We sign off on Gameweek 7 by name checking Arsenal’s Spanish schemer, looking at the potentially problematic route into United’s first XI and the upturn in defensive solidity by many of the big guns…

The Player

Arsenal’s win at West Ham, played out in front of the tv cameras on Saturday evening, afforded Fantasy managers the opportunity to run the rule over the Gunners’ assets ahead of a trip to Norwich next time out. While Arsene Wenger’s side impressed by coming back from a one-goal deficit to end the hosts unbeaten home run, there was little doubt as to the game’s chief protagonist.

Dictating the visitors’ play from his role in “the hole”, Santi Cazorla was simply a class apart. Offering a constant goal threat and providing opportunities aplenty for his team mates, the little Spaniard’s performance backed up our own ICT Index, where he leads the way after the first seven Gameweeks of the season.

After a couple of opening blank Gameweeks, the summer signing from Malaga is turning into one of the most consistent Fantasy performers around right now. Cazorla has now scored or assisted in four of his last five appearances, averaging seven FPL points per game from the Gameweek 3 trip to Liverpool onwards, while in the Sky Sports game, he has already received three Man of the Match awards.

While many FPL managers had considered Gervinho as an Arsenal midfield alternative due to his cheaper price and out of position role as a lone frontmen, the Ivorian’s shift to the flank last weekend saw his stock take a significant dip. Gervinho cut a frustrated figure out wide, as Olivier Giroud took the opportunity to notch his first league goal for the Gunners – Cazorla’s position as the main instigator of the Gunners’ attacking moves is nailed-on, by comparison.

With a trip to Norwich and a couple of home games against QPR and Fulham in the next four, the bandwagon is already picking up speed. Budgets are being juggled, squads reassembled, as Fantasy managers attempt to find space in our five-man midfields for a player who is starting to look irresistible for many.

The Team

A 3-0 win at Newcastle produced United’s first away clean sheet of the season, with Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverley the goalscorers. While that’s all good and well for Sir Alex Ferguson, from a Fantasy perspective, the Red Devils are proving to be a real headache right now. United, clearly, have plenty of Fantasy potential – top scorers with 17 goals under their belt already, they have scored two or more times per game since the 1-0 opening defeat at Everton.

In midfield, Shinji Kagawa was subbed off midway through the second-half yet again – the fifth time in a row this has happened – while Nani failed to make the squad entirely. Antonio Valencia could, perhaps, offer us an alternative – back in the squad despite his manager ruling him out earlier in the week, he climbed off the bench at the Sports Direct Arena and comes back into contention, having provided assists in his last two starts.

Wayne Rooney’s recent to the starting XI for the first time since Gameweek 1 also muddied the Fantasy waters around Old Trafford way. Starting alongside Robin Van Persie up top for the first time in the league, he stole the limelight with a pair of assists and maximum bonus; a worrying sign for the Dutchman’s owners, with sales of the former Arsenal skipper beginning to pick up after a single goal in the last four Gameweeks. Faith in Van Persie will surely remain strong but with Rooney coming in at 11.7 in FPL and Van Persie price at 13.5, the option to free up budget and strengthen elsewhere is suddenly becoming that little bit more tempting.

The Talking Point

Without a single clean sheet between them in the opening six Gameweeks, City, Liverpool and Spurs all finally produced the goods last weekend. Investment at the back has mainly been restricted to Leighton Baines and the nailed-on Chelsea contingent, with United’s Rafael perhaps staking a case for inclusion, too, but, as the season begins to finally settle down, are we seeing a resurgence in defensive solidity from the main protagonists at last?

With United also nullifying Newcastle’s threat on Sunday afternoon, this means that four of last season’s top six defences (in terms of goals conceded) all produced the goods. With Chelsea on the verge of a tricky run of fixtures, Roberto Di Matteo’s side could be hard pushed to maintain a record that has seen them concede a mere four goals thus far – Branislav Ivanovic owners will surely hold firm but last weekend’s results hint that the Serbian may have a fight on his hands to remain at the top of the FPL defenders rankings if the pattern continues.

Surprisingly, defenders have been the top scoring FPL players in five of the first seven Gameweeks of the 2012/12 campaign. Ivanovic, Angel Rangel, Alexander Buttner, Ashley Cole and Aleksandar Kolarov have shown that the men at the back are more than capable of racking up significant scores, with only two forwards – Carlos Tevez and Luis Suarez breaking this somewhat unexpected run. With a new-found resilience possibly on the cards for a handful of new contenders, investment at the back could become a priority for many over the next fortnight as we begin to reassess our squads and plan for the upcoming Gameweeks.

You obviously want to but I wouldn't.

I reckon I will go with:

      RVP, Suarez, Berb
      Silva, Santi, Pie & Morrison/Walters

That's the beauty of this season, so many different options! 🙂

What would you do with this team

    foster fed
    baines demel clyne a.williams cuellar
    michu hazard santi guthrie ramirez
    rvp jelly graham

1 FT, 2.9 in the bank

    Berbatov RVP Suarez

Suarez to Ba and get a 4.5 defender in there. Of course give Suarez the reading game, but it is something I would work towards.

I am going without City for now. Unless I get Silva in for Hazard, but I am likely to switch Hazard to Bale after GW8. I will likely just hop on when someone from city becomes essential.

Yea thats exactly what I was thinking, With Ba having maybe a difficult match against Sunderland and Suarez clearly an easier match.... Stick with Suarez then swap to Ba and get a few of the defenders up, I can probably get Davies -> Wilson riding a few price changes too.

I rate Aguero above all other strikers in the Premier League, but do you know what? I'm not that fussed about not having him. Until something changes, I think Man City strikers are no-go zones... certainly during the CL games because of the sheer frustrating rotation.

It's a bit like the Kolorov situation but worse because of how much they all cost.

Out of all 4 strikers, I'm actually thinking that Tevez is the best option because of his work rate in the PL, but following that Dortmund result maybe that will be needed in Europe now.

    Foster

    Baines, Cuellar, Zabaleta

    Bale, Cazorla (VC), Michu, Nolan

    Podolski, Suarez(C), Ba

    Begovic, Fellaini, Figueroa, Gunter

Thinking of saving my transfer and bringing in Sterling for Michu and Mata for Fellaini in GW9 with my two free transfers? Should easily have the money.

Gives my midfield a nice gloss to it.

I do like the fixture, but always wary about sticking the armband on a player with an away fixture. Saying that, NOR are dire.

OK, I'm going for the first attempted Grand Unification Theory of Strikers on this page.

I have RVP now. I want MUN and Citeh attacking players. MUN has no reliable point-scoring midfield options, Citeh has Silva (that is, I hope and expect he will become a reliable point-scoring option). RVP is the best point-scoring option for MUN, and together with Silva I can still afford two corking-good mid-priced strikers and a decent midfiled including Cazorla. RVP is easy to replace if I get fed up, so I am hanging onto him at least two more weeks, maybe more, to see if he keeps getting points.

    Simples.

Yeah, you're right. What I am really doing is planning to bring him in GW9 or so IF he starts looking better. I can change tack and get different Citeh cover if not, but I am justifying hanging onto RVP by hoping for return to blistering form for Silva.

    Jassi / Foster
    Baines / McAuley / Jenkinson / Bertrand / Demel
    Hazard / Cazorla / Michu / Pienaar / Kaca
    RVP / Tevez / Berba

I need to get rid of Bertrand. Not getting much game time.

Could possibly do (both 4pt hits ): Bertrand - Rafael
    Hazard - Bale
    Tevez - Ba

    or

    Bertrand - Rafael
    Hazard - Mata
    Kaca - Guthrie/4.3 Mil MID

Seeing as it's nice and quiet:

    Foster, Begovic
    Baines, Rafael, Davies, Cuellar, Demel
    Hazard, Santi, Pienaaar, Morrison, Guthrie
    RVP, Suarez, Fletcher

0.7 in the bank, 2 ft.

Had a disastrous start but am clawing my way back.

    Thoughts are:

    Next week:
Fletch > Berb (sorry, but Fletch can't keep on going as he is and Berb is Berb and 7.0... or 6.9 again!)
Hazard > Silva (who I prefer over Bale but may be swayed)

which leaves 1.4m in the bank

    Week after:
Davies > Sagna (if fit... he's got a few weeks so he bloody well should be!) leaving 0.0m in the bank
    or
Morrison > Walters, leaving 1.0m in the bank.

I was all set on shipping out Morrison but he's a huge differential for me and if Sagna is fit AND playing it would help my ailing defence.

Thoughts, even though there's the internationals/slips in the shower etc. to get out of the way?

That defense will be getting fairly pricey if you bring in Sagna, I get the logic though and he has good fixtures.

Yea I wouldnt do both the those tranfers these week, I would just do Fletch -> Berb for the next week and then see who shines next week in the sense of Bale or Silva because you might regret it otherwise.
For the next week after that anything can change obviously, but I would probs deal with Davies somehow and keep Morrison for another week.

Something I've noticed this season...there don't seem to be many players that are good FPL players that are nailed on penalty takers, i.e. where the pens are a nice added bonus. Like the good old days of VDV, Gerrard / Lampard in their prime, Ronaldo, RVP last year. This year there is maybe Lambert, Berbatov (confirmed?), possibly Ba?

For next week i have some doubts on what to do. My defence is trash (cashley, saylor, demel, gunter)

but i was thinking about powering up the front now and defence next gw. Should I:

    a) hazard and fletcher > mata and giroud

    b) hazard and cashley > baines and cazorla (no chelsea cover)

    c) other suggestions (meaning can also involve tevez or other defenders)

    Really need some help! Thanks
