Following on from last week’s debut, it’s time to turn focus to the latest line of injuries with Dan Agger’s leg injury, Samir Nasri’s hamstring and Stephen Ireland’s arm all taking place on my virtual treatment table. I’ll also take time to assess those already under treatment, with Bacary Sagna and Jack Wilshere closing in on a return to action…

New Arrivals

Daniel Agger
The injury to Daniel Agger occurred as the Dane and team-mate Glen Johnson both attempted to thwart the gazelle-like advances of United’s Antonio Valencia, who swiftly and elusively skips between the pair, leaving the two Liverpool players on collision course. Agger, with left leg at full stretch slides in, just as Johnson bears down with his own challenge, connecting with Agger’s knee, just below the joint line with what can be described as a “valgus force”, a specifically angled and levered pressure that, with pace and force, places great stress on the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL).

Initially we see Agger attempt to get to his feet, where he is unable to put any weight through the affected knee. A further diagnostic clue unfolds as the camera cuts to the physio treating Agger on the ground. We witness the physio applying a valgus and varus stress test to the knee. Immediately after the test, presumably fearing Collateral Ligament damage, the physio calls for a stretcher.

As Agger is carried from the field we are able to witness the stricken player holding his leg on the inside of his thigh and the outside of his ankle, as though applying his own varus pressure, a movement that would minimise MCL stretching and, presumably, ease the pain. It was therefore no surprise to see early indications of a suspected MCL strain. Subsequent reports from Anfield suggest the injury is not as serious as anticipated and diagnose a ‘significant bone bruise with no ligament damage.’

A contusion or bruise is a term often applied to soft-tissue damage. When it is used for bone it usually describes a crush injury to the bone. The hard outer surface compacts into the softer, spongy, shock absorbing inner aspect of the bone. Some medics refer to this type of injury as a type of fracture and one would also expect some soft-tissue damage. Not knowing the depth of the contusion or the extent the injury renders time-scale predictions tricky. “Significant bone bruising” could well render the bone susceptible to fracture and Agger will be under constant review from an Orthopaedic specialist to ensure he returns with minimal risk of re-injury.

Taking Liverpool at their word I feel it would be optimistic for Agger to be in contention for either Norwich or Stoke, although if the injury turns out to be a minor bone contusion and he responds well to treatment, Stoke might well be a possibility.

Samir Nasri
In the 33rd minute of the match between Manchester City and Real Madrid, Samir Nasri, during a rare foray into Real Madrid’s penalty area, can be observed accelerating into space, only to be blindsided and unceremoniously dumped to the ground with a ‘tank’ of a shoulder charge from the Real defender. The blow was harsh and unexpected and curtailed Nasri in full flight. Less than a minute later Nasri can be seen holding the back of his thigh directly over the muscle belly of Biceps Femoris, one of the hamstring group. Thirty seconds later he falls to the ground, again clutching his hamstring in the same area. He then leaves the field with a pronounced gait.

From where Nasri was holding his leg we may infer that he incurred no tendon damage (although tests would be undertaken to confirm this) as he clutched the back of his upper thigh right in the middle of the muscle belly throughout. This is one of the more common areas for hamstrings to tear and given the voluminous blood supply to the muscle, recovery should be much shorter than if the tendons were involved. Personally I feel that Nasri suffered a mild to moderate grade 1 to 2 hamstring strain, meaning only a small cross sectional area of muscle would be involved, with major disruption to the fibres unlikely.

Every patient rehabilitates at a different speed, and transition from one phase to the next will depend upon the severity of the injury and the response to treatment. Two factors can be used to predict the length of time needed for athletes to return to full function from a hamstring strain; the amount of time it takes a player to walk without pain and any previous hamstring injuries suffered, information that I’m not privy to. However, on balance, my instinct is that we could see Nasri grace the City first team approximately three weeks from the date of injury. The Fulham match may come too soon, then, a more realistic return could be when Sunderland roll up to the Etihad on October 6.

Stephen Ireland
The Aston Villa midfielder was taken off at half time at St Mary’s with a suspected broken arm. If x-rays confirm this the length of any absence will depend upon several factors; the category of fracture suffered, if the fracture was complete or in-complete, how much of the bone shaft was affected, the shape or the line of fracture and if the fracture was displaced or in-displaced – do the bone ends still end in opposition or will some type of ‘reduction’ need to be administered. In other words, the severity and type of fracture will dictate likely return scenarios.

From discussions with a physiotherapist who has worked in professional football for a number of years, we can summarise that the extent of the damage will dictate the best line of treatment. If displaced, surgery may be advocated to approximate the bones. If notdisplaced, but x-rays still reveal a full fracture, then a period of immobilisation, usually four weeks, in a plaster cast will be required. Even post four weeks, again, depending on the severity, most clubs will see a further two weeks of healing as necessary to avoid the risk of re-fracture. If not a full fracture, we should still anticipate four weeks as a minimum absence. Again, Ireland will be under constant review by orthopaedic specialists to ensure that the player returns with minimal risk of further injury, so, my gut instinct is three weeks may still be too soon despite being possible.

Under Treatment

Bacary Sagna
On the September 21 Arsenal updated Bacary Sagna’s progress indicating that The Frenchman is one week away from full training.

Arsene Wenger, correctly, has a tradition of nurturing long term injured players back slowly and delicately and when you consider that this is the second fracture of the Fibula that Sagna has incurred in the last eight months, caution is understandable. With this in mind, when full training is resumed on the September 28, it is logical to assume that the medical staff would want to monitor full training for any reactions or latent deficits for a further 10 to 14 days before a return to competitive action would be considered. Factor in performance related fitness and match sharpness and, barring any set-backs, expect him to be physically ready to play some part when Arsenal roll up at Norwich, after the international break, on October 20.

It has to be noted that his rehabilitation, this time, will have taken close to six months, whereas his previous Fibula fracture took four months to heal. He won’t be rushed back prematurely. He is also now 29-years-old and this type of serious injury can leave psychological and physiological scars. An accumulation of injuries can potentially have significant consequences and often leaves its mark mechanically. There is also Carl Jenkinson’s almost match by match improvement to consider. The ex-Charlton starlet is the future of Arsenal, playing well in the present. He is staking a claim and has already laid sturdy foundations. Add into the mix the resolve shown by the Arsenal rearguard this season and we can see quite a conundrum building for “professor” Wenger.

Jack Wilshere
Arsenal were further buoyed with the news of the return to full training of another long-term absentee, Jack Wilshere. A stress fracture to the ankle, hampered by a string of aggravations and set-backs, caused him to miss the previous 14 months.

His physical rehabilitation is now nearing completion and the next stage is to monitor his reactions to full training, which he resumed on the September 20 and taking into consideration the length of absence and Wenger’s penchant for patience and caution with long term injury casualties, it is safe to assume that he will be monitored for reactions before any type of competitive match would be considered. Reports today suggested that Wilshere could feature in Monday’s U21 encounter with West Brom. That may well come too soon – reports also suggest that the Gunners are looking to another U21 fixture, the meeting with Reading on October 8.

You can bet that Wilshere won’t be rushed. All things considered he is still three, probably four weeks away from a first team recall and barring set-backs he should be in contention around the time that Arsenal entertain QPR at the Emirates on October 27.

* Please note, while “From the Physio” offers a unique insight into the injuries that are concerning Fantasy Football managers, such a piece must come with a hefty disclaimer. We might be offering an expert’s view of such injuries but, as with just a remote assessment to go on, the views expressed here should not be taken as gospel or with any certainty. They are, however, hopefully of great interest and arm Fantasy managers with more information to help make their own judgements.

hmmm bad news about Ridgewell...squad was threadbare already and transfer used. Might have to Wildcard with this news on top of Tevez playing 120 mins.

Have Tevez, Ridgewell, Cuellar, Federici and R Bennett all not playing...time to use it?

    Dear Dead Zone,

Today I feel like writing a piece for you to consider. My perspective only; based on member area numbers and watching the games so far this season.

Just spent a bit of time reading all today’s articles and going through the members area ICT numbers. The article and numbers in regards to Michu confirms what I was thinking that he is always a threat and with relatively decent supply (Everton Game the exception not the rule) will provide consistent returns moving forward. It is when I looked in Hazard’s numbers in comparison to other mids that alarm bells began to ring. The biggest number (or smallest actually) is his miserly 3 shots on target. He has provided 6 assists and 3 bonus points over the first 5 gw’s which is a fantastic return. Hazard’s involvement compared to that of Bale for example is fantastic, in fact on the ICT comparison tool he leads every category. In terms of goal threat Bale has the upper hand leading attempts, attempts in box, headed attempts, shots on target, minutes per attempt and shot accuracy. The Distribution stats favour Hazard heavily with bucket loads more passes overall and in final 3rd (although Bale has slightly superior accuracy). However, crossing numbers belong to Bale with the critical number being successful crosses: Bale 13, Hazard 1. Finally chances created shows that Hazard has created less chances for his team mates yet has more assists. All of this is pointing to one thing for me: I need to get Bale back into the team ASAP. Further discussion is required around the effect Oscar and a fully fit Mata have on Hazard. If the Stoke game is anything to go by this is not looking good for consistently high returns from Hazard. Finally we all know the Premier League season is a marathon and not a sprint, will Hazard be able to push through the winter months and Champions League rotation relying mainly on assist potential from the middle of the park?

    Thanks all for reading.

    IKK

I just took Hazard out because I feel there are many things affecting his overall value. Like you said, competition from other attacking midfielders. But another thing I'm concerned about is how Chelsea seem to tactically go about games. I believe that RDM's tactics seem to favour holding onto a lead once they go ahead. If you look at their games so far. Against Wigan they got the 2 goal lead and just hung on for the rest of the match, soaking up pressure whereas other teams might have tried to kill the game with another goal (I'm just speculating here) The same happened against Newcastle where they got the lead and the second half they offered little going forward. Reading was different because they found themselves chasing the game so needed to attack. But it seems from their last two results against QPR and Stoke that they are either finding it hard to break teams down, are becoming one dimensional or that their tactics just seem to be centred on 'Not Losing'.

I always think the core of Chelsea's team ethic is quite defensive and there's also the fact they are playing a single striker who is very out of form. Their midfield has become congested with these attacking mids vying for the same sort of role and as a result they are rotating this role during games perhaps. Anyway, I think Bale is a better bet for pure unadulterated selfish attacking play and returns.

Chelsea's tactics are another sub plot aren't they. They have the talent to attack, attack, attack but I agree they seem try 'not to lose.' This probably stems from the success they had winning the CL in Munich.

Dempsey looks to be the new VDV aka alternative to Bale...he will score goals this year...if him and Bale start delivering it might be hard to choose between them and with both being 9.3 there is no argument of 'well he's better value etc'

Good stuff IKK. Especially in light of Mata's recent performances. Your thoughts on Michu are intriguing. I opted for Graham early on as the sort of established presence in the SWN side. Unfortunately I can't get Michu in (and perhaps an EVE mid-price midfielder is a bigger priority). Your point on Bale is completely valid. Like many I grew prematurely frustrated and, um, bailed on Bale. Ouch.

I actually had Lampard for GW1 and 2 and was quite satisfied. Unfortunately, the increased readership on FFS has contributed to these insane bandwagons where 2 good GWs results in 0.6-0.8 point rises. Massive groupthink. Hazard is never in a million years 1.4 better value than Mata, but there you go.
Bale has a proven track record and while there is some merit in the idea that he goes quiet for a number of weeks then explodes - but at the end of any given 10 week period he will produce the goods.

At the end of the day, though, Hazard's quality and stats from last season make you believe he will deliver. Only two weeks ago, people were WC'ing and betting that he is a season keeper. Even experienced FFS veterans.

I am keeping him for now.

Well Hazard got 21goals and 15assist last year. Also he earns a lot of penalties so higher percentage of his chances created will be converted. And top of all, Bale is so frustrating player to own. He is 2 2 3 1 2 15 9 3 3 2 2 1 2 type of a player. I consider me not as a patient fantasy manager so I can't stand owning him. I want steady return from my players to be relied on when called upon.

More important I know that Chelsea and Hazard will deliver against lesser teams and with Gareth and Andre that surely isn't the case. U own your big guns usually for the fixtures and u want to captain them when needed. That is not the case with Gareth.

For me if u can promise to your self that u will keep Bale for 10 weeks or so be my guest. But if not don't do it, cause there will be temptation all over the place with mid price midfield or other heavy hitters.

Suit your self. And read again that wonderful class of article what kind of a manager u r 😉

      Thanks for your thoughts, IKK.

There are some brilliant resources in the members' area and you have highlighted some of them. Whilst Bale's superior statistics appear to make him the better buy, there is one factor that we can sometimes forget when making decisions on players and that is a player's overall points score.

CHS are able to convert a lot of Hazard's threat into ff points for him whilst TOT appear to let Bale down. For most of us, we have been here before with Bale's stats. Lots of threat but no ff points.

Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and consider the team around a player. A player may put in an impressive amount of crosses, key passes, etc, but if they are not converted, few ff points ensue.

May I please have the blessing of the esteemed Dead Zone's honorary noblemen to employ the talismanic Ricky Lambert at the expense of the Argentinian great Carlos Tevez. Such an undertaking may be fraught with great risk as I seek to journey through the treacherous lands of the FPL landscape. This the landscape where the sands of the CL shift and change, where great defences are battered and ruined and the attacks of great warriors are repelled and subdued. The only thing I would say against it is Lambert's immediate fixture being a tough one. But if you want him long term I don't see a problem with just getting him while he's in demand.

Wait till next week. This way you can assess whether Tevez is going to play. Also, whether Lambert can keep his form.

I think that's worth the .1 or .2 Lambert will rise.

Ay, FPL is always fraught with much risk and we cannot begin to hope for the best all the time. For me I believe such a risk is a dangerous game to play. Equally the risk of not having Tevez whom Mancini may continue to start is of concern. However I am convinced that Lambert is capable of equalling his returns at a much lesser risk of rotation and for a better price.

Indeed it is and I think it is already decided. It seems I have the support of most of the DZ which is enough for me to finally push the button. This I believe is one of the toughest decisions I have faced this season. Thus the need to have the blessing of the DZ.

You've got RvP and I think 1 of RvP, Tevez, Aguero (or Rooney when he is fully fit) is required. If you dump out Tevez, I'd give some thought about getting in Yaya or Silva. You jnow MNC will score lots of goals and you want some access to that. I'd keep Tevez tbh if I was you.

Aguero is a future consideration, as is Silva and Yaya. I shall wait to see who becomes the better option. At this stage I'm favouring a midfielder at the expense of Hazard down the track.

You have my blessing Brother Ryan esp as you are in the same waka as me.

In fact, I had a scandalous thought earlier of rotating the third striker each week playing the fixtures/form! Sacre bleu.

Brilliant. Some are keen on the striker rotation on here with Berb. I have no problem with the idea. Personally I will play my strikers every week but that may change as I could very well end up with a big 5 midfield with all the spare cash available.

    My dilemma:

Jussy away to QPR or Ruddy home to Liv? I was all set on Ruddy maybe but this awful performance by QPR in the CO cup made me reconsider. If I pick Ruddy I will get the chance to earn saves from Suarez for sure.

Norwich have been surprisingly competent in defence recently. Think there's a stat something like even including the 5-0 drubbing in the first week they have still conceded the least goals in the bottom 6/7 which really tells you how well they have recovered.

3 goals conceded in the last 4 and Liverpool are hardly prolific. Therefore I'd play Ruddy, but Jaask isn't a bad option either, just feel like QPR have potential to grab a goal or two at home

      Hi Daniel.

I just don't buy the Jussi love on here. Notoriously error-prone keeper in a newly promoted team. Looking at the stats, the Whammers are giving up a lot of scoring opportunities too. I just don't see the cs continuing, I'm afraid.

really? yes but then i have 2 injured defenders and hangeland vs man city, tevez likely rotated, marveaux not going to play and fed also injured. plus the fact that rvp will probably start to get rotated in a few weeks time and everyone will want to get rid and i'm not sure how hazard will do in his tough run of fixtures.

the wc is based around the thinking of avoiding the rotation zones known as manchester and getting in in form strikers that are cheaper and can be rotated with a strong 5 man mf. combine that with 3 attacking defenders and a good gk rotation and i figure it should score very well week in and week out

The opportunity to get value out of playing the WC - not the WC team listed.

I think having your WC to used at a critical time (ie. when you can't field 11 players) is best, especially with two teams not having pitch heating this season.

From what I see he offers very little in the first half of games, but in the second half he often ends up playing in a near CAM position. Vs Arsenal even defending a one goal lead he often was the 3rd most advanced player.

With City's decent run of fixtures, and Yaya being totally nailed on, think he might be worth a shot. I do think he's a streaky player you have to get at the right time but with City stuttering recently Mancini could look to Yaya to take more of the offensive burden.

I think he is a very good call right now. With City expected to get all defensive I'd say there is a good chance Yaya will be the one more involved in the attack.

I can never quite convince myself about Yaya, the price and the general feeling he only gets pushed into an CAM role when asked puts me off as I want a mid who is going to be guaranteed to be involved in attacks all game. That said, he is a marvelous player and always a threat when he's pushed forward. If he was any cheaper I'd consider it but I would feel too impatient if he delivered 1's and 2's in a row too often! 😀

He's a bit of an enigma. I got him pre-season at 8.0m, and he's risen to 8.3m since then. 29 points over 5 games is solid, if unspectacular. If I didn't already have him I don't think I'd bring him in though- 39% ownership offers little in the way of differential value.

Ye there's just no way I'd pay an inflated price for him when you can probably spend your money better elsewhere imo. Solid returns so far but unless he cracks double figures in goals this season he won't be worth it long term. Plus there is City attackers who will rake in the points no matter what. I wouldn't see Yaya as sufficient cover for players like Tevez/Aguero who can score hat-tricks on a given day.

Correct. I'm over-exposed with City at the minute- Lescott, Yaya and Tevez. Thinking of the obvious Tevez-Aguero swap next week, and I might even shift Yaya for Santi if I can generate some funds by bringing Sterling into the mix

Offers me a lot of mini league differential though which is far more important to me.

I just feel like when he does push up in the last half an hour he is one of the biggest threats in the league and I'd feel more confident with him pushed for half an hour than most players for the whole game. Defensive mid doesn't do him justice.

Look at his FF history. 139 and 146 points the last 2 years and he started the game this year at 8.0. He's not going to set the world on fire but for consistent points at that price - boom, sold.

#flair = high risk, which is what you want to avoid in (c) decisions.

Surely he will ... but injuries in the team all around him have made early-season production difficult.

Ironically, the return of Roon coupled with the injuries to the wingers may lead to the ball being pushed up the middle more - which I think could benefit Kags more.

Plus, with the defense put into shambles with Vidic out again, they'll need to score.

I personally think so, looks to me to be exactly what United needed. When he, RVP, Rooney (and I do believe all 3 will play together more often than not) and whoever else is rotated into the United attack synch the points should come. I have a slight niggle that he could become more Modric than Silva in Fantasy terms, but right now very happy to keep him in my team.

I find it silly people are taking hits to take out Tevez. He has delivered in every game so far, bar one. Sure there will be rotation but he is in great form and they have great fixtures.

Surely people have more glaring issues in their teams then to take out the highest scoring forward and the third highest scoring player overall.

I still have Tevez, but am undecided what to do with my 2FT this week. I see th eprice tag as reason he is being taken away. I see most potential for points amongst the strikers, you want to be sure an expensive striker is going to play. I'm not convinced that Tevez will play enough for that price. Simialr argument used for RVP, but currently I beleive he will play most of the time and be worthy of the price tag. At season start I saw Aguero as city first choice striker, and I still believe that, not having Tevez will hurt some weeks, but probably not enough for me.

Still might keep him, as you say, I have one or two other things I might prioritise higher, but I don't see him being around in my team much longer, assuming Kun stays fit

even with two defenders injured, a 5.0 wigan defender, marveaux, graham who hasn't done much of anything, tevez who's a rotation risk, and fed who's injured? paired with hazard and michu fixtures looking bad in a couple weeks and the fact that rvp could be rotated anytime as seen by last week?

^^^ This is not a bad team + you have a FT with cash to splurge. That said, if it's really bothering you, do it. But I wouldn't.

      I do 😉

I guess the reason people don't like it, is that you could field a decent team this week, with maybe one hit. And then sort other problems over a few weeks.

The other main reason is that people aren't ready to believe (yet), that the world isn't actually flat after all .............

TW you seem at the same place I am, maybe even a lil further! Where the WC looks such a great option, just not 100% sold. For what it's worth I'm still not sure.... very tempted. Could make or break the season.

Much prefer the second half of the season once everything has settled down, also I like to look back over how a player has scored over the season and look at trends in their point scoring, something you just can't do without 15-20 fixtures being played.

I suppose that's what you call the business end of the season...when there's more skill involved perhaps. Or at least your judgement calls are based on cold logic rather than jumping on every bandwagon until things become clearer. I agree with you, it gets much more interesting in the latter stages. Right now it feels like a free for all at times.

Only Lambert has a clear chance of price rise. Anderson, Herderson, Osman, and Cabaye with chances to fall.. Also, Adam and Fabio on the border.

TW. I essentially just pulled the trigger. It doesn't say "wildcard activated" on my transfer screen, but I brought in Lambert to avoid the price rise, so if I don't do it, it will be an 8 point hit, and a crap team this week

After a couple of crummy weeks, lots of rotation , a few injuries and falling way down the ladder I was inches away from a WC, but held off.
Instead, I did Zaba- Baines and Graham-Berb for -4.

Now I've got the fever I don't care anymore; I'm eyeing Hazard- Fellaini to make it a -8.

Over the next 3 gw's I can see it paying off ,right.. RIGHT? Or wrong?

I'm afraid that the -8 is self-defeating. Get Fellaini next GW and you'll have him for two of those fixtures ...

Yeah, point hits don't cure the pain of low scoring weeks, unless you have masochistic tendencies.
But really, on each of the 3 transfers I can see making up the point hit..in theory.
It's difficult to walk away from Fellaini vs Soton.

'Making up the point hit' only means drawing even, though. I like Baines, would have told you to wait on Berbs (but I think he's a great punt), and I understand the vs. Soton allure ... but if Jelly returns it might just push Fella back.

-8 = two goals, basically, just to get even. Baines won't score every week, Berbs might not vs. a City seemingly dedicated to not leaking goals, so you'd be depending on Fella to score three to make it all worth it.

Looks dicey to me - but best of luck. 🙂

If you look at the overall dream team so far in FPL the team is literally all blue, white and black. It disturbs me a little that there is no fiery red in there, it gives off an altogether dull and emotionless hue if I say so myself! 😀

I did notice this when looking at some of the current leaders...it's predominantly these colours. I suppose being a Sunderland fan I like a bit of red in there from time to time...and you'd usually expect red for any Man utd players in a dream team...or Liverpool in days of yore...
