In the first of three Numbers Game articles focusing on goal threat, we examine the leading midfielders on show with seven Gameweeks down. We investigate averages in our own ICT Index, before probing further to cast an eye over some key indicators amongst the current crop of top 20 midfielders for goal attempts thus far.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Wow, so Aguero has gone up .1, Caz has gone up .1, RVP has gone down .1

Anything else I should know about? .2 loss to do RVP to my Kun Kun Aguerooooooooooooooooo...ooo...ooo...(stupendous)

When I was doing my WC I was thinking of going Aguero instead of RVP...because I know he's going to shoot up in value...but I decided if I didn't get RVP I'd be screwed trying to get him back in later. Hasn't gone great so far but I smell a hat-trick around the corner.

Begovic for the next 2 months after United 🙂

Not gonna blow pts on a rotation keeper. Vorm can just rot on the bench mate.

I REALLY like that team I just drafted up.

Foster was a thought of mine to be fair too. I really want a way into WBAs defensive players but cant bring myself to do it! Ridge, Olssen, McAuley, Foster....want one but not enough. Rotation/injuries/suspensions/lack of clean sheets somehow have kept me away.

With Stokes fixtures and his form. Begovic could both a) rise in price and b)return big numbers. Bego all the way for me and Vorm rotting.

If you plan it that way, when you have a free transfer lying around you could do Vorm > 4.5/4m and use the money to upgrade elsewhere.

i know i know but i never ever transfer keepers during the season. Feel like such a waste of even just a FT. Injuries are my only way into GK transfers. Let's say a double injury to a Lindegaard/DDG or Lloris/Friedel duo happens and a big/decent club with decent fixtures need their 3rd keeper and hes 4.5 or less, THEN id be tempted!

To be honest I was joking really to rile up the Suarez captainers. I do apologise! Then again...stranger things have happened.

RE: your post on the last page

Agree with you on why Ba didn't score those 2 times at home...makes you realise how impressive his goalscoring could be if he continues to be the main man up front.

Not sure I agree on Fletcher...true you would expect some regression but there is no competition for goals in that side right now..he's getting 100% of the chances and doesn't have a strike partner rivalling him.

haha.. my bad! but he does score some odd goals... like in the Capital One Cup recently.

Fletch is such a diffilcult pick right now.. he'd probably score in the upcoming derby, but with MON in charge, you know he'd be pleased with 1-0 victories all season and it's ruining Flecther's appeal..

Yeah I know what you mean. Johnson McClean Sess and Larsson in your midfield doesn't suggest 1-NILs all season though...too much attacking talent there. I have a feeling that MON is not allowing his team the freedom just yet to develop and is focusing on results. Important to remember too that before the Wigan game Sunderland had gone on a long run of not winning a game. If anything Fletcher has been the key to the recent success. It might be because Fletch is doing such a good job that we are tending to hold onto leads too much which has led to the impression we're not attacking enough. MON is certainly a results-based manager though...probably why he won those cups with Leicester.

Can't argue though with your concerns as they're the same as mine...will Sunderland play attacking enough to justify owning their striker...remains to be seen.

Rafael is doing the business...could get 7/8 goals this year.

I have a feeling Kagawa will start becoming an option again down the line as Man Utd attacking cover. If you look at his history he scores so many goals for a midfielder. He's much less an assister than people think...the extra goals might mean he's worth more than your Silvas who are mainly assist players. Can imagine Kagawa raking in assists too. Keeping my eye on him and hoping his price plummets.

RVP & rafa are the only safe pick from Manu, imho.. Evans & DDG might gain more interest too, but will depend on how the backline performs in the GWs to come.

i dont think the diamond formation is going to suit the likes of Tony, Nani, Young..unless they prove that they can play well centrally to.. but at the expense of Kagawa, Clev, Carrick? Only Fergie knows what's playing in his mind atm..

Is that because of rotation? I couldnt pick a City or United front 7 for all the tea in China. Hes only started and played 90mins in 4 or 7 and a total of only 36mins in the other 3!

Need a way into the United attack without RVP, and I dont want Kags, and I dont want Nani, and I dont fancy Cleverley or Carrick, and giggs n scholes wont play enough.

Valencia last year got all his assists and goals in easy games apart from the Arsenal game. He's a class player but can't see him repeating that amazing run he had last year or even starting most games for that matter. Therefore probably not worth his price tag.

The other thing is if he got an assist it'd probably be for RVP and most people would have him captain and you'd just be disappointed! 😀

    1. he is a terrific captain material, compared to the likes of ba, old-legs berba, fletch?

    2. he is fixture-proof? (remember 5-3 at the bridge last season)

    3. after the Chelsea & Arsenal showdowns, he's going to have villa, nor & QPR?

I'd say it's next to certain that most of those people will have RVP again in their team before too long. RVP is pretty much the only player you would feel confident captaining against the top opposing sides like Chelsea and Arsenal.

      Funny fact I just read:

Since 1990 San Marino have lost 108 of 114 international matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding 473.

i know alot of people are saying he's overpriced..that he didn't justify the price tag.. but i've also seen a lot of people having a good/well-balanced team with RVP in it.. it's not impossible for you to have RVP together with Santi and/or Bale, Hazard or Mata, Fellaini or Pienaar, Nolan or Morrison & the 'essential' Baines. I've seen a lot teams like that, tbh.

He surely wont start all ManU games. Nani, Valencia, Young (once fit), Kagawa, RVP, Roonpig, Welbeck, Hernandez will share gametime.
Of course they wont all play as much as before but players liek RVP might be "rested" in easy games so others can get some gametime and not cry too much 🙂

This is gonna hurt quite a few including me when the time comes, probably in the next half of the season, assuming United manage to do well in CL group-stage this year.

During CL knockout-games, I expect Sir Alex to rotate RVP often, if his other strikers are also fit. Will be hard to give him the armband then, but it's too early to worry now.

RVP ties up too much cash and that denies me the flexibility to do transfers. I am currently pursuing a strategy of 'transfer-rotating' strikers on a short term basis with the fixtures in mind. It has worked great so far with Jelly,Ba,Berba,Lambert.

RVP isn't fixture proof, it's a silly notion to think so. You cannot cite that example of Arsenal-Chelsea showdown last year, to show that. He is just like everyone else, scores higher against lower-ranked teams, than higher-ranked teams.

I hate to rid this anti-rvp bandwagon, but my three green arrows coincide with dropping RVP out of the team. When his fixtures ease up (read gw11/12), I will simply downgrade one of my 9+mids to 4.5 mid, and upgrade one of my forwards to him. But for now, am very glad to live without him.

okay. the notion 'fixture-proof' may be an overstatement, but he's a big game player no doubt (he also score ton of goals against Liverpool and during North London derby), so i would disagree with the notion "scores higher against lower-ranked teams, than higher-ranked teams".

if you have plan to bring him later, it means you are really tempted by his scoring ability and attacking returns.. the one thing that has put you off big time is the heavy price tag, i might say.

let's see how he manage it against Chelsea & Arsenal, where he will surely starts.

For the future, it really helps if you keep an open-mind to such things. Many on this site have pre-conceived notions, which they are just not willing to change. I cannot empasize on the importance of being flexible and open-minded. Basically I think keeping RVP despite his difficult fixtures may turn out to be a good decision, but to 'lol' at those who don't have RVP is just plain silly. It's early in the season, but if you look at the top 10 fpl teams, I doubt you will find RVP in more than 2 of them.

i never 'lol' at those who do not have RVP. i know FPL-wise, i cannot even guarantee myself to start picking him now if i dont have him form the start. it's only the thought of getting rid of him at this particular moment bemuses me a little. Well, everyone has their own reasons for their action. i might kill myself next week if Berba does his hattrick when i refuse to jump into that b/w now. haha, just kidding. nice discussion, btw. cheeers.

Does anyone play FUT? I'm trying to decide if Ozil is worth his 30k price tag, or if I should grab Gotze and Gomez for around the same total.

I have Huntelaar, Klose, Pizarro, and Mandzukic as my rotating strikers already.

Isn't 5-2-2-1 a little too defensive, or do the wing-backs manage to attack a lot? Btw talking about killer players, Doumbia for 82 is incredible! I built a team based on Russian League, but it's already the best possible there (highest player is 85, that's it). Should I now sell all my players, to start afresh - perhaps Serie A, or EPL team?

Bundesliga is the way to go imo. I was thinking about building a russian team on the side, just for fun. EPL players are expensive, and I don't know about Serie A too much.

5-2-2-1 plays like a 5-2-3 and the wingbacks are great because they have high pace. I've blasted plenty in with Fuchs and Alaba as LWB. Not so much with Gebre Selassie or Trashe though.

He's probablly not worth it, cause with the players you've listed, he won't do wonders for your squad chemistry wise, unless if they're German.. so Kroos is ok. But I'd go for Gotze/Gomez.

a 13.4 million player who we cant captain for easy games(fear of bein rested) and tough games(err.. their tough, better options elsewhere) is a luxury imo. I'm guessin most who own him on here are Manu fans who enjoy watchin the game with him in their team. The danger of gettin attached to players is very common in fpl

I partly agree with both sides of this. RVP is a monster FPL player. He will most likely be the highest scoring player again this year and will have some crazy scoring gameweeks and is as fixture proof as they come making him a reliable captain choice. However he is very expensive and will be rested and rotated. The problem with this is that as he costs so much he disrupts the balance of your team so when he does get a rest you only have the dregs to come on for him.

    RVP plays UCL games on
23rd October (Stoke home game 3 days b4)
7th November ( A must play Arsenal game on 3rd and an easy Villa game on 10th)
20th November ( Sandwiched between a Norwich game and a QPR home game)
5th December ( Has a run of West Ham @ home 28th November, Reading Away 1st December, must play Mci game on 8th December)

As a RVP owner i am scared of rotation. it'll hurt when a 13.4 mill player is rested for even 2 of those

come on, since GW2, he has started all the games, except for Wigan at OT.. heck Fergie could have played Rafael on top and still won the game.

I can see SAF giving more time to Wellbeck and Hernandez against the likes of Braga, Cluj and prefers RVP to play more minutes in the League.. (tho he may start the European fixtures, but i dont think he will last..)

i dont do statistics at work, so the fpl ponts per million value is not my niche, and not going to be my thing.

i'd most probably wont captain him against the lesser opposition because i'd have better captain choices during that GW (santi, mata, bale, jelly, etc.) but i know that if MAnu goes riot in those easy matches, i'd have RVP in there to nick a few points. =)

owning a 13+ million player and not captainin him is a death toll. If you captainin other guys then say RVP goes berserk and scores 7 goals in the next 5 games.. and say Berbs/Ba/Jelavic etc score 4 goals.. that's just 15-20 points difference which i'm sure the spare cash would have covered.. eg Silva over Nolan, Baines over 4.0 defender etc

well, your point is valid. But RVP as captain is a safe choice every week, i am willing to do that more often than not. but if i feel like giving it a punt by handing the armband to other player like Santi (lets say for the upcoming GW or against Villa in GW13 for the fear that RVP may be rested), i dont think it's a big problem to me.

As you point out due to his price and ownershio, owning him is a risk (especially if he pulls another 20 minute cameo) but not owning him is also a risk as he's one of few players who could crazy at any given time. Also let's remember last year when people refused to won or captain RvP due to his fixtures, and then watched in horror as he stuck at hat-trick past Chelsea. Knowing he is nailed on to play the big games is part of the reason I'm keeping him. Should United beat Braga (which they may do without RvP anyway) I can see him not starting in the CL and only coming on if needed,

Yep, he may or he may not, to captain him or to not.......to have RVP these days will cause you a mini existensial crisis in this silly game. I'm not anti RVP myself, but his numbers so far don't scream for me to have him in my team. With players of his price, I want the stats to virtually shout, wail and beg on their bended knees for me to have them. Sadly RVP's are pretty cold fish & with the myriad of options up front for Utd it's a no go for me now. So, as I'm just starting this game, I'm not for putting him in my team, but will monitor him keenly if this condition changes, e.g., injuries with other Utd fwds

Search for buy now at 300, sell for 350. EPL players sell for a lot. Just buy low sell high really.

You got it. If you're just starting, I would sell all that you have except a few gold players from the same league/nation and build a decent squad from that by finding bargain players in the auctions. Then you can start winning matches and slowly build a great one.

Santi, mata and bale look a class above in the midfield ranks this season. I think "season keeper" is a silly term but those 3 are about as close as it gets. They have all the hallmarks of the last midfield holy trinity stevie, frank and ron. They could well shape our squads for the next 2/3 seasons.

I'm not entirely convinced by Mata myself, he's a good option don't get me wrong but I think Hazard and Oscar will steal points off him throughout the season. I agree on Bale & Santi though - the latter is basically a cheaper Fabregas..

      Hmm, I disagree...

The Holy Trinity scored goals almost week in week out for a similar price, relative to the year...

Apart from Bale (who himself is a little unpredictable), I don't see consistent goal scoring with those 3 players... a steady stream of assists, yes... but not goals... which is what you are saying when comparing them to the Holy Trinity....

Modern day midfielders are expected to score a lot but then again isn't their primary duty to assist? If they yield above ten goals a season I say they've done good! Not everyone can live up to Lamp's former glorious standards.

this article really makes me doubt getting HBA in if his threat is a low as it says. Yet, the United game aside, Barfa has delivered returns in every home game, and their home fixtures look really good for the next few. Could easily tide me over until Ramirez gets back

I have Adam Johnson, who rotates perfectly with him anyway. But bringing him this week for a hit seems like madness if I bench him.

Valencia and HBA rotate nicely till GW16. This could be an option as well. Its certainly one I may consider at some point.

It was the same last season I think. It's typical of how he plays the game and his role in newcastle's tactics. His goals aren't reliant on constant shooting. I'd expect more big hauls at home against weaker teams

I think HBA is the type of player who will improve as the season goes on. He still has a lot to prove as there is so much hype about him and he has that flair factor. I'm hoping while he's in my team he can repeat some of that magic...but I'm equally skeptical about it.

It's very much a team sport. Practice is more about developing tactics and tweaking to suit the track and conditions and overcoming hurdles for most.

    2 FT's.. Team linked
    A) Nolan in for Fellaini (Save 2 for next week)
    B) Silva/Mata and Berbatov IN for Tevez and Fellaini

I know Tevez will start but i need money to upgrade Fell.. and since i took the trouble to get RVP in GW 2 i might as well keep him

I think I would do B with Silva. I would like both of those myself. It's a tough choice because Nolan and Tevez could do just as much damage.

Thinking long term though, I like B

I'm not sure about that, I'm sure you could get some decent speakers hooked up to your TV system and play music through that.

I have a headphone jack on the back of my 23" samsung and some computer speakers that work nicely haha.
