There’s nothing more satisfying for a Fantasy manager than anticipating a bandwagon before the masses make their move. While Demba Ba’s goals capture the headlines and Fantasy suitors, and Papiss Cisse looks shorn of the confidence that made him such a lethal acquisition in the latter part of last season, Hatem Ben Arfa has provided a steady source of points for his Fantasy owners thus far:

The Frenchman’s brilliant form towards the tail end of 2011/12 hinted at his potential. Having finally convinced Alan Pardew of his worth to the Newcastle first XI, Ben Arfa’s displays on the right of a 4-3-3 saw a surge in ownership, with expectations high going into the new campaign. While Pardew’s return to a 4-4-2 has clearly brought the best out of Ba, Ben Arfa’s contribution – particularly at home – cannot be overlooked.

So far, Ben Arfa has had a hand in three of the four goals Newcastle have scored in front of their own fans. More encouragingly, his returns have been produced over three of their four matches in front of the Toon Army – goals against Spurs and Villa was followed by a crucial assist in the 1-0 win over Norwich in Gameweek 5, highlighting his consistency, rather than one big performance followed by a few blanks. United may have nullified his threat last time round but so far Ben Arfa has produced 29 points over his four home games in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – with seven bonus points also accrued, that equates to an average of over seven points per home clash.

Away from St James’ Park, he’s been a disappointment. Trips to Chelsea and Everton perhaps understandably failed to produce any returns but a Gameweek 6 visit to Reading was a real let down for Ben Arfa’s owners, with Ba’s Madejski brace taking the plaudits instead. To a degree, this has allowed Ben Arfa to stay out of the limelight – 21,000 FPL managers shipped him out before the United game, while nearly 14,000 have ditched the Frenchman’s services prior to this weekend’s Tyne-Wear derby at the Stadium of Light. What better way to banish his away day blues, however, than to get one over Sunderland this coming Sunday afternoon?

After the Black Cats showdown, Newcastle look primed for investment. The subsequent seven Gameweeks afford Pardew’s men the perfect opportunity to rack up the points and with four potentially prosperous home games (WBA, WHM, SWA, WIG) in addition to a trip to Southampton, Ben Arfa – currently priced at 7.9 in FPL and a mere 6.2 in the Sky Sports game –looks well positioned to be a major Fantasy asset over the next few fixtures as the Magpies look to put the United defeat behind them.

All this kolarov talk is getting me going! Gonna save my transfer this week and if he doesn't go up before the deadline I can use my 2 free to bring in bale and kolarov for hazard and Hangeland. Should I?

    Current team

    Bego/Friedel
    Nelsen/McCartney/Gallas/Cuellar/Hangeland
    Sterling/Pienaar/Caz/Kags/hazard
    Torres/Suarez/Tevez

    Help much appreciated!

I think the possibility is there yeah. Rooney is sitting deep, may not be on pens any more and will be sharing free kicks. Caz would be my second pick, Gerrard is also a good shout, though to be honest you're spoilt for choice.

I'll be handing the armband to Giroud with berb as vc. I like a good punt.

Martin's Midfield is strong enough to do without this week, and play Sterling though. You could probably use some extra fire power. Go for it. But you may find him to be dead weight in a couple weeks time.

2FTs this week. One is gonna be Fellaini > Pienaar. The other could be

    A) Hazard > Bale
    B) Fletcher > Berbatov

Which ever one I don't go for this week I will probably do next, so which is the more important for this GW? B seems more popular on here but Fletcher is at home in a derby and should do well, whereas Berba is just coming back from injury so i'm not sure. Could use some input. Cheers

Ryan. Don't you think that kolarov is worth a punt for me, as he will be like my 5th defender. But I will start him every week in case he plays! I have set up my rotation so i have a solid team each week, even if he doesn't play. Not having RVP allows me to do this.

But i am very happy with the rest of my team. Don't feel the need to spend the 1.5m (over demel) anywhere else. And I prefer to put the money to use now and take a hit later if I need the cash to upgrade, rather than save the money in the bank for a rainy day.

Have considered Demel + Berbatov, over Kolarov + Lambert but I think i'll go for the flair pick, as demel would hardly play for me, and half of berba's fixtures suck.

I'm just saying that you would probably wish you needn't have to waste a transfer on downgrading Kolarov, which would actually only give you an extra 1.5m so wouldn't be enough to enable you to get a big hitter. His awkward price makes it hard to make a swift and easy change.

But I am playing a full rotaiton strategy. I will play Baines, Bale and Santi every game, and rotate the rest based on fixtures. If I'm right, this could be a great strategy. I'm fully willing to accept missing out on points hauls on my benched players.

I actually think Gorkss will deliver some surprising points this year...Reading will keep some CS eventually...Guthrie on the other hand is not worth it. I disagree with the Gorkss thing...he also has goals in him...happy to have him coming in as he's a guaranteed starter too.

surprising points yes, but probably not when you want or need them.

for example this week i'll probably have lambert hba and saylor coming off my bench. not sure about you but i t hink that's a lot better than any bench players you might have if you need them. and it makes it a lot easier dealing with blanks and injuries as i dont have to make transfers i can just bench them for a week or two

Each to their own but don't come crying when Lambert scores a hat trick.

The point is they won't be coming off your bench...they are on your bench unless something freakish happens...

Priding yourself over your bench is only going to end in tears...you can only play 11 mate.

That's the whole point. Using this strategy, in theory we should have a better starting 11 each week, than if you have most of your players playing every game regardless of fixtures, or playing crap players in good fixtures to fill in.

I like what your trying to do in theory. Most try to do that later on in the season when team values have increased alot. Trying it from the very start is interesting and might pay off big for you. I just don't think its the best way for me to approach the first half of the season with the players I want in my squad.

I have made the very concious decision to go without manchester forwards for the foreseable future, to avoid the rotation nightmare.

Once its clear that I literally don't WANT any of their players, and chelsea are coming into a horror run of fixtures so i'm stearing clear of them too, there is literally nobody that I really want, that I can't get using this strategy.

I'm not saying we are gonna have a repeat of last season where every big game was high scoring but players still score goals even with bad fixtures. I have gone without man u as I don't see a reasonable way into that strike force but it would be too risky imo to go without any cover from the 2 top scoring teams from last season. If RVP still cost 12 mil I might have still had him but at 13+ he just became a team breaker.

Hopefully I'll be able to afford him later in the season when I have better value.

All depends on security of starts. Man U have best set of fixtures, so:

      1. Rafael, looks solid until we know for sure his starts are at risk. Attacking threat puts him ahead of Evans.
      2. Evans, definite starter for time being.
      3. Sagna, will bump Evans as soon as he starts ahead of jenks.

      Rafael wins for me.

I know we gave up 2 goals there last season, but dont see us giving up much this weekend. In fact even though they are home, it wouldn't surprise me if they roll out a 4-5-1 with Odemwingie up front, or just go with Odemwingie and Lukaku from the start (since Odemwingie has the speed to cause trouble, and Lukaka has the size to help against Vinny and Joleon and cause problems from setpieces, and help defend them too). I could be completely wrong on numerous counts though.

Long really hasn't done much for me all season to be honest. Who would u drop to play him then??

No City is the obvious lack. But I dumped Tevez before his price started falling, not liking the chance of his being rotated, instantly regretted losing him, decided to get Silva, but now with Silva potentially out I'm resigned to having none for the time being. It may bite me on the arse.

        I like Giroud ((c)) too.

Maybe against the worst teams in the league. Not sure if Rooney is still on Pens but right now I'd rather have RVP over him as he plays so deep these days. You gotta figure Hernandez will get game time also so I don't see rooney playing as a striker for a while which means 11.7 mil is a redic price to pay.

He won't be the new Dempsey...I've watched Duff for years and he aint no Dempsey...his goals this year are really surprising but I have a feeling he may be taking up a more creative role in the side or at least playing more advanced because of Dempsey's departure...I'll give you that. I was tempted to punt on Duff instead of Nolan but history says Nolan is far more likely to score goals...Duff's form could just be a freak thing. But perhaps not and maybe I'll regret not getting Duff...as I can think of worse options given his fixtures.

TW, you have Kolarov starting over Lambert...but don't you realise that Kolarov is a defender who needs to keep a CS to get points first and foremost...expecting a goal from Kolarov every time he starts (which will be rarely) is futile...he needs a lot of luck to do so. You're paying 5.7 for a player who is not even close to being nailed on...who is a defender...and you're banking on him scoring every time he starts...which he wont. It's terrible value. Why would you play a defender away to WBA over a good Striker away to WHM? It's bound to end badly if Kolarov starts imo.

And another thing, your bench being strong is of course merely a sidenote to you owning a defender who won't play most games. If I owned Kolarov I'd certainly hope I had good back up...however I don't as I would prefer to own players that are likely to start every week if possible. What happens if Lambert gets injured Saturday morning and Kolarov is nowhere near the teamsheet? Not looking so strong then...

Having a nailed on striker and guaranteed starting midfielder/defender is a much safer option to take.

3-4-3 or 3-5-2 is the preferred formation so even my 4th defender doesn't even come into the equation. 1/2 points is par for the course, that's all they're needed for. If I get a 6 pointer when they're needed then that's a bonus. I can't conceive of a worse way to play the game than have a 5.7m defender who never plays in my team...it's so much wasted money. But I'm fully accepting the alternative strategy...I think you're getting too hung up on a Kolarov explosion every time he plays...

Did you even have him last week?

But the point is, if he doesn't play, and i end up with a 0pt, its not much different then having a Gorkks 1pt. But when he does play, he will likely get on average 6pts (what was last seasons ppg?)

It doesn't work like that though. Gorkss being a guaranteed starter is more likely to get 6 points than Kolarov is most weeks as he actually plays. Playing games = points. Kolarov = 0 points most weeks. You're buying a player to get you 0 points most weeks...and then score a monster score when he does..? This is a freakish improbability. He won't get you a 20 point haul every time he plays and will most likely get 1/2 if he concedes a SINGLE goal...that is terrible value.

But I will start Kolarov most games. Based on his ppg from last season, he should get on average 6pts (can't remember the exact) per game he plays. When he doesn't play, I have other stong players to come in. You could call wilson and sterling my other "bench" players, but I will be playing them in strong home fixtures anyway.

Kolarov is probably only in part-timers teams, since week 1 when they just picked a City defender and have never taken him out since they haven't/hardly checked since the start. He will probably just be one of those players that when you check your league rankings/points, and see someone way down below with 20more points than you, you see that they have Kolarov and he has done his monthly goal, assist and clean sheet plus bonus.

It ended up working last season as we lifted that bloody trophy, BUT I sometimes wish to christ Bobby would give us a consistent starting 11 from time to time.

Ha. I decided on no RVP weeks ago. To free me from the champions league rotaiton nightmare, and get a balanced squad, which I think might be the way forward for a hands on manager like myself. I have my rotaiton planned out up to GW20!! The ability to get Kolarov is just a by-product of that. Last weeks haul reminded me that he could be perfect as a joker in my strategy.

The pitfall of this is that all that extra money makes you tempted by Kolarov after a big points haul...however it is actually worse value than having an expensive team that is reliable. You end up messing about with gimmicky players that won't play.

That front line is damn scary, but, you do realise that 2 of those might not start/play this week, and the other one plays OOP negatively, and has to share fks and corners now, and is not even nailed on pens.

I dont like your strategy, but it really could pay off and you'll be the one smiling.

Not sure smart is the right word. I am on WC too & won't be getting most of those guys.

If thats the defence you front line allows you to have then I wouldn't stick with it.

I just figure Rooney and aguero at 5% ownership is the best chance I'll get all season to catch ground. Very sacred tho. As this is my WC it may make or break my season

In fact looking at your team again, sod it, ill be honest....no no no no no.

      Rooney out, berba in.
      Clark out, Rafael in
Saylor out Ivanovic/Vermaelen in. Should just about have the right money.

If not then just Rooney out, Berb in, and upgrade Taarabt to BenArfa

Sorry im not with it today. I see you already have berba. Not sure why I said that. I would get Gerrard out then, Suarez in for this week, and then Crouch or Ba ahead.

Or just get Ba in now!!! Ba Berba Aguero is something to savour going forward.......especially since Ba will bea round for January now too 🙂

Don't worry about difs yet. Differentials only really come into play in your mini leagues towards the end of the season, when you're trying to get a few point edge over your rival.

For now just get as many points as pos which may mean picking players that other people pick...

I know you want United cover going forward, I just don't think Rooney will necessarily score more than Ba or Jelly (or Giroud?) over the coming weeks. I could well be wrong, It could be inspired.

The Taarabt / Maloney rotation actually works well, but too many punts for my liking. Punting on Gerard at the expense of a defence is silly I reckon.

      Other than that. Good.

Ok you have talked some sense into me. If I want to punt on Rooney leave it till week 11.

        Bego, gazz

Rafael, baines, saylor - gorkks nelsen

Hazard, bale, santi, taarabt - Maloney

        Suarez, berbs, aguero

        Suarez > ba next week

Phew, that looks a little less crazy. Suarez instead of Gerard has to be a good Idea. Defence looks more defensive too.

How does it feel to conform?

            Just did haz > mata
            Rafael > kompany

But leaves me with no united cover... I should just log out of premier league site
