petric will probably become Lambert eventually (to rotate home games with Graham), but can sit on the bench for now.

    Hi Gents,

    Considering WCing tonight:

    Current Squad =

    DDG, Begovic
    Cole, Lescott, Hangeland, (Cuellar, Clyne)
    Kagawa, Nasri, Pienaar, Dyer, (Noble)
    Tevez, Podolski, Torres

    To WC Squad:

    Jaask, Begovic
    Cole, Baines, Hangeland, (Demel, Clyne)
    Hazard, Kagawa, Bale, Pienaar (Kacaniklic)
    Tevez, Podolski, Berbatov

Is it a no brainer? Any one you would change?

I'm happy to go without RVP for now. Too expensive it seems.

I like the balance of the WC team - 1 big player from each of: Man U, City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham.

7 changes. seems enough to justify WC.

Clyne is 4.0 bench fodder.. no money in the bank. Any other 4.0 to suggest?

Nani's form shouldn't be tempting anyone, mostly poor again last night and the penalty miss will have crushed his confidence even further. Valencia probably safest bet in United midfield (other than Kags) but far from an every week certainty.
I have Kags and plan to keep for now. He looks pure class to me, exactly what United needed, when it starts to click he could become an assist machine, and chips in the odd goal too. I see the danger that he could become more Modric than Silva, but for now happy to take that risk given that I chose him over Hazard from the off.

I haven't seen any news on this. I'd consider Kelly for a few weeks if he is out, otherwise it's got to be Skrtel.

    Graham > Berbatov

I'm choosing Foster over Jaask mainly because of MCI but then again, I've left most of Demel's clean sheets on the bench 🙁 Also, I could get Ba instead of Berba if I do pick Jaask.

Keepers should be only be changed during wildcards or crisis(both out injured)

      Hmm, interesting opinions.

The consensus seems to be getting Petric ASAP. Any news on him? Injured? Simply out favored to Rodallega? I was expecting him to play alongside Berba and getting similar points but cheaper.

My current plan is Ivanovic to Baines on next FT (used this GW's FT for Zabaleta to Olsson), Everton cover and their fixture's starting to look good, while their form doesn't signal any major decline.

      What's your take on this?

    Greetings fellow FPL Managers.

    FPL:

I've got McCartney and thought he was nailed on before getting injured. Do you guys think he'll retake his spot or is he overdue?

    UCL:

This is my current squad and I'm last on my most important minileague:

    Malafeev, Beto
    Rafael, Vidal, Boateng, Uchida, Gibbs
    Hazard, Cazorla, KPB, Sammir, Bressan
    Messi, Ibra, Mandzukic

I thought of using WC on MD6 when half of teams are qualified and rotate heavy.
It will only be possible to see the lineups of tuesday's matches on MD3 and MD6 for transfer help.
    Would you WC now?
