A Gameweek that brought goals aplenty was lead by the resurgence of City’s tenacious frontman. He overshadowed another esteemed South American, with Merseyside’s supporting cast begin to catch the eye. As for United, they spluttered without success, with Fantasy managers finding little comfort and age-old arguments opened up once more…

The Player

In a Gameweek that saw City reinstate themselves on top of the Premier League, Carlos Tevez returned his biggest points haul of the season to re-announce himself as a heavy-hitting Fantasy asset.

While nobody was writing off Tevez, one goal in eight consecutive league appearances had seen our focus shift to other, glittering distractions, notably Luis Suarez.

In the week before the 5-0 drubbing of Villa, Tevez had been party to negative transfers for the second consecutive Gameweek, with a deficit of almost 80,000 trades over Gameweeks 10 and 11. There’s little doubt that the majority of those managers switched allegiance to Suarez, a player who had comfortably outscored Tevez over the previous four Gameweeks as he developed a new level of consistency to turn heads.

Regular points scoring was not an issue for Tevez but goals and double-figure returns had escaped him, only for the Argentine to play a pivotal role in putting Villa to the sword.

While a tap-in and penalty kick were amongst the easiest strikes that Tevez will notch this season, the confidence they will bring is surely the factor that will warm the hearts of those who have kept faith with the City man. His contribution of two assists typified a season that has seen Tevez remain at the forefront of City’s attacking play, despite their apparent troubles converting chances and killing off teams. Notably, Tevez has contributed to 50% or City’s goals when on the pitch.

David Silva’s return to midfield will be cited as the catalyst for the five-goal blitz and, ironically, while the orchestrations of the Spaniard will surely benefit Tevez’s output from this point on, Silva also opens the way for more managers to consider shedding the Argentine. Silva now offers the obvious alternative route for City attacking coverage and possibly a more secure one, given that rotation up front will surely bite over the busy Christmas programme.

That said, it’s very difficult to consider doing anything but nurturing the Fantasy worth of Tevez following Saturday’s showing. He proved his class and importance to the City cause and with Robin Van Persie stuttering to a blank at Carrow Road, provided a significant swing across the mini-leagues for those who backed him with the armband.

The Team

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool moved to seven league games unbeaten, flexing their muscles with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wigan. While Luis Suarez remains the dominant force and single most coveted Fantasy asset amongst the current Anfield crop, there was little doubt that Saturday’s outcome gave Fantasy managers further food for thought.

The decision to deploy Jose Enrique in an advanced role on the left, with Nuri Sahin benched, drew immediate dividends with the Spaniard fetching goal and assist returns, to accompany Liverpool’s third clean sheet of the season. Named in our “Differentials” going into the weekend, we could not have anticipated such an explosion from Enrique and there’s little doubt that, if he can remain deployed in such a role, he could offer outstanding value for his current Fantasy price tag (5.7 in the FPL, 6.9 in the Sky Sports game).

A knock-on effect of Enrique’s role in front of Glenn Johnson on the left is that it cements the start for Andre Wisdom at right-back. Outstanding this season, the 19-year-old has earned his place in Rodgers’ side, although Fantasy managers have been understandably hesitant to risk acquisition, even with a modest price on offer (4.5 in the FPL, 3.7 in Sky Sports). Wisdom has now started seven consecutive league matches under Rodgers and the fact that the Liverpool boss attempted to find a new role for Enrique would seem to indicate that he is doing his utmost to preserve Wisdom in his lineup.

The value offered by Wisdom in the Liverpool defence from this point on is mirrored by Raheem Sterling in attacking areas. His third place ranking in last week’s Watchlist update raised eyebrows and yet he justified this by delivering his second double-figure points haul of the season. Sterling continues to grow before our eyes as a player and Fantasy asset and, for those who have yet to succumb to the temptation of Suarez, he offers cover of the current Liverpool revolution for a mere 5.4 outlay in the FPL. It’s hard to argue against value like that whilst confidence is flowing through the Anfield gates.

The Talking Point

It was perhaps inevitable that with both Tevez and Suarez delivering double figure returns and even the likes of Santi Cazorla, Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale finding the net, that Van Persie would suffer a blank.

The Dutchman had opportunities to maintain a run that had seen him return either a goal or an assist on every league start thus far but a combination of Norwich resilience and the run of the ball, conspired to keep Van Persie at bay.

While that will have hugely frustrated his Fantasy owners, the majority of which will have surely placed the armband with their expensive striking asset, it showed a chink of light to the remaining Fantasy managers who go on scheming without him.

The argument for and against Van Persie will rage, with the Fantasy Premier League sitting back and admiring what appears to be an almost perfect balancing act with his price tag.

The fact that only four of the top 10 FPL managers currently have Van Persie in their lineup will offer comfort to those who have so far resisted, but that stat perhaps has more to do with the events of Gameweek 12 than the long-term strategy of the leading managers.

With Van Persie rested from Champions League duty and home fixtures against QPR and West Ham in the next seven days, the outlook of those clinging to the United man looks set to improve. Gameweek 12 was a thrill ride for those sans Van Persie but there are clearly plenty of scary moments to come.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think if there was a Man Utd attacking mid for 7.0-7.5 I'd be tempted. Wasn't Valencia quite cheap last year?

8.0-9.0 is a troubling area when there are other big mids with penchants for assists/goals and you get cover of other teams rather than having a bloated amount of money spent on RVP and a Man Utd winger.

Young has been shocking too though. He loves an injury as well. I wish Fergie would trial Kagawa out there on the left when he's back but that isn't happening anytime soon. My prediction is Nani will get a chance there very shortly.

One last thing I'll say on the Baines debate.

If you think Baines will be the top scoring defender over the season that is all well and good. And I'm not inclined to argue he won't be (or at least top 5).

But, predicting Baines as the top scoring defender (and Baines has already got enough points to sail along in the top 10 for quite a while without being caught) is not necessarily to say he is therefore a must have.

If you think about it this way...

If you, by selling Baines... can afford to have two low to mid-priced defenders (4.0-5.5/6.0) you can also benefit by playing your defence in cycles...(i.e rotating them)

Who is to say that by rotating your well-budgeted defence in different varieties it won't easily come close to accumulating enough points to keep up the pace overall with the other plan of always playing Baines?

The other thing is that by not owning Baines and spreading the wealth...you aren't necessarily always playing a chosen 'alternative to Baines' all the time. You can freely transfer in defenders in cycles to allow for positive form and fixtures. Whereas with Baines you have to accept his tough fixtures and play him regardless because 'he is on penalties/he crosses a lot' etc.

This isn't the last thing you'll say in this one man debate on Baines though, is it? Yes, be honest.

The problem is one of prediction. Retrospective analysis is otherwise known as hindsight. If someone had a magic method of predicting cheap clean sheets, great. Rotation also misses loads of unexpected away clean sheets and I remember doing a preseason analysis showing it wasn't outscoring playing many slightly pricier defenders all the time.

We have a lot more information now about how teams are playing and what budget players look the strongest.

I think you'll find by looking at the responses to some of my Baines posts this certainly isn't a one-man debate. I will continue to have a one-man debate with myself though on the alternative strategies to use going forward. As will you. We all like to post our own internal debates...mine is just slightly more controversial in nature at the moment, I guess.

There is a trend going back years that suggests that budget clean sheets get fewer and further between the longer the season wears on and 'premium' defences get better over the same period. In other words what you've learnt about the cheap defenders so far will not be as useful as you'd think going forward.

Budget defenders have a shorter life-span in your team though. This is the difference. Not having to play the same defender every week can be beneficial and maximise CS returns over certain periods.

This relies on you correctly predicting which budget defenders are about to become worth getting though - more power to you if you can manage it but the analysis Isacki is referring to above showed that even good, reliable rotations were actually no better and in many cases worse than just sticking with the premium option.

This also flies in the face of your "what budget players look the strongest" argument - if their lifespan is short the information gained is not useful.

You can always bring Fellaini back in, it's not permanent or anything, just with Walcott's fixtures and emerging form, it could be an idea to catch him during a decent period. I think Wenger will start him a lot more often than not. Cazorla is a great player, but I think Walcott is more explosive when on form.

Arsenal coverage would be nice but personally i'd be more concerned about bringing in some City coverage. You could however have both:

      Mata, Silva, Fellani, Sterling, Cazorla
      RVP, Suarez

CHE, CITY, EVE, LIV, ARS, UTD, LIV- quality coverage there mate!

The obvious exclusion is Berba but having Silva just at the right time (even with upcoming fixtures, remember Utd 1-6 City last season) more than makes up for it and you get to have Cazorla, Michu making the way.

I feel this is very strong and will be looking to go forward with the same myself!

Pretty happy so far this season just breaking the sub 10,000 rank thats without out (RVP) !!

Am contemplating getting him IN with Tevez OUT is this madness ??

Any other suggestions have already done Cashley >> Shorey and still have 1 free transfer & £5m left

It would pain me to get RVP the same as when I got Tevez in but the rewards soon SHOULD be great especially as (c) against QPR .....

Certainly nothing crazy about getting RVP in with his upcoming fixtures, PDM. Obviously that's going to come at a price, and that price is a hefty price tag + a valuable striker spot.

Personally I'd be tempted to upgrade Defoe or Crouchie rather than switching out Tevez, but it would depend who you could get instead.

I'd want RVP for the next allotment of gameweeks if I were you.

Leaving RVP out until now and then getting him in for these juicy fixtures could be playing a perfect game IMO.

IDEAL SITUATION: All those non-RVP owners in the top echelons of the game will continue thinking they don't need the Dutch master whereas you will have brought him in at the right time and will coast to a great finish.

Is silva now best city coverage my reasoning

With christmas looming and lots of fixtures

    City strikes will be rotated

But theres only 1 silva and their form has improved since he came back.

So the only risk is perhaps him being subbed at 75 to 80 misn every now and then.

          Arguably Nasri/Milner.

I understand what you are getting at though. Aguero and Tevez will play most games but they will miss out on a few thanks to options like Balotelli and Dzeko on the bench.

The option of playing Nasri & Milner and leaving Silva out is much less appealing for Mancini and therefore will likely not happen too often or at all.

I like owning Silva as it's just Flair. Otherwise I'd have Tevez.

Is there something wrong with me for thinking of having this defence?
    Foster Bego
Cameron Shawx Ridgewell Bjones Rafael (Already have him at 5.5)

Play Rafael every week and then just do WBA STO rotation. They rotate so well why only rotate 1 pair of players? Both have the best home defences in the prem. (WBA -let in 5 in 7 games only matched by City, Stoke let in 1 in 5 games.) And could play the home team virtually every week:
(FUL, NEW, STO, avl, WHM, NOR, LIV/qpr, SOU, FUL, CHE/read, AVL, WIG,-plan my jan wildcard after this week.)
But it could work even up to the end of the season: Just a few I don't like:
TOT(!), REA, SUN, WHU, SWA, WBA, whu(!), AVL, MUN(!), NEW, NOR, WIG, TOT/nor, MUN/sou(!)

Currently I have Cameron Cuellar Baines Rafael Simpson. GW15 I will do Baines-Shawx, Simpson-Bjones, Morrison-Silva with Baines funds. GW17 Cuellar-Olsson/Ridgewell.

I know it puts a lot of eggs in 2 baskets. But I think Stoke are very reliable to be strong defensively and WBA too at home. They are not just going through a defensive patch like maybe Norwich.

So after a horrible GW and becoming a ridicule in my ML, I am beginning to think I might use my WC around GW 15. Just brought in Silva, Cuellar, Lamb (sounds knee-jerky i know but I had planned to do these transfers for this GW even b4 they did well 🙂

    Current team is
    Bego/Foster
    Cuellar/Ridgewell/Cameron/Baines/Rafael
    Mata/Silva/Caz/Puncheon/Kaca
    RVP/Berb/Lambert

My potential WC team is (I havent played with the numbers to see if I can afford all of them)
GK - Bego/4.5 (Ruddy/Guzan - will play Bego most weeks irrespective H/A rotation unless its a very bad fixture)

DEF- Rafael/Baines/Cameron/Cuellar/Enrique (also considering Norwich/West ham defender)

    MID - Caz/Silva/Mata/Hernandez and one of Nolan/Sterling/Morrison

    RVP/Tevez/Suarez (Berbatov/Ba also potentials)

Was thinking of saving my WC for a juicy DGW but it seems I have to use it sooner to try and make up lost ground. Any tips greatly welcomed! Thanks!

DEF: Otamendi - Vidal - Alex - Kucher - Demichelis

MID: Oscar - Pirlo - Alex Teixiera - Holtby - Lucho Gonzalez

    FWD: Messi (C) - Ronaldo - Ibra

Have been doing fairly decent so far with a rank of around 2000 but I took a bunch of hits regardless. Been taking it pretty causal so far and its worked out! Imagine if FPL had a 2 point hit rule lol
