As Gameweek 8 drifts slips into memory, we digest the brilliance of a pre-season favourite, the options presented by Chelsea’s three musketeers and how United’s own attacking trio are causing consternation…

The Player

Juan Mata’s performance in the Gameweek opener at White Hart Lane sparked Roberto Di Matteo’s side and provided further evidence that the Spaniard deserves to find a place back in our Fantasy squads.

Widely fancied going into the new season, Mata seemed jaded by his Euro 2012 and Olympic exploits and drifted to three opening blanks while new arrival Eden Hazard sparkled. That led to the inevitable exodus that saw Mata’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price point slide to 8.8 by Gameweek 6 – at which point Chelsea’s playmaker had come to life.

Handed an extended rest over the international break in September, Mata has responded with five assists and three goals from Gameweek 5 onwards, overshadowing Hazard’s contribution and presenting a fresh and obvious route to Chelsea’s significant attacking threat.

Mata’s ownership and FPL price is now recovering, although at 9.0, he is still well below his initial valuation and offers clear value to new investors.

While Chelsea have a tough schedule ahead, a potential lack of clean sheets could well draw the sting from Di Matteo’s side and, in his current form, Mata looks best placed to orchestrate and inflict the damage at the other end.

The Team

The Mata-inspired White Hart Lane victory leads Chelsea into four home matches in the next six – on the face of it, an encouraging slate of fixtures. However, United, Liverpool and City are the next three at Stamford Bridge.

While that run seems likely to stretch Di Matteo’s side defensively, Chelsea’s attacking talent will need to come to the fore to maintain their run at the top of the table.

Eden Hazard currently commands over 40% ownership in the FPL and is also the most owned player in the Sky Sports game; his opening to the season providing all the evidence needed to lift the Belgian to near-essential status.

Intriguingly, Mata has now put a significant dent in that status and finally emerged as the player that generated the pre-season hype and heavy initial investment. While his ability to earn assists is undoubted, Mata is already half way to his goal tally of last season, indicating that, in Chelsea’s new system, he is proving more of a goal threat.

While Mata is in bloom, the insight into Chelsea’s system offered by the Spaniard indicates that he is perhaps unlikely to have a monopoly on goals amongst the three playmakers…

“The three behind the striker [Fernando Torres] always try to play with movement, swapping positions and trying to assist our striker… We have to work in training but we are players who play like this naturally as well. I don’t think it is a surprise. Oscar, Hazard, Fernando are top players. If you can win and also play really well, it is the perfect way.”

Di Matteo has constructed an offensive unit that is far from reliant on the goals of Fernando Torres and Fantasy managers appear to have four routes into this flourishing attacking unit. With Torres shedding owners at pace amidst stiff completion in our squads up front, it’s clear that the midfield trio are in favour.

The momentum is quite rightly with Mata and Hazard owners will either make the switch or hold firm and wait for the returns to swing back to their man. If both are out or reach, then Oscar provides another way in – available for 7.8 in FPL, the Brazilian has just a single assist to his name so far this season and, while that makes him a poor relation to the heavy-hitting duo, he will be a consideration for some.

Arguably, however, given the attacking intent shown by Chelsea’s full-backs, they provide a fifth avenue for investment. Branislav Ivanovic has the greater goal threat, the ownership and perhaps offers stronger security than Ashley Cole but, at 6.7, the left-back warrants attention for those willing to gamble on attacking returns over what Mata has declared, “the most important part of the season.”

The Talking Point

While Mata gave Hazard’s owners plenty to ponder, it seems that those holding Robin Van Persie will be forced to go on questioning the value of their prize asset. The Dutchman again returned in United’s 4-2 win over Stoke but he was overshadowed by Wayne Rooney for the second consecutive match.

Rooney’s brace and assist more than balanced out his unfortunate own goal and saw him come out of the Gameweek as the top scoring forward on show, ahead of the Dutchman.

At 1.7 cheaper in the FPL, the appeal is obvious and those who have point blank refused to shell out for Van Persie have themselves a clear contender to fill the void and cover United’s ample attacking potential.

There will still be a huge amount of faith shown in Van Persie, not least because he looks certain to lead the attack away from home while Rooney retreats to a deeper role in Sir Alex Ferguson’s new system. That didn’t prevent Rooney from returning at Newcastle, however, and from Van Persie’s comments post-match, it’s clear that there is much fluidity in United’s new three-pronged attack along with Danny Welbeck…

“Sometimes Wayne plays at the top, sometimes I do and then he drops in and then you have Danny coming in from the left sometimes too. I might also go out there for a few minutes in a game or Wazza does. I think it’s only the second or third time that we’ve played in this formation, but the main thing is we’ve had a good game and got three points.”

It remains to be seen if this movement materialises away from home and if Rooney can rival Van Persie in matches at Chelsea, Villa and Norwich coming up in the next four Gameweeks. With some debate still surrounding the issue of the designated penalty taker in the United ranks, there is clearly plenty of uncertainty as to whether Van Persie can outscore Rooney by a margin that would warrant the gulf in price.

One thing is for sure, Van Persie’s owners can at least sit and contemplate the option of the switch knowing that it’s a nice problem to have. From the evidence of this weekend, both Rooney and Van Persie look to be on their way to dominating the FPL forward rankings.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Saylor and Santon are both easily worth the 0.2m over simpson, who offers no attacking threat. both are great options for our nice run of fixtures. I presume that salyor will play over willo in the next game, but it isn't certain as willo had a decent game.

Re-Post - Hi Scouters: Quick poll

For a 4pt hit for A and B options, free for options C & D, would you rather:

    A) Suarez > Berbatov, Michu > Mata, Clyne > Wilson (have hughes/baines)

    OR

    B) Suarez > Berbatov, Yaya Toure > Mata, Michu> Valencia (have Tevez)

    OR

    C) Suarez > Berbatov, Michu > Bale

    D) Suarez > Berbatov , Yaya > Mata

    Cheers

      C.

Reasoning is because i currently have both Berbatov and Bale and i'm happy with it. Bale is hit and miss but Mata isn't going to be scoring braces everyweek - points will be shared between him and Hazard.

I dont understand it either, hes much better than Ba and has more chance of exploding in 60/70 mins than Ba in a single gamweek. Because Ba is 'nailed' on i think is the general reason. answer my post above 🙂

He hasn't had an explosive gw in a while, even though he seems to be one of the safest City players there is a certain level of underlying anxiety about rotation, other strikers are having great and 'explosive' gameweeks full of exciting stats which make them exciting propositions and people like a bit of a change.

Think that pretty much covers it.

Not sure away games dent their attack as much as their defence. Long's pace and Morrison's creativity are always likely to pick up points away against mid/bottom table teams.

i think Suarez will be one of the top 5 scorers overall this season

    Am I

    A) a dreamer with red tinted glasses or
    B) a realist

no seriously, i want to bring Ba in for him before he rises again...but i have a feeling suarez will punish me for that (surely that would be OK for me 😉 )

other transfer would be Fletcher --> Rooney (which i couldn't do without the first one) for a 4 pointer

Suarez is no different this year to last year. He won't punish you until he visits Carrow Road again. Also, I doubt any of the players likely to finish near the top have him. Ba is miles the better option.

Guess we'll see something of the forgotten man of football (Sinclair) soon, what with so many City midfield issues (Silva, Rodwell, Garcia, Milner) or is there a chance Aguero or Tevez could be dropped back with Dzeko brought in?

Basically is Tevez worth hanging onto? All depends if he plays this week I suppose.....

He's frighteningly consistent when it comes to fashioning chances/getting into position but then wasting them. If it had been happening for a month or so then you can understand the faith people show in him but it's been a season and a half - it can't just be bad luck!

If Tevez starts and let's say, plays 60, what would be his chances of starting on Saturday? I was thinking
Ridgewell, Tevez and Michu to Ba, Wilson and Mata over the next 2 GWs. But the prices might spoil it. This will give me 0.1 in the bank as it stands.

    COMBI-FLAIR KUDOS-DUO:

Which Combi-Flair Kudos Duo do you prefer for the mid-term-ish future. (If you don't have the fixtures to hand I can tell you that: B) has excellent fixtures, A) does not, and C) is half and half (but potentially so flair as to be combi-flair fixture-proof)

    A) Michu + Pienaar
    B) Nasri + Granero

You are putting too much emphasis on stats. A lot of your replies are focusing on good stats and all that. Mirallas last 4 is qpr, wig, SOT and swa. You would expect better performances in those than Ba who has had sun, MUN, rea, NOR.

Gallas was horrible in the last game, can see him benched. Mertesacker is also not a certain starter.

I like the look of Newcastle defense now that the injuries are starting to ease up, but Wilson looks good value at that price. Probably depends on your keepers. If you have Bego maybe Santont to cover the bases.

what happened to Ba in the 2nd half of last season??

does it mean when Cisse will be back on form, BA will be off form again? 😀

Depends if they play a 4-3-3 with Cisse leading the line and Ba on the left.

I wish. I just had a look in the Maghull-based league he's in and there's another lad I know in there who still has Ross Barkley in his team, despite the fact that he's on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. True Everton faith there.

Just my views on the action taken on the moron that is Aron Crawley. He admitted drinking from 10am, several cans of lager, quarter of a litre of vodka and ten pts of cider, says he can't remember what happened. Alcohol is banned within stadiums, yet in that state you are permitted in, get a grip. The view from Leeds that one individual has given the rest of the fans unfairly a bad name, is pathetic. He was not the only moron on the pitch during the incident, and when he returned to the terraces, was received by all those near him, as if he had just saved a life. The normal response to such behavior would have been to hand him over to the police, not assist in his escape route from the ground. His 4 month sentence will among st his thousands of moron friends will now crown him as a cult hero, in the eyes of the scumbag world in which he exists. Should be made do community service at Sheffield Wednesday, wearing, an I'm a waste of space shirt.

Bit excessive possibly. Obviously he should be banned from football grounds for life (or a reasonable amount of time) and probably do community service but to get all 'high and mighty' because of people acting like idiots is a bit pointless. Just gets you all riled up for nothing.

That does seem like a difficult situation then, the trouble with fans when they take their support to strange extremes. Still there does seem like little can be done to stop him acting in a destructive way, especially when he's cheered on by his peers, so there's little point in getting all excited that such an individual exists.

I reckon that instead of transferring a player out due to one week suspension or rotation post champions league we should all give our bench a chance. Regularly leave big points there, would be nice if they were auto-subbed in instead!
