We draw a line under Gameweek 10 with a tip of the hat to Everton’s Belgian destroyer, the home form and team work of West Brom and raise questions over whether those who play in “the hole” are forcing a Fantasy rethink…

The Player

Marouane Fellaini notched for the first time since Gameweek 5 in Saturday’s draw at Fulham to serve a timely reminder of his mid-price capabilities. Fellaini’s double at the Cottage, supplemented with three FPL bonus points, earned him a 15 point haul for Gameweek 10 – more than any other player – and rewarded those owners who chose to hold following a recent knee problem.

Fellaini’s omission from the Gameweek 8 trip to QPR saw almost 206,000 Fantasy managers sell him on and with doubts over his availability for the Merseyside derby the following week, a further 117,000 parted company with the Belgian – only for him to recover and supply an assist. Those who sold him on have been somewhat reluctant to bring him back due to the fact that Fellaini is just a single caution away from a one-match ban but his weekend haul highlighted his importance to an Everton side that have now scored 19 goals in the opening 10 Gameweeks – more than the likes of City, Spurs and Arsenal.

His role in “the hole” for the Toffees means Fellaini is a constant menace to opposition backlines, with David Moyes’ tactics getting the best out of his aerial ability in and around the box – indeed, Fellaini has now scored five times, more than Nikica Jelavic. The Belgian’s weekend haul also put clear daylight between him and Steven Pienaar in the battle for the best value Toffees midfielder and despite that imminent one-match suspension hanging over him, Fellaini is clearly back in vogue – 90,000 Fantasy managers have already drafted him in after his weekend exploits. His FPL value is back up to 7.1 and those pondering a move to acquire his services will doubtless be feeling the pull of his rising popularity.

A home clash with Sunderland, a team that have looked more vulnerable in the air than most this term, bodes well for the formidable Fellaini and, should he deliver again and avoid his booking, we will doubtless see another significant rise in the week that follows.

The big question is whether Felliani is a season-keeper. Given his continued form and the struggles of Nikica Jelavic, it seems highly unlikely that we’ll see the Belgian dropped deeper into a traditional midfield role just yet. Indeed, Everton’s attack has been so effective with Fellaini in that role in terms of threat, Moyes seems likely to go with the tactic for the remainder of the season. If that is the case, then Fellaini would seem guaranteed to bring more havoc and return further hauls like the Craven Cottage display.

The Team

Another home game, another win for West Brom. The Baggies have now picked up 15 points in front of their own fans – more than any other side this season – and have registered just one win less at the Hawthorns than the entirety of the previous campaign. Steve Clarke has clearly made a big impression at home, with four Hawthorns clean sheets also accrued, though on their travels it’s been a different matter; his side have returned just two points and three goals over their opening four road trips – only the bottom two have fared worse.

The Baggies sit pretty in fifth right now but with four away trips in their next six (wig, CHE, sun, swa, STO, ars) are set for a testing time over the next few Gameweeks. As mentioned in Scout Notes earlier, Clarke seems to be utilising his squad to great effect; while no one player is the star of this side, plenty have chipped in with crucial contributions – 10 West Brom players have racked up 29 FPL points or more. Indeed, in each of the four classifications, the Baggies have provided us with a player who has returned 40+ FPL points already – Ben Foster, Gareth McAuley, James Morrison and Shane Long.

Bearing in mind that Morrison is the costliest of this quartet, at 6.3 in FPL, it’s a sign of the mid-price appeal of a side that seems to be benefitting from a more open style of play this time round, with Clarke allowing his charges to express themselves with a little more freedom than the previous regime.

The Talking Point

Glance at the top 10 scoring midfielders in FPL and one thing is immediately noticeable – five of the top performers play in “the hole” for their respective clubs. Which begs the question: should there be more variety of player classifications within our Fantasy games? As tactics evolve within the Premier League and the shift towards 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 becomes far more commonplace, would Fantasy games benefit from introducing an “attacking midfielder” bracket?

Fellaini, Kevin Nolan, Santi Cazorla, Michu and James Morrison are all racking up the points from more advanced berths and offer far greater goal threat than the traditional central midfielder type – Fellaini started the season at 6.5, compared to Mikel Arteta’s 8.0 in FPL, for example, despite the fact that the latter sits in front of the Arsenal back-four in a 4-2-3-1. The Belgian’s constant goal threat has seen him so far outperform Nikica Jelavic for the Toffees and while it’s great for Fantasy owners, the variety across our midfields is rapidly decreasing this term with a seemingly obvious and exclusive pool of talent to select from.

There will, of course, be the obvious exception in any given Gameweek but after 10 rounds of matches, those players in “the hole” clearly have an overall advantage. Strategies and tactics would be taken to a whole new level if Fantasy managers were restricted to a maximum of two players from this classification – maybe even take away their ability to earn an extra point for clean sheets and the game would be instantly more intriguing. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but FPL showed they were willing to revise the bonus points last year – a system that places the likes of Sandro and John Obi Mikel in the same player pool as Fellaini and Cazorla could surely be improved upon.

I don't agree with this new classifications thing at all I'm afraid... some players are inherently a better proposition than others, that's just the way it is. There will always be some players who are "under-priced", and the likes of us (i.e. the FFS Community, as opposed to the "casuals") can benefit from this by spotting them ahead of time. I'm indebted to this site, for example, for pointing me in the direction of Michu before the season started.

If you introduced new classifications they could easily be just as flawed as the current ones: would Fellaini have even been classified as an "in the hole" player, or would he have been classified as a DM? His initial pricing suggests the latter. I think giving players a different scoring system based on their nominal position at the start if the season is ludicrous: their position can change in the course of one match, let alone over a season. Besides, what if Carrick (just an example, don't get angry United fans!) had a shocker, gave away the ball twenty times and conceded free-kicks in dangerous areas but the opposition failed to score regardless. Should he get an extra point?

I agree that it would be nice for players such as Tiote or Mikel to get some credit when they put in a good shift, thus opening up the pool of players a bit, but I think that a refined bonus points system would do this better than over-complicating things. I've always thought that goals, assists and clean sheets should not be reflected in the bonus system as they're already reflected in the scoring. This is why the subjective system was good because if a DM completely bossed the midfield they could (note, I don't say would) get credit for it. Instead, how about a bonus system that just rewards tackles, blocks, chances created etc - the "unseen" contributions that players don't already get rewarded for?

Good debate though, that's wasted 10 minutes of my working time!!

I'm going to be controversial and say, if they haven't done anything else apart from score 3 goals, no they shouldn't. They've already got 12/15/18 points depending on their position.

Perhaps that's a little harsh, but I don't think they should dominate the scoring system so much. How about as an alternative, as well as the bonus system that "rewards the otherwise unrewarded" you get an extra point for a brace, and 2 extra points for a hattrick? i.e. a striker would get 4 for his first, 5 for his second and 6 for his third

No, I think the Sun game does that, 5 points for a goal, unless you score a hat-trick in which case you get 4x5 points = 20points, which I think is ridiculous.

I feel this because the whole idea of someone scoring a hat-trick is just some nominated, glorified tag that people give that player when in reality, there is no actual difference between a player scoring 3 in one game, then not scoring in the next two games, and a different player scoring a goal in each of the three games, they still are on 3 goals each over the 270 minutes.

If anything, scoring one goal in 3 different matches is probably better that 3 in one and two blanks, as you are helping your team to win more matches instead of ''over-winning'' a particular match.

I think that's a very dispassionate way of looking at it to be fair, I think most people would agree there is something very special about a hattrick.

The Sun thing sounds a bit much, but getting an extra point for a brace and 2 for a hattrick is only like getting the 3 bonus for a hattrick anyway.

No, not specifically for just scoring a hat-trick, since they already get 12 to 18 points for that depending on their classification.

If they score a hat-trick, and play well under the other attributes, then the 3BP's will be a formality, but the point about a player scoring one, two or three goals is that they already get points for this.

The fairest way i have seen bonus points awarded was in a game in Italy i played years back. They took the player ratings from 3 newspapers and the player with the highest average got the points. May not work as good here though as sports papers in Italy are way better.

      Excellent point mate.
The old bonus point system was much better in my opinion too. It was called by someone who watched the game and the most influential players got the points.
Now its worked out on a spreadsheet by some nerd who knows nothing about football and hasnt even seen the game. He just sits there and decides that a tackle is weighted this way, an acccurate pass is weighted as something else, and the same for shot on target etc etc.

Its total and utter bullshit. Who can decide how important an accurate pass is V a blocked shot V a shot on target - wow he hit the target, big bloody deal, did he score, no, so why give credit?

I remember when Arteta was at Everton, classy player, massive influence on games, used to get lots of BP's even when he didnt score or assist. Now he still plays well and gets nothing.

Under the current bonus system the guy who assists the assister could be man of the match 20 times a season and never get a bonus point - rubbish

Repost (because I just waste 5 minutes working this out)

To respond to the point that who would own defenders if DMs were classified as defenders too. Firstly you would price them around the same price as defenders, not what they are now I think thats pretty obvious. So taking some examples:

Parker scored 62 points last year and would have scored 97 points as a defender last year, BAE scored 135.

Carrick scored 97, would have scored 149, Evra scored 159.

Barry scored 83, would have scored 123, Kompany scored 145.

Mulumbu scored 98, would have scored 129, McAuley scored 110.

Arteta (who wasn’t really a DM as much last year) would have scored 171 which is massive but on a par with Verm if he’d played the whole season.

Just put them on a par with defenders of a similar nailed on-ness and acting ability.

Off the top of my head I think as defenders a fair price would be Parker 5.5, Carrick 7.0, Barry 6.5, Mulumbu 5.5, Arteta 8.0.

You'd still get buyers at that price.

We've had DMs classed as defenders before, Andre Bikey and Alex Song for example, and they've been fun players to own without by any means being 'overpowered'.

If the squad selection was more structured as people have suggested above, ie. 2GK, 2 FB, 3CB, 1DM, 2AM, 2WG, 3S etc it would ve a BAD BAD idea

I think it would limit the range of players selected by serious players, which is already quite limited this year.
As the "picking pool" for each position would be smaller, certain OOP or low value or strong performing players would dominate their position and with only 2 to pick in most categroies it would leave 5-6 players with over 65% ownership, rendering their scores virtally pointless

No I mean, if they come into your team because one of your 11 players didn't start, then they just earn half points.

e.g. this week I would have scored 11 points for Fellaini, Doosra would have scored 5. 😉

I can't make my mind up about this idea. On the one hand it does seem very unfair when you opponent gets massive points off the bench, on the other hand it sort of defeats the object of having a balanced squad. If a 2 or 3 point getting midfielder only got 1 point coming off the bench there'd be no disincentive to just getting the cheapest midfielder possible. Ferguson would have been in EVERY squad last year.

I feel with pricing that the game is about right. The fact that you only have 5 slots in midfield to fill means that there will only realistically be a small pool of players you pick in any case. The classification thing will be way too difficult to implement in practise anyway.

The difference comes in performance via educated punts and careful monitoring of form?

      His performance was excellent again.

6 chances created by Leighton Baines in the 2-2 draw with Fulham. Baines has been involved in 21% of Everton’s goals this term. To put that into perspective, Steven Piennar has been in involved in 23% – emphasising that, with Baines, you’re effectively getting a sixth midfielder with the potential for clean sheets.

LOng term it's worth it. I've done this and feel good bout it.

If he continues playing behind the striker he'll hoover up the points against anyone, and why would Moyes change it?

Just kicking myself I took him out when he got injured. Lesson learnt. Even with a one-game ban looming he's not leaving my team again until injured or moved back to midfield.
