After a hugely disappointing second half of the 2011/12 campaign, Fantasy managers were understandably wary over the merits of Jon Walters heading into the new season. The Stoke man surged out the blocks last term before falling dramatically as a Fantasy prospect, after finding the net in just one match – the Gameweek 38 home draw with Bolton – since the turn of the year.

The Potters’ opening fixtures made it easy to overlook the vast majority of their players, too. Games against Arsenal, City, Chelsea and Liverpool in their opening seven is set to be followed by a trip to Old Trafford next weekend – hardly the type of schedule to entice the savvy Fantasy manager.

Tony Pulis’ tactics also dimmed Walters’ appeal as an out of position prospect in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Classified as a midfielder yet typically fielded as Peter Crouch’s strike partner in a default 4-4-2, Walters has been shuffled out to the right wing on occasion as Stoke’s tricky run of opponents have resulted in a more defensive 4-5-1 formation at times.

While the Stoke defence have excelled thus far, with just five goals conceded, and Crouch has chipped in with four goals and an assist, Walters has remained somewhat under the radar – despite offering clear signs of his potential. To date, the Republic of Ireland international has played a part in four of his side’s six goals, with a converted spot-kick and a trio of assists helping him rack up 32 FPL points; this is the same tally as Gervinho and Nathan Dyer, for example, and just three points behind Marouane Fellaini, Kevin Nolan and Hatem Ben Arfa.

Once they get the United game out of the way, Stoke’s fixtures suggest their Fantasy assets will be afforded the platform to offer prosperous returns. As the difficulty level eases a touch, Pulis is expected to roll out a 4-4-2 once again – while they’ve lost just once in their opening seven Gameweeks, a single victory, at home to Swansea, underlines a definite requirement for greater emphasis on attack.

Priced at 6.4 in FPL, Walters’ midfield classification is far more enticing than in the Sky Sports game, where he’s listed as a 7.9 priced forward. Factor in his penalty duties and a run of games that see him welcome (SUN, QPR, FUL, NEW) to the Britannia from Gameweek 9-14, in addition to trips to Norwich and West Ham, and Walters looks a viable contender for our five-man midfields, with a mere 6% ownership only furthering his appeal as a strong differential to consider.

Struggled between RVP and Nolan. Can't stick it on Caz as he doesn't seem explosive and loves to miss the target. Captaining someone against Stoke never seems appealing. If Nolan was 8-9 mil I think I'd stick it on him so why not.

In that case, don't let the price put you off (nor anyone on here telling you that it's a bad idea)

IMO, IF you see him scoring even one goal, you should consider it, since that will no doubt bring a few bonus... I'm sure you'd be delighted with 8/9pts...

True. Struggling to decide, but for the moment it stays on Nolan. Carroll is such a big factor in this decision.

That's true. He is huge 🙂

Nolan's a great shout. Well rested, him and Carroll both.

I think in terms of captaincy Cazorla gives you the threat of assists + maybe a goal. Whereas Nolan gives you the threat of a goal.

For that reason, I'd go Caz. But if he starts vs. France tomorrow that would probably make me change my mind again! Good week to have both players anyway so you're better off than most.

Have just been burned too many times with captaincy hunches. Prefer personally to gamble on the players in my team rather than captaincy. RVP is at home to Stoke and is a machine, Suarez had good fixtures so I stuck him in, but I don't have the same faith in him. If he scores, I'll still be happy though. If he doesn't and I'd captained him, rage at my stupidity.

Need to sort out my bench but feel the bad fixtures of Hazard, Michu and Rangel need sorting first? Thanks

You can tell that GW8 is on the horizon. It’s THIS weekend. I love the smell of a wildcard in the morning:

    Foster, Bego
Baines, Rafa, Wilson, Gorkss, 5.5m (possibly NEW until Sagna is back)
    Cazorla, HBA, Nolan, Puncheon, Sterling
    RvP, Aguero, Berba

no offense but shite team mate. You have absolutely no midfield, which is the cornerstone of any team. Nolan? Puncheon? Sterling? come on. Sorry to be harsh.

you shouldn't go with aguero and rvp. one or the other. downgrade aguero and improve your midfield.

    Best combo.

    1. Suarez (c) and Tevez

    2. Rvp (c) and Berb.

Presently leaning towards 1 as get to keep Tevez with great city fixtures and also Berbatov just back from injury so form may not be so great. Also think Suarez more likely to score heavily this gameweek than Rvp.

Ivanovic vs Baines, which one do you prefer?
    # Ivanovic ==> more potential for clean sheet, play more inside of penalty area has more potential for goal scorer, still has rotation risk with Cesar Azpi due to CL
    # Baines ==> all set pieces taker include penalty kick, play more outside has more potential for assist, no rotation risk

Anyone care to offer any advice what to do with my two free transfers? Fellaini out is probably the obvious one, but who for? Nolan, Gervinho, Pienaar, Duff all within range.

Then I was thinking I could ship either Tevez or Lambert for Berbatov, or do Tevez->Suarez or Jelavic.

I'm spoilt for choice, really... could even ship Hazard out for someone (even thought about a cheeky Gerrard punt)

Yeah Pienaar is an unexciting but probably sensible option. Don't really wanna chop and change too much... to complicate matters my H2H opponent has Nolan, but I promised myself I wouldn't let H2Hs mess with my choices too much.

Then again it all depends on what I do with my other transfer... could end up with another big hitter if I downgrade either Tevez or Hazard (got 1.5 in the kitty already)

Just about... not a bad shout there. Was all set on Berba, but realistically him and Jelavic are probably on a par. Brought Jela in for the game he got injured, shipped him out, he came back and scored a brace. I'm scared there's a hoodoo on him for me this season!

Both are good options, that said Berbatov is 1M cheaper.
So many choices for you, I'd say out of those you listed Fellaini > Lambert > Hazard/Tevez as far as priority transfers out are concerned, unless Fellaini is cleared to play.

          Hey Jonny.

Mid-term you'll want a City attacker with their fixtures I reckon, and Tevez is still the most nailed-on one going for now. I would leave him in there this week, do Lambert > Berbatov, save the other one and have 2 again next week and more of a clear picture of what to do with it.

I see, exercising restraint you say? An interesting concept. Problem is we probably won't hear anything from Moyes about Fellaini and with Guthrie out of favour I'm loathe to have an injured player in my team when I've got 2 free transfers.

In that case I might take the short term option of
              Lambert > Berbatov
              Fellaini > Nolan

Knowing that both *should* score really well this week - and you can think about who to change Nolan to in 2 weeks time when his fixtures get awful.

    RVP Aguero Fletcher

If i do Fellaini to a 5m mid this week,

Thanks for the response above mate. Your team is looking pretty sharp, but I'd rather keep the spot occupied by Fellaini as a mid-high midfielder rather than having 2 cheapies. That said your frontline is pretty expensive so if you can find a decent 5m to rotate with Puncheon you're looking pretty terrifying.

    Foster, Bego

    Rafael, Clark, Gallas, Davies, McCauley

    My guess so far is:

I realise that it was for a different team and in a different run of form for both him and Stoke, but has anyone brought up the fact that RVP came of the bench against Stoke last year with 25 minutes to play and scored twice?
I think he's still a great captain choice.

Really? It's Suarez/Liverpool after all. I prefer Cazorla, RVP and Nolan in my team.

All good options too but Suarez stats are nuts, he's playing a Reading team that look very leaky. I like Cazorla too but as the Southampton game showed you can score goals and not need him. RVP isn't firing on all cylinders right now. I like Nolan too but it's West Ham and they tend not to score that many (saying that neither do Liverpool)

I can see justifications for all 4 of them but I'd go Suarez as he will create for others like Cazorla and likely to be the closest to goal for his time like RVP.

Yeah true, I just held onto Suarez for so long last season, and even when he produced it was only ever 6 points because he shoots off target so damn much.

It's not the first time he's had a great fixture and potential, though. Rarely lives up to expectations, especially at Anfield - but it has to happen sometime.

I agree Pasq he is better when playing away. Also if he scores with so many shots of target he won't get BP and will sit on 6pt
