Let down by Gareth Bale’s strange affliction at the Lane, James Morrison’s injury and a string of Adel Taarabt near misses last weekend, Paddy are back to test our resolve with another round of markets based on our Scout Pick selections…

We start with another player seemingly cursed by an inability to score points in home matches – Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla. A firm favourite around these parts, the Spaniard has so far scored all his goals on the road and mustered just a single assist in four Emirates clashes. Despite stuttering form, the Gunners are well fancied at home to free-scoring Fulham and, while a clean sheet looks shaky here, we like the cut of Paddy’s jib as they dangle odds of 6/1 on a goal for Cazorla with an Arsenal shut-out against Jol’s men. We’ll take that for our first three quid.

Next up is another midfielder currently in bloom. Everton’s Marouane Fellaini is having a huge impact on the Premier League this term, as David Moyes’ side enjoy a barnstorming campaign that has bristled with goal threat. They look firm favourites to knock over a shot-shy Sunderland at Goodison and, with a home clean sheet looking likely, Paddy’s odds of 4/1 on a Fellaini goal with a Toffees shut-out looks very appealing. This gets the bulk of our tenner this week, as we throw £4 Paddy’s way.

Demba Ba looks to be fit to lead the Newcastle attack against one of his former clubs this weekend. The Senegalese striker appears to have shaken off the shin problem that saw him forced off on 48 minutes at Anfield and will surely pose the biggest threat to the Hammers on Sam Allardyces’ return to the North East. Paddy are backing Ba here, offering 9/2 on another Ba strike and Newcastle clean sheet. We’ll keep some money back and give them £2 on this.

That leaves just a solitary shekel to put down on our weekly treble. This time is Carlos Tevez in the goalscorer market, with Paddy also featuring Juan Mata and the Everton backline. We can get 12/1 on a Tevez goal in the big game against Spurs, a Mata assist in Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool and an Everton cleanie against the Black Cats. That’s our tenner spent for another seven days. Good luck with your fluttering.

Register and Bet £10 And Get £20 Free

If you’re new to Paddy Power, then you can take up any of these odds and get yourself a bonus. You can sign up via this site and get a free £20 when you register an account and bet a tenner.

Finally of course, we should state that all these offers are only available to those aged 18 and over and are subject to Paddy Power’s terms and conditions. Also, if you’re going to bet, always gamble responsibly.

    Lost on last post...

What are people's thoughts on Silva? Can get Silva in for Piennar as a bit of differential. I don't want to do it thou due to Piennar's home game? Although it would be nice to have the differential.

    Team is:
    Begovic
    Rafael, Baines, Kolarov
    Nolan, Cazorla, Hazard, Piennar(Silva)
    RVP, Lambert, Pogrbynek

Subs: Jussi, Taarabt, G Cameron, Clyne

Same with Lambert transferring out. Just kinda thought. Give them one last chance. Pog is potentially a chance not to start though. Where as Berba and Odem are nailed on right?

Referring to the debate in the Scoutcast about players ‘in the hole’. I’m a big believer in ‘optimising towards goals’ not just for the points themselves but because the bps are heavily biased towards rewarding goalscorers.

However, I do still think you need to look a bit broader when it comes to MFs – Nolan, Michu and Fellaini will have odd weeks when they score goals and reap the big rewards. But you’re basically relying on goals in order to score points from them as they offer little else creatively. (We’ll call these Type A)

I think there’s two types of player in the hole, the type described above, and the Cazorla, Mata, Morrison type who play in that position, offer some goal threat but also have set pieces and more assist potential due to their greater mobility and creativity. (We’ll call these Type B)

If I needed to score big to make up points, I’d go for Type A. If I wanted consistent returns over a season, I’d look at Type B. Given where we are in the season, I’m looking to build a MF of the Bs right now.

I think the emergence of this type of quasi-second striker is one of the key elements of this year’s game so I’d be interested to hear anybody’s else’s thoughts on it.

NB: Michu is a bit of an exception now as he is literally playing up front – though he did score his goals while in the hole…

Good post. The other thing that seems notable about type A vs type B is that many of the prominent type A midfielders play for non-"elite" teams. They thus (to my mind) seem less fixture-proof than the likes of Bale, Mata, Silva (when fit), etc. It'd be interesting to see if this is true.

Thats the problem with Mancini and having 4 well paid international strikers in his squad...i think once they get knocked out of europe it will become worse because atleast then you could predict that the one who played midweek (or got subbed early) would probably be benched on the weekend...its a tough call tbh. Good luck

Too much in defence and not enough balance in MF for me, hence the reason why you're playing 4 defenders and 3 mids.

Personally, I'd be looking to downgrade Sagna for a £4-4.5m def and upgrade one of your cheapie mids.

Can't see Arsenal shutting out Fulham so I'd be inclined to play Sterling in the odd chance he actually gets an assist or an extra cs point if it ends 0-0 (which is more likely to me than Arsenal shutting out freescoring Fulham)

    Any thoughts on my team?:

    Federici, (Foster),
    Baines, Clyne, McAuley, (Demel, Cuellar),
    Santi(V), Valencia, Michu, Pienaar, (Guthrie),
    RVP(C), Tevez, Berba. (£0.6m, 1 free)

    A) Pienaar -> Fellaini
    B) Clyne -> Cameron
    C) Santi -> Mata
    D) Something else.

Any opinions are most welcome. 🙂

There's one thing though. If I sell McAuley instead of Clyne, I get some cash to get Sterling for Guthrie next week. So should I sell McAuley instead?

Seems reasonable. WBA have only one truly nice defensive fixture (STO) in the next 6.

I'm not massively on board the Sterling wagon. Tidy player but I don't see him doing much in FPL terms other than the odd assist.

I'd be inclined to pay a bit extra if you can for someone like Gaston Ramirez who is essentially playing as a striker for a Southampton side who are scoring goals (just conceding more than they score).

Liverpool aren't notorious goalscorers and its usually Suarez or Gerrard involved in their goals.

Hmm, I guess you're right. But I have Guthrie who is injured so I have to get a fifth midfielder and I don't have the cash for Ramirez so I'll have to settle for one of Sterling/McAnuff.

      B definitely.

I'd hold onto Pienaar until after Fellaini picks up his next yellow and serves his suspension.

Santi has decent fixtures coming up so may be worth holding him a bit longer too.

Hopefully one of your keepers will play this week as Foster is injured and Fed was displaced by McCarthy who is definitely out this weekend.

Hmm, I'm scared at not having Ba. And to a lesser extent Mich and Fellaini.

Is this bunch gonna perform reasonably this week, d'ya think?

    Begovic
    Baines Rafa Saylor
    Bale Mata (vc) Pienaar Maloney
    RVP (c) Aguero Lambert

Sunderland can keep it tight, so Cuellar is tempting, but possibly Demel is wiser. None of them seem a great bet for a clean sheet, as I'm sure you already know!

2FTs, no extra cash handy, not sure if any change needs to be made to the following side for this week

    Begovic
    Shawcross Santon Ridgewell
    Cazorla Pienaar Bale Michu
    Ba RVP Tevez

    Schwarzer Nelsen Cuellar Marveaux

Obviously, Marveaux the glaring issue.. Thoughts on how to improve would be appreciated

Used my FT for Defoe>Ba. But i have defensive issues to consider too. I have Wisdom, Williamson, JENKINSON, Hughes and Cuellar. Do you think i should take a hit and get rid of Jenks (value dropped to 4.9m now)? If yes, who should I bring in? Have 0.3m in the bank.

About to confirm Tevez--> Jelavic. Before anyone says anything, here's why:

Jelavic next 4 are: SUN rea NOR ARS

Tevez next 4 are: TOT AVL che wig

I WILL BE STRAIGHT SWAPPING ONE OF THESE 2 FOR SUAREZ COME GW15

I dont care what anyone says about nailed-on-ness, but there is ALWAYS a chance at rotation with City. Whether its getting subbed at 70mins, not starting and playing a 30min cameo, etc.

I fancy Jelavic to outscore Tevez over the period of 4 games.

    Before i confirm, any objections?

Jelavic hasn't scored in a few, its probably better to own an Everton mid + Baines. Also the stats say that Fellaini seems to be taking more shots than Jelavic. The only bonus I suppose is that he's a nice differential.
