It’s time once again to roll out this week’s trio of overlooked options ahead of tomorrow morning’s deadline. Two of our three protagonists once lit up the Mestalla with their silky playmaking skills, while our final selection is a little closer to home, having previously plied his trade at Molineux…

David Silva

There’s no doubt the champions have struggled for goals this season. While this time last year City were finding the net with ridiculous ease, their current total of 18 after 10 Gameweeks is already eight less than leaders United. It’s only when you analyse the stats that the importance of David Silva becomes so apparent, though; in the five games Silva has started, City have grabbed 12 goals and scored three times on three occasions, whereas without Silva in their first XI, they have scored six goals in five matches.

With Roberto Mancini absent from this afternoon’s press conference, a somewhat spiky David Platt revealed Silva, along with Joleon Lescott and Maicon, is “available for selection at this moment in time”. Barring any training ground mishap, then, the stage looks set for Silva to return to first-team duties against Spurs this Sunday, having missed the last three with a hamstring injury.

Bearing in mind he produced six goals, 17 assists, 21 bonus points and a total of 184 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, Silva’s current tally of two assists and 18 points sum up a dramatic lack of impact. Now down to 9.3 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) from a starting price of 10.0 (and 9.0 in the Sky Sports game), Silva holds a mere 4.4% FPL ownership and with clashes against four of the top six in the next six Gameweeks, his return will be vital as Mancini’s side look to replicate the swashbuckling style of play that pipped United to the title last time round.

Pablo Hernandez

The former Valencia man had a somewhat inauspicious start to life at the Liberty Stadium. Hauled off on 45 minutes and 62 minutes respectively in his first two starts, Hernandez was also handed a couple of sub appearances in his first four matches under Michael Laudrup, as Swansea’s sensational start to the season quickly became a distant memory.

Having finally nailed down a regular role on the right of the Swans’ front three at the expense of Nathan Dyer, Hernandez has stepped up in performance as Laudrup’s raft of foreign imports begin to gel as a team. The Spaniard has now notched in two of his last three league fixtures, providing crucial strikes in a 2-1 win over Wigan in addition to a late equaliser against Chelsea. Such displays have helped him to 20 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points since the end of Gameweek 7 – not only does this leave Wayne Routledge’s tally of six points over the equivalent fixtures trailing in his wake on the opposite flank, it also exceeds Michu’s 12, despite the latter moving to the lone forward role.

Despite his undoubted talents, Hernandez was never a prolific scorer in his native country – he managed five goals and six assists on two of his four seasons at the Mestalla – but, under Laudrup’s guidance, he is evolving into a pivotal player at the Liberty. Priced at 6.1 in FPL and 6.5 in the Sky Sports game, he looks an intriguing mid-price midfield option for those seeking an alternative to the far more popular Michu. With an ownership of under 1% in both our featured Fantasy games, Hernandez travels to St Mary’s tomorrow, with a showdown against the weakest defence the top-flight has to offer the perfect opportunity to keep his recent momentum flowing.

Michael Kightly

His summer arrival from Wolves was afforded little fanfare but the wide man has quickly become an integral part of Tony Pulis’ preferred first XI. Starting all 10 of Stoke’s fixtures so far, Kightly has ousted former Fantasy favourite Matthew Etherington onto the Potters’ periphery and has offered us a steady, if somewhat unspectacular, source of points.

While the 5.5 priced midfielder’s FPL total of 39 points may not instantly grab our attentions, it compares highly against similarly priced options – indeed, only Wayne Routledge has scored more points in the sub 6.0 bracket of any midfielder or forward. Kightly’s tally has also equalled that of team mate Jon Walters, though the latter’s 6.4 valuation is far less budget-friendly.

With a couple of goals and five FPL bonus points already to his name, Kightly’s haul has also been boosted by six clean sheet points, with Pulis hauling him off towards the end just before Stoke’s opponents have scored on a couple of occasions. Priced at 4.5 in the Sky Sports game, his bizarre classification as a defender also helps his appeal, given the Potters’ resilience at the back. With a strong run of fixtures to follow, starting with tomorrow’s game at home to QPR, Kightly’s 3% FPL ownership makes him a solid differential candidate for our five-man midfields over the next few Gameweeks.

    Bego, Vorm
    Baines, Gorkss, McAuley, Hangeland, Clyne
    Yaya, Pienaar, Cazorla, HBA, Sterling
    Tevez, Crouch, Ba

I was thinking Crouch, HBA and Yaya to RVP, Michu and a mid for 4.5 or less (for -4) who would remain on the bench most of the time.
Any objections? Also, who should I have as the 4.5 mid? (was thinking Mikel or Leigertwood)

I took the .4 profit then, thinking he has peaked...

Amazingly his value has actually risen .1 in the last two weeks, when I thought his value would surely fall (given the fixtures).

I wouldnt say its overkill, if they score even 2 goals its 90% likely they'll at least be involved in one each.
And if they are ever gonna average 2 goals a game its the next 5 fixtures.

And at the end of the day they'll definitely score more goals than Sunderland

    I've come over all tingly!!

Having captained RVP in 3 of the last 4 GW's (gave the armband to Bale away at Southampton for his 10pt haul in the other week (Van Persie went on to score 12pts away to Chelsea...)), I'm almost certainly backing Baines as my captain this week.

On the face of it, this is madness. A punt that smacks of unnecessary risk taking. However, I feel strangely lucid in both thought and mind. 7 green arrows out of 9 and my first foray into the top 100k does not suggest panic captaining. Perhaps subconsciously there are FPL calculations at work that I'm barely aware of.. all contributing to that vague quantity we know as a "gut feel". I'm surprisingly relaxed about it all. So, what factors could i possibly be considering?

    1. Sunderland are the least potent attacking team in the league.
Would be a consideration for playing an Everton defender, or even transferring one in, but a 6pt captain isn't a big enough draw.

    2. No other player in the Premier League has created as many goal scoring chances.
This helps. A lot. Baines creates on average a goal scoring opportunity every 21 minutes or so. That's at least 4 chances a match to score an additional 3 points. Oh, and Fellaini is on fire in front of goal with the most attempts of any midfield player, and the most with his head.

    3. Penalty kick taker for Everton.
    Home game. 'Nuff said.

    4. Van Persie away from home.
On the face of it, this doesn't seem a creditable reason. Van Persie scores when he wants. However, United played away in Europe midweek, Van Persie played minutes (indeed, he scored), and he'll be playing his (and United's) third match in a week. Villa are no mugs, they showed green shoots of recovery last week in the 1-0 away win to Sunderland (who are Everton playing?), and McLeish is no mug in setting out a defensive minded team.

Look, this could backfire spectacularly. There's no getting away from that. But, if you have both players the risk is less than you may initially think. Assuming Baines(c) scores just the 2pts, and Van Persie plays the 90, scores and is awarded 2 bonus points... you'd score 12 points collectively. If you had RVP(c), you'd score 18 points. Sure, I'd prefer 6 more points but it doesn't set you back too far. (Of course, the reverse is true and may be considered less risky, but where's the flair in that? :-).)

P.S. For all you, "never captain, never bench" aficionados... just shut up! 😉

Nice analysis. I have been struggling with this all night. I resolved the question by the rule you don't want to hear about, but your case is strong. I think I will still stick with RVP because everyone else will, so the downside of an RVP fail is less than the downside of a Baines fail.

He's shown to be pretty poor at finishing this year so far and he'll get assists but I'm not sure it's worth it as you say...as even if he gets assists he's unlikely to be getting BPs...I feel like having RVP/Rooney would be enough. And there's always the chance he gets rotated.

I was thinking that because in away games this year, Nolan hasn't managed more than 4 points

    Cole > Baines for a 4pt hit?

His replacements are Demel and Hughes.

Everton fixtures get tougher after next 3 weeks, not sure it's time to join his party by 4p hit. Sagna?

Hmm good point. Might just wing it and play Demel.

If Baines is a season keeper then yeah i reckon worth the hit. Especially if you have plans for other transfers next week as it also buys next weeks freebie (comapred to waiting a week and geting Baines for free)

I can't decide between Gaston Ramirez & Lallana. Anybody have any strong opinions on either?

The stats say Ramirez. I think Ramirez is more of a differential. I'm keeping my eye on both

Anyone think Mancini is dumb enough to play Maicon this weekend? I definitely think it's a possibility.

not any chance when Bale is on the left flank. Do you still remember how Bale destroyed Maicon at Inter Milan at San Siro?
