In a season where the attacking exploits of a number of defenders have been quick to catch the collective eye, John Arne Riise has remained firmly under the Fantasy radar. Already, we’ve witnessed the unlikely scenario where defenders have returned the highest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points haul in five of the opening seven Gameweeks, with Branislav Ivanovic and Leighton Baines vindicating those who opted for big-money investment at the back:

The Fulham full-back has also impressed going forward. So far, a total of three assists is higher than any other defender, with Riise’s left-flank forays thriving in a team full of attacking menace under Martin Jol. Indeed, only Man United have found the net more times than the Cottagers, with a total of 15 goals on par with the likes of City and Chelsea.

With two clean sheets and a couple of assists in his opening three home games, Riise has so far averaged over seven FPL points per appearance at Craven Cottage as Fulham continue the strong home form produced under Jol last time round. On the road, though, while they have conceded two or more goals in three of their four fixtures, an upturn in attacking intent hints at a cause for optimism – already, they have scored half the number of away goals as they managed last season.

Picking up points at both ends of the pitch, Riise is second only to Damien Duff for points accrued for Fulham this season and he now is faced with an enticing schedule that could well bring him under scrutiny. The Norwegian has three home fixtures in the next five (AVL, EVE, RDG) and also faces a Gameweek 9 trip to a Reading side that have no wins and three points from their opening six fixtures.

Priced at 5.5 in FPL and 6.2 in the Sky Sports game, Riise is the most expensive option amongst Jol’s defence but his displays to date have justified those respective price tags. The left-back should not only comfortably surpass his total of five assist last time round but looks capable of bettering it over the next few Gameweeks, if he can continues in his current rich vein of form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

          I dodgded a bullet there.

I also dodged Bale and Fellaini's points and had the joy of RVP and Dyer.

This means I should buy Hangeland as a sacrifice to the greater good ( and I hate those )

Why is/was Hangeland such a bad call? Just because he's not scored? Joint 8th highest threat according to the ICT index.

to be a threat you actually have to attack the ball from set-pieces something that, until last week Hangeland wasn't doing. If you have a team as unreliable for CS as Fulham you want some attacking returns or saves to justify the outlay.

In fairness I haven't watched any Fulham games to make a comment, just going off the stats/ICT index.

Still considering shifting Hangeland to Wilson/Hughes to free funds for my attack but if I was targeting a Fulham defender I wouldn't get Riise.

The remaining 15 participants for the 2013 African Cup of Nations are being decided this weekend in the second leg of the qualifying playoffs. This will obviously have an impact on African players who ply their trade in the Premier League.

So far today, Mali have comfortably beaten Botswana, Ghana have eliminated Malawi and Zambia have just knocked out Uganda 9-8 on penalties in a nail-biter in Kampala after the aggregate score finished 1-1. This gives us a current picture of:

Qualified: South Africa (hosts), Ghana, Mali, Zambia

Second legs to be played later today:
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    Nigeria vs Liberia (2:2)
    Tunisia vs Sierra Leone (2:2)
    Senegal vs Ivory Coast (2:4)
    Morocco vs Mozambique (0:2)

    Playing tomorrow:
    ------------------------
    Angola vs Zimbabwe (1:3)
    Cameroon vs Cape Verde (0:2)
    Niger vs Guinea (0:1)
    Ethiopia vs Sudan (3:5)
    Algeria vs Libya (1:0)
Equatorial Guinea vs Congo DR (0:4)
    Togo vs Gabon (1:1)
Burkina Faso vs Central African Republic (0:1)

JOA, do you expect Sagna to regain his starting place from Jenko? Am looking to offload Hangeland next week, really want to get an Arsenal defender in. Can't afford Verm, Kos and Mert will be rotated, and I'm trying to spend a bit less than Gibbs costs (i.e. 5.5 or less). Sagna at 5.4 and with ridiculously low ownership due to his inury could be just the man.

So you already have Silva? Unless your on a WC I wouldn't transfer him out for Sterling. Sterling is a bench player IMO, I wouldn't start him every week.

Maybe post your whole team (or link) and transfers/money in bank so we can have a look

i am on wildcard, currently have silva cazorla bale pienarr nolan in my draft. I can take out silva for sterling to fund fletcher (or berbatov ) to aguer0, means i bank less points basically

That's a tough one. I guess I'd prefer Silva & Berbatov to Sterling & Aguero.

Not sure if I prefer Silva & Fletcher to Sterling & Aguero though.

Ok, having seen that, you should pick one player from your front 8 who you will bench most/all weeks (Sterling is a good bet).

I'd therefore do Nolan > Sterling and work from that.

Not sure how I feel about Riise and the rest of the Fulham defence. Riise undoubtedly has a history of attacking returns, but then so does Hangeland for £0.5m less. I'd argue that Hangeland is equally good value.

That said, if Hughes can keep his place then £4.5m is a lot more interesting and can be rotated for those Fulham away games.

Currently sitting on Hangeland and considering doing Hangeland > Wilson (already have Bego) to afford Lambert > Berbatov.

Anyone reckon Hangeland > Hughes would be equally as good/better?

Even at 4.5, I'd only consider a FUL def as part of a lerger rotation / form based plan. Too many other better defenders in more defensive teams.

Now if Riise were 5.0 that would have greater value.

That's my point. At £4.5m you can afford to bench Hughes for the away games where he'll most likely get 1 point and use someone else in those weeks who is more likely to score points. Suppose it depends on how much they cost and what the rotation is like. I know for a fact Reading rotate well with Fulham but I'd rather play Hangeland every week that play a Reading playing player.

And that's the prob with many FUL rotations, unfortunately.

At the other end, the CHE home/ away thing may be crazy*

*It may also be genius. But I'm sticking with crazy.

Na, wouldn't pay that much for a Chelsea defender to rotate them. There'd only be a handful of game where Hughes would make it off the bench, making his £4.5m price a bit too much to own.

The Arsenal defence have gone past their peak. With Wenger adamant to keep changing his back 4 line-up, they will leak goals as shown vs Che & Whu.

No replacements have yet really popped their head up enough to make it worthwhile. He has something like a 50% conversion rate on his chances. City aside his fixtures aren't that bad, Swansea will score goals and he will be the most likely man to score.

I just don't fancy Rooney playing deeper. Jelly needs no explanation and Silva seems to be on the cusp of fulfilling his potential, and has lovely fixtures.

    Guys, I need some advices.

    Here’s my current team:

    Vorm (Ruddy)

Ivanovic - Vermaelen - Baines (Demel, McCarthy)

    Pienaar - Cazorla - Hazard - Michu - Morrison

    Tevez - Ba (Di Santo)

Have 2FT, and I’m considering to do this:
    1) Verma > ShawX, Di Santo > Berba, Hazard > Mata (-4 pts)
    2) Vorm > Bego and Michu > Silva (-4 pts) next gameweek.

Is it good or bad move? Any thoughts?

    Thank you. Cheers! 😀

      1) looks quite reasonable without doing Hazard-Mata, unless that transfer is required to make the other 2 transfers financially viable.

Yes, need to do Hazard - Mata so I can afford Silva (or Bale) next week to replace Michu (and I'll still have Chelsea coverage in midfield).

Or I could just simply use 2FT this week for Verma > ShawX / Huth / Riise (considering Stoke and Fulham has decent upcoming fixtures) and upgrade Di Santo to Berba.

I'd stick with the 2 transfers tbh, even just getting Wilson intead of Shawx/Huth to save a bit of cash. That's as long as you don't need to play a Stoke defender in the upcoming gameweek.
