As Gameweek 8 drifts slips into memory, we digest the brilliance of a pre-season favourite, the options presented by Chelsea’s three musketeers and how United’s own attacking trio are causing consternation…

The Player

Juan Mata’s performance in the Gameweek opener at White Hart Lane sparked Roberto Di Matteo’s side and provided further evidence that the Spaniard deserves to find a place back in our Fantasy squads.

Widely fancied going into the new season, Mata seemed jaded by his Euro 2012 and Olympic exploits and drifted to three opening blanks while new arrival Eden Hazard sparkled. That led to the inevitable exodus that saw Mata’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price point slide to 8.8 by Gameweek 6 – at which point Chelsea’s playmaker had come to life.

Handed an extended rest over the international break in September, Mata has responded with five assists and three goals from Gameweek 5 onwards, overshadowing Hazard’s contribution and presenting a fresh and obvious route to Chelsea’s significant attacking threat.

Mata’s ownership and FPL price is now recovering, although at 9.0, he is still well below his initial valuation and offers clear value to new investors.

While Chelsea have a tough schedule ahead, a potential lack of clean sheets could well draw the sting from Di Matteo’s side and, in his current form, Mata looks best placed to orchestrate and inflict the damage at the other end.

The Team

The Mata-inspired White Hart Lane victory leads Chelsea into four home matches in the next six – on the face of it, an encouraging slate of fixtures. However, United, Liverpool and City are the next three at Stamford Bridge.

While that run seems likely to stretch Di Matteo’s side defensively, Chelsea’s attacking talent will need to come to the fore to maintain their run at the top of the table.

Eden Hazard currently commands over 40% ownership in the FPL and is also the most owned player in the Sky Sports game; his opening to the season providing all the evidence needed to lift the Belgian to near-essential status.

Intriguingly, Mata has now put a significant dent in that status and finally emerged as the player that generated the pre-season hype and heavy initial investment. While his ability to earn assists is undoubted, Mata is already half way to his goal tally of last season, indicating that, in Chelsea’s new system, he is proving more of a goal threat.

While Mata is in bloom, the insight into Chelsea’s system offered by the Spaniard indicates that he is perhaps unlikely to have a monopoly on goals amongst the three playmakers…

“The three behind the striker [Fernando Torres] always try to play with movement, swapping positions and trying to assist our striker… We have to work in training but we are players who play like this naturally as well. I don’t think it is a surprise. Oscar, Hazard, Fernando are top players. If you can win and also play really well, it is the perfect way.”

Di Matteo has constructed an offensive unit that is far from reliant on the goals of Fernando Torres and Fantasy managers appear to have four routes into this flourishing attacking unit. With Torres shedding owners at pace amidst stiff completion in our squads up front, it’s clear that the midfield trio are in favour.

The momentum is quite rightly with Mata and Hazard owners will either make the switch or hold firm and wait for the returns to swing back to their man. If both are out or reach, then Oscar provides another way in – available for 7.8 in FPL, the Brazilian has just a single assist to his name so far this season and, while that makes him a poor relation to the heavy-hitting duo, he will be a consideration for some.

Arguably, however, given the attacking intent shown by Chelsea’s full-backs, they provide a fifth avenue for investment. Branislav Ivanovic has the greater goal threat, the ownership and perhaps offers stronger security than Ashley Cole but, at 6.7, the left-back warrants attention for those willing to gamble on attacking returns over what Mata has declared, “the most important part of the season.”

The Talking Point

While Mata gave Hazard’s owners plenty to ponder, it seems that those holding Robin Van Persie will be forced to go on questioning the value of their prize asset. The Dutchman again returned in United’s 4-2 win over Stoke but he was overshadowed by Wayne Rooney for the second consecutive match.

Rooney’s brace and assist more than balanced out his unfortunate own goal and saw him come out of the Gameweek as the top scoring forward on show, ahead of the Dutchman.

At 1.7 cheaper in the FPL, the appeal is obvious and those who have point blank refused to shell out for Van Persie have themselves a clear contender to fill the void and cover United’s ample attacking potential.

There will still be a huge amount of faith shown in Van Persie, not least because he looks certain to lead the attack away from home while Rooney retreats to a deeper role in Sir Alex Ferguson’s new system. That didn’t prevent Rooney from returning at Newcastle, however, and from Van Persie’s comments post-match, it’s clear that there is much fluidity in United’s new three-pronged attack along with Danny Welbeck…

“Sometimes Wayne plays at the top, sometimes I do and then he drops in and then you have Danny coming in from the left sometimes too. I might also go out there for a few minutes in a game or Wazza does. I think it’s only the second or third time that we’ve played in this formation, but the main thing is we’ve had a good game and got three points.”

It remains to be seen if this movement materialises away from home and if Rooney can rival Van Persie in matches at Chelsea, Villa and Norwich coming up in the next four Gameweeks. With some debate still surrounding the issue of the designated penalty taker in the United ranks, there is clearly plenty of uncertainty as to whether Van Persie can outscore Rooney by a margin that would warrant the gulf in price.

One thing is for sure, Van Persie’s owners can at least sit and contemplate the option of the switch knowing that it’s a nice problem to have. From the evidence of this weekend, both Rooney and Van Persie look to be on their way to dominating the FPL forward rankings.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    RVP (c) this week.

    - Big game player
    - Up against Cahill and Luiz, the two clumsiest defenders in the league.
    - Scored 3 at the Bridge last year.
    - No better option unless you have Aguero(and if he even starts)
    - Great partnership with Rooney already materializing...

i am getting fed up with 45-55 score every week, so thinking going radical management for a few weeks and trying to get as close as possible to best team for that week even if it means 3 or 4 transfers, obviously could easily backfire.

I will leave certain players in every week as they can pay off any time and to avoid losing big bucks.
Will also keep same keepers as it is never worth it to transfer them.
    so fixed players are
    jassk mignolet
    baines
    caz mata
    RVP

as i see it arsenal, man city, newcastle and spurs are big teams to follow this week in no particular order.

    what i am thinking is
    jaask
    baines, gallas, simpson (-4)
    mata, caz, HBA, bale/lennon (-4)
    RVP, defoe/ dzeko(-4), berb

    any thoughts?

most weeks it would be 2-3, aim is to get guys who will pay it back plus some over 3-4 week period.
I don't see hits as big problem if you hit the right move, (accept this is key part)

I tend to look at like, if i had that team and was 8 points less in my overall score would i be happy

I'll be honest, I have considered this. But obviously you have to call the hits REALLY well. Contrary to what some people think, I think you can profit from this as the payoff is potentially massive. You have to set a high bar for what you're willing to do for a hit though. Something like Lambert > Berba this week if the kind of hit I'm considering.

thats my logic as well, i am thinking if you are willing to take one hit to get points then why not 3. the worst that can happen is -12 points, but you have got 3 players you think will score well, so really just need one to pay off to get points back

Michu to Ben Arfa is doable for me at the moment for free...but looking at his stats Ben Arfa looks pretty lightweight FPL point wise. Quite good at home, but not great...pretty poor away.

Massive HBA admirer in real life but I don't think he has the numbers to approach the top of his price bracket for points. Sold him a few weeks ago and not regretting it so far.

More specifically, Newcastle as a whole aren't passing well so he isn't getting the chance to terrify defences so much. He's also not playing OOP quite so much or often, quite possibly because Newcastle are playing more cautiously with all their injuries.

Since they went back to a 4-4-2 he seems to be less influential, he gets a lot of the ball but not in threatening areas. If you take away his penalty in GW1 he has only 1 goal in 8 games which isn't great for an 8.0 player. I think I would prefer Ba for Newcastle's nice run.

I personally consider him one of the most over-performed strikers so far. Did a bit of historical research on him. Just something to consider.

Peter Crouch- I looked at the entire PL career for Crouch to get a better idea of his normal conversion rate, mostly because last seasons was offensively very poor for Stoke, so his stats were probably worse than normal for last year.

            GW1-6: Shots taken:13 Goals scored:4
Normal rate of shot conversion: 2.08 shots per game, 8.9 shots per goal

If you look at this and consider he has spent half of his career playing for teams like Liverpool and Tottenham. I cant see him improving on this much. And with his shots per games number really low, I can't see him scoring over 10-12 goals this season.

Interesting. For Stoke's good run of fixtures you would back him to do well though. I actually think he's an underrated player.

I think as a real time player yes, but for fantasy I cant see myself buying a forward who takes 2 shots a game and plays for Stoke 🙂

If QPR, which is the crucial part perform at home as they did yesterday, then he will have a real chance for returns. Even though they lost 3,2 in the cup to Reading, did put 2 past them, and not with yesterdays line up, which I think is very close to there best starting 11.

Mata to rise again tonight. That's disappointing. Means i'm going to have to do my trades now as I have zilch in the sky rocket...(wont be able to afford tomorrow)

    Begovic - (Foster)
    Baines - Gibbs - Demel - (Cuellar) - (Davies)

Yep I'm effectively saying I'm willing to swap some 0.1s and 0.2s for greatly reducing the risk of injuries. With prices not as tight this year, this is more doable. And obviously if you do accidentally get in someone who gets injured, his price will drop and undo your profit...

I've been strong all season so far - made very few early transfers. Hence my TV is decent but not spectacular.

Chelsea are playing away to Shakhtar - that sounds like a game they will take seriously so unfortunately yes Mata will surely play. That said, I'm sure if you looked at the risk for any particular game of getting injured it would be something like 5%.

In the absence of any definite transfers I'm seriously considering doing the RVP to Rooney move to free up a bit and upgrade Michu to Mata or another big gun.

RVP and Rooney are inseparable according to this table I did recently.

Check out the last four weeks...they feed each other rather well.

Its also based on watching the games, well the highlights on MOTD and Fergies comments about a fluid front three.....they just seem to move well together, with Welbeck as well. Also in the diamond formation it worked at Newcastle. I just think that extra 1.7 means I can have Mata - Caz - Bale - Tevez and Rooney.

AW said Gibbs unlikely to make Schalke. I'm not sure how that places him for Saturday. Probably wait and see if he 'nearly' makes the midweek squad.

What do we think of Defoe for a short term punt?

    sou, WIG.

And then a switch to Ba for his juicy fixtures

People have mentioned about risers and all that. Get them before they rise is probably the best strategy but last year I did that and it didnt do so successful. This year I have saved a transfer every other week and used 2 the weeks I have transferred. I am nearly in top 100k with wildcard in tact so hope to finish top 20k.

Good luck to you. I don't have the patience to save transfers that often, and most weeks my transfer pays off, so kind of working for me. Unfortunately there is no way I can save a transfer this week.

Crouch Potato - thoughts on Granero as an FPL prospect? I really, really like him as a player - just need a little convincing of his prospects as an FPL player. Freekicks and corners obviously help. Being the best player in the side helps too. Also think fixtures look great, and Zamora knocks downs / lay-offs could see a few more chances falling his way at edge of D.

    Whaddaya reckon?

Hate pointing people towards or away from players, was excellent yesterday. However if you take away his set piece duties, then would say definite no. Part of his duties in midfield in yesterdays line up was to protect the back 4. Hoillet and Taarabt are the stand out options for me.

Thanks. I'm going to take the Arsenal game to have another look. He was playing a sort of Guardiola / modern Arteta type role - but at the same time, in the general cut and thrust of QPR and the Premiership, I can see him getting forward. Sliding in on Howard was particularly encouraging - and I've been nosing through his stats for a while. I also think he's more likely to keep his place than those other two.

PS. fully agree with your post on that Leeds fan by the way. 'Always one' couldn't be further from the truth. Dreadful excuse. They also sand "Jimmy Saville, he sh*gs who he wants"

        !!!
