Chelsea have this evening confirmed the appointment of Rafa Benitez as “interim first-team manager until the end of the season.”

The move follows today’s shock announcement that the club had parted company with Roberto Di Matteo following last night’s 3-0 defeat in Turin.

Benitez was immediately in the frame for the role and it comes as no surprise that he has taken up the position, although the speed of the appointment is perhaps unexpected.

For Fantasy managers this could be a double-edged sword. Benitez is known to favour a 4-2-3-1 system and in that respect very little may change in Chelsea’s make-up in terms of their starting XI. The role played by Juan Mata will immediately be of interest, while Fernando Torres will be expected to remain a key figure under Benitez having worked with him at Liverpool, of course.

While all that could be welcomed, the potential return of “Rafatation” will not. Benitez is renowned for rotating his squad to keep players fresh and, in this respect, we have to hope that he fails in rescuing Chelsea’s fading hopes of Champions League progress in the final round of matches.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Why does Gomez have 2 assists when Bayern only scored 1 goal yesterday?

I am fan since 1995. First games I remember when the golden generation of Duthc players Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard. The best players I knew than. Than Gullit went there to be player and after manager. Than Zola came, Di Matteo, Vially. They were called United States from Stamford Bridge they had 11 players from different country in the first 11. Mario Stanic played for them, Kezman all players I have been fan of. I never wanted to be fan for some one like Utd, Liv, Real M or Barcelona. It is so easy to be fan for someone who is at his best. The Roman thing came after. It was pure luck, nothing connected with my passion for Chelsea.

Its a long story actually, but in some matter I grow up with Chelsea. I've learnt the passion with them.

Was a joke, but disagree with you on there. That is no excuse for not making the CL knockouts. Most of their players have already played in CL before joining City anyway and even if they are new, they have a strong squad. Remember how good Spurs was in their CL campaign. Knocking out Milan and shit.

then just keep him. Can't see much rotation until January when FA Cup starts, Aguero and Tevez will be first choice.

I'm just debating if Aguero is worth owning for GW14, reckon he could be benched for that one.

I'd rather Aguero and Sterling than Silva and Suarez, so much cheaper

but I think the same could be said of Silva and Aguero. Silva will score the occasional double digit haul but Aguero will get plenty. I can see Aguero hitting 20 PL goals again this season.

from UEFA's matchcenter - "Götze (Dortmund) scores! Mats Hummels catches Ajax sleeping with a quickly taken free-kick. He finds Mario Götze in the left channel, Götze cuts inside and hits a shot inside the near post, beating Kenneth Vermeer low to his right."

I don't think I've ever known a club where the owner has turned the entire fan base against them in less than twelve hours. 😯

Might this upheaval at Chelsea and elimination of City from CL actually make having players from either that much more attractive for this weekends clash?
