International breaks are the bane of a Fantasy manager’s life. Every day we brace ourselves for reports of withdrawals and possible injury scares and today is no exception. Marouane Fellaini has picked up a knee problem, Robert Snodgrass and Romelu Lukaku both have ankle worries, while Winston Reid awaits results of a back scan…

Reports suggest Marouane Fellaini could be set to miss the next three weeks with a knee problem. The midfielder is said to have picked up the injury in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Wigan and has since undergone scans with the Belgium medics – he is now out of his nation’s upcoming games and would be regarded as a real doubt for the Toffees Gameweek 8 trip to QPR if the initial prognosis proves correct.

There is now a wash of reports following the breaking news late last night but Everton are yet to comment on the story, which was published initially on the Belgian FA website. Any confirmed absence would surely prompt significant sales across the Fantasy games. Fellaini has risen to 7.3 from 6.5 in FPL after grabbing three goals in the first five Gameweeks – owned by over 31% of Fantasy managers, he has a strong upcoming schedule which could afford plenty opportunity to rack up the points should be overcome the problem in time for the Loftus Road clash on Sunday October 21.

Robert Snodgrass has been ruled out of the Scotland squad due to an ankle problem. The injury was kept under wraps at the weekend –an unused sub for the game at Chelsea due to the problem, Snodgrass’ omission was generally assumed to be tactical. Having started the Canaries’ first six games this season, the former Leeds man has been a crucial component of Chris Hughton’s first-team – today’s news at least eased fears that he has become prone to rotation under the new manager.

Goran Popov has again reiterated his desire to nail down the left-back role for West Brom. The on-loan defender revealed yesterday:

“I want more than a year. My future is here, I don’t want to go back. So for me it is important now to play and show that I am good enough to stay in English football. I would like to stay here after this year. This is my future and I am thinking like that. That’s why I came here. If I wanted to be back in Kiev I wouldn’t have come here. I came here because I know I can play here. We have spoken about it and the club have said if I do well here this year I can sign for one or two years more.”

Popov has stepped in for the injured Liam Ridgewell over the last couple of matches but the former Birmingham is now afforded the fortnight international break to recover in time for the Gameweek 8 home showdown with City. Having been handed a first-team opportunity, Popov is likely to find out where he stands in the pecking order if Ridgewell returns to fitness – while the Macedonian’s cheaper cost is more appealing from Fantasy perspective, he’s likely to be hard pushed to keep Ridgewell out of Steve Clarke’s starting line-up.

Elsewhere for the Baggies, Romelu Lukaku has pulled out of the Belgium squad ahead of the upcoming internationals. The forward, who made his sixth sub appearance of the season in the weekend win over QPR, has sustained an ankle problem.

Winston Reid has delayed heading off on international duty with New Zealand as he awaits the results of back scans. The centre-half suffered muscle spasms during the Hammers’ 3-1 defeat against Arsenal on Saturday evening – James Tomkins stepped off the bench to replace the Kiwi in Gameweek 6 and would be set to step in if Reid has suffered any injury.

          But those are where people like Fellaini and Osman score. Jelavic is usually on his own in the box when he scores.

      I think that the games without him may well define whether they can do without him in an attacking role. If they struggle to score, he'll be back up top, if they score plenty but struggle to keep a CS he may well be returned to midfield.

        They don't need to have him up top. Moyes has used him plenty of times in a withdrawn midfield role. It just means Moyes can't use a physical approach without him

    Repost, more relevant to new post anyway!

    Couldn’t decide whether to ship Gervinho or Fellaini to get Cazorla in before the price rise. Decided to keep Fellaini in the end cos “at least he’ll Definately play”…now he’s out for 3 weeks!! Great.

    Should I just bench him next GW and play Sterling and hope he gets better soon (or his price doesn’t plummet too much)? Or take a hit to get rid and bring in Pienaar probably?

        Already traded Forehead for Cazorla yesterday! I am leaning towards just playing Sterling this week now and benching Fellaini, as it seemed a bit of a waste leaving Sterling on the bench with Reading home anyway.

      If you don't want to take a hit, getting Gervinho out seems more essential. Fellaini may only miss 1 or 2 games for Everton.

      As I said already on the last post...Prioritise the Fellaini Switch. If you're getting rid of Tevez to get Silva I think it's a bit sideways...swapping the bargain Tevez for an over-priced midfielder who wont score goals like Tevez will...I'm not sure if that should be top of your list of priorities.

        Agreed. Tevez out is how I'm funding the Fellaini switch. I suppose I could do Fellaini to Pienaar, but I'm not sold on EVE without Fellaini on the pitch.

    Repost from last post

    As good and desirable as the big hitting midfield idea is…the general impression I get is that most people would wish to have a team like that at the start of the season but due to form the cheaper options have been more fashionable. Now suddenly Bale/Mata/Silva show some form and everyone wants them in their team as if it’s the holy grail they seek.

    The problem is we know it’s inevitable these guys will score high over the season…they’re too good not to but their form doesn’t coincide all at the same time. Building a team around these guys might be worth it in the long run but I guarantee there will be frustration when say one week 2 of them score blanks and you’re sitting there wondering ‘Why didn’t I go for such and such, they’re only 6m and a bargain!!’

    Saying all this I would love to have all the big name mids in my team…there’s no doubt it’s more desirable…but there’s lots of other things to factor in before rushing into it. Mata might seem like a ‘bargain’ right now but is he really? 9m for someone in a midfield crowded with attacking mids…I would say it’s risky despite his form. Any thoughts on these points?

      I think the value players are in the Forwards - need cheaper forwards (Berb, Jelavic etc) and class MFs (Bale, Silva etc).

      Mata is a funny one, I never fancied him last year and that was without Hazard and Oscar in the team. I'd be vary wary of him, he doesn't offer much of a goal threat.

        To add to that I wouldn't say Silva is that fashionable right now. People including myself are talking about him as an option at some point but I think we need to see more proof of form before we jump aboard.

        I had him last year...he was unbelievably consistent...I think I remember his stats of creating chances last year as being one of the best...if you watch him play he's constantly looking for killer passes to play. He won't score goals galore but he has shown this year an eye for goal and he will get them if it is required of him. Look at his stats last year 17 assists and 6 goals I think...awesome returns for a midfielder!!

      I said this last night but I am very happy with my budget mids of Morrison & Pienaar. They've been scoring OK and allow me to have RVP. OK, I've been lucky but a budget mid at the right time is just as good as Bale/Hazard/etc.

        Too right...Pienaar has been sensational...but it was no surprise...his form the back of last season was stunning and he is such a wizard. It's not surprising he's been so consistent. Morrison is a great prospect as he's nailed on and seems to be even more crucial to their attacking play this year...he's always improving...he's the player I regret not having this season so far.

      I see what you are saying, but the trick is to have the right one or two big midfield hitters at the right time, obviously not easy though. I think quite a good strategy is to have your team set up so that you can afford, say, two expensive mids and then try to have two that have good form and /or fixtures at any one time.

      At the moment I have Bale and Cazorla but if, say, Valencia comes into for just as United's fixtures ease up, I can easily switch one of these two to him.

      He's basically scored 3 headers and has had loads of chances but is not a natural finisher. He's a bit over-rated on here because of his stats. If he reaches double figures I'll eat my hat but I think Everton have more than enough players to score goals consistently for them right now...I doubt Moyes thinks Fellaini's goalscoring is KEY to their success...it's all his other attributes that are essential and the goalscoring is a massive bonus.

    My current attacking 8 are:
    Hazard, Pienaar, Michu, Bale (Kaca)
    RVP, Ba, Lambert

    and the plan was:
    GW8: Hazard -> Cazorla
    GW9: Michu -> Barfa

    However, with their run of (SWA, whu, TOT, AVL) to come, is City cover essential?
    I am contemplating bringing in one of Silva, Yaya or Aguero for this reason.

    So should I:

    A: Hazard -> Cazorla // Michu -> Barfa (no City coverage)
    B: Hazard -> Silva/Yaya // Michu -> Barfa
    C: Hazard -> Cazorla // RVP -> Aguero // Michu -> Silva/Mata (no United cover, -4 pts)
    D: Hazard -> Cazorla // RVP -> Rooney // Michu -> Silva/Mata (-4pts)

          You can get away with it. I've seen lots of non-RvP teams who are doing well.

          You just need some cajones to make the move and nerves of steel when MUN play.

    I'm currently on WC. The big question is to have or not the mighty RVP. Without him you can have such an amazing balanced team and with him you can have a good balanced team + RVP...Should I RVP or not RVP?!...It's a big question...

      Its everyone's question right now. A difficult week to make the decision though unfortunately. It must be awkward on your WC as its a decision which is crucial to the overall balance of your team. For now I am keeping but if I was on a WC I would go without...at a risk, but one that is worth taking.

    Does anyone else find it hard to have sympathy with people who sold Bale after GW3? Why would you sell him with Reading (A) and QPR (H) to come...I never understood this...if you had him from the start...why not keep faith knowing what kind of player he is...Might seem a bit harsh me saying this but I was really baffled all those getting rid before two pretty easy games. And now those people probably have Bale back now...and are even more frustrated! Poor souls...

      Spurs looked poor and bale had been pretty annonymous, whilst hazard was going crazy. Plus bale's price was dropping and hazard's rising. I think people expected bale to get something in those games but obviously they'd have expected hazard to do the same, which he didn't. Just one of those things.

      Why would you want a norwich def in there? Even if you don't plan on playing him. Use the £3m to upgrade to rafael or newcastle def. Verm is your call but I think better options in defence which will save more money. Gibbs for now and sagna when he's fit again. Guthrie to sterling. I'd also do michu>bale.

I think there's no doubt he'll be a real asset this year and his 2 appearances point towards some very decent returns but the hype of this might lead people to expect too much of him...this is what scares me...I don't know if I could take the pain of him not delivering...which is why I'm hesitant still!

        Olivier Giroud was rewarded the maximum bonus points (BP) as Arsenal ended West Ham’s unbeaten home run. In his first start since Gameweek 3, the summer signing from Montpellier returned a goal and assist for his Fantasy owners, with 5 shots on target, a clearance and a block also amongst his EA SPORT S PPI stats. Theo Walcott earned a couple of BP after climbing off the bench to grab a goal and assist, while a goal, 4 shots on target and 57 completed passes helped Santi Cazorla to a single BP in the 3-1 win.

        Giroud - 41 PPI
        Santi - 21 PPI
        Walcott 27 PPI

    Given that I'm set on getting Berba next week (as long as he's passed fit) who would you risk getting rid of out of my forwards?

    RvP, Ba or Podolski ?

    It's tempting to knee-jerk and say Pod but Arse have some great fixtures coming up.

    For the record, my midfield is Hazard, Caz, Michu and Pienaar

      Berba is a long-term target of mine but I don't think I can squeeze him in yet either. I have 2 of yours: RVP Tevez Podolski

      Other than this next 2, Fulham's fixtures aren't amazing. Ba's are much better, RVP's are too. And I think you pretty much have to keep Pod for his next too.

      For the record I am doing Pod > Giroud for the next 2 at least, and then reassess. I'm sure I'll own Berbs at some point - but not in a hurry when you've got Man Utd, City and AFC strikers in his place.

    Would it be appropriate to transfer Fell out now or wait taking into consideration price falls/rises?

      I think this indicates a sizeable chunk of people must be wildcarding this week and cashing in on RVP to spread the money across their squad.

      Can't see many other people using their 1 FT to ditch RVP ahead of a home match with Stoke.

      Too much messing around with City players. Although I agree with getting rid of Yaya...he's a lightweight FPL player at 8m. Owners got lucky so far. Not sure if Tevez is worth getting rid of...A bargain at that price and same price as Silva with more goal threat...hmmm

    Would Yaya be sufficient for City cover?

    Currently don't have any City cover and would like some for their fixtures of SWA, whu, TOT, AVL.
    However, Yaya has returned blanks in his last 4 games....

        Yeah, I think so too.

        Is he playing deeper in midfield again? 4 blanks in a row is terrible for a player priced at 8.3

    How is Hazard to Santi for a -4, keeping in mind long term as well.

    Have no other Chelsea or Arsenal mids or forwards. Presently leaning on not taking the hit and doing it next GW. But damn, norwich is tempting.

      I'd keep Michu for another week and wouldn't go for Gervinho as I think there's a little doubt over him starting vs Norwich, with Giroud having just scored and Walcott making such a good impression from the bench.

      Fellaini --> Pienaar and keep 2 FT seems a bit more sensible to me.
