After a hugely disappointing second half of the 2011/12 campaign, Fantasy managers were understandably wary over the merits of Jon Walters heading into the new season. The Stoke man surged out the blocks last term before falling dramatically as a Fantasy prospect, after finding the net in just one match – the Gameweek 38 home draw with Bolton – since the turn of the year.

The Potters’ opening fixtures made it easy to overlook the vast majority of their players, too. Games against Arsenal, City, Chelsea and Liverpool in their opening seven is set to be followed by a trip to Old Trafford next weekend – hardly the type of schedule to entice the savvy Fantasy manager.

Tony Pulis’ tactics also dimmed Walters’ appeal as an out of position prospect in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Classified as a midfielder yet typically fielded as Peter Crouch’s strike partner in a default 4-4-2, Walters has been shuffled out to the right wing on occasion as Stoke’s tricky run of opponents have resulted in a more defensive 4-5-1 formation at times.

While the Stoke defence have excelled thus far, with just five goals conceded, and Crouch has chipped in with four goals and an assist, Walters has remained somewhat under the radar – despite offering clear signs of his potential. To date, the Republic of Ireland international has played a part in four of his side’s six goals, with a converted spot-kick and a trio of assists helping him rack up 32 FPL points; this is the same tally as Gervinho and Nathan Dyer, for example, and just three points behind Marouane Fellaini, Kevin Nolan and Hatem Ben Arfa.

Once they get the United game out of the way, Stoke’s fixtures suggest their Fantasy assets will be afforded the platform to offer prosperous returns. As the difficulty level eases a touch, Pulis is expected to roll out a 4-4-2 once again – while they’ve lost just once in their opening seven Gameweeks, a single victory, at home to Swansea, underlines a definite requirement for greater emphasis on attack.

Priced at 6.4 in FPL, Walters’ midfield classification is far more enticing than in the Sky Sports game, where he’s listed as a 7.9 priced forward. Factor in his penalty duties and a run of games that see him welcome (SUN, QPR, FUL, NEW) to the Britannia from Gameweek 9-14, in addition to trips to Norwich and West Ham, and Walters looks a viable contender for our five-man midfields, with a mere 6% ownership only furthering his appeal as a strong differential to consider.

Possibly Suarez to fletcher and Jenks to Iva.or drop one of the midfield players to pienaar or someone in that range to free up the money if u want to keep Suarez. I have the same midfield including the sub. I wanted a stronger defense also, so I dropped RVP, but it was hard to let him go. Is a decision u have to make keeping him means there is going to be areas (defense) where u wish u could do better but send him away and sit and watch every game swallowing hard. Don't blame u for keeping him or Baines (I have him along with Rafa and Vert). I have Aguero instead of RVP, I am hoping he will score similar points and free up the extra money.

Alright, Mac. Yeah Gervinho looks much better now with Theo out. There's always the chance of Chamberlain starting on the right I suppose, but if he starts again tomorrow night - and Gervinho only had one game (the one that finished early!) G is favourite to start I think.

I suppose it's about whether Cazorla is a long term target for you. If so I think I'd treat them not so much as 'cover' or doubling up as just 2 different good picks for the week. Gervinho, long-term, is going to be rested a lot more than Cazorla because he has more competition. And if you're going to have a week or two where you overlap and have 2 ARS midfielders, then this next fortnight is probably the one to do it in!

unlike optimus, i think cazorla is overrated fpl-wise. plays a bit too deep for a 9.4 mid. Doesnt get much into the pen. area as you would expect.

tbh, even modric creates many chances. same goes for xavi . i knoew he plays further up than those two but he's 9.4 too

as for the attempts on goal, 90% of them are from outside the pen. area which normally don't trouble the keeper. looking at his goals and assists from previous seasons gives us a better indication

Good question. This really seems to divide opinion.

I've gone with Pienaar, ( so B) as he is looking brilliant, but am tempted to get one of the others in.

Walters is OOP and rotates brilliantly with Sterling over some great fixtures. However, a lot of people on here have said Nolan, hands down over Walters.

Tevez from city in my team. No one from Liverpool.

That's just it. He's looked plenty capable of scoring, and if he's ever going to, you'd expect at home to Reading is as good as any time.

            Cheeky punt on Sterling imo.

Yeah I have Cazorla...I fancy Nolan to score well over the next two weeks. Might be a little silly but with City conceding so many I fancy Morrison to score too.

It all depends on Giroud really, if he finds his feet, he'll be dynamite.

        I'll put it in a very FFS-friendly way. A or B?!?

        2 FTs

        A) Fellaini & Lambert > Nolan & Berbatov (leaves 1.1 in the bank)
        B) Fellaini & Lambert > Morrison & Giroud (leaves 0.0 in the bank)

I am gonna say B) 😉 - for the same reason I am going Giroud over Berbatov, and that's about confidence starting him week in week out at grounds around the country. I would have nagging worries with Fulham at away grounds of Top 10 teams - that they wouldn't get the service to Berbatov. You get what you pay for essentially and I think Giroud will get a good deal more chances per game over the long-term.

But Arsenal are proven to create lots of chances in every game - for Fulham to keep doing that is a similar gamble!

I've watched Giroud play most of his minutes so far this season and to be honest I don't think it's that big of a gamble. He's very good.

GW11 if you want to get him. Against the big games, SAF does prefer to stick Nani in the mix.

Ok planning for next week, will have two free's. Front eight is currently thus:

    Cazorla Mata Nolan Pienaar (Al-Ahmadi)
    RVP(c) Torres Tevez

    Options

    a. Tevez out, Silva in and play 3-5-2 for more City security
    b. Tevez out, Bale in for assured Spurs cover and ignore City going 3-5-2 (prob Pog as first sub in both)
    c. Do nothing!

The obvious would be sell Torres to get Bale but I can't bring myself to sell him anymore as have had in the team from GW1. Mata is such value it makes sense to double on assured starts to me?

    Thoughts?

Possibly. If I had to bet, I'd say they won't.

Most people who are getting rid probably got him in after his 3 big weeks and have got nothing out of him so they probably regret getting him. That's a lot of regret if he scores this week 🙂

What do you guys think is a better plan of action for this team

    Hazard / Cazorla / Fellaini / Nolan / Guthrie
    RVP / Ba / Fletcher

    A) Hazard, Fellaini & Fletcher > Bale, Silva & Berba (-4)
    B) Fellaini & Fletcher > Pienaar & Berba and then next week Hazard > Bale/Silva

...the only thing worrying me about option B is that I would probably want to be taking Pienaar out for their bad fixtures from gw14 anyway so is that a bad transfer?

also is A worth -4 if it means I get city and spurs coverage, total of 4 big hitters, there's an injury which without fixing I wouldn't have 4 mids to field?

which would you rather do? get in bale AND silva for -4 or just 1 of them next week for free? Berba is a must (even in the hit option because I'm 0.2 short without). Thanks guys

i think giroud's last show was really impressive
he did not only score, he held the ball and distributed it well
and walcott's goal was an inch perfect through ball by him (a fabregas type of pass)
now im happy with my front 3 but giroud's potential and low ownership puts him high on my watchlist

Who would you rather for a one week punt?

    Michu (WIG)
    Or
    Nolan (SOT)

My reason for not punting in Michu last week was fear over a huge price plummet, the fear is the same this week however the fixture is as good on paper as nolans.

If it was Michu it would have to be a 1 week punt, the price drop is inevitable and fixtures beyond are poor.

Getting a player for one week, no. Don't do it.

        Michu 45 pts Nolan 35.

How exactly has Nolan been better?

Expansion? They're planning on redeveloping it to reduce the capacity to cater for the crowds they'll get in the championship!

Got a front 8 consisting of:

Hazard (tot), Santi Cazorla (nor) Michu (WIG) Pienaar (qpr) Sterling (RDG)
Tevez (wba) RVP (STO) Fletcher (NEW)

Which two to drop from this lot?
Don't have the balls to drop Hazard or RVP even though I have my doubts about their returns this week.

My bad, playing 3 at the back so just looking to drop one. Thinking of dropping Fletcher, but derbies are very unpredictable.

Haz to Silva if you have balls / to Bale if you don't (more sensible)

Save the other transfer or Fletch to Berba if you really want to use it
