We take our final bite from Gameweek 5 to chew over a Saints striker running amok, the relentless march of the blue side of Merseyside and the team sheet fallout from a week of Champions League action…

The Player

Rickie Lambert has adjusted to top-flight football with ease – his quality in and around the box apparent from the moment he took the field from the bench at City in Gameweek 1. The strike at the Etihad hinted he could more than deliver on his budget Fantasy price tag and further returns against United and a brace in the win over Villa have confirmed this.

Lambert’s confidence is now flowing, just in time for the Saints’ fixture list to ease and hand the marksman every opportunity to add to his tally. There’s even ambitious talk of rivalling Robin Van Persie’s strike rate from Lambert himself…

“I want to be in the race for the Golden Boot. It is a massive achievement to win it. I will give it a good go and try my best. There are so many good strikers out there now but who knows? It could be my year…If you can say I am up there with Robin van Persie at the end of the season in terms of goals I will be very happy.”

If the Saints forward can even get close to chasing Van Persie’s goal tally as the season progresses then he will be on course to deliver spectacular value on his price tag. Currently we’ve seen just a small increase to 6.1 in Fantasy Premier League, while a value of 6.8 in the Sky Sports game is pushing us towards a 4-3-3 formation.

Strangely, perhaps, the pace of Lambert’s bandwagon trails others out there. Currently, both Steven Fletcher and Demba Ba are attracting more interest and with Dimitar Berbatov also a major consideration, it appears that we’re spoilt for choice for options to freshen our forward lines. Clearly, Southampton’s indifferent form and a tough trip to Goodison this weekend are still deterring many from jumping on board .

However, Lambert has shown he has the quality to aspire to become a “fixture proof” asset and with assured starts, spot-kicks and a blossoming fixture list, there appears to be little standing in the way of him becoming a key figure in our Fantasy squads in the weeks to come.

The Team

Everton are looking irresistible right now, so much so that overloading on three of their players for the weekend clash with a porous Southampton defence looks alluring. And this is without Nikica Jelavic in the mix – he is set to return to the squad for the midweek Capital One cup tie to add an extra ingredient.

David Moyes’ side have demonstrated they can compete with the very best at Goodison in earning three points against United in Gameweek 1, and have since shown both goalscoring threat and a resolute defence, with the defeat at West Brom their only real blip so far.

Saturday’s demolition of Swansea at the Liberty was ruthless. Forget the red card for Nathan Dyer, Everton were dominant before this and should have put the game to bed in an opening half-hour period which saw both Marouane Fellaini and a rejuvenated Victor Anichebe terrorise a weakened Swans backline.

Fellaini has succeeded in edging above team-mate Steven Pienaar in our thinking again – having lost the mantle following the South African’s stunning creative show against Newcastle, Felliani’s goal threat just can’t be denied. Both appear assured picks for the Saints clash and one of the pair looks almost essential for a run of Gameweeks that should cement the Merseysiders’ place in the top six.

As for Leighton Baines, we surely cannot sing his praises further. While big outlay on our defences is jarring, Baines should be considered as a winger with clean sheets thrown into the bargain. He continues to offer a relentless supply of chances from the left flank and Everton appear to have the confidence and quality to gain from them.

The Talking Point

The decision to bench Carlos Tevez for Sunday’s meeting with Arsenal confirmed that Roberto Mancini will, along with the man in charge on the other side of Manchester, provide Fantasy managers with plenty of concern as the season unfolds. Tevez was given just 23 minutes to maintain his record of returns in every Gameweek so far and duly drew a blank for his owners.

That failure came in a week that again saw both Michu and Eden Hazard fail to deliver – the latter subbed on hour-mark as Champions League rotation took a bite out of our Fantasy squads.

City next face European action against Dortmund a week on Wednesday, three days before taking on Sunderland at the Etihad. While we can likely look to Tevez to earn a start at Fulham next weekend, there has to be concerns that Mancini will call on him and Aguero against the Germans, perhaps limiting their pitch time in the fixtures around the European clash.

Chelsea have the Danes, FCNordsjaelland, up next following their trip to the Emirates: an easier task, perhaps but the depth of Roberto Di Matteo’s options, boosted by the form of Oscar and the gradual return of Juan Mata to full sharpness, is a concern. Victor Moses is also doing his best to earn starts with two appearances from the bench that have drawn the plaudits. It seems his days of frustrating Fantasy managers have taken on a new twist.

A fortnight ago the Van Persie – Tevez – Hazard holy trinity looked impenetrable and the foundation that offered Fantasy success. Now we find ourselves doubting the integrity of all three as mid-price assets push for inclusion to break up the heavy-hitters’ monopoly.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

While everybody goes understandably crazy for Everton cover – is Mirallas worth consideration?
Just had a sneaky compare of him with Jelavic and there’s not a huge difference in it.
Plus he’s Belgian and we all know they are good for FPL.

It could work out but I think the points are in backing a few 1-0 or 0-0s. Sterling for 4.6 is fair game though.

Should think long and hard before selling players with huge profit like Tevez, Hazard and Michu.

The reason why is, if they continue their runs, 50% of FPL players have them, and you dont. Whatsmore, you will probably not be able to buy them back as money has been re-spent elsewhere.

For me, Ive sold Michu this week. I had intended to offload after Wk8, but with Swanseas form and Fellainis form, i figured that Fellaini might well outscore him over the next 3 wks anyway and Fellaini will be 7.5+ by then whereas michu cannot rise further from here. So I made the move.

Hazard and Tevez are not so clear cut.

Tevez - all players in top teams get rested every now and again. He has scored in every game he started, and was excellent towards the end of last season too. I need more than 1 benched game to be able to say he is not worth it. Whatsmore, City have awesome fixtures coming up... selling now could come back to bite later (unless its a sideways move to Aguero - who could aslo suffer from the same rotation issue).

Hazard - after a stunning (albeit quite fortuitous) start, things have come back down to earth a bit. Nevertheless an average of 8pts per game is great so far. He deserves at least until after the NOR game. 2 weeks ago he was Chelseas most direct attacking threat and a season keeper, given their fixtures toughen up and the emergence of Oscar however could mean that he is worth selling. The jury is out though but you would have to be very careful kneejerking as the cost to get back is prohibitive

I completely agree with this, however I believe that in selling Hazard and Tevez this week for Aguero and Cazorla I am capitalising on the fact that both of these players have less ownership and i'm HOPING that this move propels me up the rankings. It could of course massively backfire but we will see...

A good post though. Interesting youve sold Michu with the fixtures that are coming, I have to say that I prefer him to Fellaini. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks, theres just so many players on form!

on the whole, i agree with your thoughts. and i love the word 'whatsmore'.
the quid pro quo is that if you're quick to spot when an asset is now overvalued you can actually bank the profit, increase your team value and that can be extremely handy late in the season.

true, but player values are sticky in this game and also suffer from inertia somewhat. for instance, Tevez and Hazard will not drop this week. Even if for instance Tevez does his sale value wont change (if you bought him at 9.0), so there is time to play with.

I think your logic here is really good, and for similar reasons I decided I could only sacrifice one of them. But sacrifice one you must, imo, otherwise you are held hostage by your own earnings. I picked Hazard to go (yes, even though he is at home to Norwich in GW8) because he costs an awful lot in comparison with what he has shown himself capable of consistently doing. Tevez is proven, Michu does not cost 10million. So Hazard it is.

Never own Hazard in the first place so no tears shed there and they have awful fixtures

Tevez is an easy sell, Dzeko and Ballotelli will not sit on the bench all season. Tevez is never going to get 90 mins. He'l going to start and get 70 or come on for 20. Either way its a nightmare. Plus lots of lower priced alternatives.

Michu is a tricky one. Was a hard decision but I'm wildcarding I'm doubling up with Fellaini/Pienaar and with their tasty fixtures it could pay huge dividends. Cazorla/HBA/Nolan will provide decent support too 😉

I have 2 free transfers this week and have an insane idea of doing Van Persie and Tevez > Ba and Berbatov, leaving me with £7.7m in the bank. I can't stand Ferguson and Mancini's roation policy, and it's only going to get more frustrating at the Champions League fixtures continue over the weeks. Both managers have been saying since the start of the season that they want to fully utilise all the strikers in their squad. United have Van Persie, Rooney, Welbeck and Hernandez. City have Tevez, Aguero, Dzeko and Balotelli. Team is below:

    Jasskelainen / Begovic

    Baines / Cuellar / Demel / Clyne / Davies

    Hazard / Bale / Cazorla / Michu / Guthrie

Van Persie / Tevez / Lambert

how is this for a plan?

double up on everton this week (fellaini and pienaar) for SOT and bench dyer
double up on swansea next week(dyer and michu) for RDG and bench one of fellaini/pienaar or if anyone gets injured, then him

Also gives me 2 freebies for the int. break

for the next 2 weeks, i think it's worth the risk looking at the fixtures ( and the form, in everton's case)

        already have pienaar,dyer and michu

Quietly confident about my transfer this week, Torres>Suarez. Hate the little ratface but think he could have a run coming.

On another note, is anyone considering Julio Cesar as a bit of a differential? Everyone is going for Foster and Jaaskelainen (however you spell it), but they had a clean sheet at home last time and he could be good for save points.

I'd say lambert for the moment. He's got some great home games coming up and is on pens/direct fks. Monitor fletcher as I'm worried his strike rate won't continue as we're not creating enough chances at the moment.

only room for improvement over coming weeks i can see is Williams --> Arsenal defender or Rafael

Haz --> ? Thinking Silva at this stage due to Citys awesome fixtures
