In a season where the attacking exploits of a number of defenders have been quick to catch the collective eye, John Arne Riise has remained firmly under the Fantasy radar. Already, we’ve witnessed the unlikely scenario where defenders have returned the highest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points haul in five of the opening seven Gameweeks, with Branislav Ivanovic and Leighton Baines vindicating those who opted for big-money investment at the back:

The Fulham full-back has also impressed going forward. So far, a total of three assists is higher than any other defender, with Riise’s left-flank forays thriving in a team full of attacking menace under Martin Jol. Indeed, only Man United have found the net more times than the Cottagers, with a total of 15 goals on par with the likes of City and Chelsea.

With two clean sheets and a couple of assists in his opening three home games, Riise has so far averaged over seven FPL points per appearance at Craven Cottage as Fulham continue the strong home form produced under Jol last time round. On the road, though, while they have conceded two or more goals in three of their four fixtures, an upturn in attacking intent hints at a cause for optimism – already, they have scored half the number of away goals as they managed last season.

Picking up points at both ends of the pitch, Riise is second only to Damien Duff for points accrued for Fulham this season and he now is faced with an enticing schedule that could well bring him under scrutiny. The Norwegian has three home fixtures in the next five (AVL, EVE, RDG) and also faces a Gameweek 9 trip to a Reading side that have no wins and three points from their opening six fixtures.

Priced at 5.5 in FPL and 6.2 in the Sky Sports game, Riise is the most expensive option amongst Jol’s defence but his displays to date have justified those respective price tags. The left-back should not only comfortably surpass his total of five assist last time round but looks capable of bettering it over the next few Gameweeks, if he can continues in his current rich vein of form.

Worth taking a hit on this lot? 0.8m in the bank.

    Vorm

Baines - Rafael - Jenkinson (Hughes, Demel)

Santi - Gervinho - Michu - Sterling (Fellaini)

    RVP - Jelavic - Tevez

bad move...you´d dump Gervinho for their run of soft opponents for Tot/Citeh/Chelsea's run of tough one's. Insanity....

Michu/Felllani for Oscar is the only remote move I'd make in that direction. That would leave you a little cheddar to make Jenkinson move in a week or two.

But City's attacking points will be vastly more spread out that Spurs'. City could stick 5 past Villa and Silva may get an assist

Spurs could beat Wigan 2-0 and Bale could score both, would you rather have 1 assist or 2 goals?

And what about the other 4 in their next 5? Silva will come into his stride without a problem against GWs 8-12 competition. I could easily see Citeh averaging 4 goals in those matches.

I think neither will score much, outside of Bale maybe short track bullying SOT in GW9...But I would rather have Silva for their next 5; so I don't think it is crazy getting rid of Bale considering he's due to go dry for a spell.

To be to the point :
Long term? Unlikely, unless Szczesny fsks up horribly for a few GWs together.

Information that you might not want to know :
Wenger already said that Mannone can be seen as a serious rival to Szcz, but that's obviously a lie. For now. However, he's been in decent form and he could play at least in the cup games, but that's no use to us from an FPL point of view.
Also, most Arsenal fans are hoping Martinez (youth keeper) gets a chance as he's showing immense potential. Add to that the fact that Fabianski is to come back in a few weeks and that further causes problems.

Yeah but with good budget, and non rotated options up front, you can afford 3 or even 4 heavy hitters in mid....

assuming you spend 35 mil on def/GK...and with a front line of say.. crouch berba jelly - you can easily afford 4 heavy hitters + bench, or 3 heavy hitters and 2 man rotation

Besides, I don't think you have Newcastle coverage (else you would have mentioned it, right?) and HBA will give you a bit of cash in the bank to change your team later too.

If you've noticed how Liverpool have set up under BR, you can see that Gerrard is no more the focal point of their attacks. It's not like the liverpool of old. Also Sterling is way, way cheaper and almost as nailed on.
However Gerrard is on set pieces, but I don't think that extra cash is worth the gamble. And it's not like their fixtures are too kind anyway.

Whelan....i know....bit off the wall, but something just makes sense about it....or have i been staring at my screen too long?

        - he gets game time
        - no Ronaldo granted, but has got a couple of assists to his name
        - get Utd out the way next GW and Stoke have a great little run of fixtures
        - Kaca is cheaper, but already have 2 Fulham (Schwarz n Berba)
        - Sterling is cheaper, but not convinced with the Liverpool thing

    Why are people selling Tevez?
Not only do they have great fixtures coming up, but Tevez is well rested and will definitely start, Aguero could be rested, and you're never sure about Balotelli or Dzeko. Also he's pretty cheap and I don't see what other City coverage people could have. Silva isn't in form.

You say he hasn't scored for four GWs? I say he's picked up two assists and two BPs in three of those. Only once has he scored less than 4 all season.

While I see your point...you have to remember that nearly 50% of all players owned Tevez. The exodus was inevitable. There needed to be a balancing act. He plays for a team where there are 4 world class strikers competing for 2 spots. There are other striking options out there and people are beginning to look elsewhere.

He was 50% owned because a certain Mr.Aguero was injured making him literally a must have. As it stands he's still owned by over 40% which is the highest owned striker by a good distance. I saw this coming a mile away despite his consistent returns. He's now almost what he was when I got him and easy to get back so I wouldn't be too bothered by it.

Not this minute no but how could you ignore a player like Tevez at his price? He will always be an option...I just chose a plan and am sticking to it at the moment. Plus I made value off him and didn't think selling would bother me too much as Aguero was back meaning Tevez is just not captain material week in week out.

fellaini and dyer are the ones im trying to get rid of but have no idea when they're going to fall. Any idea which site is more accurate ?

How many changes does my team need?

    Federici / Foster
    Rangel Lescott Baines Hughes McCartney
    Bale Michu Pienaar Kagawa Kacanikilic
    Tevez Torres Graham

    2 FTs, 2.6m in bank

My original intention was two make just one change this week so that next week I have two FTs again and then I can sell Graham + Rangel.

    Thoughts?

Alreet lads. Has there been much discussion on here about giroud? I'm, actually considering him as an alternative to berba. I would love to bring in a 3rd arsenal player for their awesome run of fixtures. Do we expect him to start most games now? Other option would be jelavic

There has been some discussion, mainly from Lateriser.

Giroud has looked terrible, I wouldn't get him after one decent game. Jelavic also has great fixtures and has scored consistently well for Everton.

To be fair, he has been getting into threatening positions. His finishing has been very poor.

Maybe he will be a decent option but I wouldn't spend that much on a striker that isn't nailed on and hasn't done much so far. If he goes on a run of form maybe I'd change my mind but at the moment I'd have no confidence in owning him.

I understand where you're coming from here...but I look at his stats from last year, his positioning and his movement and I see goals. He can only improve. People will assume he's a poor player because he's only scored one goal but that would be naive. With Cazorla there he will get so many chances.

I agree he could become massive for Arsenal.. I have no problem with anything you have stated here.. It was the earlier comment that he hasn't looked terrible and just hadn't scored before the last game... That was all I completely disagree with..

Worth a 4 pt. hit to do Hazard -> Cazorla, Yaya -> Bale? Or just do the first one? Team is:

      Foster - Federici,
      Baines - McAuley - Cuellar - Demel - Clyne,
      Hazard - Yaya - Pienaar - Michu - Guthrie,

I might do Berba (c) over Cazorla what do you think abt that?

Really like this team, very similar to mine in a lot of positions.

I have the same captaincy dilemma and atm i've gone for Cazorla with Berbs vice.

              Gibbs Jags Rafael
              Sterling Hazzard Felli Michu
              RVP Tevez Jelly

This is before transfers - looking ok for this GW? I am thinking Invo (Che) to Jags.

Is this the real debate going on:

              2 Big Hitter Mids
              +
              RVP

              3 Big Hitter Mids
              +
              No RVP

              ?

You can easily squeeze RVP with 3 big-hit MID.

I can see how 3BHM and RVP is doable no doubt...I just wonder will the BHM's be reliable to sacrifice a bit of upgrading in other areas.

Not looking for RMT or comments, but for illustration ...

                  Jaaskalainen, Begovic
                  Baines, Gibbs, Demel, Clyne, Davies
                  Hazard, Cazorla, Bale, Michu, Guthrie
                  RVP, Berbatov, Fletcher

In this case, the downside of having RVP + big 3 is
                  1. Rotate 3 4m DEFs
                  2. One vale MF (Michu) pls bench fodder (Guthrie, who needs to be replaced at some point)
                  3. 2 'value' strikers

There's still some slack in here - Hazard to Mata or Silva will free a little cash.

                    Interesting thanks.

I've got 3 big defenders at the moment and Pienaar instead of Michu...for my value MF.

Got RVP,Ba,Fletch so my team is somewhat similar but I'd have to manouevre about to get this kind of midfield. It's chief among my thoughts...whether to aim for this kind of team or to have more faith in the budget mids.

                    Cheers!

Did Balotelli play v Armenia? Tevez looking nailed on to start v WBA as the only City striker not to travel this week? Noticed RVP was the only united striker not playing Friday too. Although he will play in Romania worryingly.

Balo had some respiratory probs(flu), so he did not play. RVP will play for sure against ROM and he will suffer and sweat for 90 mins. (they lead the group at the same points and ROM are doing great during this WC qualifiers).

I'd rather have Jelavic over Suarez but that's personal preference combined with memories of Jelavic scoring several braces last year and being extremely consistent at scoring goals.

                Do it.

Suarez may be good for this week, but his goal scoring is way more inconsistent than Jelly's.
