We draw a line under Gameweek 10 with a tip of the hat to Everton’s Belgian destroyer, the home form and team work of West Brom and raise questions over whether those who play in “the hole” are forcing a Fantasy rethink…

The Player

Marouane Fellaini notched for the first time since Gameweek 5 in Saturday’s draw at Fulham to serve a timely reminder of his mid-price capabilities. Fellaini’s double at the Cottage, supplemented with three FPL bonus points, earned him a 15 point haul for Gameweek 10 – more than any other player – and rewarded those owners who chose to hold following a recent knee problem.

Fellaini’s omission from the Gameweek 8 trip to QPR saw almost 206,000 Fantasy managers sell him on and with doubts over his availability for the Merseyside derby the following week, a further 117,000 parted company with the Belgian – only for him to recover and supply an assist. Those who sold him on have been somewhat reluctant to bring him back due to the fact that Fellaini is just a single caution away from a one-match ban but his weekend haul highlighted his importance to an Everton side that have now scored 19 goals in the opening 10 Gameweeks – more than the likes of City, Spurs and Arsenal.

His role in “the hole” for the Toffees means Fellaini is a constant menace to opposition backlines, with David Moyes’ tactics getting the best out of his aerial ability in and around the box – indeed, Fellaini has now scored five times, more than Nikica Jelavic. The Belgian’s weekend haul also put clear daylight between him and Steven Pienaar in the battle for the best value Toffees midfielder and despite that imminent one-match suspension hanging over him, Fellaini is clearly back in vogue – 90,000 Fantasy managers have already drafted him in after his weekend exploits. His FPL value is back up to 7.1 and those pondering a move to acquire his services will doubtless be feeling the pull of his rising popularity.

A home clash with Sunderland, a team that have looked more vulnerable in the air than most this term, bodes well for the formidable Fellaini and, should he deliver again and avoid his booking, we will doubtless see another significant rise in the week that follows.

The big question is whether Felliani is a season-keeper. Given his continued form and the struggles of Nikica Jelavic, it seems highly unlikely that we’ll see the Belgian dropped deeper into a traditional midfield role just yet. Indeed, Everton’s attack has been so effective with Fellaini in that role in terms of threat, Moyes seems likely to go with the tactic for the remainder of the season. If that is the case, then Fellaini would seem guaranteed to bring more havoc and return further hauls like the Craven Cottage display.

The Team

Another home game, another win for West Brom. The Baggies have now picked up 15 points in front of their own fans – more than any other side this season – and have registered just one win less at the Hawthorns than the entirety of the previous campaign. Steve Clarke has clearly made a big impression at home, with four Hawthorns clean sheets also accrued, though on their travels it’s been a different matter; his side have returned just two points and three goals over their opening four road trips – only the bottom two have fared worse.

The Baggies sit pretty in fifth right now but with four away trips in their next six (wig, CHE, sun, swa, STO, ars) are set for a testing time over the next few Gameweeks. As mentioned in Scout Notes earlier, Clarke seems to be utilising his squad to great effect; while no one player is the star of this side, plenty have chipped in with crucial contributions – 10 West Brom players have racked up 29 FPL points or more. Indeed, in each of the four classifications, the Baggies have provided us with a player who has returned 40+ FPL points already – Ben Foster, Gareth McAuley, James Morrison and Shane Long.

Bearing in mind that Morrison is the costliest of this quartet, at 6.3 in FPL, it’s a sign of the mid-price appeal of a side that seems to be benefitting from a more open style of play this time round, with Clarke allowing his charges to express themselves with a little more freedom than the previous regime.

The Talking Point

Glance at the top 10 scoring midfielders in FPL and one thing is immediately noticeable – five of the top performers play in “the hole” for their respective clubs. Which begs the question: should there be more variety of player classifications within our Fantasy games? As tactics evolve within the Premier League and the shift towards 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 becomes far more commonplace, would Fantasy games benefit from introducing an “attacking midfielder” bracket?

Fellaini, Kevin Nolan, Santi Cazorla, Michu and James Morrison are all racking up the points from more advanced berths and offer far greater goal threat than the traditional central midfielder type – Fellaini started the season at 6.5, compared to Mikel Arteta’s 8.0 in FPL, for example, despite the fact that the latter sits in front of the Arsenal back-four in a 4-2-3-1. The Belgian’s constant goal threat has seen him so far outperform Nikica Jelavic for the Toffees and while it’s great for Fantasy owners, the variety across our midfields is rapidly decreasing this term with a seemingly obvious and exclusive pool of talent to select from.

There will, of course, be the obvious exception in any given Gameweek but after 10 rounds of matches, those players in “the hole” clearly have an overall advantage. Strategies and tactics would be taken to a whole new level if Fantasy managers were restricted to a maximum of two players from this classification – maybe even take away their ability to earn an extra point for clean sheets and the game would be instantly more intriguing. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but FPL showed they were willing to revise the bonus points last year – a system that places the likes of Sandro and John Obi Mikel in the same player pool as Fellaini and Cazorla could surely be improved upon.

It seems very unfair that such an anomalous week is being used for qualification. Lots of really good players getting poor scores and vice versa.

It would rule me out but I can't help feeling that it would be more fair to just base it on rank so far.

It's a shame! I'm doing well this year (near the top 2.5k) and I doubt that my 38 points will get me into the Cup. It's the first dodgy GW I've had all season as well, but the guys have to employ some kind of pre-qualifying system.

People will complain however the qualification process is carried out.

        There's always next year :p

Thought I'd post my team on here for some input, I'm sort of happy with my team.
rate me, judge me, tear me to peices..

      Foster (Jaaskelainen)
Rafael - Huth - Ivanovic - Baines (Demel)
Peinaar - Mata - S Cazorla - Ben Arfa (Sterling)
      Ba - Tevez - Crouch

Got £0.5 in the bank and 1 FT this week, but tempted to let it roll over this week (most of my players playing at home this week so might keep the faith)

My plan was to maybe downgrade HBA the following week to bring in the funds.

      REPOST

      Alright chaps

      Abbiati – Beto
      Loamberts – Demichelis – Vida – (Garay – Vidal)
Belhanda – Lucho Gonzalez – Cazorla – Matuidi – (Kroos)
      Messi – Huntelaar – Ronaldo

any injury worries here? Matuidi came off for PSG after 30 minutes in their last game so that’s worrying, so looking to ship him probably, as well as Cazorla

      suggestions? cheers chaps

mata a good shout in for probably bale as he has a couple tough fixtures coming up. also consider bale > valencia this week then next week crouch > tevez for the home match with villa.
i have bale and am thinking its time to move on for a spell, i'll have him back when he starts looking more consistent.

Most likely - with Zlatan there is always a (very small) risk that he is sent off and you end up with a negative captain score. Messi has a nice fixture anyway tomorrow if CR7 fails to deliver big.

Just having an idle look at the top of the world player, and as well as being dialled in since GW1 when he came 61st, he has had a week at 3, 5 and 1, plus 3 others in the top 100. Best thing though is checking out his transfer history and seeing that he played his wildcard in GW4, and made FIFTY SIX TRANSFERS. Clearly not doing anything else bar playing FF....but its paying off it seems...

Hey guys, I want to chop Hangeland due to his brutal fixtures, and Fulham's attacking set up.
I have 0.0 in the bank, so looking at a defender for 5.0m or less.

Despite owning Begovic, I'm tempted by Cameron and doubling up. Wilko is on 3 yellows, and a lot of my team are on suspension tightrope already so prefer Cameron.

Who should I be thinking about? Team is linked.

considering the reception AVB got following his call last week I expect Defoe to start , with Ade to join him at some point.

In response to the main article here talking about needing a separate category for attacking midfielders - surely that is governed by price? I mean Fellaini started at 6.5 and Neville at 4.5, which clearly reflects the difference in role, no? "Bargains" - ie Michu & Fellaini so far this season - are quickly spotted and the price rises to reflect greater points haul. I would find it pretty annoying if I were forced to stock up with 3 defensive mids, and it would probably just alter everyone's tactics so they bought 3 DMFs from rubbish teams for 3.8million, knowing only difference would be 1 pt for lost clean sheet, thus leaving everyone free to spend more money on the big defenders/AMFs/forwards....

I don't see how it could work or how it would improve the game, especially as [eg Fellaini] might start season classified as a DMF then get switched into attack.....

      Thoughts?

Unless this has all been done already, but I cant cope with reading through 7 pages of comments!!

          You mean ie:
give them 2 pts for a clean sheet or 6 for a goal? Or pay them for completed passes/tackles etc?

I remember my first year or so of doing this I fell for it with a player or two.... "he's cheap, and he's a good player" etc.....

No odds for ya since I don't really bet on the matches but:
            Think Schalke will beat Arsenal
            Porto to beat Dynamo
            PSG to beat Zagreb
            Zenit over Anderlecht
            Milan to beat Malaga
            City to beat Ajax
Not sure of Olymp. vs Montpelier
Real Madrid vs Dortumund will be very tight, personally I'd hope Dortmund get the win and are certainly capable of it but Real will be really going for it so it's too close to call. Will say Real due to the home "advantage" even though a lot of Dortmund fans will be there.

Wouldn´t say most nailed on but João Pereira has been playing and could bring some attacking returns.

sorry, i logged off halfway through a conversation on Sterling.

I know im in the minority but he's not really done too much to tell me he worth having in a squad of 15. I know he's good value but i'd rather have more expensive players in my midfield, and if i needed more money just pout in a 4.5 and leave him on the bench.

Having said that he'll probably smash in a hatrick against chelsea now!

I'm not sure I'd pay 5.2 for him right now - I'd rather have Maloney - but I got him for 4.5 so he is that spot for me a lot of the time.

yes 4.5 was a good price for sterling. i've had maloney since the start and feel more confident with him as my first sub each week and having him on pks certainly helps. sterling is too young and will tire as the season progresses. brendon has already said he will need to be watched carefully and rested from time to time. but he does have so much potential.

I know he's very young but if he's playing 1 game per week and rested for cup games then he should be okay. Wilshere/Owen were playing games on all fronts from a very young age.

Not great endorsements of the effects of regular games at that age 😉

That's what I mean though I think Sterling can manage 33 games over the season but Owen played 44 and 49.

Didn't catch the first part of the conversation but I think you're probably right that he isn't worth his current price. But if you got him when he was under 5.0 then he's well worth hanging on to.

He's been playing in a slightly different role in the last 2 or 3 games and is in far more goalscoringnpositions now. If he wasn't worth it before I think he is now. Saying that his price has gone up. If like me you've had him since he was 4.5 it's a no brainier to keep him.

To have such a cheap starting winger in a top 6 team is gold dust, even at 5.1m. Liverpool are bound to score more goals and Sterling will surely be involved in a few.

we'll see. But i dont consider liverpool as top 6 (all jokes aside). And with only 5 midfield spots there are plenty of better picks. All subjective though.

I like Sterling. I think there's only 2/3 viable 5th midfielders, being Maloney, Sterling and McAnuff

Tbh I think he is worth much much more than 5.2. He might not actually be a better player than any of the other ~5.0 million midfielders, but the fact that he is nailed on up front in a 4-3-3 for Liverpool and on some occations as a forward in a 4-4-2 in combination with Suarez makes him extremely valuable.

I agree Maloney is a great choice and is probably a better player, I have them both myself, but except for Michu, Oscar and Fellaini I'm not sure there are many midfielders I'd want instead of him before you start talking Mata, Valencia and Bale. I would probably have him even if he was at 7.0mill. And to clarify my point, if it was Puncheon playing in the same role (for liverpool) i'd say he was worth that too.
