Another midweek of UEFA Champions League action is only a few hours away and, as usual, we have our usual run through of all the salient points leading up to first kick-off this evening…

SCOUT LEAGUE

There are still issues to be had with the game this term. The Champions League format underwent a change between seasons and the new platform that has been bestowed upon us has most definitely encountered some kinks. Aesthetically there are plus points but ergonomically we have come across problems.

After the first two Matchdays of action, however, we can be happy to say that there have been improvements in the league display which hopefully bodes well for further updates in future rounds. We can now actually view other teams which, as simple as that seems, is a major plus point.

We can now give European Fantasy managers in the Scout League their proper dues and praise Shindokung for jumping to the top of our league (and 16th overall) off the back of an incredibly strong 88 points in the previous Matchday. The expensive but rewarding strike-force of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robin Van Persie brought home plenty of bacon with 42 points between them. He even got a goal out of BATE Borisov – a charmed life.

After a couple of rounds there is a moderate split back to Wazza in second place at the hands of a strikeforce very much empowered by the best La Liga has to offer. That’s what 26.0m of your budget buys you – the best in the world. Dennil345 is a mere single place back in third with exactly the same pair of forwards doing the heavy lifting and a nice varied defence helping boost the tallies for Matchday Two.

Four other managers have been able to reach at least 150 points after two rounds of the competition with mafesan and sam777 beating it by a point with jjeva186 (our leader following Matchday One and the only of our top seven to do so without Cristiano Ronaldo lending a hand) and Chris Thompson falling right on the mark.

The Scout Team’s own, Anorak, has managed to hold firm in the upper echelons by staying exactly where he was with a berth at 32nd in the Scout League.

MARKET FORCES

With the men between the sticks, it seems that transfers being made have got one eye on saving a penny or two along the way. Manuel Neuer and Iker Casillas are first and third for transfers out respectively since the end of Matchday 2, while the markedly cheaper Helton and Wilfredo Caballero of Malaga are the leading candidates in the replacement department.

Those not looking to scrimp on goalkeepers seem to be favouring Joe Hart with two ties against Ajax up next on the calendar for City.

Marcelo has gone and broken his foot so there’s no surprise he tops the defenders on their way out with Gerard Pique not too far behind and John Terry also attracting negative equity. The FA sanctioned ban on the latter doesn’t extend to the Champions League so European Fantasy managers are either misinformed or have simply had enough with the Chelsea captain.

In tandem to that transfer we find David Luiz rocketing up the charts following his goalscoring exploits in Denmark last time round, with Thiago Silva of PSG attracting similar levels of interest. FC Porto defender Alex Sandro is the real hot property this week though with managers coming in their droves to snap him up.

Malaga have had a bright start to their Champions League careers and, to go alongside their goalkeeper, a pair of their midfielders, Isco and Eliseu, are garnering a great deal of interest as a result. Chelsea’s Oscar is drawing just as much attention which is no doubt aided by the fact he was severely underpriced at a mere 6.5 (2.5 grades cheaper than Eden Hazard, for example) in this format.

Those on budget are also shopping in the midfield ballpark as Cluj playmaker Rafael Bastos and Edgar Oleknovich of BATE have seen more than a handful of transfers in since last week.

Those midfielders dropping out are invariably coming from one of two places: Bayern Munich (Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben in particular) or the Premier League (Eden Hazard, Santi Cazorla, Nani and Antonio Valencia all seeing marked declines in interest).

European Fantasy managers may have been scrimping and saving in the previously mentioned because 13.0 heavyweight Cristiano Ronaldo is the most sought after striker this week. Robin Van Persie and Gervinho are the (much varied) alternative striking options of the week.

Interest in Bayern Munich’s pair of Marios continue to stumble up front, with the injured Gomez unsurprisingly losing investment hand over fist, while his current deputy Mandzukic also plummets after defeat to their Belarusian rivals BATE Borisov last time round. Carlos Tevez has also seen a good deal abandon ship, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic right at the front of the queue as his 12.0 stake seems to be an easy transition for those wanting Ronaldo.

ONES TO WATCH

Younes Belhanda – with just a point picked up from their first two fixtures, Montpellier will really be looking at tomorrow’s fixture at home to Olympiacos as a must-win if they want to continue in their Champions League adventure beyond the group stages. If anyone is going to invigorate the reigning French champions out of their slumber the odds will be in favour of their number 10 lynchpin Belhanda.

Jackson Martinez – with expensive options often taking up a couple of berths in European Fantasy managers’ strike-force, the need for a good value third option is often called for. Ahead of a home fixture with Dynamo Kiev Martinez is a forward who fits that mould rather nicely – he comes in at just 6.5 and plays for a side buoyed by their recent victory at home to Paris Saint Germain in the previous round.

Nicolas Lombaerts – FC Zenit have been experiencing a tumultuous beginning to a Champions League campaign that was hoped would be the start of something special. With a home tie against RSC Anderlecht coming up, Luciano Spalleti will be hoping that the tides of change will arrive if a little later than anticipated. Any success must be built on the bedrock of a solid defence so Lombaerts, just 4.5 in this format, is a nice cheap option in what should be the Russian champions’ game to win.

Lionel Messi – this pretty much goes without saying but, for the approximately quarter of European Fantasy Managers who haven’t yet welcomed Messi into their teams, we figured we’d reiterate the fact. Barcelona have the world’s best player leading their charge and a home game against Celtic tonight – it’s an equation with a very simple solution.

Please note that deadline for your UEFA Fantasy Champions League team selection will be at the earlier time of 17:45 CET today. This is due to Benfica’s trip to Spartak Moscow kicking off earlier than the seven remaining scheduled fixtures today.

I am looking to dump Mk this week and get in Martinez instead.

I don't like Juve strikers at all, I'd try and find a home for Marchisio instead. My team if I go ahead with transfers will look something like this

      Muslera, Unnerstall

Rafa, Vidal, Alex, Alex Santos/Lombaerts, Cisshoko

      Pastore, Ribery, Isco, Marchisio, Sammir

      CR7, Messi (c), Martinez

I liked that this rhymed! Yeah I know all this is pretty stupid debating anyways. Man city have got the potency and Dzeko the ability to make it at least a plausibly productive risk. If I had Tevez I wouldn't be banging on about it but I watched Sunderland's abject go at scoing a goal and thought Dzeko playing 10 minutes might be better than Fletcher.

    The stoke conundrum:

so they arguably have the best fixtures in the next 5 games, and whats more - showed decent form even in the tough fixtures. however, more of a defensive form (except against the VanRooni machine).

    so the questions are:

1 - defence - should you invest in their offense at all? crouch was great so far but can it continue? can you even spare a forward slot for him? is walters a viable alternative? or is kightly the right answer? and what about charlie adam as a super cheeky punt?
2 - offence - do you double up on stoke D? is begovich enough? would you take wilson because of price and money ball reasons or take a swing at shawx or huth for whatever offensive potential they may have?
3 - total - is one good stoke assest enough or are two essential? are three too much? what is the right balance?

I personally decided to go the begovich+walters route, but i can see many valid reasons for a wilson crouch combo, or even a begovich wilson. hard for me to justify three stoke, but surely an interesting problem.

i'm slightly nervous about their attack, the fixtures look good on paper but this is stoke, last season's worst away scorers. suddenly their 4 normally decent away fixtures coming up (nor, whm, wba, avl) don't look as appealing with this in mind. plus 2 of their next 4 home games are against sunderland and newcastle (2 pretty stern defences), i think by using the same standards for every other club to judge stoke's fixtures (from an attacking sense) may be troublesome.

Your last point is excellent. Looking at the fixtures it might seem obvious to buy attack and defence in equal measure but in reality it's Stoke and they do defending better than attacking all the time. Stoke won't be beating teams 4-0 or anything. Solid 1-0/2-0 wins perhaps. but more likely hard fought draws or shock defeats imo coming up.

Stoke seem to be offering a lot of good value players at the moment - Begovic, Wilson, Walters, Crouch. Each of them individually would be good buys and any combination of two involving at least one of Begovic/Wilson looks good to me. Three would be pushing it though.

With this in mind Begs + Wilson are worth it simply because theres nobody else keeping clean sheets at the moment, not in the 4.5m region anyway.
Crouch is definitely worth a gamble as the way Stoke play will always keep him involved in the opposition third and he's probably the first name on Tony's teamsheet.
Walters is worth it because he's on Peno's and he got all his points last yr in home games where Stoke dominate most opposition.

Kacka's a far better player. This is why I hold out hope, and will keep for now. I think Jol has to show some faith after a stunning performance for his country. I think he'll get minutes this weekend, but may not start.

Just seen the Boyce goal against Swansea. Cheeky.

Looking at his positional stats, he is so far forward for a defender. Tempted if Wigan weren't always chasing games and on the back foot.

Who would you have out of this lot to replace McAuley (have Foster already):

    Gibbs/Sagna

      The Stone Row Zs! Excellent...

I like A a great deal. It's only a matter of time before Mancini stops fannying about and picks a team. Someone pointed out there's 8 days between City's CL clash and their NEXT fixture after the Swansea game. So would Mancini rest play Aguero tomorrow - then rest him for 8 days after that? Why not play him at the weekend like a normal player. He's had loads of rest. So I reckon we'll see him starting more and more now.

Not that that's much more than a hunch

    Afternoon Pundits and City Fans,

Now that we believe that Silva is out for the weekend will Yaya or Nasri be the most forward midfielder? Thinking on taking a one week punt on one or the other. I remember Nasri from the Arsenal days and he was at moments quite brilliant but he seems to have lost a bit of his spark.

Otherwise what midfielder @ 8.2 would you recommend for this weekend?

    Thanks

If Javi Garcia & Rodwell are both out again, I'd imagine Yaya may end up sitting a little more than we would like.

I'd be tempted by Ben Arfa, if you don't already own him.

      Barry Yaya
      Nasri
      Tevez Aguero
      Dzeko

      ??

I am considering Nasri. But he does have a tendency to play the martyr and amass 100 sideways passes in the final third, just quietly keeping the attack ticking along without ever actually doing anything. Frustrating when he's in that mood. On the other hand, I still really like him as a player and even when he's playing sideways you'd fancy him to score a goal in an open fixture like City v Swansea. I really want him in this week but can't afford it.

He bleeds red that boy... literally.

I met a guy who writes for Arsenal magazine who said Nasri has the best tactical brain of any football he'd ever interviewed (other than maybe Cesc). He said him, Wenger and Cesc would talk for hours about football. They were both obsessed with thinking about the game - like Wenger.

I always think of that when I watch him play - esp. for France where he's much more important than at City. I like watching him play, pushing and pulling other players around.

Partly why I like owning him. But I also want to cut loose and hit the thing!

i truly can't envision any hypothetical situation where nasri plays behind yaya. unless it's samir's homoerotic dream where he replaces the stars of spike lee's jungle fever with himself and mr. toure

Need help. 1 FT. Do I upgrade my defense or switch out a forward? Or both for a hit?

    Bego - Foster

    Demel - Gibbs - Caulker - McAuley - Nelsen

    MIchu - Cazorla - Dempsey - Sterling - Pienaar

RVP - Tevez - Jelavic 0.8 in bank.

    Cheers!

      I could do...

      Pienaar > Mata
      Jelavic > Crouch

      ...for a hit. Thoughts?

He's been close to scoring several times in the last few games. Plays consistently in a CAM role for a good, creative team. Just a matter of time before a big game. I nearly prefer him to Bale because of this advanced role in the offense. If AVB starts Adebayor instead of Defoe, this will greatly help Dempsey. Defoe is selfish and does not look for the pass, which has hurt Dempsey's chances.
