We take our final bite from Gameweek 5 to chew over a Saints striker running amok, the relentless march of the blue side of Merseyside and the team sheet fallout from a week of Champions League action…

The Player

Rickie Lambert has adjusted to top-flight football with ease – his quality in and around the box apparent from the moment he took the field from the bench at City in Gameweek 1. The strike at the Etihad hinted he could more than deliver on his budget Fantasy price tag and further returns against United and a brace in the win over Villa have confirmed this.

Lambert’s confidence is now flowing, just in time for the Saints’ fixture list to ease and hand the marksman every opportunity to add to his tally. There’s even ambitious talk of rivalling Robin Van Persie’s strike rate from Lambert himself…

“I want to be in the race for the Golden Boot. It is a massive achievement to win it. I will give it a good go and try my best. There are so many good strikers out there now but who knows? It could be my year…If you can say I am up there with Robin van Persie at the end of the season in terms of goals I will be very happy.”

If the Saints forward can even get close to chasing Van Persie’s goal tally as the season progresses then he will be on course to deliver spectacular value on his price tag. Currently we’ve seen just a small increase to 6.1 in Fantasy Premier League, while a value of 6.8 in the Sky Sports game is pushing us towards a 4-3-3 formation.

Strangely, perhaps, the pace of Lambert’s bandwagon trails others out there. Currently, both Steven Fletcher and Demba Ba are attracting more interest and with Dimitar Berbatov also a major consideration, it appears that we’re spoilt for choice for options to freshen our forward lines. Clearly, Southampton’s indifferent form and a tough trip to Goodison this weekend are still deterring many from jumping on board .

However, Lambert has shown he has the quality to aspire to become a “fixture proof” asset and with assured starts, spot-kicks and a blossoming fixture list, there appears to be little standing in the way of him becoming a key figure in our Fantasy squads in the weeks to come.

The Team

Everton are looking irresistible right now, so much so that overloading on three of their players for the weekend clash with a porous Southampton defence looks alluring. And this is without Nikica Jelavic in the mix – he is set to return to the squad for the midweek Capital One cup tie to add an extra ingredient.

David Moyes’ side have demonstrated they can compete with the very best at Goodison in earning three points against United in Gameweek 1, and have since shown both goalscoring threat and a resolute defence, with the defeat at West Brom their only real blip so far.

Saturday’s demolition of Swansea at the Liberty was ruthless. Forget the red card for Nathan Dyer, Everton were dominant before this and should have put the game to bed in an opening half-hour period which saw both Marouane Fellaini and a rejuvenated Victor Anichebe terrorise a weakened Swans backline.

Fellaini has succeeded in edging above team-mate Steven Pienaar in our thinking again – having lost the mantle following the South African’s stunning creative show against Newcastle, Felliani’s goal threat just can’t be denied. Both appear assured picks for the Saints clash and one of the pair looks almost essential for a run of Gameweeks that should cement the Merseysiders’ place in the top six.

As for Leighton Baines, we surely cannot sing his praises further. While big outlay on our defences is jarring, Baines should be considered as a winger with clean sheets thrown into the bargain. He continues to offer a relentless supply of chances from the left flank and Everton appear to have the confidence and quality to gain from them.

The Talking Point

The decision to bench Carlos Tevez for Sunday’s meeting with Arsenal confirmed that Roberto Mancini will, along with the man in charge on the other side of Manchester, provide Fantasy managers with plenty of concern as the season unfolds. Tevez was given just 23 minutes to maintain his record of returns in every Gameweek so far and duly drew a blank for his owners.

That failure came in a week that again saw both Michu and Eden Hazard fail to deliver – the latter subbed on hour-mark as Champions League rotation took a bite out of our Fantasy squads.

City next face European action against Dortmund a week on Wednesday, three days before taking on Sunderland at the Etihad. While we can likely look to Tevez to earn a start at Fulham next weekend, there has to be concerns that Mancini will call on him and Aguero against the Germans, perhaps limiting their pitch time in the fixtures around the European clash.

Chelsea have the Danes, FCNordsjaelland, up next following their trip to the Emirates: an easier task, perhaps but the depth of Roberto Di Matteo’s options, boosted by the form of Oscar and the gradual return of Juan Mata to full sharpness, is a concern. Victor Moses is also doing his best to earn starts with two appearances from the bench that have drawn the plaudits. It seems his days of frustrating Fantasy managers have taken on a new twist.

A fortnight ago the Van Persie – Tevez – Hazard holy trinity looked impenetrable and the foundation that offered Fantasy success. Now we find ourselves doubting the integrity of all three as mid-price assets push for inclusion to break up the heavy-hitters’ monopoly.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I am twisting myself inside trying to pick between them. It really does depend on whether Fellaini ends up dropping deeper, as we all expected him to. Recent talk has come round to the idea that Moyes is doing everything he can to keep Fellaini up front because it obviously pays off.

So I’ve already done my FT for the week on a knee jerk in doing Gervinho > Fellani. Planning ahead to next week I’m thinking of doing Ba + Ben Arfa > Lambert + Cazorla and then Naughton > Sagna the week after that to give me the following squad for GW8.

    G: Jussi – Begovic

    D: Baines – Sagna – McAuley – Clark – Davies

    M: Bale – Fellani – Pienaar – Cazorla – Sterling

    F: RVP – Tevez – Lambert

Sensible transfers for a total cost of 4 points?

Definite stick or twist time on loads of my players this week. I'm really keen to bring in Everton (Fellaini), Newcastle (Ba) or even Arsenal (Podolski/Cazorla) coverage this week. Even Rafael looks tempting with United's brilliant record against Tottenham, especially at home.

The main question is whether to cash in on any of Tevez or Hazard. Even if both play 90, I think their maximum returns are quite low in two tricky away fixtures. The rotation will only get worse in successive CL-affected GWs.

    Considering
    A) Boyce > Rafael to improve my defence and attacking threat at the same time
    B) Hazard > Cazorla
    C) Hazard > Fellaini
    D) Tevez > Ba & Boyce > Rafael, 4pt hit
    E) Tevez > Podolski
    F) Tevez > Podolski & Boyce > Rafael, 4pt hit

And many combinations of the above...

    Begovic (SWA)
Baines (SOU) Rangel (sto) Demel (qpr)
Pienaar (SOU) Barfa (rdg) Michu (sto) Hazard (ars)
RVP (TOT) Tevez (ful) Berbatov (MCI)

Subs: Foster (avl), Sterling (nor) Boyce (sun) Cuellar (WIG)

    1 FT 0.8 in bank.

Hold fire on any transfer on Rafael until later in the week. Went over on his ankle and hobbled about for a couple mins before being taken off. If he did sprain it( which it looked like ) Injuries like this usually swell up afterwards. No news yet but he has to be a major doubt for the next game and if he doesn't play 50/50 for the game after i'd say

Thanks, I saw the odd mention of a Rafael knock, it's good to hear exactly what happened.

Can't take the risk, unless he's unequivocally passed fit for Saturday (haha good joke SAF) he's off the table. Sad really, he looked great for this week.

        Gibbs does too though...

Think Fellaini is a luxury that perhaps isnt required considering you have Baines and Pienaar. I would only contemplating losing Michu for Fellaini if you so wish.

Cazorla could wait a week tbh. This will sound very dull but how about losing Boyce or Cuellar for Nelsen or Rafael?

Yeah that's option A. Unfortunately Rafael sounds doubtful.

I really can't be sure yet if Nelsen will continue starting with Mbia around. Will wait on it. Last thing I want is transferring out an injured defender for a dropped one!

3.9 Nelsen is bar better than a Gorkss 3.9 to rot on bench. I just think utd's next few fixtures arent appealing for defensive returns.

I am just waiting for news on Cuellar, hoping he plays vs Wigan

For what it's worth I decided to sacrifice Hazard rather than Tevez, because he has earned me a lot of money and looks to be lower value for his price than Tevez. I am going to count on him to play at Fulham and then whatch very carefully what happens after that in the CL. He plays a full 90 minutes there and he is out for GW 7.

I would switch Hazard temporarily to Fellaini and then be ready to turn him into Santi for GW7.

My team definitely came out a lot better and valuable as a result, the only regret is that it puts pressure on me to be more conservative with my punts so I don't wreck my team in the next 15 GWs before the January WC.

Ha thats true. Well last season and this season are the two times I've really tried with my fantasy team, because I've had money on it.

Last season I used my WC in GW1 after a disastrous start, but when I really needed one later in the season I suffered 11 red arrows in a row haha. Managed to recover eventually and win my mini league though so I suppose that's all that matters.

I loved the ultimate team satisfaction that I completed my wc team. Pity, it was short-lived though, probably around 45 min, till I discovered Dyer is on the bench. Made up on Sunday with a total of 67pts.....The jury is still out on whether it was the right call or not, but I do think it was. So yes, I'm satisfied.

Not convinced by Ba at the moment. He's tucked away his chances but Newcastle aren't creating a lot right now. Away trips to Reading, Sunderland and Liverpool in the next 5. Would be surprised if they scored 3 goals total in these 3 games and you would expect any goals they score to be shared out

    Mark - which 2 trf's you done?

wouldn't it be easier to whole-sale WC rather than hits every week?

Who to replace Torres with? I have Tevez and Defoe already. First to five wins:

    A. Berba
    B. Fletcher
    C. Ba

    am leaning towards Fletcher....

Choose 2 strikers to replace Tevez and Pog: (2 free transfers)

    a) Fletcher
    b) Berbatov
    c) Ba (already got Ben Arfa)
    d) Lambert
    e) Zamora

    Thanks

While everybody goes understandably crazy for Everton cover - is Mirallas worth consideration?
Just had a sneaky compare of him with Jelavic and there's not a huge difference in it.
Plus he's Belgian and we all know they are good for FPL.

I had rather have 100% nailed on players from Everton. Even his decent performances, he will be suspect to rotation, right?

I'm not sure. They spent a fair whack on him and he's definitely ahead of Naismith right now.

      It's a shame he is a 7.4m striker

Way too many good strikers around to waste a spot.

I had the same question, and I chose to hold for Michu. Just a couple of weeks longer at least.
