In a season where the attacking exploits of a number of defenders have been quick to catch the collective eye, John Arne Riise has remained firmly under the Fantasy radar. Already, we’ve witnessed the unlikely scenario where defenders have returned the highest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points haul in five of the opening seven Gameweeks, with Branislav Ivanovic and Leighton Baines vindicating those who opted for big-money investment at the back:

The Fulham full-back has also impressed going forward. So far, a total of three assists is higher than any other defender, with Riise’s left-flank forays thriving in a team full of attacking menace under Martin Jol. Indeed, only Man United have found the net more times than the Cottagers, with a total of 15 goals on par with the likes of City and Chelsea.

With two clean sheets and a couple of assists in his opening three home games, Riise has so far averaged over seven FPL points per appearance at Craven Cottage as Fulham continue the strong home form produced under Jol last time round. On the road, though, while they have conceded two or more goals in three of their four fixtures, an upturn in attacking intent hints at a cause for optimism – already, they have scored half the number of away goals as they managed last season.

Picking up points at both ends of the pitch, Riise is second only to Damien Duff for points accrued for Fulham this season and he now is faced with an enticing schedule that could well bring him under scrutiny. The Norwegian has three home fixtures in the next five (AVL, EVE, RDG) and also faces a Gameweek 9 trip to a Reading side that have no wins and three points from their opening six fixtures.

Priced at 5.5 in FPL and 6.2 in the Sky Sports game, Riise is the most expensive option amongst Jol’s defence but his displays to date have justified those respective price tags. The left-back should not only comfortably surpass his total of five assist last time round but looks capable of bettering it over the next few Gameweeks, if he can continues in his current rich vein of form.

    The watchlist...

RVP is top, despite being in B form & having tough fixtures.

Ba is 5th, despite being in A form & having good fixtures.

    This doesnt make sense.

Will be interesting to see if people hang onto Michu after the Wigan game...will strongly depend on him scoring I guess. If he scores lots will be inclined to keep and the casuals no doubt wont be looking at the fixtures like most who visit this site.

It is worth noting that he does seem like more of an opportunist than a naturally creative player. A lot of his goals have been down to being in the right place at the right time and that's probably why he has had such an amazing conversion rate so far. He probably wont create many chances for himself but rather be in the mix of things to get the final touch on balls into the box etc or take advantage of defensive lapses like in the West Ham game. Swansea's fixtures have also been relatively easy so far so he's probably on a bit of a purple patch as a result.

I think he scored 15 goals last season so he's well on the way to repeating that. If he equals that he'll be worth having at different times in the season for sure. He also benefits from Swansea's lack of firepower up front meaning there's more reliance on his efforts to win them games. I haven't owned him this season and regret not getting him in GW2 or doing more research pre-season...as it would have been clear he was a bargain. As it is I hope there is a mini exodus at some point so I can look at getting him at a more opportune tim

atm I plan on keeping him, mostly due to a lack of alternate options. I will either just do Hangeland to Sagna or I will maybe look at moving Adam Johnson on.

I am monitoring Walters and Taarabt as possible replacments

like you said, if he doesn't score this weekend I think he'll drop a lot...he was even getting sold before last weekends easy fixture...this is the first time in weeks that he's got a positive NTI

i've had him from gw1 but might drop him after next weekend and pick him up later unless he racks up a big score and will gain value

there's a perfect replacement out there i think it's nolan and morison...one has SOT & Wigan after next gw and the other has the same fixtures 2 gw's after that....perfect time for michu's value to drop for 4 weeks and then grab him again

Need a bit of help, I'm lost on what to do with my team at the moment. Other than Tevez>Jelavic, every transfer I've made in recent weeks has been a disaster and I'm seeing a lot of red arrows. Anyway, my team is currently:

    Foster
    Baines, Rafael, Boyce
    Bale, Cazorla, Fellaini, Michu
    RVP, Lambert, Jelavic(c)

    Begovic, Guthrie, McAuley, Gorkss

Have 1FT and .9 in the bank. Depending on the Fellaini situation (selling Morrison for him 2 GWs ago was a big mistake), I'm thinking it may be best just to do a boring Guthrie to Puncheon/Sterling move.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I am concerned about only being able to field 2 defenders this week, since Zaba may well be rested after 90mins v Uruguay and flying back to UK...

Clyne may well play, but I don't want to take the chance, and even if he does I'll only get 1/2 pts at most...

I'd much rather cancel my plan to make 2FTs next week and move it forward to this week...

Zaba -> Hughes/Riise/Rafael are all considerations... it can't be Wilson since I'd prefer a good fixture this week...

    Thoughts?

I see, having Gunter is a real pain! Hmmm I'd still look long term over a punt on a 6 pointer this week. I mean like you said...'it can't be Wilson since I'd prefer a good fixture this week...will this not mean you'll be making another transfer the next week? That said I think Fulham have a CS in them over the next 2...

Hughes was in my plans anyway for a cheap 2x2 rotation until Jan WC...

By moving his transfer forward I can avoid the Zab no show and get him in for 3 decent home games in next five... with Wilson coming in for Rangel next week...

Not a bad plan at all. Only thing worth considering is Man Citys fixtures do get very good and even if Zab doesn't play every game he might have a good few CS in him soon...

Even if he does play, I can't see a CS at WBA... but can definitely see at least 2 in the next 4 games after...

    Santi Bale Silva Pienaar Sterling
    RVP Berba Lambert

After significant tinkering, my only gripes are

    1) I end up losing Jelly. On the plus side, Soton's fixtures remain solid after Everton's get difficult for that GW 14-17 stretch.

    2) The defense isn't very strong although the midfield should make up for it. It allows me to ship one of the big 3 MF out to upgrade elsewhere if needed.

I have. The only reason why I felt comfortable with this at all is because Lambert is on form and Soton's fixtures look great.

The alternative, keeping the money equal, would be to replace Pienaar and Lambert with Jelly and Kac or a similarly priced MF, leaving

    Hello guys, your oppinion please:

    Baines - Rangel - Clark - Demel - Bennett

Is it worth it to get Evans as my ManU defensive cover?

I don't want Rafael, because guys i want to catch all have him. I'm just not sure he is 100% nailed on, since Smalling is about to return (i know he usually plays RB but i think he can also be used as a CB, right?).

I was thinking Bennett -> Evans GW 8 (have 2 FT) and Rangel -> Wilson GW 9

Or should i just forget about Evans and maybe get Gibbs?

Throwing this out there, in the battle of the big hitters, surely Aguero has to come out on top over RVP?

Cheaper by over 2m, and you'd have to think out of the Man City forwards, the most likely to play on any given week. In his limited game time so far, very impressive stats.

RVP used to have set piece dominance and guaranteed minutes over Aguero, but that does not look likely anymore.

Of course, rotation could equally ruin Aguero as an FPL option. In that regard RVP and Aguero seem about equal.

Now I know people will point to Tevez as Man City coverage, but I think it's safe to say in the long run Aguero will get more minutes, is the much better player and has everything in the locker to justify his cost, barring Mancini screwing it up.

Id go as far as saying, Aguero is the best FPL player in the game, bar his manager messing around with him. (Which makes him a risk to own at the moment)

To sum up, Aguero's great. Mancini - not so much. Why I don't mind paying 0.5 million more to get him in after they're knocked out.

Another downside for Aguero is that Silva is looking like a viable option again, whereas there's no other United player you could get in (from an attacking perspective)

I think it's safe to suggest Aguero is the main man. From a stats perspective, Aguero brings the better goal threat and assist potential. In the last game, Aguero nearly outdid Tevez in less then half the game time.

Not to mention penalty duty. Lets not forget, Aguero notched 30ish goals in La Liga. He is the real deal. (Not say Tevez is bad, most would look average in comparison to Aguero)

The RVP situation has been talked about so much that it just goes around in circles. IF you want him just get him, there is no need to start this chat again!

Welcome to the minefield, careful where you step. Short answer, no one knows. Long answer, no one knows.

Currently the stats say he is not worth it and does not look like improving on his current form, which he is doing well to maintain.

But united could improve and they have great fixtures from GW10 onward.

I hazard on the no side to RVP.

trying to find a balance (but not succeeding):

    Foster, Bego
    Baines, JEvans, Cuellar, Barnett, McCartney
    Cazorla, Bale, Nolan, Sterling, Puncheon
    RvP, Aguero, Berba

    0.0m on the bank.

    thoughts?

Forget classic theory about balance. Now try.

You dont need to have 2 big defenders and 2 cheap mid + 1 mid priced. There are other options. Pick the players rather than their prices.
