In the first of three Numbers Game articles focusing on goal threat, we examine the leading midfielders on show with seven Gameweeks down. We investigate averages in our own ICT Index, before probing further to cast an eye over some key indicators amongst the current crop of top 20 midfielders for goal attempts thus far.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Howyas lads.
Fellaini owners ; the latest is that he'll be back ASAP. Not exactly promising for GW8. So, are you sticking or twisting?

I should add, he was close to a 1 match suspension anyways if he gets another yellow (5th of season).

        Same with Michu.

What's the general consensus on here regarding Mata? Still playing deep but being more effective? I can't imagine Oscar or Hazard playing further back so I'd imagine the line up would normally be...for example:

    Mikel
    Lampard Mata
    Hazard Torres Oscar

    Wrong?

I guess the three AM could rotate...Mata is clearly way more experienced and better than Oscar right now so maybe he will take his place usually in that front 3?

Yeah, I think Oscar usually starts in the front 3 AMs, but then drops to Lampard's position jus to cover him when he loads the box. Mata and Hazard are more on the wings, with Hazard on the left and Mata on the right, though Mata gets more central than Hazard.

Yeah noticed Oscar has been doing his fair share of defensive work...which is a good reason to think he's not a great prospect right now. I'm so tempted to go for Mata soon...I think he offers such consistent returns.

Oscar, if he continues to play where he is would be fairly tempting as well. Stats show real potential here and not too far behind the more expensive Mata and Hazard.

Saying that, i'll be seeking the safe(r) embrace of the bearded spanish wizard Mata.

My captaincy choice is nailed on for once!
I'm going to Anfield for the Reading game, so Suarez (c) for the excitement.
I haven't been for about 3 years but was there about 30 times overall when I was young, free and single (mostly early to mid 90's).
Still in one of the Irish LFC supporters clubs, so able to do it for cheap too. Yay.

It's quiet enough, so ill ask now before the hordes arrive next week.

    I got

    Foster,

    Baines, Cuellar, Zabaleta

    Nolan, Cazorla (VC), Bale, Michu

    Ba, Suarez(C), Podolski

    Begovic, Fellaini, Figueroa, Gunter

Current plan is Fellaini to Maloney with my free transfer. Then Michu to Mata after next GW.

    Sound good?

Only other question, would it be excessively ballsy to go Nolan (C) and Suarez (VC). His home form is very good, SOU defense is awful. I see points. And best of all, no INT duty for him. So fresh as a daisy.

        100% sure?

No, but I do feel at his current price or 9.0m he is a bargain that will repay long term. He was always good at home, and now is doing good on the road as well. I see him getting a Silva esque like season, 180ish points this year.

So id like to hop on board nice and early, before the masses really catch on. Plus I think attacking wise, the fixtures are "middling". He should be a consistent source of points.

9 looks good for a player of his quality, I can't agree more with that. But 180-ish points is too much to ask I think. There's a lot of good mids that we have, and the points will be shared, but it won't be surprising if he gets the highest points at the end of the season, in that midfield.

True, I fancy him to get a bit more then the rest due to his set pieces. Well i'll suppose his points tally of last year would not be bad at his current price, and ill be happy in the knowledge he has room for improvement.

I am willing to consider other options mind you.

I got Cazorla a few weeks ago, so I don't really mind being early to some parties if the quality and price is right.

Plus he did not look out of place against Arsenal, at the emirates 🙂

Yeah, I saw that game, he's good at set pieces too, and there's no Drogba around too this season, so he's pretty much nailed to take them, and corners as well, we do score through corners too. It's just a matter of time that we'll know, I'm looking forward to how he plays against Tot.

My argument against Nolan would be...

All of last season I don't think he score more than one goal in a game. He's not what you'd call 'explosive' although I will admit he did score a hat-trick back in the day (against Sunderland) But that was a derby and an exception to the rule. I think Suarez is a more bankable option as he's going to have probably more chances than Nolan to score and he has the potential for a massive score.

Cheers for input, valid argument lad. Suarez does look bright and smart money to score.

Only things swinging for Nolan is the rest, his home form and that mids score more points for goals. Mind you, they also get less chances.

Michu and Morrison would give you

              GW10: SOT

              GW13: LIV/sun
              GW14: WBA/sun
While Michu and Taarabt will give you
              GW9: mic/ars
              GW10: RDG
              GW11: SOT
              GW12: SOT
              GW13: LIV/utd

You've got to marvel at the fact that Giroud and Cazorla had 14 shots between them last game...FOURTEEN. If Giroud stays in the side I just can't see Podolski being a good option anymore. Which is annoying because I went Giroud over Pod to start...Oh captain hindsight...save me!

This is exactly what's running through my head as I consider whether to do Fletcher > Berb

My problem is I'd just be switching one striker at home to another at home. Granted Berbs has the more favourable fixture but I'm not sure that's good enough to persuade me to do it. They both easily could score one goal and match each other. I'm thinking Berbatov is a more long term asset though as he's on penalties and he's the flair pick (More likely to get you a big score)

      Are you on a WC?

Keep fletcher, my reasoning is this:

1- If Sunderland score then it will be Fletch doing the scoring - everything comes through him, Berbs is influential for Fulham but IMO not in the same way.

2 - Sunderland are generally better away form home than Fulham, given the above he has better likelyhood of scoring in away fixtures.

3- Berbs will take a couple of weeks to regain match firness after a few weeks off.

However I have to say that Berbs is more likely to get you those 'massive' gameweeks where he scores 2, sets up 1 and gets 3 bouns points......

Only saw your original question without looking at your team. With the injuries you have you definitely need to address one of them. You definitely don't want to bring in a player who might not start. All it would take is one player dropped to the bench and you're down to ten.

I think Rafael's a better bet than Gibbs anyway. Utd defense should improve, he's quite attacking and looks to be nailed on this year. I'm trying to figure a way to shoe-horn him into my team.

    Martin alright mate?

Has Cazorla gone up .1 then? What do we think about Fellainis comments today, and how his potential absence will affect Evertons play and first 11/formation?

You really high on Giroud then? Dont fancy him much. Gervinho up front is far more exciting (although forehead misses god knows how many chances), and a cheaper alternative to Caz, AND plays OOP.

I think Baines, Pienaar, and Jelavic will still bring it. Fellaini won't be out long either. I don't think it's worth to spend a transfer on him just yet. I'm was planning on benching him and playing Pienaar and Sterling anyways.

Gervinho is very tempting, but misses so many chances. I think Cazorla will benefit with the return of Wilshere. Think Caz is THE man for Arsenal attack coverage.

Like the convo somewhere above about 'El Trio', im trying to also get on that bus. I wont waste a transfer on upgrading Yaya to Silva, but couuld very well have Yaya, Caz, Mata here pretty soon...and already have Bale!!

Vertonghen is taking a huge chunk of funds up, next to Baines in my backline. I dont fancy spurs keeping too many clean sheets in the near future, or throughout the season to be fair, but Vert is such an attacking threat. When B.A.E returns and he slides back to cb I think he will have to go though. At left back he is too dangerous and valuable to take out though, so that dream midfield might have to wait til I can get 2.5m off him to a 4m backup/option.

Cazorla will be 10m before Xmas. 🙁

I was tempted by Gervinho then i rembered he was rubbish just in time. The next 2-3 weeks are critical for Giroud, if he can get on a run then he could be very intresting as Arsenal seem pretty creative.

Alright mate, Caz went up .1m the other night. I reckon Fellaini's injury is for real...won't be keeping him because I'll lose the value I gained on him and I already have Pienaar who's better value at the moment. I think it could have a big effect on their performances but in terms of attacking I don't see them lacking with Jelavic/Mirallas/Pienaar all on fire.

I see Giroud as someone worth considering if you want a differential but like you said Gervinho could play some games up front so it's a big risk. Gervinho's a big risk if Giroud continues scoring as he won't play up front anymore. He'd only be a good alternative to Caz if he was nailed on imo. Walcott might even take Gervinho's place if he continues coming off the bench and scoring.

Just read more comments (ive just settled after long day and its footy time/talk time).....

The Berba bus has broken down? He wont be fit? Wont be match fit? He's not worth picking up for Fulham at 7m before the bus picks up again and he goes up?

Im seriously SERIOUSLY contemplating a 5-10 week front line (after Stoke away at United) of Crouch...Berba and Fletch, and having that dream midfield trio/quad (with Sterling my 5th, already in).

    Salivating.......

Haha, these things tend to derail any plans of budgeting.

I was looking at Crouch for his good run of fixtures too but I did see against Liverpool he had Zero shots. It was a hard away fixture though...He's tempting at his price and he's done really well so far...and is a bonus points magnet when he does do well.

Currently on Fletch, Ba, Lambert at the front. Gonna possibly switch Lambert to Berba this week (wait & see on the news). Its given me a LOT of dosh to spend elsewhere on my team.

This is a crap question but nothing happening at work today so might as well ask away:

Jenkinson or Rangel to start this week? Swansea at home but they've not been great at the back recently.

Baines & Ivanovich will be the other two starters.

Probably. The other option is Nelsen at home to Everton. Probably not going to do that.

Who knows the impact Fellaini's absence will have on Everton, but QPR leaks goals. I would definitely play Jenkinson in your situation.

In a way I'd agree...although I think it's nasty decision to have to make. Swansea's defence looks rocky but Rangel offers possibly more goal threat than Jenks. Rangel also at home to weak-ish opposition looks promising. Wigan do look decent lately though with Kone. It's really a coin toss...if it wasn't for Ivanovic's goal threat he'd be worth benching away to Spurs normally...

It's interesting that the four top scoring strikers have all scored more goals away from home than at home this season so far...

    Ba: 4
    RVP: 4
    Suarez 4
    Fletcher 3

I think it happened for different reasons..

Ba - didn't play CF at home against Villa, plus latest home game was against Manu

RVP - dropped at home against Wigan wtih his manager's sight at UCL fixture, + had leaky Soton away

Suarez - went to playground Carrow Road

Fletcher - overperformed.. now he has nowhere to go but down
