Another midweek of UEFA Champions League action is only a few hours away and, as usual, we have our usual run through of all the salient points leading up to first kick-off this evening…

SCOUT LEAGUE

There are still issues to be had with the game this term. The Champions League format underwent a change between seasons and the new platform that has been bestowed upon us has most definitely encountered some kinks. Aesthetically there are plus points but ergonomically we have come across problems.

After the first two Matchdays of action, however, we can be happy to say that there have been improvements in the league display which hopefully bodes well for further updates in future rounds. We can now actually view other teams which, as simple as that seems, is a major plus point.

We can now give European Fantasy managers in the Scout League their proper dues and praise Shindokung for jumping to the top of our league (and 16th overall) off the back of an incredibly strong 88 points in the previous Matchday. The expensive but rewarding strike-force of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robin Van Persie brought home plenty of bacon with 42 points between them. He even got a goal out of BATE Borisov – a charmed life.

After a couple of rounds there is a moderate split back to Wazza in second place at the hands of a strikeforce very much empowered by the best La Liga has to offer. That’s what 26.0m of your budget buys you – the best in the world. Dennil345 is a mere single place back in third with exactly the same pair of forwards doing the heavy lifting and a nice varied defence helping boost the tallies for Matchday Two.

Four other managers have been able to reach at least 150 points after two rounds of the competition with mafesan and sam777 beating it by a point with jjeva186 (our leader following Matchday One and the only of our top seven to do so without Cristiano Ronaldo lending a hand) and Chris Thompson falling right on the mark.

The Scout Team’s own, Anorak, has managed to hold firm in the upper echelons by staying exactly where he was with a berth at 32nd in the Scout League.

MARKET FORCES

With the men between the sticks, it seems that transfers being made have got one eye on saving a penny or two along the way. Manuel Neuer and Iker Casillas are first and third for transfers out respectively since the end of Matchday 2, while the markedly cheaper Helton and Wilfredo Caballero of Malaga are the leading candidates in the replacement department.

Those not looking to scrimp on goalkeepers seem to be favouring Joe Hart with two ties against Ajax up next on the calendar for City.

Marcelo has gone and broken his foot so there’s no surprise he tops the defenders on their way out with Gerard Pique not too far behind and John Terry also attracting negative equity. The FA sanctioned ban on the latter doesn’t extend to the Champions League so European Fantasy managers are either misinformed or have simply had enough with the Chelsea captain.

In tandem to that transfer we find David Luiz rocketing up the charts following his goalscoring exploits in Denmark last time round, with Thiago Silva of PSG attracting similar levels of interest. FC Porto defender Alex Sandro is the real hot property this week though with managers coming in their droves to snap him up.

Malaga have had a bright start to their Champions League careers and, to go alongside their goalkeeper, a pair of their midfielders, Isco and Eliseu, are garnering a great deal of interest as a result. Chelsea’s Oscar is drawing just as much attention which is no doubt aided by the fact he was severely underpriced at a mere 6.5 (2.5 grades cheaper than Eden Hazard, for example) in this format.

Those on budget are also shopping in the midfield ballpark as Cluj playmaker Rafael Bastos and Edgar Oleknovich of BATE have seen more than a handful of transfers in since last week.

Those midfielders dropping out are invariably coming from one of two places: Bayern Munich (Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben in particular) or the Premier League (Eden Hazard, Santi Cazorla, Nani and Antonio Valencia all seeing marked declines in interest).

European Fantasy managers may have been scrimping and saving in the previously mentioned because 13.0 heavyweight Cristiano Ronaldo is the most sought after striker this week. Robin Van Persie and Gervinho are the (much varied) alternative striking options of the week.

Interest in Bayern Munich’s pair of Marios continue to stumble up front, with the injured Gomez unsurprisingly losing investment hand over fist, while his current deputy Mandzukic also plummets after defeat to their Belarusian rivals BATE Borisov last time round. Carlos Tevez has also seen a good deal abandon ship, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic right at the front of the queue as his 12.0 stake seems to be an easy transition for those wanting Ronaldo.

ONES TO WATCH

Younes Belhanda – with just a point picked up from their first two fixtures, Montpellier will really be looking at tomorrow’s fixture at home to Olympiacos as a must-win if they want to continue in their Champions League adventure beyond the group stages. If anyone is going to invigorate the reigning French champions out of their slumber the odds will be in favour of their number 10 lynchpin Belhanda.

Jackson Martinez – with expensive options often taking up a couple of berths in European Fantasy managers’ strike-force, the need for a good value third option is often called for. Ahead of a home fixture with Dynamo Kiev Martinez is a forward who fits that mould rather nicely – he comes in at just 6.5 and plays for a side buoyed by their recent victory at home to Paris Saint Germain in the previous round.

Nicolas Lombaerts – FC Zenit have been experiencing a tumultuous beginning to a Champions League campaign that was hoped would be the start of something special. With a home tie against RSC Anderlecht coming up, Luciano Spalleti will be hoping that the tides of change will arrive if a little later than anticipated. Any success must be built on the bedrock of a solid defence so Lombaerts, just 4.5 in this format, is a nice cheap option in what should be the Russian champions’ game to win.

Lionel Messi – this pretty much goes without saying but, for the approximately quarter of European Fantasy Managers who haven’t yet welcomed Messi into their teams, we figured we’d reiterate the fact. Barcelona have the world’s best player leading their charge and a home game against Celtic tonight – it’s an equation with a very simple solution.

Please note that deadline for your UEFA Fantasy Champions League team selection will be at the earlier time of 17:45 CET today. This is due to Benfica’s trip to Spartak Moscow kicking off earlier than the seven remaining scheduled fixtures today.

    Hi peeps,

I strongly feel I need to get Bale into my team this week, which basically means I'll have to take my first hit this season.

Currently my team looks like this:

    Begovic/Foster

    Vermaelen/Baines/G Johnson/Clark/Nelsen

    Cazorla/Michu/Ben Arfa/Walters/Pienaar

    Aguero/Fletcher/Berbatov

On paper I think it looks decent enough, but I've had some rotten luck the past 4 weeks and I feel I need to make changes again.

I've decided to get rid of Pienaar (his red card made it easier) and like I said get Bale in.

However, I need to fund the move by getting 1,8M in somehow.

My options currently include the following:

    A) Fletcher => Di Santo
    B) Michu => Sterling
    C) Ben Arfa => Snodgrass
    D) G Johnson => Wilson
    E) Vermaelen => Shawcross

What do you reckon? Any other options I should consider?

Saw this tactic mentioned the other day and was curious as to what others thought about it. How about going with Begovic and a 4m keeper as both gks until the jan wildcard? Stokes fixtures are good enough to play him pretty much every week, and would mean saving over 1m on downgrading Foster (having looked at the ticker I'd only play him once in the next 6 anyway.

    Thoughts?

If I was wildcarding today I'd do that. I've been running on Jussi alone with Fed injured/crying/dropped all season and it's weirdly liberating not to have that choice. I have a history of playing the wrong keeper anyway. Take the GK question out of the equation - or shoot the hostage as Jack Traven would say...

Seems a valid tactic. I had Bego and Juusi from GW4 with the intention of playing Juusi more in the short-term and Begovic more from this GW. Looks to be working out so far.

Only issue is whether Sorensen gets game-time in the league. It will happen sooner or later so just make sure your backup keeper plays.

What are people doing with Michu?

I got him in in GW4 on my WC... I think I was influenced by all the hype!

Then he suddenly looked an average FPL prospect.

Now he's playing up front (for how long we're not sure).

I was set to dump him for next week. I bought him early at 6.5 which is swaying my decision to keep. He will rise this week. What price did you buy him at?

If you bought him at 7.0 i would be more temped to sell.

I was late to the party and bought him at 7.2 thinking he'd continue to rise and at least I'd make some money. Turns out he fell again so I'm back where I started. I've no idea why I went for him but he's in my squad now so I guess I just need to make a rational decision!

He's got one favourable fixture in the next four and has averaged one shot on target a game in the last 4. His move up front could improve that but I'm not sure.

I guess I need to decide who to target. Nolan is someone who's been on my watchlist since pre-season so maybe this week is as good as any to bring him in. Wigan away and Stoke home are the only favourable games in the next 4 and gameweek 13-19 doesn't look that exciting either.

Already have Bale. Don't really have the funds to upgrade him without taking a hit. I might sell Tevez (probably for Ba) soon and free up some funds but I'm in no rush at the moment.

Don't have Michu so can't comment really.

Regards your reply to my Dzeko comment on the last page.

The reasons I would consider Dzeko as a short term buy:

      A) He is on great form...scoring winners in 2 of his last appearances.
      B) He is due more minutes/starts on the back of his form and if he is the player scoring then he is the player to play.
      C) At 7.5m and for 3/4 games he could turn out more productive points-wise than any other striker in that bracket. If you were to own him for a period where he scored 4 goals in 4 games overall for instance...regardless of his playing time...then that represents major value...not to mention he would have outperformed most Mid-priced strikers.

He plays for arguably the most free-scoring team in the premier league and at 7.5m I don't see why he isn't a calculated risk for a short term punt.

I have had him from the beginning. Went through a stage of thinking I'd keep him all-season, but slowly becoming less attached. Forced into playing him at City this week where he is unlikely to get anything. That could be curtains for him with so many of my other targets being in midfield and with better fixtures. Maybe get him back later when the fixtures die down.

On the other hand, if he scores at the Etihad - he'll have changed my mind!

This is why I'm also glad of another weeks grace - so I can scout a bit more. The guys I want have various marks against them: Ramirez - injured! Oscar - fixtures (and Mata) Lallana - headlines soon to be stolen by Ramirez, Granero - still not 100% sold on FPL worth...

Ideally I'd push him up for a few weeks punt on Nasri but I can't afford it.

          How about yourself?

I'm not really targeting any of those players to be honest. They all have question marks like you say.

i don't buy into michu's new OOP status personally, he started the season as a striker, and now he's been the centre forward for one match. he'll be pretty much OOP all season regardless of whether graham plays or not.

I generally don't like having more than one big hitter as they're bad value. It's good to have one for a solid captaincy safety net but having two means you strip points off the rest of the team.

    Baines, Figueroa, Zabaleta

    Michu, Nolan, Cazorla(VC), Bale

    Ba(C), Suarez, Podolski

    Foster, Pienaar, Cuellar, Gunter

1 free, 0.4 in the bank.

I'm thinking Pod has to go, fixture or not. Any suggestions on transfer(s)?

Berbatov is looking the most attractive, free's up some funds. Planning on getting rid of Michu and Nolan come GW10 for Maloney and one of Mata/Silva. Sound good?

Alternative would be Berbs for Pod and Aguero for Suarez for a hit. But Suarez has Everton next, is nailed on and scored against them last year. Seems like it could backfire.

I can't see myself holding onto him long term anymore. Have officially lost the faith. The fixture is tempting though.

I could do Suarez to Aguero and Michu to Maloney this week for a hit, but taking two relitvely in form players out for a rotation risk and a budget mid who will have to play this week, while Pod stays seems a little..roundabout as well!

He'll be up there with the shortest odds-on AGS surely? I wouldn't make that transfer, esp. with Aguero's involvement up in the air. After this week then definitely - but before a home game with the bottom team - looks a bit of a scary one.

But Podolski isn't really doing anything as a striker (he's out and out on the wings), and I am pretty sure the stats would back me up.

    @Martin Unreal

Your Dzeko punt could be genius. One thing I have noticed about Dzeko that remains true this season. He is very much a streaky player who relies heavily on confidence. He has been scoring goals coming of the bench a lot recently, but it has been when City have been chasing a game and so pressing hard. If they are cruising he can be ineffective. Listening to his comments after the WBA game he appears to be very downbeat and feels he's done enough to earn a start. If he doesn't start tomorrow there's a very good chance he will v Swansea and given his form he could do well. As long as it's a short term transfer it could pay off as his confidence will be sky high and this bodes well

As it is midfield is where my need is greatest, so with Silva likely injured and Milner suspended, Nasri is where I am focusing my efforts

Dzeko is a huge risk as i have stated above, plus form is no guarantee of anything, even with Mancini. Dzeko appears to be fourth choice with Mancini's boy Mario ahead of him in the pecking order. If you feel you have decent back-up, or could deal with a possible 1 point cameo or are convinced he will start then go for it.

If you want to stay safe then go with Ba.

Thanks for your thoughts on it all JK...I think it would be silly to dismiss his potential value as a short term punt. We all know he can produce some devastating returns when he is on form.

I can see the pitfalls and the level of risk involved. But my argument for his value is based on my thinking that over 4 games for instance...he could be the top scoring forward under 8m in FPL purely because he plays for a top team and his opportunities for goals are heightened by the service he is getting. Add to this the fact that City's run is rather favourable and it could be worth it over say Fletcher who may consistently tick along this season but not match Dzeko's explosiveness and potential for high scores in short term periods.

      Hope that made sense.

I see what you are saying. As AB points out, he was benched after a 4 goal haul (I remember this well as I bought him after that haul), so there's a massive risk there. But his explosivity is there for all to see. For under 8 million options are really limited to Berba, Fletcher, Crouch or Defoe (or a short term punt on Holt) but, aside from Berba, none offer the explosive potential of Dzeko

I would not fault your cynicism. However this punt would be more in anticipation of a Dzeko explosion rather than last year when everyone bought him after it. I acknowledge it's a major gamble.

I think HBA and/or Ba is enough to take advantage of Newcastle's fixtures. Having said that, the return of Krul, Simpson, Saylor plus the way Coloccini plays they could get back to the CS of last season.

Could actually be a good move. As much as I like Rafael's attacking potential the way United play is all about attack and they do look like conceding most games.

I'd go with B as I don't think there are any nailed on 4m keepers and now is probably a good time to loose Rafa with their fixtures. Its a few weeks too early for me though as I want to do Rafa>Sagna

Sane keeper combo as me then and I was considering doing the same a few weeks ago when McCarthy seemed nailed on for a few more gw's. I am not aware of any other 4m keepers and I read somewhere that Federici is on the way back. Moreover there is always the risk of Sorenson, so I decided against it. Begovic does look good up to gw18 though so I can see the appeal.

      Neither
Keep Jussi for his home games and the fact that he rotates perfectly with Begovic
and keep Rafael for the season, Utd will sort out their defence and he is an attacking threat.
Your priorities should be replacing Gibbs,Clyne and Toure I reckon.
Gibbs and Toure overpriced. Clyne is never likely to keep a clean sheet. .5 more for Wilson at Stoke is the way to go.

Good point mate. I had only looked at Home Away rotation but your right, Begs is defo fav in 13/15 of those games.
For 4.0m theres only McCarthy at Reading who actually starts. Or you could hedge your bets by having Sorensen in case Begs is rested/injured.
Otherwise Foster is probably the best bet for some degree of rotation.
I also have Jussi/Begovic so cheers for pointing this out!

anyone else addicted to havin 2 FT's? have had 2 for 3 weeks now(only used one every week) and cant bring myself to use both now even though i can.. for eg.. i can do Rafael to Wilson and Dyer to Mata.. but i'm thinkin of just settlin for Dyer to Barfa and saving it again

I LOVE saving up two and then spending 2 or 3 transfers at once. I think it's so much more powerful. It also prevents knee jerks as everything changes after the next gameweek.

if you don't have Ba, Barfa could be a great shout. As it is, with my lack of City coverage, and a need to make some changes in midfield, i am focusing my energy on Nasri. With Milner definitely out, and Silva likely to be out at the w/e, Nasri is likely to be City's main man in midfield. It's likely to be a 2 to 3 week punt then I will sell for Barfa.

Then I wouldn't worry about Barfa, not sure Newcaslte are worth doubling on attack for. Keep Mata in your plans, but if you can avoid losing Rafa I would. United defence is going to improve at some point, and Rafa will still get attacking returns.

You could try a cheeky punt on Oscar. or go with Walters *groans* or double on Tottenham with Lennon.

this is why I'm glad I didn't jump on board Pienaar early on. It means i can have the reliable Mr. Jelavic instead and look for options in midfield. Hence why my thoughts are focused this week on Ramirez and Johnson to Lennon and Nasri (-4)

I plan/need to take a hit this GW, but next week I plan in saving it (as in unless someone gets injured I feel I will be well set-up) After that i hope to have 2 FTs continually up until Jan WC where I can take 2 1 week punts the week before I activate it.

Having just about recovered from the train wreck of gw8 I took the bould option of swapping Yaya out for Mata last night (before the price rise). Pienaar's red is forcing my hand to play Puncheon this gw so should I just go with it and take the risk that Puncheon will play, or do I take a hit to replace? (got 0.7 in the bank). Quite liking the look of Saints fixtures after Spurs so am reluctant to get rid if Puncheon is likely to start.

steve bould is sure puncheon above his weight. as arsenal's defensive coach i hardly expected his remit to include giving you transfer tips. but on a more serious, non-punny(also non-funny) note, i have no idea what you oughta do. if someone who actually knows something tells you that puncheon has a 60%+ chance of starting then i'd just play him

The problem at Southampton is that Adkins hasnt a clue what he's doing. Dropping Puncheon, dropping Lambert, sending 12m!!! on Ramirez when experienced PL defenders and midfielders were the obvious need, he's way out of his depth...
So Puncheon will always be a risk and you'll never be able to rely on him. He might be worth a gamble this week alone to avoid a hit but I'd have him out straight away after that.
I have the same problem with Guthrie at the moment and beed to get rid of him for a 5th mid who always starts.
      Who are your other subs?
      Can you link your team?

I'm not a paid up member so I didn't think I could link my team on here? I do have very limited options in defence, but seeing Ben Davies in there is illustratuve of my predicament! My team for the gw is curently:

        Begovic
        Baines Rafa Cuellar (Gorkss Davies)
        Mata Bale Santi(c) Puncheon (Pienaar)
        RVP Ba Berba

Perhaps playing Gorkss (FUL at home) is a way out, but any more shows and its Davies lol

The only thing I can see worth a hit is Puncheon -> Sterling or Gorks/Davies -> Wilson.
Both Wilson and Sterling should be good in the long term and maybe worth the 4 pt gamble to get them in this week.
If you don't fancy the hit then just wing it with Puncheon/Gorks for this week.

Funny, those were the very two transfers I was considering but I don't think either offer much chance of recouping the -4 pts this gw. Reading are at home so one can live in hope.
