Among Stoke’s “jolly green giants,” as Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson referred to the Staffordshire side earlier this month, Peter Crouch stands tallest. Unlike the more robust looking of Stoke’s leviathans such as Robert Huth, however, Crouch’s freakishly long, fragile looking 6 foot 7 inch body means he is too often underestimated as a footballer. This allows his deft touch and at times prolific goal scoring ability to frequently catch teams unaware.

For England, he has scored an impressive 22 goals over his 42 appearances between 2005 and 2010, whilst during his three year spell at Liverpool, which came to an end in 2008, he also scored 22 goals, including a “perfect hat-trick”, with his head, left foot and right foot, against Arsenal in 2007. The previous year Crouch’s assist for Steven Gerrard’s second goal in the FA Cup final proved another highpoint in his career.

It is not just opponents that often underestimate this 31-year-old, though; Fantasy managers are also often too quick to dismiss Crouch.  Owned by just 9.4% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and 0.8% of managers in the Sky Sports game, he has emerged as a key differential as Stoke’s fixture list significantly improves over the next eight Gameweeks (SUN, nor, QPR, wha, FUL, NEW, wba, avl).

Whilst Stoke’s opening run of games have been among the toughest in the Premier League, Crouch has already performed well, though, accruing 46 points in the FPL game, with four goals, an assist and 11 bonus points to his name. He is now ranked fifth in the FPL game among strikers in terms of total points – only Ba and Fletcher have collected more bonus points thus far.

Slowly but surely Fantasy managers are beginning to look beyond his tall frame and see the genuine footballing prospect that lies beneath. He has risen 0.2m in the FPL game over the last eight weeks, where he is now priced at an affordable 6.7m. Those setting the prices in the Sky game are perhaps less naive about Crouch’s potential and have slapped him with an 8.8 valuation but he could prove to be worth every penny if this lanky titan can continue his fine form over the kind looking schedule ahead.

The major issue surrounding Crouch as a prospect is whether there is room in our three-man FPL forward lines to find a space for the Stoke striker. With the likes of Steven Fletcher, Demba Ba, Dimitar Berbatov and Rickie Lambert all vying for our attention in the low-to-mid-price bracket, there are plenty of viable up front alternatives also to consider over the next few matches.

In addition, having recently favoured a 4-5-1 due to a punishing opening schedule, Tony Pulis is expected to return to a 4-4-2 as the fixtures ease. Jon Walters offers an alternative route if he is moved back up top – classified as a midfielder in FPL and with spot-kick duties also under his belt, the Irishman is also expected to pick up plenty new suitors and could be a better fit for some.

Is Suarez > Crouch worth a -4pt hit if it means I can do Michu > Bale/Silva next week?

I wouldn't take a hit for that. I think Suarez has a better chance of scoring this GW than Crouch vs Sunderland. If there ever was a game that could go goalless...

Sure, but why take a hit this week for a move that isn't likely to get your more points this week? You can just as easily wait one week and do it next week for free. If you stick by Michu for mci, it makes sense to keep him for CHL with sot the next game? Either way, gives you another week to assess the Michu situation, his OOP-potential and his suspension tightrope. If he gets yellow vs City he'll miss only the league cup tie.

    Good morning guys and dolls.

I'll have to make a decision about my FT tonight, probably right after the europa games, since I am away the whole weekend. I'm thinking of doing Suarez -> Defoe (c) (for two weeks, then Defoe -> Ba/Crouch/whatever).

How should I read tonights Tottenham game? If Defoe starts and gets subbed after 60 he'll start this weekend? If he doesn't play he'll start this weekend? What if they play with 2 strikers? Or should I just stop worrying and realize he's untouchable after the quotes from AVB and the way he's been playing lately? I saw the whole Chelsea - Spurs game, he played very well considering his service was so-so.

I don't like the idea of 2 week punts tbh and Defoe is still a rotation risk with Adebayor lurking imo, so no, I wouldn't bother.

Latest AVB interview does hint at Defoe being the main man, and that Ade is more likely to play when/if they roll out with two strikers.

Had him since GW 2 or 3, he is great value, consistent, and has his managers aith. Id go for him, especially as a 2 week punt. Loads of goals in store for Tot in the next 2 i think, spl with Bale back and fresh

Yeah I saw this yesterday, it's a tricky one to what to make of it tbh.

"I think Ade has done extremely well in the games where he has come in for the squad, certainly he is in contention for games where we play with two strikers."

What teams do you reckon these will be where they need to play 2 strikers? Stoke maybe?

Could be versus teams where they need more physicality, like Stoke. Could be versus easier teams where they don't need 5 midfielders, like Wigan at home. Either way, I think Defoe will start. Suarez -> Defoe (c), boom.

Very thin defense, not sure the attacking 8 make up for the lack of points you could see from your backline. Rooney could be a good choice though (and I'm saying this as an RVP owner).

Bego + 4.0 feels like a better combo than Bego + Jask for WC right now, new WC in January to change keepers.

Does anyone else think that this is a season for the casuals?

I've been playing this game seriously (I do sometimes have fun) for 2 years now, and this is the first time I can think of that seems to favour casual players...

Let me explain... every time someone scores well in a game, we get a huge influx of transfers for that player... then they score well for a few weeks and then when they return a blank or two they get shipped... the scoring patterns seem to fall perfectly for a casual player's transfer patterns...

Planning mainly for fixtures with form in mind just doesn't seem to cut it this season... maybe we should be more knee jerky and follow suit if we are to keep up...

Of course this will only be accepted by a few, since I'm not sure many are down here in the lowly ranks with me... I'm just ranting to try to justify my strategy doing so badly, I'm sure it'll pick up, it just better be soon or I'll start to get very worried...

I dunno, I've had no luck either....selling Bale vs ManU away...Selling Tevez after limited gametime and buying Lambchops after he started to clean up.........then buying Bale back the next week for Villa...buying Santi for Nor(while Selling Haz vs Spurs).

i honestly found last year to be the season of the casuals.. WC GW 1, not many good options leadin to cookie cutter sides, form beatin fixtures every time.. i hated it. This season is more like the one's of old.. where there are plenty of options in the same price ranges leadin to strategy and patience being rewarded. (never owned michu, hazard, ivanovic etc and still doin pretty ok)

Tougher fixtures may push Ramires forward at the expense of Hazard/Oscar, as per both CL away games. This is my concern. Lamps injury will mean a start for both v United but there after it is a risk.

I feel the same on this although he has not played that well in CL either. Such an advanced central role in one of the best attacking units in the Prem at £7.8m does require attention though. Big argument for spending £1.4m more on guaranteed minutes and more likely output though.

I have him and michu and pienaar and have a real conundrum this week! I'm desperately trying to find out if he is back training yet but heard nothing. He is a real threat if he's fit and not worth 2 transfers to ditch and get back if he's only out another week. Great rotation too.

Lallana has been by far the biggest disappointment in our squad this year, his general play has been awful, hes just not performed, how he is picking up fpl pts is beyond me. Picking lallana over Ramirez if both r fit would be crazy imo.

tbh the lack of clean sheets this season from all teams makes this less of a problem.

The one thing that City are reliable for is scoring after the 80th minute which is why they're subs seems to score time and time again. I might look at getting an article written up about this. Supersubs.

But it's Kolarov, we're talking about. He scores goals and assists in one match and gets dropped in the other and he is not very popular for his defending.

Eamonn Dunphy was sayin on RTE tv last night how Clichy went from being a top left back at Arsenal into a left back who "doesn't care" at city

You know City winning the league last year has created a little bit of complacency.

I'm not suggesting Kompany isn't a model professional, but sometimes without actually realising it, it's easy to take the foot off the accelerator.

Roy Keane spoke about it in his book that when United won the CL in 1999, Dwight Yorke considered this the pinnacle of his career and said he didn't care if he won nothing else. He objected to this. Keane was the type of player who celebrated for one night and then moved on looking for more success.

That's why I love Keane. Look where Sunderland is after he managed them. He is a great manager as well. He might have his own attitude problems, but he utilizes them to the fullest on the pitch where it matters.

    Morning lads

So the question I keep asking myself is. Kolarov, can i really go through with it. Having decided to hold onto Ramirez Davies can depart my team. But Kolarov is a massive risk when Wilson is out there

    Hi guys…need some serious help!

    Mannone Davis
    Rafael baines demel cuellar davies
    Pienaar barfa Morrison michu cazorla
    Lambert suarez rvp.

Have 2FT and 0.2m in the bank. My biggest worry is that i DON’T have any city/chelski/spurs players in my team plus the fact that lambert is a rotation risk now….

    So a couple of questions:
    1) What should i do with lambert...he didnt start last game but he always starts at home so shd i play him this week and take him out next week?
    2) if i take lambert out this week, which striker should i bring in? i was thinking defoe for spurs coverage/ba if i take barfa/ jelavic if i drop pienaar/tevez but rotation risk
    3) I really want some city coverage so thinking of bringing in nasri...thoughts? i can do without chelski coverage since they have bad fixtures
    4) whats the general feel around michu...bad fixtures but playing as a striker....

    ALL thoughts welcome:).

skrtel jagielka and oshea all need to be downgraded and podolski upgraded to aguer/rooney/rvp

also fellaini is a problem, do you have a wildcard still?

      Too much crouch.

Defence far too mid-range... needs some downgrades and some upgrades. Would WC if I had that team.

Messing about with my team, i can get the following for a 24 point hit(played the WC gw2) and have £0.1 in the bank, i know it is mad but so tempting

    Begovic/McCarthy
    Hughes/Simpson/Cuellar/Wilson/McCartney
    Bale/Mata/Santi Cazorla/Walters/Sterling
    Ba/Van Persie/Aguero

Don't be tempted. Way too much. Too much to claw back. I only ever consider doing 8 points max. And that's if I'm in the shite

Always calm, needed to be said. Making 7 transfers in a week is nonsensical. Everyone could do that but would never be tempted.

Any reasons for captaining Bale over Kun? In the same dilemma.

imo bale will either start or not be involved, whereas theres a chance aguero could come on for a 1-pointer

              Dont fancy him starting?

              - Mancini would want to make a big point in the league
              - No international/long travels
              - Him and Tevez starting together could run riot, plu he was incredible from the bench against the Swans last time out

All valid points but i made a number of valid points that hed start the home game against sunderland and got it totally wrong so guna go with bale as i expect both to score well anyway

    Hey folks

I have 1 FT and £4.3 in the bank.

Am thinking taking a hit to do:

    Fletcher and Davies out.
    Crouch and vert in?
Or maybe just Aguero in for fletcher?
    Will he start though.

    Foster, Begovic

    Baines, Davies, Demel, Cuellar, Gorkks

    Nolan, Cazorla, Michu, Bale, Guthrie

    Ba, RVP, Fletcher

    Thank you!!
