In the first of three Numbers Game articles focusing on goal threat, we examine the leading midfielders on show with seven Gameweeks down. We investigate averages in our own ICT Index, before probing further to cast an eye over some key indicators amongst the current crop of top 20 midfielders for goal attempts thus far.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Keep Ba, he has good fixtures... If you want Berba downgrade RVP or Aguero...

I would downgrade Aguero to Berba, use the cash for Michu to Silva/Mata/Hazard...

there's no denying that Reading has one of the best fixtures ahead.. liv FUL qpr NOR EVE wig villa.. i know i know, we dont fancy them to win a lot of those.. someone has even said "don’t think I will have a single Reading player this entire season" ..but surely they will get a few goals right? i mean, they are not as bad as Norwich, going forward! They lost 2-4 against leaders Chelsea, and were held 2-2 against the likes of Newcastle and Swansea.. so if they know how to score (but not to win), why must we write off
players like Pog, McAnuff, Kebe & hunt entirely? surely they''ll be cheap and good differential.. just my 2 cents.

Yeah but last season when R Taylor was around, Santon kept his place. Taylor was played in midfield few times. I don't know but feel Santon is better due to the fact he is injury free and able to play both flanks as Simpson and Taylor chill out on the treatment table haha

No way in hell would Ryan Taylor displace Santon. Raylor was never first choice last season, he was just first choice deputy across most of the defence and midfield. Every time he was about to lose his place to someone coming back from injury someone else would pick up a knock and he'd take theirs!

I went for Santon at the start of the season mainly because we were trying to sign a new centre back which would have put Saylor under the threat of being benched. If I'd known we wouldn't sign anyone I'd probably have gone for Saylor as I do expect goals at some point.

I'm hoping we manage to make a defensive signing or two in the January transfer window which might open this issue back up again but I suppose the Jan WC can deal with that 🙂

We (Newcastle) have been looking leaky all season as we haven't been able to put a settled line up out. If Saylor and Colo (and Krul) can get back fit and nobody else breaks down then I'd expect the defence to tighten up.

Saylor has always been a big threat from set pieces, I'd be amazed if he didn't end the season with at least a couple of goals (injuries permitting).

From watching the matches over the last couple of seasons Santon likes to bomb forward but his goal threat is from distance - cutting inside across the defence and taking a pot shot. So far he hasn't scored and hasn't come terribly close, might get lucky soon though (fingers crossed - I own him!)

I'd say Saylor actually offers a more reliable route to attacking points. (This is without looking at the stats though, just based on my views of the games)

Hardly the time to be getting rid of Silva.

If anyone should be downgrade it would be either Mata or RVP but the latter is a bit of a gamble given RVP's undoubted quality.

Personally, would switch Mata out (Nolan not a bad option) and upgrade defence to bring in Baines

There's really no-one else in his league among defenders.

Yeah i know. No defender are on Set Pieces as much as Baines and Everton ARE a good side. The price is a real killer. I'm struggling to find the funds to get him in. One obvious way is Mata out to perhaps Morrison/Nolan/ for Baines. That's an option but it leaves me without any Chelski players. Worrying!

I've only got Torres atm and I'm not too keen on holding on to him with the fixutres as they are. Make no mistake that Chelsea are scoring well but they don't yet have the look of a dominant side that can beat anyone and points may be a lot harder to come by. Add to that the fact that Europe will mean rotations and that they spread their points around, and their players start to lose their immediate appeal.

I just did a comparison of Cazorla to Baines. Ignoring blocked shots Cazorla is comfortably ahead on shots on goal (20 to 5) but shots on target are closer (9 to 5).

Baines just edges Cazorla on chances created (and I believe Cazorla tops the midfielder list)

You need to look at the stats this year, Remember Baines was 7.0!

He is a defender but the most creative PLAYER in the league, with Evertons fixtures and his hot form you would be a fool not to have him.

HBA is expensive Berbilly, and he also didnt deliver as people expect (got nothing vs Norwich, Reading). Actually I've not seen him this year, just look at the stats. But I see you like him (told me about HBA yesterday too), how is he playing, compare to Peanut? He's RW or free role, in the hole?

            'expert' 😆

Ben Arfa is always a threat, it's the nature of his game to try to create or score goals every time he picks up the ball. We've not been at our best at all this season but he's been one of our few bright spots.

That said, the current 4-4-2 restricts him slightly and can see him starved of the ball at times, he'd benefit hugely from a change in tactics but I don't see it happening any time soon, Pardew is determined to get Ba and Cisse firing together.

I think he's worth it because of his high involvement in most of our goal scoring chances - if we improve so should his returns. I think Nolan is performing as well as he will all season and is more likely to tail off, especially with the coming fixtures.

              Yup, me too.

And I think you want someone an attacking threat against Norwich.

Defoe to Ba yes, but definitely should get Cazorla, when arsenal score he is always involved!

I think it's in our best interest if they do...

Kinda strange to see them play each other again so soon though...

Morning chaps/chapesses. Thinking of hitting the magic WC button....

Would Hazard and Tevez >> Mata and Aguero be a little bit of a sideways move?

    Just toying at the mo

    Cheers

Keep Tevez over Aguero this week, Kun is travelling back from internationals and less likely to start with CL following.

Me too and everything I have done this season has back fired. I strongly recommend you all start bringing in Aguero.

Have Ba in my wildcard team at the moment. Worth a one week punt on Suarez against Reading then get Ba?

I'd say so. Tyne & Wear derbies are usually low scoring affairs so I'm not expecting much out of Ba this week.

Is Zamora -- Berbatov worth a 4 pointer? Absolutely hate doin it. It means Berbs will have to score and get the bonus to justify the hit

no worries, thanks for the reply. QPR had West Ham and West brom and scored 3 goals. Bobby hardly touched the ball in either game. 180 minutes of life wasted when I could have been on the internet!!!!!!

I would Berba's Baps will probably pay you bank 3 of the 4 points. Bobby will only leave you with tears.

The most embarrassing player you've owned this season?

Its shootout between Rio and Lamps for me

What matches will you all be watching?

I think I might watch Russia v Portugal, the first half of Spain v Belarus, and Macedonia v Croatia or Serbia v Belgium

    Any scouts on?

Love the MF goal threat article. Thanks.
I would very much like to see a similar article on DEF attacking threat - the Demel vs. Cuellar vs Rangel (etc.) equation is central to our success, but we tend not to make these decisions based on data.
Anyone else like to see something along these lines?

      Hi HRB

I can see just such an article in drafts so I think you're in luck, though I don't have any insight into when it'll be published.
